Remington has announced a licensing partnership with Smokey Mountain Knife Works (SMKW) to develop and distribute the 2021 Remington Bullet Knife, “Prospector”. Originally introduced in 1922, the Remington Bullet Knife series is widely known and sought after by Remington fans, knife enthusiasts and collectors alike.

“This knife has it all: nostalgia, functionality and quality,” said Danny Evans, Remington’s Director of Licensed Products. “SMKW has a longstanding relationship with Remington in licensed products. It was a natural fit to build on our partnership with SMKW and their long tradition with the Bullet Knife series.”

In 2021 Remington Ammunition continues to define a new era for such a heralded brand and the Remington Bullet Knife is another example of just how far Big Green has come. This Remington “Prospector” Bullet Knife is hand-crafted and finished to the highest quality standards by trained craftsmen. “The most important fact about the Bullet Knife is that it has always been USA made,” said SMKW Founder Kevin Pipes. “We partner with the finest knife craftsman in the country to produce our knives, including Great Eastern Cutlery who is making this year’s Bullet Knife. The overwhelmingly positive comments attest to the knife’s quality and collectability. You can’t go wrong making an investment in “The Prospector.”

NEW for 2021: Big&J® BB2™ Now in Apple Flavor

In order to survive and reproduce, whitetails must take in more energy than they expend. They accomplish this by seeking out food that offers the greatest nutritional benefit and finding areas where nutritious food is in the greatest supply in the smallest area. That’s why Apple BB2 is such an important one-stop source of nutrition. It is specifically formulated to meet the deer’s dietary and energy needs by using an optimal dose of digestible fiber and just enough starch to maximize digestion. Apple BB2 contains 110 percent of the energy value of corn with a minimum of 18 percent protein. Known as TDN (total digestible nutrition), the granular blend allows a deer to obtain the highest nutrition possible.

But first, they have to find it. Whitetails locate food primarily by smell. Like the original, Apple BB2 is such an effective attractant because its powerful scent can draw deer from far away. It is so strong that even humans can smell it as they approach a site with Apple BB2 present. With a much more powerful sense of smell, deer are able to detect it from hundreds of yards away, even with the mildest drafts.

Deer know what’s good for them, which is why they seek out preferred foods that offer the most nutrition, and one of their favorite foods is apples. By adding apples’ irresistible scent, Big&J made their original BB2 even more attractive, and from farther away.

The best way to attract and hold more deer on your land is by providing for their needs. The more food and habitat available, the more comfortable they’ll be, and the longer they’ll stay. Big&J’s flagship attractant-BB2 has a proven track record for attracting big bucks, giving hunters who use it an advantage over their quarry by providing more close encounters and sure, ethical shots. A new apple flavor offers an even more powerful attraction.

Create bait sites, where legal, before the start of hunting season in areas that provide good airflow to disperse the scent generated by Apple BB2. This will give the deer time to discover the sites and adjust travel and feeding patterns accordingly. Set up trail cameras to monitor the number of deer, size of bucks and time of day they visit each site. Then build your opening day hunting strategy around the BB2 location that provides the best chance of encountering that giant buck.

Rigby launches pioneering new Dagga Boy Award to aid scientific study of mature African buffalo bulls

London gunmaker John Rigby & Co. is calling on hunters around the world to take part in its new Dagga Boy Award, which will in turn aid a new scientific study initiative providing invaluable data about the populations of African buffalo across the continent.

Designed to gather scientific data whilst highlighting the importance that a buffalo’s age is more important than its ‘inches’, the bi-annual award promotes ethical hunting and a healthier, stronger population of all six species of African buffalo.

Only bulls which have surpassed breeding age and are wild and free-ranging from self-sustaining herds, hunted in an ethical, fair chase, track, walk-and-stalk manner are eligible for entry. To take part, hunters are requested to email a detailed description of a hunt as well as photos of qualifying bulls they have taken in the past 10 years up to the end of the 2021 hunting season.

For the first time ever and with Rigby at the forefront, this initiative will enable leading buffalo scientists to compare first molar tooth wear with signs of aging for all species of buffalo from all over the African continent and determine at what age other species of buffalo, from other parts of Africa, attain Dagga Boy status. The information collected will ensure more sustainable hunting and the betterment of the species overall.

The panel of judges is made up of Rigby’s managing director Marc Newton, Dr. Kevin Robertson and legendary PH Robin Hurt. The winner will receive the Dagga Boy Cup and a Rigby .416 Big Game rifle worth £9,150. The Professional Hunter that guided will also receive a Rigby .450 PH rifle worth £8,340. The award will be announced at a cocktail reception to be held in Dallas during the 2022 Dallas Safari Club Convention. All qualifying entrants to the inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Award, will be invited to the reception.

Humphries spoke to the crowd of outdoors media and hunting and fishing industry partners on the importance of diversifying the face of the outdoors.

“For us to be more sustainable, we have to be more diverse,” Humphries said.

Humphries began her speech highlighting some of America’s most iconic conservationists — Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, Aldo Leopold and Gifford Pinchot, among many other figureheads.

There are icons of conservation, however, that are often overlooked in the greater conservation story, Humphries noted. The CEO brought to light the crucial role women played as Americans began working to conserve and restore its natural resources and forests.

Real Avid Introduces Bore-Max™ Speed Clean System™

Real Avid, the leader in DIY for Guns®, presents the Bore-Max Speed Clean System, a line of brushes, jags and patches innovatively designed as a significantly faster way to clean a bore with less effort. With the Speed Jag and Speed Jag Patch, expect the same results as pushing four or more traditional square patches in only one pass through the bore.

Bore-Max Speed Brushes – 2X More Crud Scrubbed

With twice the bristle density of standard brushes, Bore-Max Speed Brushes delivers over 2X the scrubbing power to the bore with each pass. The stiff and durable nickel-plated phosphor bronze bristles resist chemical breakdown in the bore to extend the life of the brush.

“In order to achieve maximize effectiveness, we found there needed to be an optimal balance between bristle density and bristle flexibility. In our testing, we recognized very quickly that having too few bristles was a waste of time and too many wouldn’t provide enough flexibility to navigate the lands and grooves of the bore,” commented Howard Tripp, Chief Innovation Officer. The bristle configuration of the Bore-Max Speed Brush is the result of finding that sweet spot, achieving maximum scrubbing density while retaining enough flexibility to effectively reach down into the lands and grooves, removing more carbon with each pass of the brush and getting maximum results faster.

In regard to nickel-plating, Tripp said, “Phosphor bronze has proven to be an ideal bristle material, with the exception of reacting poorly to bore-solvent. Nickel Electroplating these brushes solved that problem and increased their useful longevity as well.”

Bows and Crossbows: What To Take On The Hunt

The earliest use of the crossbow originated around 400 BC, according to most historians, making it one of the world’s oldest projectile weapons. Archery itself – or more specifically, the use of the standard bow – predates the crossbow by at least 10,000 years. Interestingly, the crossbow did not make the bow obsolete, despite its seemingly more advanced structure. This article explores the differences between the two projectile weapons, why archery survived the invention of the crossbow, and some of the basics about handling each.

The difference between bows and crossbows

The visual differences between the tools might be obvious at first glance, but their use differs in more ways than just ‘one is vertical and the other is horizontal’. A bow’s mechanics are a matter of simple resistance, where the bowstring is pulled to a point where the forward momentum from the bow itself gathers “compression force”. When the archer lets go of the arrow, this force propels the arrow forward. The accuracy of the shot depends on the archer’s hand-eye coordination as much as strength, balance, and skill.

Crossbows use the same principle, except the compression force isn’t held by the archer’s hand, but a lever attached to a trigger. The design of a crossbow allows its bolts and quarrels (words for crossbow arrows) to stay ‘knocked’ once they are drawn. Rather than releasing the bolt by hand, the operator uses a trigger. This principle lessens the strain of holding the drawn projectile, which requires strength and endurance, and is presumed to lower accuracy. The design also means less skill is required to use a crossbow, so unlike a bow, anyone who can learn to aim a firearm can use it with some success.

Hunting with a bow versus hunting with a crossbow

ZEISS DTI 3/25 – The New Thermal Imaging Camera from ZEISS

ZEISS Introduces Additional Thermal Imaging Camera for Hunting with Enlarged Field of View

ZEISS is proud to announce the release of the ZEISS DTI 3/25, its second thermal imaging camera developed especially for hunting. With a focal length of 25 mm, it offers an enlarged field of view of 26 meters at a range of 100 meters and thus a decisive advantage when hunting in wooded areas or at the bait site at night. “With the addition of the ZEISS DTI 3/25, we are expanding our product range to include another thermal imaging camera that provides a complete overview in total darkness, especially at close range,” says Tammo Lüken, Head of Category Management Hunting at ZEISS.

A Complete Overview – Whether Hunting from a High Seat or at the Bait Site

The ZEISS DTI 3/25 owes its impressive optical performance to the fact that the sensor, electronics, screen, and eyepiece are all designed to be perfectly compatible. “Maintaining an overview is critical when hunting in forested areas, especially in the dark, as it is more difficult to spot game. The distances at which game can be spotted are much shorter than in open terrain,” explaines Lüken. Thanks to the ZEISS DTI 3/25’s enlarged field of view and high-resolution HD-LCOS display, hunters are able to reliably detect all of the heat sources, even at close range, and obtain a complete overview, whether they are hunting from a high seat or at the bait site. “At the same time, quickly switching from maximum overview to higher magnification is easily possible using the digital zoom with increments of 0.5x,” Lüken reports.

Easier Operation with the ErgoControl Concept

In order to stay completely silent and fully attentive to the game during night hunting, it must be possible to operate the thermal imaging camera in a natural and ergonomic way. The triangular button layout and the specific arrangement of the buttons allow the controls to be identified quickly and accurately, even in the dark and with gloves on in cold conditions. The ZEISS DTI 3 family thus offers simplified and intuitive operation that helps both right-handed and left-handed hunters hunt successfully.

Integration into the ZEISS Hunting App and Firmware

The ZEISS DTI 3/35 and the new ZEISS DTI 3/25 thermal imaging cameras can be connected to the ZEISS Hunting app via Wi-Fi to manage and share photos and videos as well as livestream hunting experiences. The latest firmware is already installed and unlocks additional features such as improved focusing thanks to contrast enhancement (Contrast Boost) and a focus frame in picture-in-picture mode. These innovations are complemented by an LED screen that can be switched off manually for optimized camouflage as well as an extended battery life of 10 hours.

Waterfowl Hunters: Wear Your Life Jackets

Make Life Jackets #1 On Your Hunting Packing List

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding waterfowl hunters to follow best safety practices as they hit the water this upcoming season.

Wisconsin has had 20 boating accident deaths so far this year, according to DNR records. More than 74,000 waterfowl hunters are expected on waterways this year, which begins with the youth hunt on Sept. 18.

It’s important for hunters to follow these safety tips to prevent boating accidents and deaths:

Be aware that water temperatures are rapidly cooling at this time of year. A fall overboard can turn dangerous quickly as hypothermia sets in. Wearing a life jacket can keep individuals on the surface and allow energy to be used to keep warm rather than to stay above the water.Remember to protect canine companions on the water – they need life jackets, too.Never overload the boat. If hunting on a large river or lake, use a boat that is big enough to handle rough water.Balance the boat evenly and keep weight low for stability.Be on the lookout for elements outside of your control, such as changing weather, or a slightly submerged stump, rock, sandbar or floating debris. If in a boat or canoe with a hunting partner, establish and communicate a safe fire zone; do not stand to shoot if a partner is shooting from a seated position.Always carry a cellphone so communication can happen in case of an emergency.

“Waterfowl hunters should keep in mind that hunting dogs can get excited and start jumping all over the boat, increasing the risk for capsizing. Hunting boats also tend to be smaller and less stable than average boats,” said Lt. Darren Kuhn, DNR Boating Safety Administrator. “This can be a recipe for trouble, so waterfowl hunters should always wear their life jackets.”

TenPoint Continues to Lead in Crossbow Safetyand Instruction

Mogadore, OH. TenPoint Crossbow Technologies may be the foremost manufacturer of innovative, made-in-the-USA crossbows and accessories, but the technology behind the speed, power, and unmatched accuracy never comes at the expense of safety.

TenPoint and Wicked Ridge crossbows are the safest on the market, boasting an unmatched combination of safety features. In fact, TenPoint has pioneered many of today’s safety features that have become standard on crossbows – including the Dry-Fire-Inhibitor and safety wings which help keep the shooter’s hand safely below the flight deck and out of the string path while shooting.

Most recently, upon listening to consumer feedback and recognizing the need for a safe way to de-cock a crossbow, TenPoint launched the only safe de-cocking system on the market with the ACUSlide Silent Cocking and Safe De-Cocking system.

The revolutionary ACUslide cocking and de-cocking system allows the hunter to silently cock the crossbow with a mere 5-pounds of force. In the event they don’t take a shot during the hunt, they can then safely de-cock the crossbow by simply backwinding the handle, and unlike other de-cocking systems on the market, stop at any point without the fear of damage, injury, or losing control.

“Crossbow hunting continues to grow in popularity, which brings forth a wide range of experience levels in the woods,” said Keith Arnold, National Sales Manager. “With these changes, it is our responsibility to continue to manufacture safe products and we are proud to lead in the safety category as hunters head to the woods this fall.”

Boone and Crockett Club Statement on FWS Decision to Initiate Status Review of Gray Wolves

The Boone and Crockett Club is cautiously hopeful that today’s decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reanalyze the status of the wolf under the Endangered Species Act will put science ahead of politics.

“Today’s announcement by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service could provoke more controversy, but we hope all concerned can come to agree that wolf conservation and management should remain under the scientific management of state wildlife agencies,” commented Boone and Crockett Club chief executive officer, Tony Schoonen.

Since 2002 when the gray wolf was first proposed for state management, the status of the wolf under the Endangered Species Act has been analyzed repeatedly, always resulting in the same conclusion: the gray wolf in North America is not in need of the protections of the ESA.

The FWS decision today satisfies the legal requirement to reply to petitions on ESA status within 90 days. The finding is on the preliminary question of whether the petitions contain substantial information warranting further analysis.

CMP’s Matt Carroll Named Alabama 4-H Volunteer of the Year

The Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Matt Carroll, programs logistic manager and education specialist, has been chosen as one of Alabama’s 4-H Volunteers of the Year for 2021 for his commitment to 4-H youth in the local community, region and state – “Making the Best Better,” as the committee stated.

Carroll was selected as the winner of the East Central Alabama region of Calhoun County, where CMP South Headquarters are located. For his accomplishment, he will be invited to a 4-H Volunteer of the Year Banquet at the Alabama 4-H Center for recipients, their families and local 4-H agents in November.

Outside of his own 4-H duties, he trains others to become volunteers throughout the year.

“It’s nice to be recognized, but I really just have fun teaching the kids safety and marksmanship,” Carroll said modestly of his achievement.

Carroll has been a certified volunteer and club leader for the last 12 years. He’s also an Alabama 4-H S.A.F.E. Rifle Instructor (a youth development education program that emphasizes peer mentoring and positive interactions between youth and adults). Carroll works mainly in Calhoun County with the Hawkeyes 4-H rifle team. He’s a state level 2 trainer in rifle and holds around three classes a year to certify new volunteers in the discipline. He’s also involved with the State 4-H Rifle and Pistol Championships and with organizing Alabama’s Buckmasters 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational.

For 14 years, Carroll has helped coordinate events for youth and adults involved with the CMP.

For the last 14 years, Carroll has been an employee at CMP South, working with programs within the South Competition Center and the Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama. He has been instrumental in coordinating many events for youth and adults like the monthly .22 rimfire sporter rifle match at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park and air gun events at the CMP South Competition Center. Now, as programs logistic manager and education specialist, he helps lead education and training by traveling to regional and national events – providing up-to-date knowledge of current marksmanship rules, regulations and standards.
