DNR Reveals Season Outlook For Fall Wild Turkey, Ruffed Grouse And Woodcock Seasons

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the season outlook for ruffed grouse, woodcock and wild turkey, plus essential updates for hunters to be in the know ahead of the Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 season openers.

The DNR provides hunters with free online mapping tools to identify habitat types and public land open to hunting upland game birds. The online Fields and Forest Lands Interactive Gamebird Hunting Tool provides upland gamebird hunters with an interactive way to locate cover suitable for ruffed grouse and woodcock, managed dove fields and properties stocked with game farm pheasants. On the go, hunters can use the DNR’s free Hunt Wild Wisconsin mobile app.

Ruffed Grouse

The ruffed grouse season is open in Zone A Sept. 18 – Jan. 9, 2022. This earlier closure than previous years follows the DNR’s 10-year ruffed grouse management plan. In Zone B, the season is open Oct. 16 – Dec. 8.

Statewide drumming survey results indicated a decrease of 6% in breeding grouse compared to 2019. Surveys were not completed in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency. In Wisconsin, the 10-year ruffed grouse population cycle typically peaks in years that end in 0, 9 or 1. This likely indicates we are entering the typical “down-phase” of the 10-year cycle.

Douglas Spale Appointed to Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s National Board of Directors

Kansas City attorney and avid uplander brings new expertise to 15-member board

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are pleased to announce the appointment of Douglas Spale of Kansas City, Missouri, to its National Board of Directors. Spale, a federal attorney and avid bird hunter who devotes multiple weeks each fall in pursuit of upland birds and waterfowl, joins a 15-member board which meets quarterly and oversees the operations of Pheasants Forever, Inc. and Quail Forever.

A native of Nebraska, Spale’s passion for conservation is linked to his upbringing and a father who preached respect for nature, its peoples, and gundogs. Delivering on a promise made to his father after college graduation, Spale embarked on a mission to develop a gundog with the prowess to hunt the storied Great Plains Region where he was born and raised. His journey is documented in Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s Bird Dog in the City blog series, describing how training a bird dog in an urban setting (Chicago) provides a unique set of circumstances, and a whole lot of satisfaction. In addition to Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s digital channels and magazines, Spale’s dog training articles have also been published in GearJunkie.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to serve members and the upland hunting community as the newest appointee to Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s National Board of Directors,” stated Douglas Spale. “I aspire to travel the world, but for now, I am devoted to exploring the country with my Labradors in an effort to promote the beauty of the outdoors, including the wonderful work of The Habitat Organization.”

Spale graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law before starting his career as an associate attorney for the law firm of Peterson, Johnson & Murray in Chicago, Illinois. More recently, his professional path took an unexpected yet welcomed turn westward after accepting a position as a real estate and land use attorney for the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Spale is a member of Pheasants Forever and a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, and he also holds membership status with the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Cook County Bar Association, and the Chicago Bar Association.

EOTECH® G43 & G45 Magnifiers Enhance Any Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS)

Target detection, identification and precise engagement are essential in fast-moving scenarios where operators transition from close to mid-range targets. EOTECH Magnifiers enhance any EOTECH Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS) by enlarging the target’s image when needed. EOTECH’s G43 and G45 magnifiers pair perfectly with any EOTECH HWS, transforming them into flexible CQC to medium-range weapon sight systems.

The magnifiers include a Switch-to-Side magnifier mount with a locking, adjustable, quick-detach lever. When mounted, the magnifier snaps into place behind the HWS when needed and out of the way when not required. Its ambidextrous design switches either to the right or left to accommodate the shooter’s preference. Both magnifiers feature tool-free vertical and horizontal adjustments for simple reticle centering. An adjustable diopter quickly focuses the magnifier to suit the user’s eyes.

“The biggest advantage the magnifiers offer with a Holographic Weapon Sight is that the dot size doesn’t change when viewed with magnification” said Mark Miller, Product Manager for EOTECH. “The target enlarges, but the dot remains 1MOA providing greater accuracy. This is different from red dots because their dots will grow in size at the same rate as the target, so no additional precision is gained.”

Both the G43 and G45 magnifiers have similar specifications; the biggest difference is their magnification. The G43 is a 3X magnifier, while the G45 is a 5X. The G45’s additional 2X magnification allows precise aiming at greater distances. The G43, at 3X, offers a slightly wider field-of-view than the G45 for better situational awareness at mid-range distances. Choosing the best magnifier comes down to the shooter’s preference.

EOTECH designs and builds rugged, reliable, and innovative products for rigorous field use. The G43 and G45 inherit the battle-proven features of the EOTECH G33 magnifier. The G43 Magnifier is one of the most compact, lightweight magnifiers today. These magnifiers are impervious to the elements and work in a wide range of temperatures. Both are well-suited to any operational environment, from the jungles and deserts to the mountains and arctic.

Firearms as a Necessity in Newest SilencerCo “American Gun” Episode

SilencerCo’s newly released “American Gun” episode spotlights a farmer from the small town of Ville Platte, Louisiana. In a campaign intended to prove the diversity of gun owners, “American Gun: The Farmer,” launched on September 15, 2021, reveals a unique point of view from someone who has been surrounded by firearms his entire life.

Chase grew up working on the family farm and continues to run that same farm today. Firearms are an everyday necessity in order to maintain crops and run off pests. From overpopulating turtles that become a nuisance to raccoons that damage carefully placed crawfish traps, Chase requires a gun in order to make a living. This is a concept that many are unfamiliar with in the modern era.

“Gun owners being portrayed in the media is kind of a weird feeling [to me] because you never saw it “Gun owners being portrayed in the media is kind of a weird feeling [to me] because you never saw it growing up here,” said Chase. “It’s getting to be a difficult thing being a gun owner today. We are starting to be viewed as something different than we were back then.”

The “American Gun” series sets out to uncover different points of view surrounding firearms to contrast against what is commonly portrayed in the media. Contrary to the violence and hatred that is represented, there are a variety of important reasons why Americans exercise their second amendment right. For Chase, it was a tradition to grow up hunting, recreational shooting and controlling varmints with a firearm.

“American Gun” videos will be released on a monthly basis and can be found on the SilencerCo YouTube and social media channels. For more information on the “American Gun” campaign, click here

Union Sportsmen Introduce Minnesota Youths to the Shooting Sports, Firearms Safety & Conservation

Union Sportsmen’s Alliance hosts 9th Annual Get Youth Outdoors Day in Clear Lake, Minn.

Spring Hill, Tenn. —Nearly 30 youths learned about firearms safety, conservation, and the union trades while experiencing the thrill of the shooting sports firsthand Sunday, Sept. 12 during the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) 9th Annual Get Youth Outdoors Day at Wild Marsh Sporting Clays in Clear Lake, Minnesota.

The event was part of Work Boots on the Ground, the USA’s flagship conservation program, and a series of community outreach events that aim to instill the next generation with an appreciation and passion for the outdoors.

Volunteers representing the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Trades, Roofers Local 96, Bricklayers Local 1, Iron Workers Local 512, and Central Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council provided safety instruction, educational demonstrations, and hands-on introductions to sporting clays, rimfire rifles, archery, and casting.

“The Roofers are enormously proud to be part of the Twin Cities Get Youth Outdoors Day that began in 2012 and paved the way for similar USA outreach events across the U.S.,” said United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers International President Kinsey Robinson. “The kids are instructed on the importance of conservation and the crucial role unions play in restoring habitat. The smile on the kids’ faces when they break clays or watch their arrows hit their targets leaves no doubt that we are igniting their interest in the outdoors to help preserve America’s outdoor heritage.”

U.S. Senate Approves California Drift Gillnet Modernization Legislation

Sportfishing industry resumes work to phase out destructive gear in California

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate approved by unanimous consent the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act, which aims to align state and federal policy to support the modernization of California’s swordfish fishery. The California drift gillnet fishery is the last remaining fishery in the country using this type of gear, which are a mile long and indiscriminately catch anything in their path.

“The recreational fishing industry is grateful to Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.) for their continued leadership toward ridding U.S. federal waters of large mesh drift gillnets,” said Danielle Cloutier, Pacific Fisheries Policy director for the American Sportfishing Association (ASA). “The support for this bill from the entire U.S. Senate demonstrates the widespread recognition that this gear has no place in our oceans.”

The justification for eliminating large mesh drift gillnets has grown as alternative gear known as deep set buoy gear has been studied and authorized for use. Deep set buoy gear more effectively targets swordfish with minimal bycatch. During the 2020-2021 fishing season, only 3% of the total California drift gillnet catch was swordfish (160 swordfish), compared to deep set buoy gear catch that was 92% swordfish (1,257 swordfish).

The Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act would phase out the use of highly wasteful large mesh drift gillnets and assist commercial fishermen in transitioning toward the more sustainable and economically viable deep set buoy gear.

Millennium Marine Rod Tree and Rod Pod

Trolling multiple rods is not a passive game. The old adage, “Trolling is not a relaxing activity,” certainly holds true when running multiple rods and driving the boat. The key to proper lure presentation and the avoidance of tangles is to use a rod holder system that permits precise planer board placement, even in rough water. The Millennium Marine Spyderlok Rod Tree allows fishermen to meticulously run up to three rods on each side of the boat in an exact pattern without fear of constant tangles.

The Millennium Marine Spyderlok Rod Tree is made from anodized, low-glare finish aluminum with stainless steel hardware, making it impervious to saltwater corrosion. The unique patented Spyderlok technology ensures precise, secure locking angles and infinite adjustment and alignment. Oversized tubes facilitate quick rod removal, and a durable rubber boot protects rod handles. The tubes have a specialized ridge in the bottom that prevents the rod from turning. The Spyderlok Rod Tree swivels 360 degrees and 180 degrees vertically and mounts to either the R-101 base plate or TS series track system. No tools are necessary.

The Spyderlok Rod Pod uses the same low-glare finish anodized aluminum and an oversized tube as the Spyderlok Rod Tree. The Rod Pod adjusts 360 degrees and 180 degrees vertically. These are built to quickly add or remove the Rod Pod with two knobs. No tool required. It easily mounts to either the R-101 or TS series track system. The Rod Pod allows anglers to clear space or refine presentations.

By utilizing the Spyderlok Rod Tree and Rod Pod in conjunction with planer boards, anglers can cover more water and put their offerings in front of more fish with unparalleled precision and ease. One-year warranty. MSRP for the Spyderlok Rod Tree is $209.99, and the Spyderlok Rod Pod is $96.99.
