Federal Ammunition Sponsors Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors

Federal Ammunition ® renewed their sponsorship of the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors program, giving more children the opportunity to experience the great outdoors.

Federal Ammunition has renewed their sponsorship commitment to help expand and grow the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors program that gives children the opportunity to experience the great outdoors.

Vice President Brittany French said, “the youth in our program have expressed 3 barriers to getting involved in the outdoors. Those barriers include not knowing where to hunt or fish, not having the correct skill set and confidence to go, and not having anyone to go with. Those barriers are the reason we get excited to go to work everyday. We are working tenaciously to break those barriers by coordinating outdoor opportunities for youth through mentorship.”

“Youth experience challenges and hurdles every day and while we attempt to increase participation in hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors we need to work together with partners to remove these barriers to entry. Pass it On – Outdoor Mentors does a tremendous job working with state wildlife agencies and other partners to get more youth involved in hunting and shooting sports and Federal is proud to support their continued efforts.” said Jon Zinnel, Federal Ammunition’s Youth Shooting Sports Sr. Manager.

Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors partners with state fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations and youth organizations to give at-risk children outdoor opportunities they would not have had otherwise.  “Too many children today never get the chance to experience the great outdoors we all know and love.  When you hear a youngster say they’ve never seen a cow or been on a dirt road, you know we must step up our efforts to get these children opportunities to get outdoors,” stated French.

Burris Introduces New Laser Rangefinding Binoculars for 2023

Greeley, CO – Experienced hunters and shooters know that a solid pair of binos is a must-have piece of equipment. Whether still-hunting or evaluating game at distance, quality binoculars significantly put the odds of success in your favor. Equally important is the ability to range game with a precision rangefinder— especially glassing from a mountainside, peering through the woods from a treestand or ground blind, to quickly ranging targets during a competition.

Now, Burris combines these two gear essentials into a single unit with the new Signature LRF 10×42 rangefinding binoculars and redefines fast and accurate ranging.

The integrated rangefinder in the Signature LRF 10×42 offers everything needed to range game in any environment and to provide essential data for ballistic management. Capable of delivering blazing fast results ranging to 2600 yards with a crystal-clear image, the Signature LRF 10×42 presents information in an easy-to-interpret heads-up display. Data points presented include five ranging options: line-of-sight (LOS) only, horizontal distance (HOR) only, LOS and HOR, LOS and angle (ANG) above and below horizontal, and HOR and ANG. This information allows long distance shooters to ensure their ranging and trajectory compensation will put projectiles on target. In fact, the Signature LRF 10×42 is accurate to within 1 yard at under 1,000 yards and ±2 yards at ranges over 1,000 yards.

Additionally, the Signature LRF 10×42 comes with five ranging modes:

Auto – displays the range of the target with the strongest return signal.Sport – displays the range of the closes target in a group.Hunt – displays the farthest range of a group of targets.Scan – virtually instantaneous readings in range with the range button depressed.

The Signature LRF 10×42 is based on the proven Burris Signature HD series binos and the years of research integrating quick and powerful rangefinders in products like the Eliminator riflescope and Oracle bowsights. In keeping with the advanced Signature HD optical design, the Signature LRF 10×42 binoculars deliver class-leading performance in terms of image sharpness and edge-to-edge clarity courtesy of the multi-coated HD lenses and BaK-4 roof prisms. Housed in a rugged, shockproof chassis with no-slip rubber armor, the 10x42mm optic assembly provides the kind of low-glare, high-resolution, optimal color fidelity performance discerning hunters demand.

From Humble Beginnings

As Vermont’s 50th wild turkey season opens up, both the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and the NWTF are celebrating a shared 50 years of wild turkey conservation.

When turkey hunting in New England today, it’s hard to imagine a landscape once devoid of wild turkeys. But it’s true; the wild turkey was extirpated entirely from the region, mainly due to rapid deforestation for agriculture in the mid-1800s. At the peak of deforestation across the six states, from about 1830 to 1880, it is estimated that up to 80% of the landscape was cleared. With significant deforestation and unregulated hunting, it’s no wonder wild turkeys disappeared. However, like many regions, New England’s wild turkey restoration was an incredible success, now possessing some of the best turkey habitat and hunting in the entire country.

While the NWTF celebrates 50 years of mission delivery, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is celebrating its 50th year of wild turkey hunting. The coinciding anniversaries shed light on how far the wild turkey has come – both across the nation and in Vermont – in just 50 years. It also underscores the productive partnership the NWTF and the department have forged over the decades to ensure wild turkeys continue to thrive while also introducing new hunters to the spring season and conservation.

Vermont was not unlike the rest of New England: wild turkeys originally were found in the southern two-thirds of Vermont, until the mid-1800s when Vermont’s forested area was reduced to an estimated 25%, ultimately eliminating the wild turkey from the landscape.

The Wild Turkey in Vermont: A film made decades ago chronicling the restoration of the wild turkey in the Green Mountain State. The film includes captivating vintage 16mm film footage that highlights the first wild turkey releases in the state in 1969. Video courtesy of VFWD.

In 1968, Vermont’s wild turkey restoration program started when the VFWD determined that forests across the state had bounced back enough to support wild turkeys again. But with no turkeys, the department had to start from scratch.

Dark Energy Poseidon Pro

I met Garrett Aida the founder of Dark Energy way back in 2016 at a trade show and I took a serious look at his product. The products from Dark Energy are very well thought out and I really liked Garrett so I bought two of them to connect to my ipad and my iphone and I bought one for my new wife. We took these on our honeymoon, 21 days across the country and we found them to be exceptional at keeping all of our devices charged and running. We wrote about the Poseidon product way back in 2016.

Later that year, I took 2 of these on a hunt with me in Manitoba and it was on the verge of being unbearably cold and they held up exceptionally well in that cold environment, me not quite as much. Over the years, we have tested dozens of these kinds of battery backup devices, some of them have been good and a few have been exceptional but over the last 8 years the device that keeps getting thrown into my go bag has been the Poseidon.

This year at SHOT show, I was walking the aisles down in the basement of SHOT. Most of the media refers to this area as the dungeon cause it has this underground feel with no natural light but walking around the corner you could see the smile of Garrett in the Dark Energy Booth lighting up the place with is team. They were back at SHOT and they had launched the Poseidon Pro as well as the Mavrik Stand for charging.

The new Poseidon Pro comes with the ability to submerge it to 6 feet of water for 45 minutes with an IP68 rating. The new device comes with USB and USB C allowing you to fast charge and provides up to 36 hours of power for your cell phone. The new package for the Poseidon Pro comes with a 3 foot USB C to USB C cable as well as a 5 in 1 Multi-tool Carabiner Pro that you can use to clip the device to your pack. The Carabiner is a little heavy for me so I swapped it out with a lightweight one and gave the 5 in 1 to a young kid I am mentoring.

The Mavrik Stand is a 15W Magsafe wireless charging stand and it works perfectly. I honestly wish I had picked up a couple more of these, one for my desk in my office and one for the wife. I had this on my desk for quite some time but it has migrated to the night stand in my bedroom. It allows me to set up the phone, easily know where it is and if I need to know the time, I just tap on the phone and I can see the time easily and my phone is charged and perfect in the morning.

Backstory of the Bassmaster Classic-Winning Technique

Jeff Gustafson & the legendary Lindners chronicle deepwater bass ‘moping’ breakthroughs

Thirteen hundred miles north of the Tennessee River; twenty years before Jeff Gustafson won the recent Bassmaster Classic— long before live sonar screens rewrote the rules of angling engagement— hanging a minnow was already boating tournament-winning bass in a big way.

Until then, Gussy’s Classic winning presentation was widely viewed as a niche technique—something that only worked up north for suspended or deepwater smallmouth bass. Perhaps most anglers still view moping—vertically hover-jigging with buoyant Jerk ShadZ superplastics—as super specialized, similar to the way anglers once regarded offshore bass patterns, in general.

Interestingly, a week after Gussy won the 2023 Classic, Aric Szambelan of Missouri State University finished just 3 ounces shy of winning the Bassmaster College Series qualifier at Cherokee Lake, Tennessee—you guessed it, moping a ¼-ounce jig and Scented Jerk ShadZ.

“The truth is, I caught fish with this same bait and method in at least half of last year’s Bassmaster Elite tournaments,” divulges Gustafson, who also tapped the technique to win the 2021 Bassmaster Elite event at the Tennessee River. The Keewatin, Ontario bass pro says he’s now earned over half a million dollars with a jig and Z-Man® Scented Jerk ShadZ— the prized presentation he calls his best bait of all time. He’s won or nearly won numerous other derbies on Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods, Ontario, all the way to Lake Champlain, New York, dating back almost two decades.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas for the Hunting Mom

By Bethany Beathard

Time to ditch the web suggested lists. Stop roaming the ‘Mother’s Day aisle’ in the department stores. Get her something she really wants or could use! Here are a few gift suggestions you could consider for the special outdoors woman in your life.

New Hunting Apparel!

Most women love new clothes or would appreciate updated items. With the advancement in female hunting apparel lines, these leading companies have really put the “designed for women, by women” creation into reality. Outdoor gear has never before had the feminine fit and functionality like it does today! Starting off with a bang, DSG Outerwear just released a new line up of women’s 2023 hunting apparel. Just in time for spring, we have their Bexley 3.0 collection, made of a lightweight breathable ripstop material that is water repellent in light rain. Perfect for your dewy spring mornings or misty afternoons. The Bexley 3.0 comes in sizes XXS-5XL and is offered in four different camo patterns: Realtree Edge, Excape and Timber, as well as Mossy Oak Obsession.

Thinking ahead to late season, have you ever noticed women tend to get colder faster than men? Dr. Rob Danoff, of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, explains that “women have a lower metabolic rate, and tend to produce less heat than men do, which makes them feel colder.” Again, companies like DSG Outerwear have begun addressing this issue and created heated gear tailored to women. They offer a heated vest, heated wool blend socks and heated gloves made with a fantex waterproof membrane.  Each item comes with a rechargeable battery providing up to 5 hours of use. In addition to their heated gear, DSG Outerwear has produced a variety of insulated options. Instead of offering only early season and late season choices, they have created an assortment of selections varying by insulation. Now, we are seeing mid-season or mid to late season collections. Furthermore, the female boot collections have expanded, producing boots from 400 gram up to 1400 gram! We all know Mother Nature accommodates no one and we are going to have to endure the elements. However, the excuse of the frigid temperatures is no longer a reason to keep her from staying outdoors. I know the thought of shopping may also scare a few of you. Many people do not like to purchase clothing due to the difference in sizing, especially, when purchasing over the internet. Don’t fret, most outdoor female outdoor clothing lines offer gift cards. This is a great way to be intentional about the outdoor gift without buying items three sizes off!

Norris’ Hennecke wins Cornhusker Cup

Zach Hennecke lost one shoot-off Saturday in the 53rd Cornhusker Trap Shoot, but he made the next one – the one that really counted.

The Norris sophomore fought off Tanner Parrish of Lincoln Southeast in a shoot-off for the Cornhusker Cup, the shoot’s overall championship. Minutes earlier, Parrish defeated Hennecke in a shoot-off for the handicap yardage title at 24-25 yards.

It didn’t turn out to be a day to inspire confidence at the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association in Doniphan, Nebraska. The morning was fairly calm, but afternoon brought hours of wind gusts, some up to 50 mph.

That’s OK. Hennecke wasn’t so sure of himself anyway.

“I was not very confident coming in,” Hennecke said. “I was put on a lot of lower squads all year and I knew and had to make it happen.”

Celebrate Wisconsin’s Vital Rural And Urban Forests This Arbor Day

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages the public to celebrate Friday, April 28 as Arbor Day in Wisconsin and April 22-28 as Forest Appreciation Week.

Arbor Day, an annual observance promoting tree planting and care, has been celebrated in Wisconsin on the last Friday of April since 1883. Forest Appreciation Week, which spans Earth Day on April 22 through Arbor Day, is a time to reflect on the importance of trees and forests in our lives.

“Forests are deeply ingrained into the culture of Wisconsin,” said Heather Berklund, DNR Chief State Forester. “Wisconsin’s rural and urban forests serve a vital role in our local and statewide economy and environmental health.”

The 17 million acres of forests covering nearly half of Wisconsin and the millions of urban trees across the state safeguard water resources, provide wildlife habitat and support our forest industry, while providing myriad outdoor recreation opportunities, supporting human health and mitigating impacts of the changing climate.

Investments in tree planting and forest stewardship by communities, homeowners and forest landowners are key to ensuring that Wisconsin continues to have healthy and sustainable urban and rural forests that support stronger and more resilient communities.

House Bills Would Weaken, Strip Funding from Land and Water Conservation Fund

BHA roundly condemns suite of House bills that would undermine America’s most successful conservation and access program

WASHINGTON – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is strongly criticizing four bills in the House of Representatives that take aim at the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Great American Outdoors Act, the bipartisan law that ensures continued LWCF funding.

Together the four bills would hamstring the ability of public land management agencies to strategically acquire areas of important fish and wildlife habitat and places key to public access. H.R. 2207H.R. 2158 and H.R. 2169 would defund the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service public land acquisition via LWCF funds. H.R. 2153 would severely limit the Bureau of Land Management from acquiring public land with a funding cap of $28 million, less than half of the proposed budget. Prohibiting these agencies from using all of LWCF’s tools will lead to management inefficiencies and preclude critical investments that expand public access.

Hunters and anglers, including BHA members and supporters, have played a key role in sustaining LWCF, America’s most popular and successful conservation and access program. BHA members helped achieve passage, in 2019, of the bipartisan Dingell Act, which permanently reauthorizes LWCF, and subsequently, passage of the Great American Outdoors Act in 2020. With strong, bipartisan support led by Republicans and Democrats, the Great American Outdoors Act was advanced by three quarters of members of Congress and signed into law by President Trump – a strong supporter of the program. GAOA secures full, permanent funding for LWCF at $900 million annually, guaranteeing the program’s continued ability to conserve important habitat and recreational lands and waters all across America.

“Together, hunters and anglers have notched some critical wins for conservation in recent years,” said John Gale, BHA vice president of policy and government relations, “but our constant vigilance is critical, as there will always be forces trying to take away those victories. Today, we stand united in opposing legislation that would steal one of our greatest gains for conservation yet this century, and today, we remain committed to keeping Land and Water Conservation Fund dollars working on behalf of conservation, public access and our hard-won outdoor traditions.

Primary Weapons Systems to Display New BDE Suppressors at CANCON

PWS (Primary Weapons Systems) will be one of many premium suppressor and firearm manufacturers at the bi-annual CANCON: A Fully Suppressed Range Day by RECOIL Magazine. Attendees will get a chance to shoot an array of PWS firearms with the new BDE line of suppressors at the live range event at the Ben Avery Range in Phoenix, Arizona.

CANCON is a newly formed bi-annual event hosted by RECOIL Magazine showcasing some of the industry’s top firearms and suppressors paired together for a uniquely quiet range day. Individuals are able to interact with multiple firearms and suppressor companies at this live fire range event while getting to shoot new and exciting products for the first time. There will be giveaways, live fire challenges, demonstrations, and even a night shoot with thermal optics at CANCON.

The BDE (Bravo Delta Echo) line is Primary Weapons Systems’ new line of suppressors with caliber options including the BDE 762, BDE 556, BDE 9mm and BDE 22. The entire lineup is lighter and quieter than other suppressors on the market, with the BDE 22 currently the lightest suppressor on the market rated for 5.7x28mm. The BDE 762, BDE 556 and BDE 9mm are all 3D printed with aerospace-grade titanium and the BDE 22 has a 3D printed core. Each suppressor in the BDE collection improves the range experience, making this line the perfect addition to a fully suppressed range day.
