Be Aware And Stay Safe DuringSpring Turkey Hunting Season

Youth Hunt Opens April 15; Hunting Season Opens April 19

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds turkey hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to be aware and stay safe during the 2023 spring turkey season April 19 through May 30, 2023. The youth turkey hunt is April 15-16, 2023.

Hunters and public land users may be sharing fields and forests during the season and need to be aware and alert of others in their area. Hunters should follow safety rules, and non-hunters enjoying public lands should consider wearing blaze orange.

Hunter camouflage is an important part of hunting turkey, but it may also present a problem. The better camouflaged and concealed you are, the less likely another hunter will be able to see you, and the more likely you could be mistaken for a turkey.

Wearing the wrong color could put turkey hunters at risk. It’s especially important to avoid wearing red, white or blue. If a fellow hunter sees a flash of those colors through the brush, you could be mistaken for a turkey.

To dress for success and safety, follow these tips from the National Wild Turkey Federation:

P2P on Display at NRA Annual Meetings

Prepared 2 Protect® products will be on display at booth 3242 at the NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits. Held from April 14-16 in Indianapolis, it is the largest annual gathering of NRA members.

P2P products fire incapacitating, less lethal pepper rounds. They are a great alternative for locations where firearms are prohibited or for individuals who choose not to use a firearm in certain situations.

“Our less lethal lineup of self defense and home defense products empower people with the confidence and ability to protect what matters the most,” Justin Biddle, vice president of marketing, said. “Whether you’re hiking, jogging, shopping or doing any everyday activity, P2P helps you protect yourself, your family or your possessions by slowing the threat and allowing you to get to a safe place.”

The HDP 50 is a full-sized pistol that holds six .50-caliber pepper rounds. Launched by a CO2 cartridge, the HDP 50 can be stored with the cartridge sealed. A sharp slap of the Quick Pierce System quickly charges the pistol when needed. The HDP 50 Compact is a smaller, more concealable option that holds four rounds.

In addition to pepper rounds, P2P pistols can fire inert chalk practice rounds or rubber rounds so users can become familiar and confident with its use so they are prepared to protect.

East Dakota Chapter Holds 30th Annual Banquet

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — On April 1, 2023, the East Dakota Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its 30th annual banquet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The banquet raised funds for wildlife conservation projects and preserving hunting heritage in the state.

At the banquet, 204 attendees enjoyed a meal and had the opportunity to participate in silent and live auctions and several raffles. These activities raised funds and awareness to support the NWTF’s conservation initiatives.

During the banquet, plaques were awarded to donors who have generously supported the chapter and banquet over the past 30 years. Additionally, five members of the East Dakota committee — Dean Schueler, Duane Albers, Jon Soderholm, Ron Schauer and Mark Anderson — were recognized and honored with plaques for their dedication to the chapter for 30 years.

During the banquet, South Dakota Rep. Jessica Bahmuller presented the NWTF East Dakota Chapter with the 50th Anniversary legislative commemoration, recognizing the NWTF’s pivotal role in wildlife management research, habitat conservation and preservation of outdoor traditions in the United States. Randy Gaskins, NWTF senior regional director, read the commemoration to those present at the event.

The NWTF East Dakota Chapter holds the distinction of being the longest-running chapter in South Dakota. In recognition of its exceptional contributions to conservation efforts, the NWTF awarded the East Dakota Chapter the prestigious Golden Gobbler status (50% net-to-gross profit), which only 18 chapters across the nation have achieved for over 25 years — 29 consecutive years for the East Dakota Chapter. Moreover, the chapter has raised over $1.5 million to support conservation initiatives since 1993.

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) has expanded the Ruger® Mark IV 22/45 Lite family of rimfire pistols with a new model that features a mounting position for a standard Shield RMS footprint reflex optic in place of the Picatinny rail. It also features a raised front fiber optic sight and an adjustable rear sight that co-witness with most micro red dot optics. Ruger Introduces the ReadyDot™ Micro Reflex Optic

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is pleased to introduce the Ruger® ReadyDot micro reflex optic. The Ruger ReadyDot is an ultra-reliable 1X reflex sight designed specifically to co-witness with the Ruger MAX-9® pistol, but the low-profile sight also fits any compact handgun with a standard Shield RMSc footprint. The use of a reflex sight like the Ruger ReadyDot allows the shooter to keep both eyes open and focus on the target, rather than the front sight.

Unlike optics that utilize batteries and electronics to generate their aiming dot, the Ruger ReadyDot utilizes the light-gathering properties of fiber optics, so it is self-adjusting for brightness and never needs a battery. Adding to the robustness of the unit, it is a fixed, non-adjustable sight with a large 15 MOA dot optimized for rapid target acquisition at pistol distances. Eliminating features that are unnecessary for close range pistol shooting makes this the most rugged and reliable, waterproof and shock resistant pistol optic available.

For more information or to order your Ruger ReadyDot visit ShopRuger.com or your local independent retailer of Ruger firearms.

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Spring Fruit

The nutritional needs of wildlife vary throughout the year, and to better meet those changes, it’s essential to plant a variety of hard and soft mast-producing trees and shrubs. Hard mast addresses the late season, but spring and early summer are also critical nutritional periods that are best addressed by planting soft mast. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers an array of soft mast producers ideal for filling nutrition calendar gaps.

Mulberries

Mulberries are among the first shrubs to bear fruit in spring, as early as April and May in the deep south, and early June further north – peak periods for young and growing wildlife. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several varieties. Everbearing mulberry (Morus rubra), which includes black, white, and native red varieties, grows in a bush-like form, providing abundant fruit and cover – another important component of wildlife habitat. Black mulberry (Morus nigra) grows in a taller tree form and produces what many consider the highest quality mulberry fruits.

All trees are shipped bare-root.

Rigby engraver Karen Wallace winsThe Cartier Award for Excellence

Renowned London gunmaker, John Rigby & Co, is proud to announce that their talented engraver, Karen Wallace, has won the prestigious Jacques Cartier Award for Excellence, presented at the 2023 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship and Design Awards. Karen entered a Rigby bolt action rifle magazine floor plate that she had made, which was beautifully carved with scrollwork.

The Cartier Award for Excellence is a national award that recognises exceptional craftsmanship and artistry in jewellery making and other related fields. Independent jewellers and artisans from around the world are invited to submit their work for consideration. Out of all the gold medal winners, only one piece is selected as the winner of Cartier excellence. This award has been presented for 65 years, but it has only been awarded 43 times, as it is only given if there is a clear winner that meets the highest standards of excellence.

Karen Wallace’s winning entry is particularly noteworthy because it is the only time that someone has won with an item that is not made from gold nor silver. It is also the only gun engraving or anything related to gunmaking that has ever won the award. Karen’s beautiful scrollwork on the Rigby bolt action rifle magazine floor plate impressed the judges with its exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Rigby has a long and distinguished history as one of the world’s leading gunmakers. Founded in 1775, the company has been at the forefront of gunmaking technology for over two centuries. Today, they continue to produce some of the finest sporting rifles and shotguns available, using the latest manufacturing techniques and the highest quality materials.

Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We are proud to have Karen Wallace as part of their team of skilled artisans. Her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft are a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence. The Cartier Award for Excellence is a well-deserved recognition of Karen’s exceptional talent and the outstanding quality of her work. The team congratulates her on the achievement and look forward to continuing to produce the finest sporting rifles and shotguns for discerning customers around the world.”

Ranew’s Outdoor Equipment Offers a Full Line of Implements for all your Food Plot Needs

The Firminator G3 is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry, allowing the entire process of planting a food plot – plowing, planting, and packing the soil – from start to finish with one implement. However, for those who already own tillage equipment but still want all the other features and advantages of a Firminator, there’s a stand-alone Firmiseeder.

Like the G3 unit, the Firmiseeder features Firminator’s Accurate Seeding System, which can handle any seed size, from large corn, soybeans, peas, and sunflowers to the tiniest clovers without the need to change seed hoppers. The Accurate Seeding System’s easily adjustable metering openings ensure seeds are spread in the right amount.

Because the system is ground-driven, the seed is metered out relative to the travel speed, allowing the user to control the seeding rate. The optional seed hopper agitator keeps seeds thoroughly mixed, preventing smaller seeds from sifting through too quickly. So it evenly spreads seed blends with extreme size differences in a single pass. When the unit stops, an automatic shut-off prevents wasteful spills that occur with other hopper types.

Simply spreading seeds is not enough. Post-spread packing is also essential, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact for better germination rates and protection from wind deflection. The Firmiseeder also has the Firminator’s commercial-grade culti-packer. As the Firmiseeder moves forward, seeds are dropped into a specially designed baffle that thoroughly distributes them before the culti-packer, which rolls over the seeds and compacts soil.
