Jared Halbert Takes First Place, Teammate Ehea Schuerch Takes Second

Halbert took home first place in the Men’s Elite Division while fellow teammate Schuerch placed second in the Women’s Elite Division.

Following his most recent win at the Tactical Games South Carolina match in the team event, Halbert returned to the podium as the winner of the Men’s Elite Division. Throughout the competition, Halbert ran a full suite of Blackhawk gear, including a T-Series® holster, Foundation Series Tac Nylon plate carrier and belt. 

“Utah was very hot, and the smaller footprint of the Foundation Series Plate Carrier helped keep me comfortable,” Halbert said. “I was able to win both the action shooting stages during the match by having a holster that allows for quick draws and a sling that is fast to manipulate, which helps when tenths of a second matter. Several times I was also able to stow rifle magazines in the cummerbund of my plate carrier instead of in the very back of my belt, which allowed me to place my pistol pouches in more advantageous positions.”

Teammate Ehea Schuerch fought through injury and a fierce field of competitors to take second place in the Women’s Elite division.

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — Join the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for a celebration of the NWTF’s 50-year Anniversary and the restoration of the wild turkey in the Land of 10,000 Lakes on July 22 in Caledonia (where wild turkeys were first reintroduced in Minnesota in the 1970s).

“We are beyond excited to gather all of our partners, volunteers and major donors from across the state to celebrate one of America’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories, both across the nation and here in Minnesota,” said Tom Glines, NWTF director of development. “We are going to pack 50 years of excitement and fun into one action-packed day in Caledonia. We hope you can join us!” 

Outdoor industry brands, MNDNR, Minnesota’s hunter-conservationists and NWTF chapters from across the state will gather in Caledonia’s North Park At 2 p.m. to dedicate three bronze cairns that will commemorate the incredible restoration of the wild turkey in Minnesota and all of those who made it possible.

The event will kick off with a welcome address from Caledonia Mayor Dwayne “Tank” Schroeder, a member of the NWTF Houston County Chapter since the chapter’s inception in 1984.

NWTF Minnesota State Chapter President Linden Anderson will also address the crowd and discuss the restoration efforts that he was directly involved in during the ’80s and ’90s.

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The Trigg County Longspurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its 2023 JAKES Day June 10, hosted at the Harper Farm in Cadiz, Kentucky.

JAKES, or Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship, is a program specifically designed to inform, educate, and engage youth 17 and younger in wildlife conservation and the responsible management of our natural resources.

Approximately 30 JAKES members attended the event and participated in a range of activities, including outdoor skills instruction, games, prize giveaways and a cookout lunch.

JAKES members took part in BB gun shooting, .22 rifle shooting, archery, fishing and skeet shooting. Additionally, instructors held a gun safety class that included proper shooting instruction for all participants, including parents.

During the event, Longspurs Chapter President Ben Harper took the opportunity to deliver a special presentation on behalf of the chapter to J.D. Williams, the founder of Mohawk Outdoors. The mission of Mohawk Outdoors is to support veterans in their healing process by integrating outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, camping and survival activities into their lives. To contribute to this cause, the Trigg County Longspurs donated $1,500 to Mohawk Outdoors to assist in funding hunting trips for veterans.

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — On June 12, the Arizona Senate recognized the National Wild Turkey Federation for its 50th Anniversary, commending the organization for its achievements in conservation and successful mission delivery throughout the state.

The Arizona Senate read the proclamation, congratulating the NWTF on five decades of conservation commitment, during its session at the Arizona State Senate office. Members of the NWTF Arizona State Chapter’s board of directors attended the reading to express their support for the proclamation.

“The National Wild Turkey Federation and the Arizona State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation are grateful for the recognition of 50 years of partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and everything that we have accomplished together for the wild turkey and conservation in this state,” said Roy Crain, NWTF Arizona State Chapter president.

The resolution reads:

“… WHEREAS, the National Wild Turkey Federation has spent over $750,000 to aid in the reintroduction and continuing research of the Gould’s turkey in Arizona; and

The Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match (Daisy Nationals) brings teams of youth ages 8 to 15 from around the country to the Rogers Convention Center to compete for the National Championship of BB Gun Shooting. This 5-meter, 4-position NRA-sanctioned match is in it’s 56th year of competition and crowns Individual and Team National Champions.

Teams consist of five shooters and two alternates. These teams have practiced and competed all year for the chance to qualify for the Daisy Nationals and must place in the top three positions in a state match to get an invitation. In the match, competitors shoot at an official target placed at 5-meters. They shoot 10 shots in the Standing, 10 in the Sitting, 10 in the Kneeling and 10 in the Prone shooting positions. All competitors shoot a Daisy Model 499B, touted as the most-accurate 5-meter BB gun in the world.

Each shot is worth 10 points, for a total of 400 possible, but each competitor must also take a test that covers gun safety and general gun/match knowledge. The test is worth 100 points, so each competitor is shooting for 500 points. Proof that these kids are good comes from last year’s Individual National Champion Zoe Dissing. She set a new record with a score of 494 – just six points from perfect.

But it’s not just the competition that makes the Daisy Nationals a hit with youth. Events and fun make these three days all about the kids. There are costume and car decorating contests sponsored by Academy Sports & Outdoors, Barter Bar (an evening of trading items brought from their area) and a night at the Rogers Aquatic Center.

As usual, teams are coming from as far away as Oregon to compete, and South Dakota, Virginia and Georgia are also among the states represented. This year 15 states will be represented. Any organization can start a BB Team, but most come from the 4-H Shooting Sports program. New teams must complete a 10-hour Daisy Shooting Sports Curriculum before ever picking up a BB gun.

Attorneys representing the Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a challenge of a ban on so-called “assault weapons” by Cook County, Ill., today filed a 16-page brief supporting their earlier motion for summary judgment in the case, which is known as Viramontes v. Cook County.

The case is being adjudicated in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. It was originally filed in August 2021. Joining SAF in this case are the Firearms Policy Coalition and three private citizens, all Cook County residents. They are Rubi Joyal, Christopher Khaya and Cutberto Viramontes, for whom the case is named. They are represented by attorneys David Sigale of Wheaton, Ill., and David H. Thompson, Peter A. Patterson and William V. Bergstrom, all with Cooper & Kirk in Washington, D.C.

According to today’s reply brief, “In seeking to justify its ban on common semiautomatic rifles, the County proposes a faulty analysis for this case, conflating the textual and historical inquiries required by Bruen and then proposing to justify its ban by comparison to historical fire safety regulations governing gunpowder storage.”

“Cook County seems determined to obfuscate this case by making arguments which do not pass the constitutional smell test,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “The county contends the AR-15 and similar firearms are not appropriate for self-defense, which is simply nonsense. It’s not up to the county to determine what types of firearms are appropriate for personal protection. That’s for the citizens to decide.”

“The County’s arguments as to why its ban on so-called ‘assault weapons’ should be upheld fail to meet their burden,” said SAF’s Executive Director Adam Kraut. “None of the arguments advanced to support the ban demonstrate any consistency with this nation’s history and tradition. We look forward to vindicating the rights of our plaintiffs in this, and many other cases on this topic.”

Spring Hill, TN — More than 250 youth had the chance to wet a line and catch some fish at the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s (USA) free Take Kids Fishing Day community events held in four different cities across Wisconsin during the state’s Free Fishing Weekend. 

To entice newcomers to give the sport a try, Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend allows people to go fishing without having to purchase a license. Likewise, the Take Kids Fishing Day events, hosted by local union volunteers through the USA’s Work Boots on the Ground program, are designed to introduce young people to the sport of fishing and nurture an interest in outdoor activities, at no cost to parents or guardians. 

On Saturday, June 3, the Building Trades Council (BTC) of South Central Wisconsin, Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO and the Western Wisconsin Building Trades Council along with the Greater West Central Area Labor Council held fishing events in Madison, La Crosse and Eau Claire, respectively. In addition, the BTC of South Central Wisconsin hosted an event in Beloit on Sunday June 4. 

At Carson Park in Eau Claire 20 budding anglers, mentored by 10 union volunteers from Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 434, Ironworkers Local 512 and IBEW Locals 14 and 955, spent a few hours learning how to bait hooks, cast lines and catch bluegills from the park’s small lake. Afterward they and their families were treated to a picnic lunch of grilled hotdogs and brats. 

Union volunteers have been holding Take Kids Fishing Day events in Eau Claire for nine years, according to Greg Erickson, Plumbers Local 434 Business Agent and event organizer. “It’s all about getting kids outdoors and teaching basic fishing skills that they can use for the rest of their lives,” he says. 

The Women’s Outdoor Media Association (WOMA), known for encouraging women in the outdoor endeavors of shooting sports, archery, fishing, and hunting, proudly announces a new WOMA logo and branding to coincide with their renewed commitment to promoting their efforts via social and mass media.
