Bristol Bay, Alaska, Home to World’s Largest Wild Salmon Fishery, Could Be Permanently Protected

EPA decision announced today could utilize the Clean Water Act to ensure the region’s long-term conservation

WASHINGTON – The fish- and wildlife-rich region of Bristol Bay, Alaska, could receive long-term protection from industrial mining in the wake of a decision made public today by the Biden administration.

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it is reinitiating the process of utilizing the Clean Water Act to protect specific areas in Bristol Bay, home to the world’s largest remaining wild salmon fishery. For over a decade, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has been working to conserve Bristol Bay, joining the diverse roster of voices advocating for the region, which supports robust recreational, subsistence and commercial fisheries as well as undisturbed habitat for moose, caribou, grizzly bear, black bear and large populations of migratory waterfowl.

“Hunters and anglers are united,” said BHA President and CEO Land Tawney. “Regardless of age, background or political persuasion, we agree that the Bristol Bay region is an irreplaceable landscape that should remain free from industrial development – forever.”

Today’s announcement from the Biden EPA follows actions undertaken by the Trump administration, which worked to slow development of the Pebble Mine, a gold and copper mining project proposed for Bristol Bay, by requiring the Pebble Partnership to develop strategies for mitigating the project’s adverse impacts on fish and wildlife habitat. Today’s EPA action takes a critical next step, as the Trump administration decision is being appealed by Pebble Partnership.

ElimiShield HUNT Hair and Body Wash was specifically crafted for both genders and all hair types of hunters while recognizing the need to be clean and scent-free. The high-quality formula will not damage color treated hair but is powerful enough to clean the dirtiest of area. It will remove all odor and odor-causing compounds from skin, hair, and nails.

ElimiShield HUNT Scent Elimination Spray eliminates odors on equipment and clothing as it bonds to all types of fabrics, rubber, metal, and other surfaces to continually kill odor-causing compounds for long-lasting odor protection. ElimiShield HUNT Scent Elimination Spray’s proprietary formula combines a unique “one-two-punch” approach to scent control for hunters’ clothing and gear. First, existing malodors are neutralized at the source. This action is rapid and thorough. Second, human body odor is controlled before it ever forms by mechanically killing odor-causing compounds via electrically charged, microscopic carbon molecules (Carbon 5150 Molecule) that pierce the membranes of odor-causing elements. This design is far superior to other products on the market that merely attempt to absorb human body odor after it has already formed. Once the Elimishield HUNT solution dries on a surface, it forms a long-lasting bond. Commonly used in hospitals and health clinics, Elimishield brings a clinical approach to the hunting industry for odor control.

ElimiShield’s Core Body Foam is to control odor formed on the human body. It is the industry’s first FDA-compliant, direct-to-skin scent control. This product utilizes a proprietary nanotechnology that kills more than 99.99 percent of odor-causing bacteria at the cellular level. ElimiShield HUNT Core Body Foam is designed to be used before going out into the field, providing all-day protection from odor-causing bacteria with a single application. ElimiShield HUNT Core Body Foam is powerful enough to eliminate odor-causing bacteria yet is gentle on skin with an alcohol-free formula.

Pelican Furthers Its Sustainability Goals with International Bird Rescue Partnership

Company releases rehabilitated pelican back into the wild

Pelican Products, Inc. the global leader in the design and manufacture of high performance protective cases and rugged gear for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts, recently joined representatives of International Bird Rescue (IBR) to release a Brown Pelican into its natural habitat. The Brown Pelican was found in late June with nearly fatal damage to her mandible.

“It was an honor to be involved with this release and witness to the expert care provided by the International Bird Rescue team,” said Phil Gyori, Chief Executive Officer of Pelican. “Our ongoing partnership with IBR reflects our commitment to fostering relationships with organizations that protect our planet and that connect with the customers we serve.”

The Brown Pelican’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable, given her care journey. She required extensive care by IBR veterinarians, including two surgical procedures. Yet in just seven weeks, the pelican was healthy and able to be released.

IBR began in 1971 when 800,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the San Francisco Bay and concerned individuals, led by a registered nurse, rescued and rehabilitated 300 water birds. The organization continues to pave the way where there is none by setting standards of care for oiled water birds, partnering to create global response teams and conducting research that improves wildlife crisis response. IBR treats approximately 4,500 wildlife annually and has responded to more than 230 spills across six continents with the support of 31,000 volunteers.

Suitable Ammunition for your Survival Guns

Are you looking for good-quality ammo for your survival guns? Here are some options you can consider.

Whenever you are faced with a life-or-death situation, having a gun in hand will not only ensure your safety but also the safety of the ones surrounding you. However, having a gun is only half of the story; having the correct kind of ammo is also important. If by chance you made the mistake of buying ammunition that’s not suited for your gun, it’ll make the process of reloading your gun difficult. That will provide no help with your situation.

Reloading ammo swiftly and effectively in a survival scenario is crucial, which is why you should always be mindful of the kind of ammunition you choose. If you are confused about your options, then don’t worry. I’ve shortlisted a few types of ammo that are great for your survival guns.

Things to Consider When Buying Survival Weapons and Ammunition

Walking into a firearm store can be intimidating, especially when there are so many guns and ammo to choose from. Luckily for you, you already know what purpose your firearm is supposed to serve.

You have to remember two things when you’re buying a survival gun or ammo.

Both the gun and its ammo should be lightweight. Movies and games make guns look almost weightless; I speak from personal experience. It wasn’t until I handled a real rifle (from a police officer who was nice enough to indulge my curiosity) that I realized how heavy they were.

In a survival situation, you most likely will be on the run, and you can’t have your weapons slow you down. Therefore, be mindful of the weight.

Love Fishing? Here is How to Find the Top Fishing Spots

Fishing is a hobby enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s also one of the most popular hobbies in America, with over 18 million anglers taking part each year. But what if you’re new to fishing?  How can you find the best fishing spot for your needs? The answer lies not only in your location but also in how much time and money you have to spend on this activity. In this article, we’ll explore some ways to find the perfect spot for any budget or schedule!

1. The Different Types Of Fishing Spots You Can Choose From

There are many different types of fishing spots for people looking to fish. This is because there are so many different factors to account for. Picking the perfect fishing spot can depend on what type of fishing you like (shore, boat, etc.). For example, here are some different types of fishing spots:

The Shore

An easy spot to find, but it’s not always the best place to go because shorelines can be inhabited by sharks and other predators.

Moving Water

Lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. These areas will have aquatic insects, which are an excellent source of fish.

Standing Water

Includes ponds and small lakes with little or no movement of the water. These areas will have fish that like to eat insects, so be careful of using bait with a lot of visible fibers (like corn) because it will float, and the fish can see it easily.

DU Conserve Films: California Grasslands

In California Grasslands, DU Conserve Films travels to California’s San Joaquin Valley, home to thousands of migrating Pacific Flyway waterfowl. The San Joaquin Valley is also where DU partners with state and federal organizations to conserve California’s historic grasslands habitat.

“Working together is a key for the grasslands,” said Matt Kaminski, DU regional biologist for the San Joaquin Valley, Southern California and Arizona. “It’s not about just working on public land, it’s not about just working on private land, it’s working together. It’s not about property lines. These wetlands all function together. DU works on everybody’s land preserving habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.”

Water is always a big factor in California wetlands conservation, and strict regulations on water usage are the norm. Times are tough throughout California’s Central Valley with drought conditions further tightening water-control measures.

DU will continue working hard throughout the Pacific Flyway and all North America to ensure a bright future for waterfowl and clean water benefiting wildlife and people. Along with our incredible state and federal partners, DU is committed to waterfowl and wetlands conservation, no matter the conditions.

“The only way we are going to be successful, and the way Ducks Unlimited has always been successful, is through partnerships,” said Anne Hansen, DU senior director of development in Northern California and Hawaii. “We are grounded in science and excellent public policy work, but it’s the partnerships on the ground that really make the conservation happen.”

EPA announces reinstatement of Clean Water Act protections for Bristol Bay, Alaska watershed

Following Ninth Circuit ruling in favor of Trout Unlimited, EPA moves to vacate unlawful 2019 decision to withdraw the Proposed Determination for Bristol Bay and reinstate longstanding proposed protections.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it would move to  vacate its 2019 decision to withdraw proposed protections for Bristol Bay and reinstate the agency’s earlier 2014 Proposed Determination. These proposed protections would limit the amount of waste water and mine waste discharge that could be released in to Waters of the United States in the Bristol Bay region. The announcement comes in the wake of a lawsuit brought by Trout Unlimited against the withdrawal decision and recent ruling in favor of TU by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. TU looks forward to working with the EPA to finalize these protections, which are critical to protecting Bristol Bay’s world-class fisheries.

“This is a smart and significant step toward putting more durable safeguards in place for Bristol Bay’s fish, clean water, communities and businesses,” said Nelli Williams, Alaska director for Trout Unlimited. “This is an important layer of protection that makes it much more difficult for the Pebble Partnership, or any other companies in the future, to mine the Pebble ore deposit. Now is the time to get these much-needed protections across the finish line, and we look forward to working with EPA and Congress to get it done. Let’s put the Pebble mine proposal in the review mirror for good so we can focus on a bright, prosperous and fish-filled future for Bristol Bay.”

“Today’s announcement by the EPA represents a victory for common sense. Blocking industrial-scale mining from Bristol Bay is the right thing to do for the Alaska Native Peoples who have depended on the fishery for millennia,” said Chris Wood, president and CEO of Trout Unlimited. “It is the right thing to do for the 17,000 family wage jobs that the $1.6 billion commercial fishery provides. It is the right thing to for a place that provides half of all of the world’s wild sockeye salmon. Congratulations to the EPA for making the right call and to the thousands of people who fought tirelessly to protect Bristol Bay.”

In 2019, the EPA under the previous administration moved to withdraw the 2014 Proposed Determination for Bristol Bay—a sudden decision based on politics, not the robust scientific record demonstrating the potential for unacceptable adverse effects. Trout Unlimited sued, challenging the EPA’‘s decision as arbitrary and capricious and contrary to the Clean Water Act’s governing standard. In July 2021, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of TU, finding that the EPA could withdraw a proposed determination only if the discharge of materials would be unlikely to have an “unacceptable adverse effect.” Today’s decision by the EPA recognizes that the agency could not meet, that stringent standard, and fully vindicates TU’s legal challenge. TU looks forward to vigorous engagement in the 404(c)  process to ensure that strong and lasting protections are established for Bristol Bay.

CMP, Military Teams Conduct Variety of Educational Courses at the 2021 National Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – The National Matches at Camp Perry has been a staple in the marksmanship world for over 100 years. The event attracts thousands of guests each year to the historic ranges of the Ohio National Guard Training Facility, with such prestigious competitions as the President’s Match, National Trophy Individual and many others that competitors have come to expect over the years.

What some may not realize is that there are also plenty of opportunities for learning while attending the National Matches – on and off the firing lines. The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which conducts the Matches each year, offers an entire lineup of educational courses for those new to the sport and those eager to develop their skills. The types of rifle and pistol courses span from junior to adult, competitive to maintenance and everything in between.

The Range Officer Training Course is led by CMP’s education, training and marketing manager, Steve Cooper.

“We held a number of classes for both pistol and rifle to accommodate folks’ schedules this year, and they were great,” said Steve Cooper, CMP training & education manager.

Along with classes offered solely by the CMP, other courses are partnered with military entities that recruit some of the best shots in the country to lead instruction on the range.

The Small Arms Firing School includes one-on-one training by current military team members.

“The Marine Corps junior clinic, guided by Maj. Martinez (USMC Shooting Team Officer In Charge), is always a big hit with our up-and-coming young rifle shooters,” Cooper explained. “It was great to see so many enthusiastic young people, who revere the Marine Corps Shooting Team, come out and take advantage of the instruction at this year’s clinic.”

The Dyrt Maps Out the Ultimate 2021 Fall Foliage Camping Road Trip

The Dyrt has created the Ultimate 2021 Fall Foliage Camping Road Trip that will be sure to inspire the adventurer, camper and leaf-peeper in all of us. Curating the best leaf-viewing content submitted by its vast camper community, as well as using foliage prediction mapping, The Dyrt has created a two-month, 12-state journey — with plenty of stop-overs — that starts in Wyoming and heads due east to New England and south to Virginia.

“Fall is the perfect season for camping. Temperatures are dropping and the leaves are popping,” says Kevin Long, CEO of The Dyrt. “Foliage is a multi-billion-dollar industry, but it seems like it’s over before you know it every year. So we used The Dyrt PRO Trip Planner to map out the road trip of a lifetime where people can stay at incredible campgrounds during peak foliage for almost two months straight!”

Extreme weather has made predicting the timing of the color changes a bit trickier than usual. Jim Salge, foliage reporter for  Yankee magazine, says foliage in the Mountain West will be short and sweet, but it could be a great year for aspens. The Dyrt picked Aspen Glen Campground in Colorado as the second stop on the trip. One of the October destinations is the North South Lake Campground in New York’s Catskill Mountains. Salge says “foliage in New York state, especially the Catskills, should be timely, bright, and beautiful.”

Not able to embark on the trip of a lifetime right now? That’s understandable. Either way, this trip highlights 11 campgrounds that are the essence of autumn in America. If there’s one near you, make plans to get out to see the yellows, reds and oranges splashed across nature’s canvas.

MidwayUSA Foundation Hosts Online Donation Drive

Columbia, MO –Throughout the month of September, any donation made to a youth shooting team through MidwayUSA Foundation’s website qualifies that team for their Online Donation Drive.  MidwayUSA Foundation’s Online Donation Drive allows a donor’s dollar to go further because there are $200,000 available to match contributions this month.  In addition, participating youth shooting teams have the chance to win additional endowment dollars. The top five donation-earning teams will win, awarding $8,000 to the first-place team.  Participating teams not in the running to earn a top-five placement are entered in a random draw for the chance to win $1,000.  Twelve teams will be drawn, creating 17 winners, total.

“Providing unique incentives, like our Online Donation Drive, for teams in our program not only helps increase their endowment balance but it also offers a chance for some healthy competition,” said Sarah Hall, MidwayUSA Foundation Southwest Program Manager.  She continued, “Because one simple donation right through our website enters a team, asking for community support can be an easy thing for every athlete to do.  Plus, these donations are tax-deductible!”

Every youth shooting team that has an endowment at the MidwayUSA Foundation has a team page on the MidwayUSA Foundation website ( https://www.midwayusafoundation.org/find-team-fund-team/ ).  These team pages provide overall endowment funding details, team contact information, and even lists donors.  Most importantly, every unique page allows a donor to make donations directly to their favorite youth shooting team.  Approximately 2,800 youth shooting teams across the nation have a funded endowment and this online donation capability. 100% of the donation, as well as the match, benefits the team. The Foundation removes nothing for operations.  MidwayUSA Foundation’s current Online Donation Drive runs from September 1 to September 30, with the next chance for increased matching dollars on Giving Tuesday (November 30).

The MidwayUSA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity working to sustain and grow the shooting sports industry by providing long-term funding to youth shooting teams through annual cash grants. Every donation made is tax-deductible and allows the Foundation to assist in expanding and enhancing the leadership skills, confidence, and discipline of today’s youth through shooting sports activities. Recreational Fishing Industry Launches Its First Online Auction

The auction features “Best of Category” winners from the ICAST 2021 New Product Showcase in support of Keep America Fishing

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) is excited to announce its inaugural online auction to support Keep America Fishing. Keep America Fishing is the association’s grassroots advocacy program that gives our nation’s 55 million anglers a way to let their voices be heard when fisheries policy and management decisions will impact recreational fishing.

“Keep America Fishing plays a critical role in connecting anglers with their local and national leaders to help ensure we have clean water, abundant fisheries and access to both,” said ASA President Glenn Hughes. “The website and the email campaigns promote the efforts of ASA’s Government Affairs team who work so diligently to support the industry, its anglers and conservation.”

The inaugural online auction opens at noon, ET, on Thursday, September 16, and ends at 8:00 p.m., ET, on Sunday, September 19. The auction will “go live” at noon with links available on the  ASAICAST and Keep America Fishing websites.

Access is also available through ASA’s social media on FacebookTwitter and LinkedIn; ICAST social media on  FacebookInstagram  and Twitter; and Keep America Fishing’s social media on Facebook,  Instagram and Twitter.
