Hunters successful in Nebraska bighorn harvest

Nebraska’s bighorn sheep hunting season ended Dec. 6 when a hunter from the eastern end of the state punched his tag, one of the two permits issued for the season.

Todd Nordeen, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission big game and disease research manager who supervises the hunting program, said each of the two rams harvested this year was a mature adult with full-curl horns. Both were harvested in the Wildcat Hills of the Panhandle.

Jerry Fischer of Denton bagged his ram on a 6-mile trek Dec. 6, his second day of hunting. He won his permit from a drawing 3,904 applicants.

The other hunter, Kevin Small, harvested his ram on his fourth day of pursuit, Dec. 2. He won his permit by auction in February during the annual banquet for the Iowa Chapter of the Foundation of North American Wild Sheep.

The sheep mark the 31st and 32nd harvested in Nebraska since the Game and Parks’ hunting program began in 1998.

Hornady Reloading Has Accessories That All Reloaders Need

For decades, reloading has been the driving force behind the Hornady name. From the single-stage Classic to the progressive Lock-N-Load AP, Custom-Grade Dies, and Hornady’s innovations to come, we’re continually putting more into reloading so you can get more out of it.

Beyond the essential equipment of a reloading press, powder measure, scale, set of dies, case lube, and a loading manual, you will find an extensive line of tools and accessories. Whether a reloading novice or a seasoned veteran who values simplicity and function, Hornady’s Reloading accessories can speed up your efforts and make the experience more enjoyable.

Reloading stations are sometimes situated in rooms and places where lighting might present strong shadows or have dimly lit areas that can impede quick safety and quality inspections. Light up your press with Hornady’s Lock-N-Load® Light Strip. The adhesive backing on the light strip lets you attach the strip anywhere. A little extra light might improve the reloading operation. The Lock-N-Load® Light Strip features long-lasting LED lights and plugs into a standard 110V outlet or Hornady’s Lock-N-Load Control Panel.

Reloaders know the frustration of funnels when they are constantly rolling off the table, and Hornady came up with an innovative design. The Basic Powder Funnel is designed with a squared-rim design that means no rolling whenever you set it on the table. The funnel fits all calibers between .22 and .45.

Hornady’s Premium Powder Funnel Kit offers high-capacity transfer through non-static aluminum. It nests into a form-fitted storage case. The kit has nine caliber-specific bushings that perfectly fit the funnel into case sizes that include: .224, .243/6mm, .257, .264/6.5mm, .277/6.8mm, .284/7mm, .308, .338 and .375.

Leica Geovid Pro 32 named Outdoor Life’s Editor’s Choice and awarded ‘Best Rangefinders for Hunting of 2022’ in annual optics test

Leica’s market leading Geovid Pro 32 10×32 rangefinding binoculars have been awarded Outdoor Life’ highly coveted ‘Editor’s Choice’ award and ‘Best Overall’ in the ‘Best Rangefinders for Hunting in 2022’ category. Now in their 18th year, the annual awards are judged by a panel of optics experts, including Outdoor Life Hunting and Conservation editor Andrew McKean.

The judges’ test was divided into objective and subjective criteria – according to 10 categories includes measuring optical resolution, low-light performance, image assessment, functionality, ergonomics, versatility, durability, and value. Objective evaluations included a resolution test and measurements of field-of-view, eye relief, and true magnification. They also ran every optic through a low-light test, measuring how deep into the twilight each product could determine detail on a black-and-white resolution target.

Judge Andrew McKean commented: “Simply the smartest, most technologically advanced rangefinding binocular we’ve tested, it has the added attributes of best-in-class glass and coatings. And it’s sized right for hunters. Lastly, we assessed the extras, including the accessories that it ships with and each submission’s warranty terms. We picked one overall winner to receive our Editor’s Choice award—this year, that goes to Leica’s ground-breaking Geovid Pro 32.”

Ryan Trenka, Marketing Director at Leica Sport Optics added: “Here at Leica, we always strive to produce the best products that make the ultimate hunting companion and we are thrilled that Geovid Pro 32 was named this year’s “Best Overall” at Outdoor Life. We are proud that such a compact bino can pack so much optical performance, field proven ballistics and innovative new technologies like ProTrack, and it’s great that it’s been recognised with this reputable award.”

Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and Delta Waterfowl Sign Memorandum of Understanding at 19th Annual NASC Sportsman-Legislator Summit

Last week, at the NASC Sportsman-Legislator Summit in Bozeman, Montana, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) and Delta Waterfowl (Delta) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). CSF, the leading advocate for sportsmen and women in the political arena, and Delta, the Duck Hunters Organization, are pleased to announce the formalization of an already successful partnership. Through entrance into this MOU, CSF and Delta will be able to create synergy and collaboration at the state, regional, and national levels between two of America’s leading sporting-conservation organizations.

“In 2022, CSF and Delta were able to achieve several legislative goals together,” said CSF President and CEO Jeff Crane. “From the historic expansion of Sunday hunting opportunities in Virginia to the passage of legislation in Kansas which created lifetime youth licenses, the work between our two organizations is already paying dividends for America’s 55 million sportsmen and women. By formally establishing our partnership we can more effectively encourage collaboration, bipartisanship, and opportunity for sportsmen and women today, and for generations to come.”

Representing an opportunity to combine the power of CSF’s policy leadership with Delta’s mission and membership, this partnership will bring together Delta’s government affairs staff with the CSF Team to facilitate collaboration and communication. This working relationship will allow Delta to connect with the Caucuses with whom CSF works closely while granting CSF the opportunity to connect and engage with Delta’s members and volunteers in support of the shared missions of the organizations.

“Delta and CSF have worked together on shared policy priorities for years,” John Devney, Chief Policy Officer for Delta Waterfowl explained. “This MOU is a formalization of that already impactful partnership and will continue to secure beneficial outcomes for ducks, duck habitat, and duck hunters in the future.”

Tigress Has Your Back At The Dock

You already trust Tigress to put more fish in the box, but now they have you covered while at berth too. Their Portable Cleats and Shore Power Cord Holder are welcome accessories at home, at the sandbar or visiting a new port.

Tigress’ shore solutions are built with the same high-quality construction and attention to detail as their world-class outriggers and tourney-winning fishing equipment, so you know they’ll stand up to life on the sea.

Few things ruin gel coat like dock rash and line chafing can. Protect your vessel by using one of Tigress’ Portable Cleats, available in both 15- and 36-inch heights to accommodate with gunnel. The innovative design uses empty rod holders to place fenders exactly where needed to keep your hull from contacting the dock or other vessels when you’re rafted up at the sandbar. Easily tie up to a friend’s boat for lunch or add extra lines when a storm approaches. The 36-inch size is ideal for transom cross ties, keeping lines from chafing your boat while adding an extra layer of security. Whatever length you choose, the full-sized 9-inch cleat positioned at a 10-degree angle is ideal for nearly any function, even as a hose holder to prevent tangles.

Keeping your shore power cord free from damage doesn’t just mean you won’t have to replace it; it is a safety concern. Ensure the cord’s outer jacket keeps moisture out by protecting it from chafing. Tigress’ Shore Power Cord Holder installs in a rod holder and keeps power lines safely above the gunnel and free of obstacles that can cause damage, whether in your home port or at a temporary berth on an extended cruise. A 15-degree bent butt accommodates the angles found in most rod holders, keeping the pole vertical and the cord moving freely. An open-top makes inserting long cords easy, with an overlap to keep them in place even when conditions turn rough. And during clean-up, you can use the Shore Power Cord Holder to wrangle a hose.

The Portable Cleats and Shore Power Cord Holder fit standard 1-5/8” rod holders, so they’re perfect for any vessel. Like all of Tigress’ products, they are built to stand up to a harsh saltwater environment so they’ll look and perform flawlessly for a lifetime.

Warmth and Comfort Doesn’t End at a Doorway: THAW’s Heated Insoles Take Comfort Outdoors

One of the greatest dangers on even relatively chilled days and nights is the risk of frostbite. Even when taking all the precautions possible, a cold body can turn a pleasant stroll into a chore. Many manufacturers have created chemical heating solutions for hands and feet, but THAW has taken it a step further.

THAW’s heated insoles are a Bluetooth-enabled and app-controlled solution to a common comfort issue. The rechargeable and flexible heated insoles are the perfect options for anyone who enjoys the outdoors or attends outdoor events. These insoles can be adjusted for any weather or environment with temperature settings ranging from 68-122 degrees F. On the lowest setting time, the batteries can last up to 6 hours or up to 2.5 hours on the highest setting.

Even with a battery and heating element, THAW produces a comfortable insert. Made with breathable foam padding and a recessed charging port, it can feel like walking on a heated cloud. The insoles come in four sizes, from small to extra-large and can be trimmed for a customized fit. The versatility doesn’t end there. A user can track battery life and stream weather forecasts on THAW’s app.

No matter what environment you call home or wish to explore, THAW brings preparation and comfort to every location.

Alaska JROTC Hosts Memorial Air Rifle Match for Former Athlete

On Nov. 18-19, 2022, 112 air rifle athletes from Anchorage, Mat-Su Valley and Fairbanks, Alaska, participated in the 2022 Jordyn Durr Memorial CMP Cup Match.

Cadet Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordyn Durr was tragically killed by a drunk driver while walking home on Aug. 9, 2013. She was a member of Robert Service High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and the school’s air rifle team.

“Her smile was infectious, and she worked hard at looking her best as a cadet,” said Jordyn’s former teacher, GySgt Tom Foust. “She found a way to balance school, teams, all while supporting unit scheduled community service and school support.”

The event was held within Robert Service High School’s gymnasium.

Foust, who now coaches Robert Service High School’s air rifle team, assembled the CMP Cup match to honor Jordyn’s memory while also providing opportunity for current youth athletes.

“I started hosting this match years ago to give more Alaskan athletes an opportunity to earn EIC points,” Foust said. “There aren’t many chances in state to do that.”

Speer and CCI Ammunition Announce Production of Catalyst Lead-Free Primers

Speer and CCI Ammunition announce the implementation and production of market-leading Catalyst lead-free priming technology in their Lewiston, Idaho facility. The proprietary Catalyst primer was initially developed by Speer and CCI’s partner company, Federal Ammunition, starting in 2016.

“We are extremely proud of this new production capability which continues the rollout of an incredible primer technology,” said Federal, CCI and Speer President Jason Vanderbrink. “This product has proven to be the best in its class after nearly seven years of continuous production. Its consistent performance has been tested over hundreds of millions of rounds. Most notably, the product is featured in Federal’s innovative Syntech Range ammo and American Eagle Lead-Free.”

The extremely clean-burning Catalyst primer creates more uniform and complete propellant combustion, yielding minimal velocity variation and consistent bullet launch for improved accuracy. It is also non-hydrophilic, so it does not attract water molecules like DDNP-based mixes found in most lead-free primers, resulting in better reliability.

“Catalyst lead-free priming technology provides the cleanest, most consistent ignition possible. We are excited that our Lewiston plant is now set up to run Catalyst priming in our target pistol products,” said Speer and CCI’s Director of Factory Operations Mike Overberg. “The Anoka facility has proven this to be the best lead-free priming technology available. Our staff here has done a fantastic job of working across factories to extend this product into Speer and CCI Blazer ammunition products made in Lewiston, Idaho.”

Speer and CCI Ammunition can be found at dealers nationwide. For more information on all products or to shop online, visit www.speer.com and www.cci-ammunition.com.
