Firminator – RT Unit

The Firminator G3 is still the industry’s most versatile piece of food plot equipment, allowing plotters to do every step of the process – working the soil, adding seed and soil supplements, and compacting – from start to finish with a single implement. The Firminator RT provides another option for circumstances where tilling may be preferable to discing.

The Firminator RT retains the great features and versatility of Ranew’s full-size, 3-point implement but replaces the disc assembly with a heavy-duty PTO rototiller when conditions call for a different soil buster.

One example of the versatility of the Firminator RT is when top-seeding cutting deeply into the soil is optional. Just scratch the surface, spread the seed, and roll it with the culti-packer, all in a single pass. This will allow hardier plants like clover in the plot to persist while new plants sprout and grow. This method also helps to conserve soil moisture during dry conditions.

Tilling may also be preferable when there’s a thick surface layer of thatch and weeds, but only a shallow cut is required. The tiller tines will better break up small clumps of unwanted top-growth plants, reducing the chances of regeneration and providing more surface area for herbicide application.

Perhaps a plot is disced and planted in the spring and is now ready for a late summer planting. Load the hopper with seed, then till over the top with the Firminator RT, and the job is done. The tiller may also be a better option when soils are dry on the surface but too moist to disc below.

TEACH A KID TO FISH…

WITH A FEW GOOD POINTERS, SHARING THE ART OF FLY FISHING CAN BE EASY

You may be tired of fishing alone or want to share a favorite pastime with your loved ones. After all, someone probably taught you, and if you are reading this, you survived to tell the tale. While it may seem daunting at first, teaching kids or family members how to fly fish can be immensely rewarding—and not difficult with the right tips. Here are a few pointers for getting your budding pupil out on the water with a bent rod, a tight line, and many fish opportunities.

GONE FISHING:

Despite what many online retailers may lead you to believe, you don’t need to take out a second mortgage to purchase a good fly fishing setup. An entry-level rod and reel are more than enough for a novice to use for years, and it is best to avoid sinking too much into the purchase (pun intended) in case they lose interest.

In the same vein, you also want to make sure to pick a versatile rod for a range of fishing conditions in your area. Generally, a 9-foot 5/6-weight rod is suitable for most freshwater fishing, from alpine lakes to large rivers. If you are fishing the ocean, you may opt for a heavier rod, like a 9-foot-8-weight rod. Wild Water Fly Fishing carries an array of excellent entry-level rods.

It is also worth buying a few more leaders and flies than usual. Tangles and snags are more likely to occur for a beginner, and you may quickly need more supplies.

This Week on HSCF’s “Hunting Matters” Radio & Podcast:Edward J. Hudson of Wild Strongholds

Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) and “Hunting Matters” welcomes Edward J. Hudson has traveled the world since childhood and recently decided to combine his love of nature, hunting, and international travel. During his childhood, Ed remembers stories of how there used to be more deer, more sheep, and more game. He grew tired of these stories and became an avid wildlife conservationist because of stories from the past like these. Since 2017, Ed has hunted the rainforest and savanna of Cameroon, the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, the Hindu-Kush and Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan, the Altai and Hangai Mountains of Mongolia, the Zambezi escarpment of Zimbabwe, the Austrian Alps and even the Danube Valley of Hungary.

Ed’s passion for conservation drove him to educate others in the creation of Wild Strongholds, a film production company geared to entertain and educate the public about conservation efforts around the world. Wild Strongholds offers a unique perspective on the conservation efforts involving local communities, hunting companies, biologists, professional hunters, and governments around the world. The majority of hunters are misinterpreted and portrayed poorly by a very loud, vocal, and small subset of the world’s population. People in this world tend to listen to the loudest voices and it’s hard to ignore someone that’s screaming in your face. Ed’s mission is to sway public opinion and portray what beneficial impact hunting has on game around the world. It’s his hope that one day, there will be more snow leopards, more brown bears, more lynx, ibex, and sheep so that, one day when his daughter, asks him “Daddy is this how it used to be?” He can reply “No. it’s not. It’s much better now.”

About Hunting Matters
Tune in to “Hunting Matters” with Houston Safari Club Foundation Executive Director Joe Betar as he engages in conversations with guests, from various backgrounds, who have a passion for hunting and conservation. XS Sights Introduces R3D Night Sights for Kimber K6s Revolver

XS Sights is pleased to introduce R3D Nights Sights for the Kimber K6s. Owners of this compact, stainless-steel revolver who have trouble seeing their factory sights or simply wish to upgrade for better front sight visibility, day or night, now have the option of this highly effective 3-dot tritium notch and post sight.

The R3D front sight is equipped with XS’s proprietary Glow Dot with tritium center for dual illumination. The Glow Dot absorbs ambient light and glows in low light while also absorbing light from the tritium which continually charges the dot. This makes the front sight glow even brighter than the tritium rear sights which drives focus toward the front sight and downrange threat, enabling faster and more accurate target acquisition.

The high-contrast colored front sight is available in Orange or Green. The 2-dot, blacked-out  tritium rear sight illuminates to facilitate proper sight alignment without outshining the front sight for accurate indexing.

“Being able to see your sights in any light is critical in self-defense situations, and our R3D Night Sights are designed for this,” said Addison Monroe, Marketing Manager, XS Sights. “The R3D, with its Glow Dot technology and wider notch, is a significant upgrade that gives gun owners confidence in their ability to make the shot day or night.”

R3D sights are CNC machined from solid steel bar stock by XS Sights’ in-house machine shop in Ft. Worth Texas and have a 12-year warranty on the tritium. Gunsmith installation of these sights is recommended for the Kimber K6s as the front sight will need to be drilled for the retention pin. These sights do not fit the Kimber K6xs.

In Memoriam: Larry Pendergrass (1939-2023)

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is saddened to announce the passing of Major Larry Pendergrass, U. S. Army, Ret., on Sunday, May 14, 2023. Larry Pendergrass was one of the most significant contributors to the development of junior and competition shooting in the USA in the last three decades.  Larry’s countless deeds as a marksmanship instructor, mentor of youth, exacting range officer and wise counselor made the shooting sports better.

Larry was born in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.  He went on to build an incredible legacy filled with many remarkable experiences in his personal life, a distinguished military career and as a national and international shooting sports official.  He attended Southwest Missouri State College (now Missouri State University), earned a degree in mathematics, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant Artillery in 1961.  His career as an Army officer carried him around the world and included a tour in Vietnam (1967-68) as well as posts in Germany, Okinawa, and Korea. He retired from active duty in 1982 after 20 years of service.  His military honors included two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, and four Army Commendation Medals.

After retiring from the Army, Larry moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area where he became a JROTC Instructor at nearby Creekside High School.  There, he coached the Creekside High School Rifle Teams to five consecutive Georgia State High School Championships and was named Georgia’s High School Rifle Coach of the Year eight times.  After retiring as a JROTC Instructor, Larry became the Georgia High School Association’s Rifle Coordinator and State Championship Match Director, a position where he served for a decade.  The Georgia high school rifle program is the largest of its kind in the country.

In 1996, Larry was invited to join the staff for the sport of shooting at the Atlanta Olympic Games.  In subsequent years, Larry served as a match official and international judge in national and international championships that included several ISSF World Cups.   Larry’s competition officiating included service as the Chief Range Officer for the NCAA Rifle Championships from 2011 to 2019 as well as for several national junior championships organized by the CMP.

In 2003, when the CMP answered the call of the nation’s JROTC Commands to develop a new air rifle marksmanship training program, Larry was selected to be a member of the team of marksmanship experts who worked with the CMP to design the JROTC Marksmanship Instructor Course (JMIC) that is now used to train and certify all JROTC rifle marksmanship instructors.

1872 Mining Law Reform Legislation Launched in 118th Congress

The bicameral Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act would impose industry royalties and fees, fund abandoned mine cleanup, protect cultural, Tribal resources

WASHINGTON – The Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act, bicameral legislation that would modernize hardrock mining laws in the United States and fund the restoration of abandoned mines, was introduced this morning by House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM). The bills would make long-overdue updates to the 1872 General Mining Law, which has governed mining on U.S. public lands for more than 150 years.

The Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act would institute royalties and other fees on hardrock mining operations, requiring the industry to pay for its use of public resources. It not only would empower federal public land managers to protect important cultural areas, including Tribal areas; it would require them to consult with Tribes before permitting mining activities that would impact Tribal communities.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has consistently worked to enact legislation that would reform the antiquated 1872 Mining Law and commended today’s announcement.

“The General Mining Act of 1872 is an outdated relic from another era – yet it remains current law that needs to be modernized so that we can comprehensively address negatively impacted public lands and waters, fish and wildlife and hunting and angling opportunities,” said John Gale, BHA vice president of policy and government relations. “We applaud the determination of our congressional leaders to advance meaningful mining laws that establish more responsible provisions to meet modern-day needs.

Having a high quality EDC(Every Day Carry) flashlight allows you to know that you have a tool that is ready to work. You want a tool that is ready to work every single day and you can easily maintain that gear and know that it is ready work every day. Owning the right EDC gear is like having a first aid kit available to you when you need it and in some cases a first aid kit can be a part of your EDC depending on your level of preparedness. When we are hunting having a first aid kit and a headlamp and good knife are always a part of our EDC kit.

The NITECORE EDC27 Tactical Flashlight is an outstanding option for those looking for a high-quality, durable, and reliable flashlight for everyday carry. This flashlight is designed to withstand even the toughest conditions, and features a range of advanced features to help you navigate through low-light situations with ease. The flat design on this light fits easily on the belt and the turbo and strobe mode are simply outstanding.

Introducing the Arcade x Marsh Wear Belt Collection

Original Maker of Performance Stretch Belts and Lowcountry Lifestyle Brand Collaborate on Seasonal Collection Inspired by the Easy Living of the South and Good Times Spent Outside

Arcade (https://arcadebelts.com), a brand hard-wired to innovate was founded on the belief that belts could be designed and made better, to last longer, and be more comfortable – and Marsh Wear, a lowcountry fishing apparel company designing products for the pursuit of good times on and off the water, today announce a new collaboration released just in time for enjoying warmer days and long hours outside with good people.

The Arcade and Marsh Wear collaboration is rooted in real friendships and shared stories from time together chasing fish on western waters and Lowcountry tides. At the end of the day it’s simple: Arcade and Marsh Wear, two performance-driven, innovative, free-thinking brands, share a common passion and love for the outdoors and the people finding their place in it.

The one-of-a-kind, seasonal collection delivers four unique belt styles inspired by adventures on the water. The down-to-earth tones of each belt are paired with detailed designs highlighting life in the Lowcountry. The Cowabunga belt brings together jumping tarpon and a dancing longboarder, with pops of light pink, yellow, and blue. Crabby Mermaid features a stitched patch of a mermaid in pursuit of good times, on a light blue background. Leafy Camo is a staple with its subtle pattern and light beige colorway. Ride The Tide is a clean, classic light charcoal belt with fresh details, a camo tarpon patch and traditional camo belt loop keeper.

Each belt features Arcade’s new A2 buckle, a next generation belt that features an all new buckle design contoured to fit the body and rest in a natural position. Its intuitive tapered design increases the ease of fitting into and through belt loops, while the 3-piece buckle provides secure hold and durability.

The brand continues to open the door for women, men and families to build confidence, expand on their shooting abilities and live safely.

“After almost 15 years dedicated to empowering as many women as possible, I looked at the landscape of our industry and realized there was a dire need to expand our reach, brands and mission,” said Karen Butler, founder and president of SLG2, Inc. “Our Safe LivinG expansion proved the need for a stronger emphasis on public safety initiatives. With over 1,000 guests in the first quarter of 2023 alone, the Shoot Like A Girl and Safe LivinG trailers produced memories that will last a lifetime and lessons that will continue on for generations.”

The mobile ranges traveled 11,163 miles, using 1,972 gallons of fuel. This quarter, the guests represented a younger demographic. 60% of the guests were under 50 years old, with 2% of guests preferring not to report their age.

Report results showcased the exponential growth and immense need for confidence with shooting sports and personal, community and family safety. Prior to participation in the tour, 67% of attendees had positive attitudes toward firearms while 37% expressed improved attitudes after connecting with SLG2, Inc instructors. Home defense took the lead for the intended purpose of owning or training with a firearm, with recreational, on and off-body carry and hunting following close behind. Of the 62% of guests who plan to buy guns, 70% of guests committed to pistol sales, 24% to rifle and 14% to shotgun. After archery shooting during the 15-year expansion tour, 26% of the attendees planned to buy one or more bows.
