Top Tactics for Springtime ‘Eyes

Walleye whisperers share early-season go-to techniques and presentations

Springtime has arrived throughout all but the uppermost reaches of North America, ushering in some of the best angling of the year for everything from perch to pike. It’s an exciting time for all anglers, but particularly so for anyone targeting mobs of migrating walleyes headed to their predictable pre-spawn and spawn locations. This game is played wherever walleyes are found, but the big-league action takes place in a handful of premier systems. Walleye factories like the Mississippi River, Lake Erie and the Detroit River, Saginaw Bay in Michigan, the Missouri River, Wisconsin’s Green Bay – including the Menominee and Fox Rivers – and Northern Minnesota’s Rainy River represent a few of the premier arenas.

We asked two top walleye guides, Brian Bashore and Tony Roach, to share their favorite presentations for targeting springtime ‘eyes.

Brain Bashore

The Missouri River is prolific walleye water. Just ask Sioux Falls, South Dakota NWT tournament pro and guide, Brian Bashore. The St. Croix pro-staffer and co-owner of The Walleye Guys Guide Service says the mighty Mo near Chamberlain, South Dakota is the place to be once the ice clears from the river.

New all-titanium PinUltimate Quick-Release Hitch Pin makes securing/removing your51hitch faster and easier than ever.6

If you tow a trailer, you’ve dealt with hitch pins, those ordinary, utilitarian steel rods that are prone to rusting and are typically secured by clumsy “R-clips” that everyone hates and that invariably result in a knuckle-scraping experience.

PinUltimate is different. The clever ConnecTrick push-button, quick-release, in-line design is so much better. You simply depress the ergonomically positioned thumb button on   PinUltimate’s handle. This releases positive locking balls that protrude from the shaft releasing the cap on the opposite end. With the cap removed, the pin is free to slide in or out.

To re-attach the cap, just depress the thumb button and push the cap back in place.

All this happens in mere seconds and is done easily in tight quarters, far easier than R-clips which work perpendicular to the pin shaft requiring more space to operate. With PinUltimate there are no clips, no cross-stream maneuvers, no scraped knuckles and no wasted time. It’s so easy, you can do it in the dark!

The PinUltimate pin itself is made of premium, heat-treated 6AL4V (Ti-64) titanium. This  means you can be confident that it will work flawlessly even if exposed to saltwater or road salt (it is backed by a lifetime warranty). The handle is ergonomically designed and fully CNC-machined from aircraft-grade billet aluminum and then treated with a special UV resistant “power red” Cerakote® finish formulated specifically for PinUltimate to further protect it from the elements.

Extar USA Announces the EP45!

Firearm innovator Extar USA has taken its popular EP9 platform to the next level with a much anticipated .45 ACP version, the EP45!

As requested by consumers, Extar kept the same ultra-compact and light weight design. The EP45 is fed using Glock-pattern pistol magazines and thanks to Extar’s unique recoil system, shoots about as softly as the 9mm does; leaving other direct-blowback designs in the dust and challenging some of the best delayed-blowback options.

Another achievement by Extar with the EP45 was engineering a .45 ACP large-format pistol that could be useful as more than just a range toy.

The EP45 Runs Hollow Points!

A long-known struggle for many firearms chambered in .45 ACP has been with hollow points. The issue comes from a shorter overall loaded length and lack of a rounded nose to help in feeding.

Henry Donates $25,000 to Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever

Henry Repeating Arms, one of the country’s leading firearms manufacturers and longtime supporter of the nation’s leading wildlife and habitat conservation groups is proud to announce a donation of $25,000 to Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. This donation is part of Henry’s $1 million silver anniversary pledge and the company’s commitment to safeguarding America’s outdoors and hunting traditions.

“Our longstanding partnership with Henry Repeating Arms has fundraised countless dollars for local volunteers to improve habitat and access in their communities,” said Marilyn Vetter, President and CEO of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “This incredible donation will ensure that wildlife habitat will continue to thrive for generations to come. Thank you to Henry Repeating Arms for its steadfast commitment to upland landscapes throughout the pheasant and quail range.”

Driven primarily through donations and grassroots chapter efforts, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever share a common mission of conserving upland bird populations and other wildlife through habitat improvements, educational outreach, public access, and conservation advocacy at the federal level.

Since 1982, the organizations have improved over 24 million acres and, together with local, state, and federal agencies, have acquired over 225,000 acres that will forever be protected for use by the public.

“Perhaps more than any other pursuit, bird hunting is what gets me excited, and it is important to me personally that we continue to see the success of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever,” says Andy Wickstrom, President of Henry Repeating Arms. “Especially here in the Midwest, we see wildlife habitat constantly under threat of industry and expansion, so I applaud the more than 400,000 members, partners, and donors of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever for their unwavering conservation efforts.”

ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR OUTDOOR CAMPING

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT OUTDOOR MEAL WITH SMITHS CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Outdoor enthusiasts know one thing to be true anywhere, anytime: nothing tastes better than after it’s cooked over a fire. From morning coffee to midnight snacks, a bed of coals in the woods makes it better than our stoves at home ever could. Fortunately, whether in hunting camp, a picnic spot, drive-in campsite, or a far-flung shore, there are only a few tools needed for making those culinary dreams come true.

VERSATILE GEAR FOR THE WIN

Because there is often limited room for gear on our outdoor adventures, one key attribute is versatility. Items that can perform multiple tasks are invaluable, because gear capacity and weight are often at a premium.

TRIPOD GRILLS

A great example of versatility is tripod grills [like those made by Coleman or Coghlan’s]. They can be used for direct grilling of foods, or to suspend cookware like kettles and pans over the fire. The circular grate is suspended between three legs, which also makes it self-leveling. It can also be raised and lowered according to the fire’s condition and cooking needs. Need more heat? Lower it down nearer the coals. Want to let things simmer or simply keep warm? Raise it up again.

FILLET KNIVES

Despite their name, fillet knives can be exceptionally versatile. In addition to making whole fish into smaller, boneless parts, they can be used to prepare other meats. Like de-boning pork chops or trimming fat or sinew from cuts of beef or venison. Flexible, nimble blades carve easily around bones and cartilage. Their thin profiles are also excellent for slicing vegetables like zucchini or mushrooms. This is especially true for many delicate wild mushrooms, like maitake, morels, and chicken of the woods.

Delisting of Gould’s Turkey in NM Provides New Opportunities for Hunters

As the 2023 spring turkey season in New Mexico approaches, hunters in the state can look forward to new hunting opportunities thanks in large part to years of conservation efforts to benefit the Gould’s wild turkey.

Last year’s delisting of the Gould’s wild turkey subspecies from the threatened and endangered species list in New Mexico was a significant achievement in conservation. After being on the list since 1974, the subspecies’ delisting demonstrates successful conservation management and preservation of the turkey population in the state.

Following a thorough assessment of the 2017 Gould’s recovery plan in New Mexico, the previously threatened subspecies has been successfully removed from the list. The decision was reached unanimously by the New Mexico State Game Commission, based on careful examination of habitat concerns, future habitat availability and management objectives outlined in the plan. One of the primary objectives was to maintain a population of 175 Gould’s wild turkeys; however, the numbers have consistently remained above that goal, with approximately 225 turkeys recorded over the past four years. It is worth noting that the counts exclude the populations of Gould’s turkeys that reside on private property, which are not included in the official count or management objectives.

For hunters, this restoration of Gould’s in New Mexico presents a rare opportunity to hunt for the subspecies. In the past, the New Mexico Game Commission issued only two conservation (enhancement) tags for Gould’s turkey, intended to generate maximum conservation funding for Gould’s conservation through raffles and auctions.

However, with the successful delisting of Gould’s turkeys, the state offered four additional once-in-a-lifetime public draw tags for hunting during the 2023 spring season (in hunt units 26-27), from May 1 to May 31. While the chances of drawing a tag for this hunt were relatively low (deadline to apply was Feb. 15), officials may adjust tag numbers in the future based on population responses to the newly added hunting pressure.

TENNESSEE WATERS BENEFIT FROM IMPROVEMENTS MADE FOR NEW “BILL DANCE SIGNATURE LAKES” INITIATIVE

America’s Most-Loved Fisherman Bill Dance to Appear at 2023 Bassmaster Classic in Knoxville

Anglers will see major improvements across Tennessee lakes this spring as part of the new Bill Dance Signature Lakes initiative, just as thousands make their trek to Knoxville for the annual Bassmaster Classic beginning March 24. Often dubbed the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing,” the Classic brings anglers to Knoxville for the second time since 2019. Visitors can stop by the “Bill Dance Signature Lakes” booth at the Expo on Saturday, March 25 between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. for a chance to meet and greet the legendary fisherman, Bill Dance, who serves as the inspiration behind the Signature Lakes program.

Since the program was announced in December 2021, much work has taken place under the water in participating lakes, including the stocking of 935,000 fish in small lakes and 8.4 million fish in large reservoirs. Additional efforts are underway to improve habitat and fisheries management, as well as improved access for fishing and boating with new boat ramps, expanded parking, courtesy docks and fishing piers.

Bill Dance Signature Lakes is a collaborative effort between Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee State Parks and Tennessee Department of Tourist Development to improve and enhance Tennessee Lakes, increase visitation and honor Dance’s legacy. The multi-agency partnership has committed more than $15 million to improvements — both above and below the water — at lakes bearing Tennessee icon Bill Dance’s stamp of approval.

Work at 14 lakes across Tennessee since 2020 includes:

Outlast, Outrun, and Outfish The Competition with Lithium Pros’ ® M31150-S 12.8V Lithium Ion Engine Starting Battery

When the competition heats up, and the fish are biting, the last thing a pro angler needs to worry about is whether or not their marine starting battery has enough power to last the day. Lithium Pros delivers tournament fishermen peace of mind with the power they can rely on all day. The new M31150-S 12V 150 Ah marine starting battery gives anglers all the juice they need on the water.

With an impressive 1500 Marine Crank Amps (eq), the M31150-S has the highest cranking power of any other battery in its class and will have no trouble starting all conventional outboard engines on the market. Just one of Lithium Pros’ M31150-S lithium-ion batteries holds as much power as two traditional 12V Group 31 AGM lead-acid batteries at just ¼ the weight and at ½ the space!

The M31150-S features one of the most advanced, fully-integrated, digital internal battery management systems in the marine industry, safely housed in a lightweight box. This system continually monitors for over-temperature, over-current, under-current, and short-circuits. This automatically protects the battery from damage if any issues are detected, ensuring long battery life and trouble-free service.

Powered by high-power lithium-ion phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry and using only the best lithium-ion cells, you will not find more capacity in a battery that fits inside a standard Group 31 case. Featuring a whopping 360 minutes of reserve capacity, the M31150-S is designed for the competitive angler who refuses to compromise on reliability, power, or battery life. It is the starting battery Lithium Pros recommends for fresh and saltwater tournament fishing, and especially for those anglers who need to simultaneously run multiple 12 in. graphs and forward-facing sonar. Since it holds a higher voltage at discharge than traditional lead-acid batteries, fishermen no longer need to worry about their graphs resetting during an engine crank. Stay on track–and on the fish– all day long!

The M31150-S lithium-ion battery provides up to five times more cycle life with 80% DoD and recharges five times faster than traditional lead-acid batteries. Charging is easy and convenient since it can be used with any existing 12V AGM and gel battery-compatible charger, including those from Mercury*, Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha. And, since lithium-ion batteries don’t contain toxic chemicals or emit harmful gasses, they’re a better choice for the environment.

Big Horn Armory Mourns the Loss of its Friend, John Linebaugh

John Linebaugh, 67, of Clark, Wyoming, passed away on March 19, 2023.

Big Horn Armory (BHA), makers of big-bore firearms, is saddened by the recent loss of its dear friend and industry legend, John Linebaugh. Linebaugh passed away on March 19, 2023, at his home. A fellow Wyomingite, Linebaugh was an American gunsmith who gained international renown for creating custom revolvers in the largest calibers in the world. He invented the .500 Linebaugh caliber — the first successful .50 caliber revolver (and cartridge) in 1986. He is also credited with inventing the .475 Linebaugh cartridge, which he perfected in 1988.

“John was a pioneer in the use of big bore, heavy bullets in handguns. He predates Smith & Wesson’s 500 S&W by almost 20 years. They probably would not have created the X Frame guns without his inspiration,” commented Greg Buchel, president of Big Horn Armory.

He continued, “his handguns were near perfection. The first time I fired one of his guns many years ago was at a range event he and I both attended. He handed me his gun out of his holster. The first thing I noticed was how perfect the fit and function were. It wasn’t necessarily the prettiest gun I ever saw, but even after years of use and who knows how many rounds it fired, the gun was mechanical jewelry.”

The friendship between BHA and Linebaugh began at the Wyoming Outdoorsman Annual fundraiser several years ago when Linebaugh approached Buchel at his table. After chatting for a while, the idea for a collaboration was born. The idea was discussed several times in the following months, and one night over a couple of bourbons, the two decided to produce a limited edition, super-premium boxed set containing one 500 Linebaugh lever gun and one 500 Linebaugh revolver. Included would be exhibition-grade wood, octagon barrels, and color case hardened receivers all packaged in an oak presentation box.

SAF SCHOLAR TO TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS THURSDAY ABOUT ATF ABUSES

BELLEVUE, WA – When the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability convenes Thursday to discuss alleged abuses by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), one of the people offering testimony will be attorney Matthew Larosiere, who serves as an adjunct scholar of law and policy for the Second Amendment Foundation.

The hearing may be watched here, beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT) / 7 a.m. (PDT) Thursday. It is headlined, “ATF’s Assault on the Second Amendment: When is Enough Enough?”

“We’re proud to have Matt offering insight to the House committee,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Under Joe Biden, the ATF has been weaponized against law-abiding citizens, and his new budget proposal includes $1.9 billion for the agency to expand operations and increase regulation of the firearms industry.”

Larosiere will offer testimony regarding the threat ATF’s overreach poses to the American people. He will also focus on the ATF’s dramatic change in policy about pistol stabilizing braces, owned by countless law-abiding citizens including many disabled military veterans who have suddenly found themselves facing possible legal action for owning a shooting accessory, which is not a firearm, that the agency previously said was perfectly acceptable.

“ATF has been known for its institutional abuse of power throughout history,” said SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “Now, more than ever, the agency is being weaponized as a means to punish peaceable gun owners and drive small businesses out of the marketplace by inventing creative statutory interpretations surpassing the agency’s authority and scrutinizing federal firearms licensees every actions in a ‘gotcha’ manner.

PinUltimate Quick-Release Hitch Pin: The Revolutionary New Solution

If you are a trailer owner, you are probably familiar with the hassle of using hitch pins. The steel rods are not only prone to rusting, but they also require clumsy “R-clips” that nobody likes. This often results in a knuckle-scraping experience that nobody wants to repeat.

However, there is now a solution to this problem: the PinUltimate Quick-Release Hitch Pin. It is an all-titanium pin that makes securing and removing your hitch faster and more comfortable than ever before.

How does it work?

The PinUltimate pin uses a clever ConnecTrick push-button, quick-release, in-line design that is so much better than the traditional hitch pins. You simply depress the ergonomically positioned thumb button on PinUltimate’s handle. This releases positive locking balls that protrude from the shaft, releasing the cap on the opposite end. With the cap removed, the pin is free to slide in or out. To re-attach the cap, just depress the thumb button and push the cap back in place.

All this happens in mere seconds and is done easily in tight quarters, far easier than R-clips that work perpendicular to the pin shaft, requiring more space to operate.

What is it made of?

The PinUltimate pin itself is made of premium, heat-treated 6AL4V (Ti-64) titanium. This means you can be confident that it will work flawlessly even if exposed to saltwater or road salt. It is backed by a lifetime warranty. The handle is ergonomically designed and fully CNC-machined from aircraft-grade billet aluminum and then treated with a special UV resistant “power red” Cerakote® finish formulated specifically for PinUltimate to further protect it from the elements.
