Mike Arnold to Sign Copies of Bringing Back the Lions at Dallas Safari Club Convention January 5-8, 2023

Noted author Mike Arnold, a Distinguished Research Professor of Genetics at the University of Georgia, will be signing copies of his groundbreaking new book, Bringing Back the Lions: International Hunters, Local Tribespeople, and the Miraculous Rescue of a Doomed Ecosystem in Mozambique, at the Dallas Safari Club Convention and Expo, from January 5-8, 2023, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, TX.

Arnold will appear in the Zambeze Delta Safari Booth #3412 with legendary African professional hunter and conservationist Mark Haldane on the following dates and times: Thursday, 1:00 pm-4:00 pm; Friday, 9:00 am-11:00 am, and 2:00pm-5:00 pm; Saturday, 9:00 am-11:00 am, 2:00 pm-5:00 pm; and Sunday, 10:00 am-1:00 pm.

Arnold’s highly acclaimed Bringing Back the Lions details how a small group of professional hunters, including Haldane, spearheaded a near-30-year effort to return a once-incredible wildlife paradise from a decimated and near-barren landscape to one of the world’s premier wildlands – the area of Mozambique known as Coutada 11. Coutada 11 is an official concession covering 2000 square kilometers (approximately 772 square miles) of some of the most diverse habitat and animal species in Africa. This area is one of the few remaining in Africa where one can still do a classical African Safari.

A life-long hunter who has traveled the globe, Arnold has published hundreds of research articles and four books on a variety of topics, including conservation biology. Publications such as Science Magazine, The New York Times, and National Public Radio continue calling Mike for interviews covering his research. Earlier this year he attended the 20th annual meeting of the African Wildlife Consultative Forum in Maputo, Mozambique, where he was honored to be able to present a copy of his book to the Honorable Carlos dos Santos, Mozambique Ambassador to the United States.

You can pick up a copy of Mike’s book at the convention, or conveniently order your own from www.Amazon.comhttps://www.barnesandnoble.com/, and other fine booksellers. For more information on Dallas Safari Club and their 2023 convention, visit https://www.biggame.org/

Extar USA Releases Adjustable Receiver Extension Option

Firearm innovator Extar USA continues to strive in American-made ways to keep shooting affordable and enjoyable. Since the release of the EP9 large-format pistol, consumers have asked for a receiver extension option when converting their large-format pistol to a short-barrel rifle (SBR).

The EP9’s unique design and proprietary features meant that while it shares the look and familiar controls of the AR-15, users didn’t yet have a way to mount one of the many great adjustable stocks already on the market for the AR-15. Further complicating the desire for an adjustable, AR-15-carbine-style receiver extension has been the BATFE threat of reclassifying certain safety devices such as stabilizing braces as only for those who are willing to pay a tax for their safety.

Now there is an option.

The EP Adjustable Receiver Extension is available for those who wish to convert their EP9 Pistol into a registered short-barreled rifle with an adjustable rifle stock. This direct replacement part gives you the ability to mount a wide range of stocks that are designed to fit on AR-15 Mil-Spec diameter receiver extensions.

Quickly and easily install this receiver extension with all tools necessary included! As a factory replacement part, this receiver extension comes with our recoil damper system already installed, so that you do not have to sacrifice the performance or safety of your firearm.

NAWCA receives record funding in OMNIBUS

Government funding legislation prioritizes conservation programs

The U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to fund the federal government, including funding for several critical conservation programs. Most notably, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) – one of DU’s highest-priority programs – received record funding at $50 million.

“Record funding for NAWCA is a home run for the nation’s most successful wetlands conservation program,” said DU CEO Adam Putnam. “DU and our partners have worked with this Congress from start to finish to ensure critical conservation programs, like NAWCA, remained a priority, and this year-end funding reflects that. We appreciate our legislator friends from both parties who recognize the immense value of conservation, and we look forward to transitioning these dollars to the landscape for the benefit of wildlife, people and our environment.”

NAWCA is a voluntary matching grant program that leverages non-federal and federal funds for wetland restoration. Since enactment in 1989, NAWCA has conserved more than 30 million acres and created an average of 7,500 new jobs annually. Every dollar spent by the federal government, on average, receives a $3 match from program partners like Ducks Unlimited. Further demonstrating the effectiveness of investments made by wetlands programs like NAWCA, the recent State of the Birds report  revealed widespread losses of birds in all habitats – except wetlands.

The legislation also includes the Charitable Conservation Easement Integrity Act, which stops the abuse of syndicated conservation easements and reserves deductions for true charitable conservation purposes. Also included were important policy provisions from the Growing Climate Solutions Act and the Sponsoring USDA Sustainability Targets in Agriculture to Incentivize Natural Solutions (SUSTAINS) Act.

Throom Richochet Free Target Review

I was recently introduced to Throom, Ricochet Free Targets by Newbold and was pleasantly surprised. I have several steel targets at my range and I was interested in the differences.  The great thing about these targets is, of course, there is no danger of splash-back or ricochet; bullets pass right through to the backstop and you can see the target move. At first, that might not seem like it is a big deal to someone who is used to shooting steel, but it opens up lots of options you might not realize. Close in Richochet free target practice is essential to becoming a better shooter.

These targets are light weight which makes them much easier to transport. Carrying around heavy steel targets is a pain and can be a lot of extra work.  Extra bonus: they stay clean!  Steel targets get covered in lead that wipes off on anything it touches in the trunk or truck bed. I have only gone to a few indoor steel shoots because of the high cost of frangible ammo but with Throom there is no need to buy that higher priced ammo.  One box of frangible is about the cost of one Throom target so these pay for themselves the first time out on the range and you can add more and more as you continue shooting.

I set up the Throom targets along with some of my steel targets, but I put the Throom targets closer than usual due to their inherent safety.  The steel (for centerfire) is for 25+ yards back, but the brilliant green colored Throom was as close as 5 yards which is great for training since most defensive uses of firearms are less than 7 yards.  I really enjoyed transitioning targets from close to far which cannot be done safely with regular steel.

I will confess, I have shot at my steel targets at a closer distance than is recommended and the AR500 steel was damaged a little with .223 and quite a bit with .308.  With Throom targets at my range, I will be able to set up targets closer than I could with steel  which will be great for newer shooters and also for more experienced shooters doing pistol and rifle work on a timer.   Newer shooters can be set up for success by shooting closer.  Throom targets increasing their hits on target while the more experienced shooters can enjoy the fast paced transition from targets that are closer than 25 yards and don’t require the more intentional, aimed-in longer range shots.

It should be noted that if you are too close to the target with a fast and/or small bullet, it could pass through without knocking it down which could make it hard for people with older eyes ( like mine) to see if it was a hit or a miss.  So I did the same thing I do with my steel: I painted the Throom.  The bright green color material is the perfect color for a high visibility indicator where it hits.  The dark spray paint comes off as the bullet passes through revealing the bright green material underneath  making it easy to see where you hit. I will continue to buy these extremely versatile targets and recommend them to friends.

MidwayUSA Foundation Has Record Giving Tuesday For Youth Shooting Sports

Columbia, MO– The public charity that helps fund thousands of youth shooting teams has recently raised over $275,000!  On November 29, MidwayUSA Foundation had a record-breaking Giving Tuesday by receiving the largest amount of donation dollars for youth shooting sports since beginning their Giving Tuesday campaigns in 2017.  Donors from all over the country made donations to youth shooting teams and organizations to make this possible. In just one day, MidwayUSA Foundation raised $275,749.10, crushing their goal of $200,000!

MidwayUSA Foundation Executive Director, G. Scott Reynolds talked about how the Foundation’s donation match and incentive dollars made an even more significant impact on youth shooting sports, “Thanks to Larry and Brenda Potterfield, we were able to add an additional $220,000 in Giving Tuesday matching and incentive dollars, contributing a grand total of $495,749.10 to youth shooting endowments here at MidwayUSA Foundation.  Growing our endowments by nearly half a million dollars will put more dollars to work in our outdoor industry.”  Close to 300 youth shooting programs received a donation on Giving Tuesday.

Youth shooting teams that participated in the fundraising event also had the chance to win additional funds to grow their respective endowment.  The teams that received the most donations on Giving Tuesday received awards ranging from $5,000 to $1,000. In addition to the top teams, all other participating teams were entered into a random draw, where ten teams were drawn to receive $500 each. Visit MidwayUSA Foundation’s blog to see the full list of winners. Top performing teams included:

1st Place, Gaston Young Guns High School Shooting Team – [NC] Winning $5,000

The Foundation keeps nothing for operations.  Many shooting sports athletes become future hunters and conservationists too.  Investing in youth shooting sports is an investment in the entire outdoor industry.
