The Scent Thief® Hunter’s Pack Keeps the True Outdoorsman Undetected

Prepare to conquer the wild with the unparalleled power of the Scent Thief® Hunter’s Pack. Engineered to give the user a competitive edge, this comprehensive collection of odor-blocking products ensures scent remains undetected, increasing the chances of completing the ultimate hunt.

At the heart of the Scent Thief Hunter’s Pack stands the groundbreaking 24oz Scent Thief Field Spray and a 32oz refill bottle for the rest of the season. Harnessing the patented “No Smell” technology, this remarkable product effectively shuts down an animal’s olfactory nerve, rendering them incapable of detecting any odor.

Alongside these revolutionary scent stealing products in the Scent Thief Hunter’s Pack is the 16oz Scent Thief Body Wash & Shampoo. This product plays a crucial role in the all-inclusive Scent Thief No Smell System. This specially formulated product cleanses hair and body effectively, employing the same patented odor-blocking technology as the Field Spray. Used in conjunction with the field spray, it eliminates an animal’s ability to detect any threatening odors.

Embrace the future of scent control technology with the Scent Thief Wafer, the next evolution in No Smell Technology. By simply hanging the wafer in a tree or blind, the wind becomes an ally as it carries its scent, creating a “No Smell Area” around the hunter. Using the wafer alongside the Field Spray for optimal results is recommended, especially in windy conditions. The oil-based wafer evaporates slowly, synergizing perfectly with the water-based spray for unparalleled effectiveness.

Worried about the wafer’s lifespan? Each wafer, packaged in a resealable pouch, will last two full days or four hunts.

North Dakota Governor Recognizes NWTF for 50 Years

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum recently honored the National Wild Turkey Federation with a certificate of recognition for it its 50th Anniversary.

“We are honored to be recognized by Gov. Burgum,” said Steve Meyer, NWTF North Dakota State Chapter president. “This recognition would not be possible without our volunteers across the state working for the greater good of conservation and our hunting heritage.”

The certificate of recognition reads:

“The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) was incorporated in 1973, with its headquarters in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Over the past 50 years, the NWTF has played a vital role in conserving and reviving the wild turkey population, which was on the brink of extinction. Through partnerships with various organizations and government agencies, the NWTF has invested over half a billion dollars to conserve and enhance more than 22 million acres of wildlife habitat. They have also focused on recruiting and reactivating hunters, successfully engaging 1.5 million individuals since 2012. Additionally, the NWTF has been a leading stewardship partner of the USDA Forest Service for over 40 years and actively involved in combating wildfires. Their local chapters, like those in North Dakota, have made a significant impact on turkey restoration efforts, resulting in strong turkey populations and high hunter success rates in the state.”

The NWTF policy team and its volunteer leadership are working with state legislatures across the country to pass similar measures this year that enshrine the NWTF’s legacy and mission delivery into state law.

Chestnut Harvest with Chestnut Hill Outdoors

Planting orchards of Dunstan Chestnuts is a great way to attract deer and other wildlife to your property. However, you can also take advantage of the fruits of your labor more directly by harvesting some chestnuts for consumption. Here are a few tips for harvesting your Dunstan Chestnuts.

Dunstan Chestnuts ripen and drop in early September in the deep South, in mid-September in central states, and in October in northern states. Harvest typically lasts 4-6 weeks, depending on variety and climate. In warmer temperatures, harvest nuts daily, if possible, to lower desiccation and spoilage of the nuts in the field. In northern areas, you can harvest nuts less frequently.

However, you’ll want to harvest your share as soon as they drop or risk losing them to wildlife. Just be sure to leave enough for the wildlife as well. While competition from wildlife is a bane to commercial orchardists, it can be a boom for private landowners who are also interested in attracting and feeding wildlife.

Traditional harvest is done by hand, wearing heavy gloves to protect you from the nut’s spiny husks, called burrs. In commercial orchards, pickers are often paid by the pound or bucket as an incentive to work quickly and control costs. Some growers offer this as a fund-raiser to schools or church groups. Private landowners may want to make it a weekend social event, letting friends, family, and/or neighbors share in the work and the bounty.

Once the nuts are separated from their burrs, wash them in a hot water bath (122F) for 30 minutes, then cool to 32-35F in a cooler. This kills weevil eggs before they hatch. Nuts with worms (young weevils) float to the surface and should be removed and destroyed. Pack the sound nuts in a breathable container to allow for desiccation, store under refrigeration, and rotate bags regularly to prevent mold. Nuts stored this way should last 2-3 months.

KOR® VRS GUN CASE INSERTS FEATURED ON “THE EDGE” TELEVISION SHOW

KOR® Technik, known for inventing and patenting the only foam replacement system, the Vacuum Rigidizing Structure (VRS®), will be featured on The Edge television show in the episode airing August 3 at 9:30 p.m. EST. Show hosts Joe Eppele and Steve Ecklund use the KOR VRS gun case inserts to replace the foam in their hard-sided cases to transport guns and gear to the field. The Edge airs on Wild TV and streams on Wild TV Plus, and the KOR episode will re-air beginning on August 31, 2023.

G.P. Searle, Founder of KOR Technik, said, “The antelope hunt episode of The Edge is a great chance for folks to see how Joe and Steve use KOR’s VRS system during their hunt. They traveled back and forth from the U.S. and Canada twice with their gear before landing in New Mexico to hunt pronghorn and were thrilled with the results after multiple airplane transfers.”

Operating the VRS system is fast and easy, said Searle. “Think of it like a moldable bean bag. When filled with air, it looks and feels like a pillow in the bottom of your case. Place your guns and gear atop the insert, then use the included pump to remove the air. You’ll see the soft, pliable cushion change into a solid structure conforming to whatever is resting on it,” he explained. “At that point, the VRS insert is in a solid state and ready for transportation or storage. When you use your case for different gear, attach the pump and add air back into the VRS Insert.”

“Like many people, we travel far distances for destination hunting experiences, and having confidence that our guns, optics, and gear will arrive as expected is priceless,” said Eppele. “Because the KOR VRS inserts keep everything snug, we don’t worry our guns will arrive scratched, or our optics will need to be zeroed again. We arrive and are immediately prepared.”

Ecklund commented, “Noone wants to waste time messing around with damaged firearms or equipment when arriving after a long trip for a special hunting experience. I was delighted when I traveled to New Zealand and used the KOR VRS Inserts. After thousands of miles, the lightweight transportation system did exactly what it was designed to do–it kept my guns stable, clean, dry, and ready for action.”

Junior Olympics Precision Air Rifle Champion: Jack Ogoreuc

Jack Ogoreuc, 16, of Grove City, Pennsylvania, was on top of his game at the CMP and Junior Olympics Precision Air Rifle Championships held in July at Camp Perry. He has been hard at work, preparing for Nationals at his junior club, the Oil City Shooting Club, in Pennsylvania. He claimed many victories throughout the week including victories in the Smallbore 3P and Air Gun National Matches.

Ogoreuc placed first in the Junior Olympics Precision 3P Championship, with a final score of 467.7 – only .7 points over the second place finisher, Makenzie Larson. Jack and Makenzie both earned a spot on the National Future’s Team. He reflected on that moment saying, “It kinda felt surreal. I wasn’t really focusing on it, and it just kind of came up. It wasn’t on my radar for this match and then boom, there it is.”

Jack received the gold for the Junior Olympics Championship along with several team awards.

Jack also won High Intermediate Junior for air rifle with a score of 1239.9 and High Intermediate Junior for smallbore with a score of 1152-33x. His team, PA #1, earned several team wins for air rifle including High State Association team for the 3-member elimination match and gold junior team in the 3-member elimination match. For smallbore, the PA #1 team won the High State Association team 3-member elimination match, second place junior team 3-member elimination match, three position smallbore junior champion team and the third place open team.

Jack has been involved in shooting sports for about four years. He was introduced to the sport through youth field days near his hometown. Someone at the field days suggested that he join a local youth team and he found the Oil City Shooting Club, which he has been a part of ever since. He was still playing hockey when he started the sport of marksmanship. For Jack, it was just a fun Friday night activity. But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, playing hockey wasn’t possible anymore so he spent more time focusing on shooting. He said, “that’s when my scores went up and I started medaling.”

Jack, along with Makenzie Larson, earned jackets and a spot on the National Future’s Team.

Jack wasn’t alone at his firing point during Nationals. Joining him throughout his matches was a small plush Bob Ross. He hangs it on his offhand stand offering encouragement and comfort, “Happy little tens,” Jack said with a smile. He acquired this Bob Ross plush in a claw machine while at a rifle camp with his friend. They spent the evening trying to win the toy and dared each other to shoot with it on the stand during their prone match that weekend. Ogoreuc added, “We both shot great and it stuck that we keep Bob on the line when we shoot.”

Adult, Junior Marksmen Find New Techniques at 2023 National Matches Clinics

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Each year, hundreds of visitors from all corners of the country attend the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) National Matches, participating in the variety of traditional and contemporary rifle competitions for both adults and juniors.

Though many arrive for the competition alone, others come to hone their skills on the range through training by some of today’s best marksmen and women through high-level courses like the Advanced Highpower Clinic and the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Highpower Clinic.

During the Advanced Clinic, participants rotate through a number of coaches for more diverse training.

More than 100 participants met on the firing line for the CMP Advanced Highpower Clinic in 2023, where they received detailed instruction in service rifle competition techniques using classroom and range discussion. The class utilizes both dry-fire training on the range as well as live-fire practice. Areas of focus include wind reading, mental management, care and use of equipment, zeroing, range safety, positioning and more.

Robert Turnquist, 60, traveled from Lincoln Park, MI, to attend this year’s Advanced Clinic. Interested in marksmanship his entire life, Turnquist, a long-time National Matches attendee, first arrived when he was invited by old friends back in 2015 and has returned on his own ever since.

Robert Turnquist (seen here with coach Brian Williams) attended his first Advanced Clinic in 2023.

“I fell in love with the place,” he said of Camp Perry. “It’s like going back to camp when you’re a kid. I drank the Kool-Aid.”

Biden Administration Cancels Hunter Education& Archery Funding

U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis recently wrote Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to register their grave disapproval of a decision by the Biden Administration to eliminate federal funding for hunter education and archery programs in public schools. This letter was in direct response to schools contacting the Senators to inform them of the defunding due to the Administration’s interpretation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) – signed in 2022 – that included language prohibiting funding from providing “training in the use of a dangerous weapon.”

Today, July 31, the Biden administration confirmed to Fox News Digital that it is withholding funds for these schools. As the article states, the Department of Education’s, “funding decisions were based on the plain text interpretation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA).” Obviously, that “plain text” has been interpreted in a specific way by the Administration, because nobody would otherwise describe hunter education as “training in the use of a dangerous weapon.”

Senators Cornyn and Tillis addressed this misinterpretation in their letter, stating that it was neither the legislative intent of the Congress nor a plain reading of the text that leads to the conclusions drawn by the Administration. After today’s confirmation, the Biden administration is obviously sticking with its defunding plan to eliminate hunter education and archery programs, affecting hundreds of thousands, if not millions of young people, nationwide.

The Sportsmen’s Alliance is looking into our legal options on this matter, and we will keep you informed as things progress. This is not the first time the Biden Administration has worked to crater our hunting traditions, and we do not expect it to be the last.

Hunting – One of the Safest Activities in America

Most people would be surprised to learn that hunting is one of the safest recreational activities in America. Despite the stigma often associated with firearms, hunting is a relatively safe sport and a great way to spend time outside. But with over 15.9 million paid hunting license holders in the United States, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, accidents are bound to happen sooner or later.

Situational Awareness and Emergency Preparedness

In addition to being knowledgeable of safe hunting practices to ensure the safety of themselves and others in the field, hunters should be equipped with comprehensive First Aid kits. While standard kits are likely to suffice in most situations, some emergencies require more specialized items, like a tourniquet or dressing for open chest wounds.

If you or someone in your party suffers a hunter-related shooting incident, you should have a chest seal that allows you to treat, seal and reseal open chest wounds. You can see more here about this essential item that every hunter should add to their kit for emergency preparedness.

Hunting Safety by the Numbers

While hunting is becoming more and more popular throughout the country, data released by the National Safety Council demonstrates that unintentional firearms-related fatalities continue to decline and remain at historically low levels.

From 1992 to 2012, unintentional firearms-related fatalities decreased by 57 percent and make up less than 0.5 percent of all unintended fatalities in the U.S. This improved safety is undoubtedly due to the proliferation of firearms safety education programs.

CSF Leads Effort with Senate CSC Leadership to Pass Duck Stamp Modernization Act

Yesterday evening, the U.S. Senate passed a top priority for the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) known as the Duck Stamp Modernization Act of 2023 (S. 788). This bipartisan bill is led by the entire Senate Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus Leadership, Co-Chairs Sens. John Boozman and Joe Manchin and Vice-Chairs Sens. Angus King and Roger Marshall.

Prior to the vote, CSF worked with the bill sponsors and key offices to help navigate this bill through the political process and ultimately a successful floor vote. The Senate passage of this bill builds upon the House Natural Resources Committee passage of the House companion bill led by CSC Vice-Chair Rep. Garret Graves and CSC Member Rep. Mike Thompson.

The Duck Stamp Modernization Act will simplify the Federal Duck Stamp process by allowing hunters to have an electronic duck stamp on their smartphone for the entirety of the hunting season. Under current law, when a hunter purchases an electronic Federal Duck Stamp (e-stamp), the e-stamp is only valid for a period of 45 days to allow for the actual stamp to be mailed. Once the actual stamp is received by the e-stamp purchaser, the actual stamp must be signed by the respective hunter across the face of the stamp and be in the hunter’s possession while afield. However, this legislation will remove the 45-day validation period and make the electronic stamp valid for the entirety of the hunting season. To ensure the continuance and integrity of the Federal Duck Stamp art contest, a longstanding tradition for waterfowlers and other bird enthusiasts alike, S. 788 will ensure that purchasers of e-stamps still receive the actual stamp in the mail. Specifically, the legislation will provide that actual stamps will be mailed to purchasers from March 10 to June 30.

“The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation thanks the Senate CSC Leadership for shepherding the Duck Stamp Modernization Act through the Senate on a unanimous vote,” said CSF President and CEO Jeff Crane. “This legislation not only improves the Federal duck stamp process for nearly one million waterfowl hunters, but it also safeguards the rich history and traditions of the Federal Duck Stamp artwork contest.”

Signed into law in 1934, the Federal Duck Stamp has generated over $1.1 billion for wetlands conservation and helped conserve over 6 million acres of wetlands within the National Wildlife Refuge System. In 1934, there were roughly 635,000 stamps sold. Today, that number has grown to over 1.5 million stamp purchases, which generates more than $37.5 million for wetlands conservation. Importantly, approximately 98% of the Federal Duck Stamp purchase price is spent directly on the management and acquisition of wetlands to bolster habitat for wetland dependent species such as ducks, geese, shorebirds, fish, turtles, and countless others.

SAF WILL OPPOSE DOJ STAY REQUEST TO SUPREME COURT IN GUN PARTS KIT CASE

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation and its attorney, Chad Flores, are preparing a response to an application to the U.S. Supreme Court by the Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to stay a ruling which vacated the “final rule” defining gun parts kits as firearms in a case known as VanDerStok v. Garland.

U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor handed down the ruling, and the government wants a stay pending appeal to the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. SAF was allowed to intervene in the case. Earlier this month, the Fifth Circuit refused to stay portions of the rule SAF successfully challenged, pending appeal. Issues which SAF did not challenge when it intervened in the case were granted a stay.

“This case ultimately challenges the authority of the ATF to simply change rules and definitions of firearms without Congressional authority,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “We will vigorously pursue this issue through the courts.”

“The Fifth Circuit last week issued a ruling which declined to stay our successful challenge during this appeal,” SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut recalled. “We expect to prevail on the portions of the Final Rule that we challenged, which the government wants to enforce while this case winds its way through the courts, despite the fact that the court found ATF had not demonstrated a strong likelihood of success on the merits, which bodes well for SAF and its members.”

Gottlieb said SAF’s response will oppose the request for a stay, and will likely be filed next week.

NWTF and USDA Forest Service Collaborate to Tackle Wildfire Crisis in Montana

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The National Wild Turkey Federation has teamed up with the USDA Forest Service in Montana’s Bitterroot National Forest to conduct forest restoration amid what has been deemed a wildfire crisis. The restoration is part of the NWTF’s Big Sky Forestry Initiative and the Forest Service’s Wildfire Crisis Strategy.

The ongoing project, known as the Stevensville West Central Fuels Reduction project, encompasses approximately eight miles of Forest Service boundary in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, stretching between the Sharrot and Silverthorn Watershed in the north and the Sweathouse Watershed in the south.

The wildfire crisis has emerged as a significant concern in the western regions, primarily attributed to factors such as deteriorating forest health caused by overgrown forests, a warming climate and unprecedented drought conditions. In this project area, the absence of beneficial low-intensity fires over an extended period has led to the rapid increase of Douglas fir and other conifers, which has in turn, outcompeted and crowded out the ponderosa pine. This situation has escalated the risk of wildfires in the region and resulted in a decline in wildlife habitat diversity, underscoring the critical importance of the ongoing restoration project.

Through the West Central project, partners and contractors will reduce the risk of stand replacement wildfires through various strategic approaches. These include reducing the number of trees in the area, improving conditions for select tree species, minimizing fuels that allow fire to easily spread and elevating canopy base height by removing low-hanging branches. By undertaking these treatments, the project will set the forest on a positive path toward restoring its structure, composition and overall health.

The final goal of this project will re-establish a fire-adapted, resilient, diverse and sustainable forest ecosystem, ensuring better protection against future wildfire events. Additionally, these improvements will foster the growth of abundant forage for wildlife, creating high-quality wildlife habitat that promotes ecological balance and long-term sustainability in the region.
