Former Air Force Pistol Member Makes First Camp Perry Visit in 28 Years

Inspired by the many adventures he experienced as a member of the Air Force Pistol Marksmanship Team back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dr. Robert “Doc” Engelmeier from Pittsburgh, Pa., created his own exposé. Documenting his excursions, including to Camp Perry, he goes into remarkable detail about being a competitor during that time period, the awards he accumulated and the friends he made along the way. The CMP will be posting the piece through a series on our online publication, The First Shot, featuring fascinating commentary and vintage photos for readers to enjoy.

We begin with our own account of Doc’s 2022 Camp Perry trip – a return after a three-decade absence – where he made even more memories on the historic grounds.

Dr. Robert “Doc” Engelmeier from Pittsburgh, Pa., made a sentimental trip in 2022 – back to the Camp Perry National Matches in Ohio for the first time in nearly 30 years.

“We had the time and determination this year,” Doc said of the trip, having been too busy to return since 1994. “It worked out really well for us.”

Doc served a 24-year Active Duty career in the Air Force, retiring with the rank of colonel in December 1995. He also spent time in the Massachusetts Air National Guard. During his time in the military, he spent nine years as a member of the Air Force Pistol Shooting Team where he reached several notable successes, like earning Distinguished Pistol Badge #278.

New Fleece Tops Join Huk’s Environment-Friendly Waypoint Collection

Huk’s Waypoint Collection is designed to protect anglers from the cold and the oceans from discarded plastic. The latest addition to Huk’s acclaimed Waypoint Collection of outdoor wear made of recycled plastic is full-zip and half-zip fleece jackets. Outdoorsmen will keep this jacket nearby at all times.

Anglers, boaters and outdoor enthusiasts have long turned to polyester fleece for everything from comfort on a cool morning to layering in the coldest weather. It provides warmth, but its breathable construction allows perspiration to evaporate rather than trapping it on the skin. The Waypoint fleeces are great for jogging, hiking, work, school or a day around town – and they’re perfect for a cold day on the water.

Huk has partnered with REPREVE® to incorporate recycled materials into its Waypoint line to help reduce plastic pollution. The collection will have the same unique Huk style but an eco-friendly twist. On average, it takes nine recycled plastic bottles to create one item in the Waypoint collection. The blended fabric provides flexibility and stretches while maintaining shape and fit.

Huk’s fleece is made from 100% recycled polyester, as the brand builds on its commitment to help reduce plastic pollution. Using recycled polyester prevents plastic from entering the waste stream, which could end up in the oceans or other sensitive environments. It makes producing new material less necessary, conserving natural resources and avoiding emissions-creating processes.

The Waypoint Fleece FZ and Edisto Fleece FZ full-zip jackets and half-zip pullovers feature quick-drying fabric, a must for anglers who face bow spray and splashing fish at the boat. Stretch binding cuffs keep out the cold on chilly days. The zippered chest pocket nicely holds a phone, while zippered hand pockets are perfect for a quick warm-up on the run out to the water. The tall neck on both styles offers comfort on a brisk fall morning.

A Neck Spinning Addition to TRUE’s Plasma Lighter Lineup

Whether it’s smoking, survival, or being able to play the part of a Cassanova when helping light a cigarette, a lighter is paramount. Every type of lighter is useful, and TRUE has made ‘useful’ the starting point for its newest lighter. Even some people who don’t necessarily need one, still carry a fire tool in their pocket should the need arise.

Building off the success of the first TRUE Plasma Lighter, the Plasma Lighter XR brings new development and usefulness. It still boasts 300+ activations on a single charge but with some modifications. One of the more notable differences is in the XR’s single arc pattern. This simplifies the construction and offers more advancement in other areas. One of those areas is an extendable and flexible neck ignitor. The neck can be positioned in any direction for difficult combustion areas like campfires and is windproof up to 80 mph.

Rugged ABS and zinc alloy construction are designed to be durable and impact resistant. The locking cover protects the sensitive electrodes while also providing IPX6 water resistance.

One of the other changes made to the XR lineup is the UCB-C rechargeable port. The battery-operated ignition is eco-friendly and consistently reliable. A LED charge indicator is visible, so there is no guesswork when a recharge is needed. Overall, a full charge from empty is possible within 1.5 hours. TRUE also provides a 1-year warranty against all manufacturer defects.

TRUE’s updated lighter offers some unique updates to an already solid design. Capable of fitting nearly every role, the Plasma Lighter XR may become worth its weight in gold. Priced to compete with options that surpass the competition, it’s hard to overlook this powerhouse.

NWTF Expands Renowned Callmaking Contest

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — For the NWTF’s 50-year celebration in Nashville, and henceforth, the prestigious Grand National Custom Callmaking Contest will have a new Wildlife Art Division, as well as a new JAKES category, Pinfeathers, in the Turkey Hunting Division.

“We are beyond excited to broaden our Grand National Custom Callmaking Contest,” said NWTF co-CEO Jason Burckhalter. “Year after year, we are stunned by the level of talent and artistic expertise our call makers bring to the table, not to mention their generous contribution to our mission through their artistic prowess. We can’t wait to see what our collective of artists has been up to over the last year.”

The new Wildlife Art Division will consist of three categories, Carved or Carved and Painted, Two-Dimensional Art and Art/General, intentionally vague to include all artistic mediums. The Best of Show Award will provide the winner from one of the three categories with a $1,000 prize.

To engage youth in the contest, the new Pinfeathers Category will allow NWTF JAKES members (youth 17 and under) to collaborate with an adult NWTF member of their choice to create any turkey call. The youth can utilize whatever level of assistance is needed from their mentor to complete the entry. The winner of this category will receive a unique trophy with the winner’s and mentor’s names engraved together.

“When I was 5 years old, my grandfather gave me a box call,” said Bob Fulcher, dedicated NWTF volunteer and previous Grand National Call Maker of the Year recipient. “That call changed my life; it is what planted the seed and is probably why I am an NWTF volunteer, why I started turkey hunting, mentoring and making turkey calls. It is my hope that this new division sets youth on the same trajectory to become stalwart conservationists that give back.”

Why Knives Make the Best Christmas Gifts

When a knife is given as a gift, it also gives the ability to carve another gift. It offers a way to help make a fire, slice cheese, cut twine, clean a fish, and much more.

Consider the following when searching for a good Christmas EDC knife. It should be lightweight and compact for convenient carrying. It should be durable, able to withstand frequent use, and capable of cutting through various materials. Safety should be a factor; fixed-blade knives have no moving parts compared to folding knives, which take some practice and skill to master. Bear Forest Knives has the solution!

On Three EDC

Stocking stuffers are usually small, useful items that are a precursor to the more significant Christmas gift—in this case, it may be better. With an overall length of 6.5 inches, the On Three EDC knife utilizes a handy 2.75-inch blade made of 52100 carbon steel. The handle is 3.5 inches long, offering a small knife a secure grip. NEBO’s Columbo Keychain Offers Loads of Lumens at a Moment’s Notice

A reliable lighting source is the most convenient and helpful thing a person can keep on them. A dependable flashlight can be invaluable, whether on a dark and stormy night or during a power outage.

Thanks to NEBO, this does not mean carrying around a big, bulky light at all times. The Columbo Keychain Pocket Light is compact, convenient and constructed to be the everyday carry light for the person who doesn’t want to think about carrying a light with them.

The key to the Columbo Keychain Pocket Light is its simplicity and convenience. It is simply activated with an easy, one-handed twist operation.

For a keychain pocket light, simplicity is more important than having the versatility of multiple light modes seen with larger flashlights. The most common reason to use a keychain light is for brief, close-at-hand tasks that can come up unexpectedly.

The Columbo Keychain Pocket Light’s 100-lumen output offers plenty of light to illuminate the interior of a vehicle, a jogging path, or a porch, as well as individual tasks or project lighting with a beam distance of 40 meters (131 feet).

Keep True Knives Sharp With The Mycro Knife Sharpener

There are very few things as dangerous as a dull blade. Without the ability to cut uniformly, a blade is more likely to catch and shred, which can easily slip and cause unintended damage to users or items. While TRUE Knives are built to last and with materials that require a minimal need for sharpening, the need to sharpen all knives is inevitable.

TRUE releases the Mycro Knife Sharpener to combat this danger and need. This lightweight aluminum construction houses a carbine cutter suitable for all blade materials. Carbide is more than capable of handling a wide variety of stainless and high-carbon steel. A ceramic sharpener is housed opposite for more fine sharpening and honing needs. Use is very simple; 10-12 passes through the carbine sharpener and another 10-12 with the ceramic sharpener. The 40-degree angle is suitable for nearly all blade geometries.

Mycro Knife Sharpener is a minimalistic tool suitable for EDC, incorporating a lanyard hole and rubber grip. The entire construction is about the size of an average thumb surpassing the competition. The size alone means it can be carried by anyone – even on a keychain – and used anytime.

For the trades worker, outdoor enthusiast, camper, and all-around knife user, it’s worth the extra peace of mind to have the best edge at all times. The small size and dependable materials make this an excellent preparedness tool one can feel confident carrying.

THAW is the Leader in Personal Rechargeable Heating Devices

Personal winter comfort is one of the most challenging things to attain, especially on short excursions into the snow. Everyone will pack themselves tight with thermal base layers and build on top of that to stay warm. However, when people become stationary, their bodies no longer produce as much heat, which can lead to some nasty chills.

THAW has brought to market many easy-to-use products meant for personal warmth. Their lineup of rechargeable battery-operated devices heat up quickly and provide necessary warmth for short or all-day usage. THAW also understands that needed heat isn’t just restricted to the hands and feet.

When it comes to rechargeable heating devices, THAW’s Rechargeable Hand Warmers and seat pads take the cake. These hand warmers use USB-C and even double as a power bank. There are two sizes, small and large, each of which heats both sides. Additionally, their Rechargeable Heated Seat Pad offers up to 17 hours of heat when connected to a power bank. It utilizes a USB connection and can be used in a variety of seasons. These devices reinvent the traditional hand and tush warmers.

No extremity can not be forgotten, and the THAW Bluetooth enabled heated insoles provide app-controlled warming for your feet. The Rechargeable Heated Insoles are fully adjustable to keep you completely comfortable, no matter preferred temperature. Available for Android and iOS platforms, the THAW app also monitors battery life, streams weather forecasts and allows users to share devices with friends. Staying warm has never been so easy.

If electric rechargeables aren’t your preference, THAW still offers disposable air-activated warmers. This air activation provides exceptional reactive length. Often surpassing the competition, these disposable hand warmers let users move on with their daily outdoor tasks.

Is Insurance More Expensive for Leased Cars: Everything You Need to Know

You should take time to know about the way your car insurance is affected before deciding whether you need to buy a new car or lease one from the auto dealership. Auto insurance for a leased car may appear more costly than general insurance for a car as it depends on numerous factors. Our guide can help you understand the facets involved in the cost of leased insurance with the lowest car insurance prices.

How does auto insurance for a leased car work?

A few individuals may consider getting a car on lease for a long-term car rental; however, it is not the ideal analogy. You need to show the proof of insurance while leasing a car, like how you need insurance to rent one. It shows that you are getting insurance coverage and prove to bear financial responsibility in times of an accident.

It is right to consider a car lease as a model of paying for using the vehicle. If you were planning on buying a car, you would have to place money to make the initial payment and take the car on loan to repay the rest of the cost, which is how vehicle finance works.

While you lease a car, you need to pay the entire money. The third-party leasing company will buy the vehicle allowing you to use the car for a monthly price.

BHA Files Legal Brief in Federal Court Supporting ‘Corner Crossing’

Public access to adjoining public lands via corner crossing is demonstrably legal, BHA maintains

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has filed an amicus brief in a high-profile public access case that the U.S. District Court for Wyoming is expected to hear this summer. The ruling in the case, Iron Bar Holdings vs. Bradly Cape et al, could help establish the legality of a means of accessing public lands known as “corner crossing,” the act of stepping from one corner of a parcel of public land to another, potentially opening up access to millions of acres in 11 Western states.

Public lands can be inaccessible due to being “landlocked,” surrounded by private land on which there is no easement, public road or public trail. In the fall of 2021, four non-resident hunters were issued citations in Carbon County. Wyoming, for criminal trespass. The four hunters never touched private lands: They used a ladder to cross between adjoining corners of public lands managed by the BLM.

In its brief, BHA maintains that the plaintiff in this case “cannot secure for itself the value of public land interspersed with its property by threatening trespass, since the government and its licensees (the public) have an equal right to access their lands.”

As the basis for its position, BHA relies on the Unlawful Inclosures Act, passed by Congress in the late 1800s to settle the range wars erupting between cattlemen and farmers over access and use of land in the West, as well as cases interpreting that law. The UIA outlines broad prescriptions against enclosing public land, emphasizing that “no person, by force, threats, intimidation, or by any fencing or inclosing, or any other unlawful means, shall prevent or obstruct … any person from peaceably entering upon … any tract of public land … or shall prevent or obstruct free passage or transit over or through the public lands.”

Tyler Jordan Hunting Life Interview

Tyler Jordan, you have had the opportunity to grow up in the outdoor industry and a tremendous amount has changed in your lifetime.  What do you see as some of the best changes you have had the opportunity to see in regards to hunting?

One of the biggest changes I have seen is just the overall knowledge hunters have of deer and the ability to grow big deer all over the country is at its peak in my opinion. One of the key factors that changed for us in Georgia over the last 15 years is the use of trail cameras and having a better inventory of your deer herd. Getting to know deer in your area and what their patterns might be can set you up to be a more successful hunter.

How did you come to partner with HOIST? What about their product or brand are most interesting to you?

My buddy Greg Camp with Halo Waterfowl was the first person who reached out to me about trying Hoist. What HOIST has provided us over the course of this past hunting season is the ability to stay out and hunt longer. During the rut there are many times we hunt all day and this product provides us with the opportunity to stay hydrated for those long sits. Many times it was the only drink I took to the stand with me and it was all I needed to sit from daylight to dark without experiencing dehydration.

As hunters, we all have those individuals who have inspired us and mentored us and without question, we know that is your father.  What is the single most important thing you have learned from your father in regards to hunting and the outdoors?

The biggest takeaway from what my dad has taught me is to always leave things better than you found it so we can preserve what we have for generations to come. Don’t be greedy when it comes to the resources that we are all blessed to share with one another. Leave it better for the next person that comes along!

What is the single most important thing your father has taught you about business?

Passions of the business may get you started, but having a business plan and strategies is what keeps you going for the long haul. Dad has always been a forward thinker and dreamer which has taught me it’s important to be smart, set goals and follow your plan for you and your fellow co-workers to stay on the right track.

We have that one single hunt where everything went wrong and yet we still walked away with a lesson learned from the experience.  What was that hunt for you and what did you learn?

While turkey hunting I’ve been humbled a lot and that’s why it’s probably my favorite species to hunt. But when you think you’ve got those birds figured out they remind you quickly there’s still a lot to learn. When I’ve had things go wrong in turkey hunting it’s usually because I’ve pressed the issue too much on a turkey whether it’s trying to get closer or over calling. I’ve learned through the years the best thing to do sometimes is to let certain situations develop and read what their mood/behavior is at that particular moment. Don’t make rash decisions!

The world of hunting has gotten smaller over the last 40 years.  It has been stated that hunter numbers have decreased dramatically.  In your opinion, what do you think can be done to increase hunter participation among our citizens?

This kind of goes back to what my dad has taught me in that it’s our responsibility to pass this tradition on in anyway we can. On our hunting land in Georgia we try to take several close friends of ours and their family hunting for the first time just so they are exposed to it. “Take a child hunting and fishing so they too can enjoy the outdoors”. That’s the saying my dad ended every show with and the motto we all should live by with not just our own families, but others, too.

Everyone wants to know what is your gear breakdown and in your pack for archery hunts?  Rifle Hunts?

Outdoor Edge skinning knife, 2 pull up ropes, 4 different Realtree EZ Hangers, Nose Jammer spray bottle, Nose Jammer Wax Stick, wind checker, Bushnell Harness with binoculars and range finder, Bushnell headlamp, rattling horns and Bone Collector grunt call. Only thing I’d change up with my rifle hunt pack is having my Federal ammunition.

How important is planning for proper hydration when you’re out on a road trip?

Planning for proper hydration for a road trip is super important. It’s easy to think about proper hydration during hot weather days when you’re on a long stalk, or hanging treestands. But what most people don’t think about is staying hydrated during super cold weather hunts. It’s hard to make yourself drink cold fluids in below freezing temperatures because you’re doing everything you can to stay warm. Not ingest cold beverages. That’s why i like Hoist. You can drink less of it and stay properly hydrated quicker than you would with water or other sports drinks.

What’s the main difference you’ve seen in HOIST vs other hydration products you may have used to consume?

The thing i like about hoist vs other sports drinks is that it seems to take effect and hydrate me quicker than anything else. When i get my mind focused on doing something out on the farm, sometimes I don’t drink enough fluids for the task at hand. Drinking Hoist tends to help with dehydration headaches quicker than any other sports drinks that i’ve consumed in the past.

Tyler Jordan, what question do you wish someone would ask you?  What is the answer?

What is your favorite animal to hunt? I bet because of Realtree Monster Bucks you’d probably think it would be whitetail, but turkey hunting is my all-time favorite. If you’re a diehard whitetail hunter and want to get out to chase turkeys in the spring, it will make you a better outdoorsman. They present an interesting challenge and have insanely good vision, which makes your camo choice important. If you haven’t already, get out this upcoming spring and sharpen your hunting skills.
