INNOVATIVE USA MANUFACTURING LEADS THE WORLD IN ARROW ACCURACY

Salt Lake City, Utah— Since 1922, improving shooter accuracy has been a main driver behind Easton archery engineering. To meet that goal, Easton has developed a proprietary process called Acu-carbon. The Acu-Carbon process is a continuous-fed, single-die manufacturing method that produces uniform shafts and eliminates the need for spine and weight sorting that can plague accuracy-seeking archers and bowhunters. Carbon shafts made this way are used throughout the Easton line and are found in products such as 6.5, AXIS, and FMJ.

SAF CHEERS 5th CIRCUIT VICTORY IN VANDERSTOK FRAME, RECEIVER CASE

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation is cheering a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in the case of VanDerStok v. Garland, challenging the authority of the Justice Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to regulate items that are not firearms, as if they were firearms.

SAF had intervened in the case, opposing the ATF’s change in defining frames and receivers. The court today refused to stay portions of the rule SAF successfully challenged, pending appeal. Issues which SAF did not challenge when it intervened in the case were granted a stay. SAF and its partners in the intervention are represented by attorney Chad Flores.

According to the Fifth Circuit panel, “Because the ATF has not demonstrated a strong likelihood of success on the merits, nor irreparable harm in the absence of a stay, we DENY the government’s request to stay the vacatur of the two challenged portions of the Rule. “[V]acatur …reestablish[es] the status quo ante”…which is the world before the Rule became effective. This effectively maintains, pending appeal, the status quo that existed for 54 years from 1968 to 2022.

“The court issued a ruling which declined to stay our successful challenge during this appeal,” noted SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “As this case moves forward, we expect to again prevail on the portions of the Final Rule that we challenged. The court’s finding that ATF had not demonstrated a strong likelihood of success on the merits bodes well for SAF and its members.”

“We’re delighted the court ruled in favor of our challenges to the Biden administration’s overreach, and we will pursue this case to its ultimate conclusion,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb.

NWTF Dedication Event Raises over $1 Million for Conservation

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — Over 250 NWTF major donors, corporate partners, agency representatives and NWTF members from across Minnesota gathered in Caledonia – the headspring of wild turkey restoration in the state – last Saturday to celebrate the NWTF’s 50th Anniversary and the overall restoration of the wild turkey in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The assembly of conservationists celebrated and told stories from over the last five decades, all while raising $1.19 million dollars for on-the-ground conservation and to help propel the organization for another 50 years.

“We are beyond humbled by the generosity and passion demonstrated in Caledonia last weekend,” NWTF co-CEO Jason Burckhalter said. “This is the same resolve that allowed a grassroots organization founded 50 years ago to blossom into the conservation powerhouse it is today. To everyone in Caledonia last weekend, thank you! The commitment to conserve the wild turkey and preserve our hunting heritage is the reason why we have the privilege of celebrating 50 years, and it is the same reason why we will celebrate in another 50.”

The event was held in Caledonia’s North Park, where three permanent bronze cairns were installed to commemorate the restoration of the wild turkey in Minnesota and all of those who made it possible, with two plaques highlighting the NWTF’s Minnesota Major Donors and one recounting wild turkey restoration efforts of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the NWTF.

The event was kicked off with a welcome address from Caledonia Mayor Dwayne “Tank” Schroeder, a 43-year member of the NWTF. The mayor later presented Burckhalter with the key to Caledonia.

“It was an honor to have this event here in Caledonia,” Schroeder said. “It was an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come, but also an opportunity to rally everyone for the work we still need to accomplish. We thank the NWTF for putting the spotlight on our town and our incredible story.”

Bickar, Franks Claim Top Events During 2023 National Trophy Pistol Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Narrowly reaching the high score in the President’s Pistol Match at the 2023 National Matches by just three x-ring shots, John Bickar, 46, of Menlo Park, CA, has now added his name to the list of gifted athletes who have won the coveted competition over the last four decades. The event was held as part of the annual Pistol series fired at Camp Perry in July, facilitated by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP).

The President’s Pistol Match saw steep competition in 2023 – with the top five places separated only by one point. Bickar netted the win with a score of 386-13X.

SFC Ryan Franks led the National Trophy Individual Match.

Likewise, SFC Ryan Franks, 35, of Ellerslie, GA, led the respected National Trophy Individual Pistol Match with a score of 295-13X. His performance was two points shy of the current national record, set by SSG James Henderson in 2009. Franks, who earned the overall individual service pistol aggregate title in 2022, achieved the honor again in 2023.

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit claimed the win in the National Trophy Team Match.

Later, he joined teammates SFC Greg Markowski, SSG Carl Clegg and SFC Ryan Adams to help claim the win in the National Trophy Team Match with a commanding score of 1130-34X – 24 points above second place finishers CRPA Scarlet, the High Civilian team.

SFC Adams went on to overtake the Military & Police Service Pistol Match with a score of 383-12X, clearing teammate SSG Hudock by a point. Though he fell short in the Military event, Hudock surpassed Adams to victory in the As-Issued 1911 competition.

Alaska Team Feature: Borealis Bullseyes

I caught up with the Borealis Bullseyes from Anchorage, Alaska, to talk with rising high school junior Henry Riffe, and rising high school seniors, Sophie Wilts, Bella Anderson, Cora Anderson (yes, twins) to discuss their journey as a team and future plans. Coach Marshel Reed started this club team back in 2000. In 2001, his team won gold at the National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, and he’s been chasing another victory ever since.

Training in Alaska can be tough at times. Shooting practice in the winter requires them to drag their bags through 3 feet of snow, when its -20°F. The training was worth it though; the Borealis Bullseyes placed 2nd at the Western Regionals in Sandy, Utah, which qualified them for the CMP National 3P Precision Air Rifle Championships here at Camp Perry. This impressive performance has made Utah a favorite match for them.

The Alaska team competed in the CMP Three-Position Precision Air Rifle Championship at Camp Perry which included three positions: kneeling, prone and standing.

The team placed 36th overall this week at Camp Perry with an aggregate score of 2,268-100x. They did well and seemed to have fun while doing it too. The team liked Ohio so far and although they didn’t make it out to Cedar Point, Sophie said the team has a great view of the nuclear power plant from their hotel window! They did, however, enjoy a team trip out to Kelleys Island, and tried a local favorite, Toft’s Ice Cream.

The team visited the Glacial Grooves at Kelleys Island.

A fun ritual the team participates in is dying their hair with blue hairspray. Unfortunately, on the day we spoke they had washed it out because it had gotten all over their suits the day before. As for music, the aux cord in the car goes to Bella, who only plays Taylor Swift on the way home from matches.  The girls don’t mind, but Henry is not too keen on the choice, protesting, “It’s terrible, I hate it. It’s 20 songs in a row and I’m just looking out the window trying to tune it out.”  He’s outnumbered but his teammates insist that Swift is growing on him and has even been spotted bopping his head along to some songs.

The Lake Erie Love chair is located in downtown Port Clinton, home of CMP Headquarters and the National Matches.

The future is bright for these young athletes. The three seniors are looking ahead and planning for college, although no decisions have been made yet. The Anderson sisters have plans to tour a few colleges, some of which have rifle programs. Henry has a bit more time to think about that than the others as he is starting his junior year of high school. Sophie was excited to be staying behind to shoot in the 3-Position Smallbore National Match, the following day where she placed 72 with an aggregate score of 1,080-20x. It is clear that whatever they decide to do next, if they give it the same dedication and energy as they give the sport of shooting, there’s no doubt that they can and will succeed. Find out more about the CMP Air Rifle Postal Match, set to begin this Fall, at https://thecmp.org/youth/three-position-national-postal-competition.

The Value of a MY MEDIC First Aid Kit

It started out as a discussion and, honestly, it got a little heated. I like to store a bag in the back of the car that I know has a certain number of items that I know we will always use. This includes a blanket, an ice scraper, window cleaner, some discs to play disc golf, a flashlight and a first aid kit. My wife’s vehicle, like many cars, has a built-in first aid kit, but it is of little value in all reality. Adding these things to the car was no stress to me, and our discussion was on the value of being prepared. My wife had never needed a first aid kit or preparation bag in the vehicle, and did not think it was an essential item to add to the vehicle. I added the My Medic MYFAK MINI PRO to the vehicle anyway after putting my foot down in a very polite way. I do love my wife, and I told her I wanted us safe just in case something happened.

It only took about 45 days or so for the other shoe to drop. Actually, it was an AX and it dropped right into my shin bone just below my knee. We had bought a couple of aspen trees to plant in the backyard and after planting them, I needed to stake them in because we get some pretty high winds here in Nebraska. I looked around for something to pound the stake in with, grabbed a brick and quickly broke it pounding in the stake. That wasn’t going to work, so I walked up to the office where I have 3 axes and hatchets to review. I grabbed a lightweight felling ax from Hults Bruk, pulled off the sheath, walked down and started to pound in the stake with the back of the ax.

This was my “Well Damn” moment and I am really not sure what happened exactly, but I do know the ax blade made contact with my shin bone cutting into my leg with about a solid 3 inch straight cut all the way to the bone. The Hults Bruk is like a razor; it had never been used, so it cut deep and true.

I looked down and yelled out, “Oh NO, Oh NO! Marjorie, I need a first aid kit FAST!” The great news was she knew exactly where it was: in the car. She was back in under 60 seconds. She helped me to lay down in the grass, we opened the kit and laid it out in front of us. We grabbed the Zzips first as I was holding the wound closed. She opened the package and gave them to me one at a time. We got those on quickly and sutured up the wound, keeping it closed extremely well. I then grabbed the quikclot bleeding control bandage and wrapped over the Zzips and the wound itself nice and tight. The next thing I grabbed was the Emergency Pressure Bandage and put that on wrapping; it nice and tight as well. There was no blood escaping, so I got up and walked to the car for the trip to the emergency room. I was lucky: I missed any arteries and didn’t have to put on a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, but I could have if needed.

The emergency room personnel were impressed with what we had done. Truthfully, I was in and out of the emergency room in under 90 minutes with 12 new staples. We even went to dinner because I was starving. Was I lucky? 100%. Was I prepared for that moment? 100%. In discussions with my beautiful wife, we both agree now to have first aid kits in our home and our vehicles at all times. I have had a kit in my hunting pack over the last several decades. But on a perfect afternoon, did I do something stupid by using an AX to pound in a stake? Absolutely. Did I think I was going to get hurt? Not even for a second. And yet it was a very fast instant from being a perfect afternoon to one that could have ended rather ugly. I GOT LUCKY, I was not all that far from an artery, in fact less than an inch from the Tibial Artery on either side.

Gear Up for the Hunt: DSG’s Cutting-Edge Women’s Upland Collection- Performance, Functionality, and Comfort

By Bethany Beathard

DSG Outerwear continues to revolutionize how women are gearing up for their outdoor adventures. DSG Outerwear has developed yet another hunting collection for the female hunter. Gone are the days of hodge-podge hunting closets full of a mixture of men’s and youth pieces. This collection was designed specifically for women who seek a feminine tailored fit and functionality for upland hunting. Something that stands out to me about this collection overall is the purposeful pockets and useful features. DSG designers understand the importance of convenient storage while out in the field. The upland hunting collection incorporates purposeful pockets and features that enable hunters to carry essential gear, ammunition, and personal items securely and within easy reach. DSG Outerwear understands that successful upland hunting requires apparel that can keep up with the demanding conditions of the field. The upland collection boasts a range of garments crafted from quality and high-performance materials. Each piece is meticulously designed to provide maximum comfort and protection against the elements. The thoughtful details, such as reinforced stitching, strategic ventilation, and adjustable closures, don’t go unnoticed. From flattering cuts to thoughtful color palettes, the collection embraces feminine design elements without compromising functionality. Let’s delve into the key pieces of this collection and its features.

Upland Performance Fleece

My first thought on this pullover was definitely performance and comfort. The exterior is a smooth, active-performance blend of 94% polyester and 6% spandex. This lightweight 1/4 zip fleece pullover comes in a blaze orange and stone color combo. It has a soft fleece feel on the inside with zippered chest and hand-warmer front pockets. This soft pullover holds its shape and will keep your body warm. A nicely added feature is the thumb holes in the lower sleeves; these help hold the sleeve in place and adds a cozy feel. Most importantly, you remain visible during your hunting or scouting venture. The cozy upland fleece can serve as your outer layer during cool seasons or as a mid-layer during colder seasons. I would like to see this fleece in other color combos for other hunting seasons or casual wear. I would buy everyone! The fit is feminine yet true to size. The upland performance fleece is available in sizes XXS-4XL and retails for $80.

Firearm Safety and Education Remain a Priority at GLOCK

SMYRNA, GA. – July 6, 2023 During the month of June, we promoted National Safety Month to help those who own and use firearms understand the importance of why firearm safety shouldn’t be taken lightly – on or off of the range.

Throughout National Safety Month, we have provided tips on how to properly and safely handle, maintain, and store a firearm, in addition to how to take proactive measures by sharing safety resources, and fostering a culture of safety. “We know that firearms can be unforgiving – mistakes in handling and storing them can have a major impact on us all forever changing our lives, which is why it is a crucial goal of ours at GLOCK to create awareness, in hopes to expand everyone’s understanding about the importance of firearm safety,” says Josh Dorsey, Vice President of GLOCK, Inc.

As firearm safety and education remains the number one priority at GLOCK, National Safety Month is an opportunity for us to connect with firearm enthusiasts and owners to encourage them to commit to following the rules of firearm safety by taking the safety pledge.

GLOCK is committed to spreading the word of firearm safety and making it a priority to encourage all firearm owners to do the same. To learn how you can take the pledge to commit to #FollowTheFour rules of firearm safety or share the message to educate others, visit followthefour.com
