SK Customs® Brings History Alive Through Collectible Series, The Gods of Egypt

SK Customs®, the Nation’s only series driven, limited edition manufacturer of custom firearms, is bringing the history of ancient Egypt alive through its launch of a brand-new series, the Gods of Egypt. Debuting with the Anubis, this limited-edition production of only 200 custom Smith & Wesson 1911 Engravers Seriesrepresents one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

Thousands of years ago, hungry jackals would dig up shallow desert graves in ancient Egypt. To the Egyptians, this was a fate worse than death itself. As the god of cemeteries, embalming and the protection of graves, Anubis played an important role in the journey to the afterlife. The jackal-headed deity resided over the care of the dead and loved ones of the Egyptians.

“The Anubis is nothing short of a work of art, depicting the fascinating history and culture of the ancient Egyptians,” said Simon Khiabani, owner and founder of SK Customs. “We’re in the business of crafting one-of-a-kind collectibles accentuating historical events, influential leaders, rituals, cultures and more. The Anubis is the perfect gun to commence the Gods of Egypt series.”

The S&W 1911 is chambered in 45ACP. Each side of the firearm features Egyptian hieroglyphics working towards the muzzle. The right side illustrates Anubis engraved in 24k gold, while the left side depicts Anubis performing mummification of the deceased. The rear panels symbolize key Egyptian concepts, truth and justice, with a scale weighing a heart against a feather. The top of the slide is engraved with the hieroglyphic Ankh symbol, meaning “life.”

A Uniquely Custom 24k gold pyramid decorates the front sight, while the serrations are deeply etched with a lotus flower representing creation and rebirth. Each grip panel is designed to represent Anubis and the rich history of the ancient Egyptians.

Engelmeier Memoire: Part 3

Inspired by the many adventures he experienced as a member of the Air Force Pistol Marksmanship Team back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dr. Robert “Doc” Engelmeier from Pittsburgh, Pa., created his own exposé. Documenting his excursions, including to Camp Perry, he goes into remarkable detail about being a competitor during that time period, the awards he accumulated and the friends he made along the way. The CMP will be posting the piece through a series on our online publication, The First Shot, featuring fascinating commentary and vintage photos for readers to enjoy.

This is the third installment of the series.

Travis Air Force Base 1989:

My duty assignment during the 1988 and 1989 seasons was at Travis AFB in Northern California. I was very fortunate there to have Colonel Stan Wellins as my commander. He was proud to have an Air Force National competitor in his unit and was very supportive of my efforts with the Team.

He graciously allowed me time off for major competitions. That enabled me to utilize TDY funds for transportation and lodging. Otherwise, I would have had to use my annual leave and personal funds to cover all my expenses.

A Beginner’s Guide to Gun Safety

Owning a gun is a right of passage for many people. They keep you safe and offer a way to relieve stress for people who spend time on the shooting range.

However, owning a good is a big responsibility. With gun deaths as high as they are, it’s on you not to contribute to increasing those numbers.

Before you decide to purchase a gun, you must understand gun safety and how to do it right. Read the guide below to learn how to stay safe with firearms.

Treat Guns As if They Are Loaded

Many people take it easy once they unload their guns. They point it at others because they feel safe. But doing this is a big mistake.

You never know what can go wrong when you point a gun at others. This leads to accidental firings and people getting hurt. Treat your gun as if it’s always loaded, and never point it at something you don’t want to shoot.

Ohio Local Marks 50th Straight National Matches Appearance

Since 1907, the National Rifle & Pistol Matches have been a staple event on the historic grounds of Camp Perry in Ohio. Attracting visitors from across the nation (and even across the world), the event has become a revered marksmanship tradition – so much so that many have made it an annual excursion that has spanned across their lifetimes.

Such is the case with Pat Smith, 69, of Tiffin, Ohio, who competed in his 50th National Trophy Individual (NTI) Rifle Match during the 2022 National Matches.

“It’s just something we do, so we keep doing it,” Pat said of the event.

The NTI is one of the most celebrated competitions of the National Matches. The overall competitor is awarded the Daniel Boone Trophy – a historic honor that dates back to 1904. With a course of fire of 200, 300 and 600 yards, the NTI joins some of the best marksmen and women in the country on the range with those who aspire to be, along with others who enter simply for the experience.

Pat began competing at Camp Perry in 1972 and has never stopped (seen here in the early 1980s).

Pat lives less than an hour from Camp Perry, headquarters of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which directs and hosts the National Matches. He first arrived in 1972 with members of the local Tiffin Gun Club who decided to fire in the NTI event.

Nomad Outdoors Killin’ Time Turkey Vests Are a Necessary Addition for All Turkey Hunters This Season

Nomad’s Killin’ Time Turkey Vest is blazing the trail with innovative and purposeful features that provide turkey hunters with a convenient and result-driven system to maximize their chance at success throughout the season.

The Killin’ Time Turkey Vest will undoubtedly be on every turkey-hunting fanatic’s wish list this spring. Offering twenty-eight general and specialized pockets, the Killin’ Time Turkey Vest provides an unlimited amount of close-kept, quiet, and secure storage for a hunt. The keen eyesight of turkeys requires stealth to be successful in the turkey woods, and a lot of gear needs to stay close for easy access and less movement.  The storage pocket design offers tactical placement to provide hunters with effortless access to their gear. There are specialized pockets for a Thermacell® to help ward off warm weather insects, a specific external vertical long box call storage pocket with a chalk pouch and locator sleeve, and mesh storage pockets for four mouth calls. Additional storage in the rear of the vest supplies an adjustable game pouch and space for decoys and accessories, including a specific spot for decoy stakes.

The Killin’ Time Turkey Vest prepares hunters for any scenario the turkey woods have to offer. Some turkey hunts require a run-and-gun style setup to chase after the sounds of a Tom firing off a loud gobble back to a call at first light. On other days a hunter can tuck in on the edge of the field under a tree while the long beard comes in on a string. No matter the situation, the Killin’ Time Turkey Vest provides a convenient setup. The removable stadium seat with magnet attachments allows hunters to quickly remove or reattach their seat cushions when moving about on a hunt. In addition to the convenience, the seat is composed of high-density foam to give hunters comfort and support while they wait. The dual water bottle pockets enhance a hunter’s comfort in the woods, as their hydration won’t suffer during the chase. But that’s not all. Picking morel mushrooms is a favorite addition to many turkey hunts, and this vest provides a stow-away mesh sack just for the occasion.

The Nomad Killin’ Time Turkey Vest is an all-encompassing and versatile hunting tool available in two Mossy Oak® patterns — Bottomland® or Shadow Leaf®.  Both camo patterns have been proven effective and resulted in successful turkey hunts throughout the nation.

Henry Repeating Arms Issues Recall Notice for Certain Lever Action .45-70 Rifles

Henry Repeating Arms recently discovered a safety issue affecting certain lever action .45-70 Gov’t rifles manufactured between December 14, 2022, and January 11, 2023. Henry is voluntarily initiating a recall to protect the safety of its customers because, under certain conditions, it is possible that some of these rifles may unintentionally discharge without the trigger being pulled if the hammer is released or dropped from the cocked position. To prevent the possibility of death or serious personal injury, owners of a Henry Repeating Arms lever action .45-70 should discontinue all use until it is determined whether or not the rifle is subject to recall.

Any Henry Repeating Arms firearm obtained before December 2022 is not subject to this recall, and no action is needed.

To determine if a Henry .45-70 lever action rifle is affected, owners should look up the serial number of their firearm at henryusa.com/recall, email [email protected], or call toll-free 1-866-200-2354 (M-F, 9 am ET-5 pm ET).

The safety issue leading to this voluntary recall was discovered internally during test firing and is related to firing pins that may not meet specifications. Henry Repeating Arms is ready to replace the firing pins free of charge in the order by which the firearms are received. Information on the current turnaround time for rifles returned under this recall will be provided at henryusa.com/recall. Henry Repeating Arms will make every effort to minimize the turnaround time. Additionally, as a sign of appreciation to its customers, Henry Repeating Arms will send any customer with a rifle affected by this recall a $50 gift card for HenryPride.com upon completion of service.

PICKING THE RIGHT FISHING PLIERS

UNMATCHED POWER AND PRECISION WITH SMITH’S CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Picking the right fishing plier might be a more complicated task than it appears at first glance. In today’s market, with so many different options, sporting different features and materials help complicate this seemingly easy task.

The first question you should ask yourself is, what is my budget? Where are you going to use these pliers? And finally, what are the features you need to accomplish your fishing goals?

There is such a diverse selection of pliers that it can be an interesting decision. It’s very easy to end up owning quite a few sets of pliers and switch them up based on what tasks you’re doing, where you’ll be fishing, and what your needs for any trip might be.

If you’re one of those anglers that don’t enjoy just one type of fishing, this question gets way more interesting. One day might, you might be fishing offshore for tuna and other pelagics, the next day chasing bass and stripers from a kayak, the next stalking shallow flats for redfish, or even a summer foray into a mountain meadow to fly fish for trout. Each one of these scenarios really can call for a very different fishing plier.

Senate Bill Would Conserve Corridors, Habitat in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains

Ruby Mountains Protection Act would conserve 340,000-plus acres home to mule deer, sage grouse, Lahontan cutthroat trout

WASHINGTON – More than 340,000 acres of public lands and waters in northeast Nevada’s Ruby Mountains would be conserved under legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate today.

The Ruby Mountains Protection Act would prohibit oil and gas leasing on more than 300,000 acres of the Ruby Mountains subdistrict of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and nearly 40,000 acres of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The region provides a critical migratory corridor for the state’s largest mule deer herd, sage grouse habitat, and robust fisheries including Lahontan cutthroat trout, the Nevada state fish. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) reintroduced the bill in the 118th Congress. It passed out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in the 117th Congress with bipartisan support.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, which now has supported the legislation across three Congresses, highlighted its importance to Nevada’s fish, wildlife and public lands and waters.

“We thank Sen. Cortez Masto for her leadership on reintroducing the Ruby Mountains Protection Act, which would withdraw nearly 350,000 acres of public land from oil and gas leasing, removing the threat of habitat fragmentation while maintaining multiple use,” said Bryce Pollock, BHA Nevada chapter policy co-chair. “Sportsmen and women applaud this legislation that would conserve critical habitat in the migratory corridor for Nevada’s largest mule deer herd as well as streams and lakes populated by Lahontan cutthroat trout.”
