FED. JUDGE GRANTS PRELIM. INJUNCTION AGAINST TENETS OF NJ GUN LAW

A federal judge in New Jersey on Tuesday granted a preliminary injunction in part against certain tenets in the Garden State’s revised gun permit law, Chapter 131, chalking up a win for the Second Amendment Foundation and its lawsuit partners.

In her meticulously-researched 235-page ruling, Chief U.S. District Court Judge Renee Marie Bumb writes, “The Constitution leaves the States some measures to combat handgun violence. But what the Second Amendment prohibits the States from doing, and what the State of New Jersey has done here with much of Chapter 131, is to ‘prevent law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms.’ That is plainly unconstitutional.

“Bruen required the State to bring its firearm laws in compliance with the Second Amendment,” Judge Bumb adds. “Chapter 131 was the State’s response, but it went too far, becoming the kind of law that Founding Father Thomas Jefferson would have warned against since it ‘disarm[s] only those who are not inclined or determined to commit crimes [and] worsen[s] the plight of the assaulted, but improve[s] those of the assailants.’”

SAF is joined in this case by the Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners, New Jersey Second Amendment Society, Firearms Policy Coalition and three private citizens, Nicholas Gaudio, Jeffrey Muller and Ronald Koons, the latter for whom the case, Koons v. Platkin, is named. They are represented by attorney David Jensen of Beacon, N.Y.

“Judge Bumb’s ruling clearly recognizes the issues we raised with New Jersey’s restrictive gun law, and she’s fired a legal shot across the state’s bow,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “When New Jersey passed Chapter 131, it did away with the ‘justifiable need’ requirement, but replaced it with an equally egregious ‘sensitive places’ restriction to effectively prohibit carrying a legally-licensed handgun anywhere in the state. That just doesn’t pass the smell test.”

Herbicides and Weed Control with Chestnut Hill Outdoors

The essential elements necessary for plant growth – sunlight, soil nutrients, and moisture – are limited, and all plants compete for them. If landowners and managers want to maximize the bounty of their hard and soft mast-producing plants, they need to eliminate or at least reduce the competition. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers advice and information on how best to accomplish that.

Mechanical Removal

One obvious and direct way is by physically removing all grass and weeds down to bare soil in a 2 – 3 foot circle around the base of each tree. This competition-free zone can then be maintained by adding mulch or mats. In addition to retarding subsequent weed growth, this also moderates soil temperature extremes and improves soil moisture retention.

Chemical Removal

Another approach is to apply glyphosate-based broad-spectrum systemic herbicides. They’re more effective and less labor intensive but require extra care as they can be absorbed by trees and shrubs if not correctly applied.

TRAVELING WITH YOUR WILD WATER FLY FISHING GEAR

Most anglers arrange an extensive fly fishing trip to escape their busy day-to-day life, relax and unwind, and hook a few fish while at it. These trips are organized for a good time, hoping very little, if anything, goes wrong. But without proper attention paid to critical details that come with planning a successful outing into the wild, a minor oversight can take a fly fishing trip from one of the best days of your life to one of the most upsetting very quickly. What’s one of the anglers’ biggest mistakes before and during their fly fishing excursion? The mistake is often not pulling out all the stops to protect their fly fishing gear properly during travel. Nothing puts a damper on a fly fishing trip faster than damaged, unusable gear. With enough thought into getting your gear to and from your destination, you can minimize potential disaster and enjoy yourself out on the water with your equipment in perfect condition.

CLEARING AIRPORT SECURITY

Most major airline carriers make it easier on anglers by classifying fly fishing gear as checked luggage. In fact, almost every major airline sees fly fishing gear daily, so coming across yours shouldn’t come as any surprise. That being said, and especially if you are traveling with a smaller airline carrier, it would be wise to contact an agent who can assure you of what the airline deems permissible and what they do not. You want to avoid leaving precious gear behind or discovering at the gate that they don’t allow what you’ve got in your pack. Wild Water combos are ideal when flying or traveling in compact spaces because your gear is together secured in a safe tube.

It’s also essential to consider what items go in your checked luggage vs. what is stored in your carry-on. To make it easy, think of it this way; TSA only cares about what is inside your carry-on, whereas your airline carrier only cares about the weight and size of your checked luggage. If you even have to ask yourself whether or not a TSA agent might find an item dangerous, it should go in your checked bag. Items that come to mind which should be packed in your checked luggage are fishing line, pliers, knives, hooks, flies, etc. As for items easily deemed safe and permissible as carry-on, think of fly rods, reels, maps, fly vest, etc. These items are perfectly acceptable to join you on the plane as carry-on items. An obvious way to protect these items is to carry them in a Wild Water fly rod tube sporting storage pockets; not only are these typically designed within airlines’ weight and dimensions parameters, but they are also highly shock absorbent and can withstand any turbulence your flight may endure.

GETTING TO YOUR DESTINATION BY CAR

More often than not, you’ll be driving to your fly fishing spot rather than flying, which makes things easier since TSA is not monitoring your vehicle, but it deserves just as much consideration to protect your gear. Although fishermen back in the day would just set their fully rigged gear in the back of their pickup truck and head for their favorite tributary, over time, they’ve realized how much damage their rod and reel might take during the trip if stowed that way.

So many companies have come on the scene to give your rig a smoother, protected ride. If you are not renting a vehicle or often take your car out to fly fish, a fishing rod carrier such as a Riversmith River Quiver is hands down the best-looking form of protection for your fly rod and reel. Lightweight, easy to install, and engineered to be aerodynamic and compatible with any vehicle, they are also the most durable on the market and more able to withstand any shock, wind, or impact your car may have.

PINK JEEP TOURS BRANSON OFFERS NEW JAW-DROPPING ROCK DROP TOUR

BRANSON, MO – Pink® Jeep® Tours Branson is marking their one-year anniversary with a stunning addition to their signature Baird Mountain adventures: a 41-degree rock drop plummeting down into the quarry. It is the steepest trail descent across all five Pink Jeep locations, including the infamous “Road of No Return” in Sedona, Arizona.

This new element adds to adventures that have already been hailed by the Best of Branson vacation publication as the “Best of Branson Area Tour” and “Best New Attraction.”

“We are humbled and excited to have received these accolades and awards from everyone that voted for us last year. And this year, we can’t wait for our guests to experience the thrilling NEW Rock Drop and extended Rock Crawls that have been added to the Baird Mountain Rock Quarry,” said Gerald Jenkins, General Manager.

Before descending into the quarry, guided 4×4 tours venture off-road to traverse a native forest route to Baird Mountain’s summit. The scenic overlook provides expansive views like you’ve never seen of Table Rock Lake and the rolling Ozarks hills. On clear days, one can see for miles and miles. Topping the rush from the view is the excitement of a custom Pink Jeep Wrangler sliding into low gear, as it heads down into the Rock Quarry, making its way over to the extended, winding Rock Crawls.

“We recently had the opportunity to take our team on a Pink Jeep Tour through some of Branson’s most beautiful terrain. We were struck by the sheer power and agility of the Pink Jeep as we tackled the steep inclines and rocky descents of the quarry, bouncing along in our seats through the rough terrain. Our driver, the ever-so-charming Billy, was an expert at navigating the twists and turns of the landscape and provided interesting and fun facts about the local history. As we made our way through the rugged wilderness, we were treated to some of the most breathtaking scenery Branson has to offer at the highest point in Taney County with sweeping views of Table Rock Lake. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie looking for your next fix or simply someone who loves to explore the great outdoors, this is an experience that is not to be missed,” stated Aimee Corley Spangenberg, Sales Manager for Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center.

CCI Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary of 17 HMR Rimfire Ammunition Production

Twenty years ago the Product Development team at CCI set out to create several loads for the then-brand-new 17 HMR cartridge. Introduced in 2002, Hornady – working with both Marlin and Ruger – released the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, or the .17 HMR, as it has come to be known. It was created by necking down the .22 WMR to hold bullets of 0.172-inch diameter. In 2003, CCI released several loads in this cartridge to help fill the need in the marketplace for more options, many of which are now a standard within the industry.

“17 HMR has devastating terminal effect, is flat shooting, and highly accurate, maximizing effective range of rimfire ammo,” said Mike Overberg, CCI’s Director of Factory Operations. “All of our .17 HMR products were designed and engineered to maximize the effectiveness of this small, fast, and powerful rimfire cartridge; especially when it comes to hunting small game, shooting varmints, and drilling targets.”

Currently, CCI manufactures seven different 17- or 20-grain loads in different product packaging options in 17 HMR. This includes A17 Varmint Tipped, Gamepoint, Full Metal Jacket (FMJ), V-Max, VNT, TNT and TNT Green. With the most popular being VNT for varmint or target shooting, and Gamepoint for small game.

Get hooked on crappies this spring

There is no doubt the fish species that can send the largest number of anglers to the banks during the spring outbreak of fishing fever is crappies.

Everyone loves to sit on a shoreline on a warm afternoon and experience a good crappie bite. What can an angler do to maximize the number of spring days catching crappies?

Crappies love warm areas; they also love bays, coves, corners and similar areas that are protected from the wind, especially cold north and northwest winds. Find cover in those warming areas — emergent vegetation, stalks of last summer’s submerged vegetation, brush piles, fallen trees or beaver lodges — and you likely will find some spring crappies. Rocks and rocky habitats also hold fish, but, on many Nebraska reservoirs, those hold more crappies later in the spring after the water has warmed more.

Where did they go?

Fish for crappies on a beautiful spring afternoon and everything can be grand. Go back the next day when the wind is blowing and you will be lucky to dry off one crappie. In some cases, those crappies may be in the same spot, just tucked deeper into cover, but it is more likely they went toward deeper water.

NEW SPYPOINT FLEX G-36 AND LM2CELLULAR TRAIL CAMERAS NOW IN STORES

Two of the latest cellular trail cameras from SPYPOINT are now shipping and available in retailers across the country.

The FLEX G-36 and LM2 from SPYPOINT offer hunters an unparalleled combination of performance and value, along with the flexibility they want to help select a camera that suits their needs and budget.

The FLEX G-36 builds on the success of the SPYPOINT FLEX camera that was introduced last year. The camera takes 36MP photos and 1080p videos with sound, both of which are transmitted to the SPYPOINT app thanks to the innovative dual-sim setup of the camera which eliminates the need to select or worry about a carrier model. The new FLEX G-36 also delivers enhanced connectivity and improved battery life over the original FLEX.

The LM2 is built on the hugely popular LINK-MICRO platform and delivers 20MP photos. If the camera looks familiar it’s because it is rooted in the original LINK-MICRO design, the most popular cellular trail camera of all time, but in addition to the 20MP photos, adds optimized connectivity thanks to a new antenna design and a larger 90-foot flash and detection range.

“We’re excited for our users to get the new cameras in their hands,” said Jean-Francois Boyer, Vice President of Marketing at SPYPOINT. “The consumer feedback after ATA and SHOT Show was hugely positive, and the retailers were excited to see the new innovations as well. The scouting season will be starting in earnest soon, and we can’t wait to see the successes of our customers this fall,” he concluded.

Delta Waterfowl’s University Hunting Program is Flourishing for Wildlife Students

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — Delta’s University Hunting Program, which had its genesis at Louisiana State University in the late-1990s when Dr. Frank Rohwer organized hunts for his wildlife students, has grown exponentially since becoming a formal Delta program in 2017.

Many of today’s wildlife management students do not come from families with hunting backgrounds. UHP introduces these future wildlife management professionals to waterfowl hunting so they understand the important role it plays in conservation. In addition, UHP aims to recruit students to become lifelong waterfowl hunters who will introduce their families and friends to our world.

In 2021, Delta held UHP events at 36 universities with 222 students despite COVID-19 challenges. The program doubled in 2022, with 415 students from 72 universities taking part throughout North America.

“We met all of our UHP goals for 2022,” said Jacob Bushaw, Delta’s R3 coordinator for the United States. “We had great events at so many universities, including Cornell University, Ohio State University, and the University of Florida. We had 20 wildlife students at the Florida UHP, and most of them had never held a gun before that event.”

Aidan Flores, Delta’s R3 coordinator for New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas, reported that 16 universities in the region took part in UHP, and he hopes to add eight more in 2023.

“My XRS3 worked flawlessly across the entire course of fire,” Brantley said. “The G4P reticle is fine enough to make the small holds for wind and differences in distance, yet open enough to see everything going on down range. The scope tracks perfectly and lets you focus on shooting because you know the data is dead on all the way out.”

Brantley also relied on his RCBS reloading setup to prepare for the match, including his Rock Chucker® Supreme PressMatchmaster diesBench PrimerCase Prep CenterChargemaster Supreme powder dispenser and Ultrasonic Case Cleaner.

“The process and tools of the RCBS lineup allows me to put out perfect ammo,” Brantley said. “Having that level of control over all the variables lets me trust where every single round goes.”
