Continuing over Two Decades of Habitat Enhancements

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The NWTF continues its Challenge Cost-Share agreement with the USDA Forest Service in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest.

The NWTF’s Challenge Cost-Share agreement with the Green Mountain National Forest dates back two decades. Over the years, collaborative efforts have translated to hundreds of acres of wild turkey habitat improvements and the enhancement of overall biodiversity across the national forest.

The GMNF has a Land and Resource Management Plan that lays out a goal for up to 5% of the forest to be managed as permanent upland openings. Reaching that goal is complex and is where the NWTF steps in to collaborate with the Forest Service and support their management priorities while creating some excellent wildlife habitat.

A permanent opening in the Green Mountain National Forest that is part of the forest’s Land and Resource Management Plan.

“One of the Green Mountain National Forest’s forest-wide composition objectives is to maintain and restore the quality, amount and distribution of habitats that produce viable and sustainable populations of native and nonnative desirable plants and wildlife,” said Scott Wixsom, Forest Service biological technician.

Maintaining these forest objectives is done through management techniques such as planting pollinator-friendly grasses, using equipment to mulch undesirable woody vegetation and prescribed fire to open understories and let the sunlight in. In the Green Mountain National Forest, much of this work is done specifically to create and manage wildlife openings.

SAN FRANCISCO BACKS DOWN ON GUN CONTROL AFTER SAF, CRPA VOW TO SUE

BELLEVUE, WA – The San Francisco County Board of Supervisors has backed down on a proposed ordinance that would make much of the city into a “gun-free zone” after the Second Amendment Foundation and California Rifle & Pistol Association promised legal action.

The proposal was championed by Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who essentially tabled the motion indefinitely, after bemoaning the 2023 Supreme Court Bruen decision, which is giving gun control proponents fits, while jarring the San Francisco Police Department to start issuing carry permits. She referenced, perhaps as a face-saving maneuver, proposed state legislation that may be adopted later this summer by lawmakers in Sacramento, as a reason to stand down on the proposed ordinance.

“This happened after CRPA and SAF sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors explaining why the planned ordinance would be unconstitutional,” said CRPA President Chuck Michel, a longtime practicing attorney and gun rights authority in California. “It is truly unfortunate that San Francisco politicians refuse to respect the Second Amendment and can’t accept the new legal reality that people have a Second Amendment right to carry a firearm in public.”

“As soon as we were advised of this proposal,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “we took action. This is not the first time we’ve had to stop extremist gun control in San Francisco. We successfully sued the city twice over attempted handgun bans, and won both times. We’re prepared to do it again, but our letter to the Board of Supervisors evidently has made that unnecessary.”

“Our warning to the Board of Supervisors was direct and left little room for doubt about our intentions,” noted SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “The letter clearly explained why the proposal was bad policy, and would result in another SAF-CRPA victory. We also reminded the Board it should wait to see whether the state legislation is adopted and how it fares under litigation. That appears to have had the desired impact.”

Curtis Self makes difference for new hunter in Take ’em Hunting challenge

Patrick Grindey had expressed an interest in hunting. Curtis Self stepped in when the loss of a mutual friend and mentor would have prevented him from being shown the ropes.

Instead, Self, 45, got Grindey, 21, started on the path to hunting, and by the 2022 waterfowl season, they were hunting blue-winged teal in the Take ’em Hunting challenge.

On July 20, Self, of Omaha, accepted the Take ’em Hunting grand prize John Deere Gator utility vehicle, donated by AKRS Equipment and the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, in a ceremony at the AKRS store in Elkhorn.

Self, an athletic trainer for the Creighton University baseball team, was drawn randomly from nearly 400 participants in the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s challenge to take a beginner hunting and submit a photo online. It was the fourth year for the seven-month challenge designed to encourage people to invite others to try the sport.

His journey to teach Grindey, a student manager on the baseball team, began with lessons on firearm safety, followed by time on the range shooting clay targets. Grindey completed a hunter safety course and eventually bought a shotgun and waders before the two picked a date to go hunting blue-winged teal in Burt County. They shot eight teal. After the hunt, Self showed Grindey how to clean a duck.

New Haven, Mo. – ALPS Mountaineering, manufacturer of performance gear for wilderness adventures, exploration, and family camping, understands that minimizing mess and clutter is key to a fun and successful camping adventure.

Land Tawney, Longtime BHA President and CEO, Announces Departure

Under Tawney’s leadership, BHA grew from a small, volunteer-based organization to the North American leader in hunter/angler public lands advocacy; BHA board will lead search committee

MISSOULA, Mont. – Today, after 10 years of dedicated service building an organization that has become the continent’s leading voice for hunters and anglers and public lands and waters, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers President and CEO Land Tawney announced his departure from BHA, effective the end of July.

Over the course of Tawney’s tenure, BHA vaulted from a small, volunteer-based, Western-centric organization with less than a thousand members to a North American-wide influential powerhouse with chapters in 48 states, Washington, D.C., two Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory. With an engaged community of more than half a million members, supporters and partners and 30-plus staff, BHA is impacting policy from a local to federal level, playing an increasing role in the stewardship of North America’s public lands and waters, winning fights for conservation and access, and creating a “big tent” gathering point for outdoorsmen and women of all stripes.

“My time at BHA has been the most gratifying of my conservation career,” said Tawney. “A lot of people think their voice doesn’t count and feel disenfranchised from decisions affecting our public lands, waters and wildlife. Together, the dedicated volunteers, members and staff at BHA have turned that notion on its head. Margaret Mead’s quote couldn’t ring more true: ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’”

Notable policy wins achieved by BHA under Tawney’s watch include permanently reauthorizing and fully funding the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund; successfully banning drones for hunting and scouting across much of North America; defeating a range of ill-conceived attempts to sell, transfer or privatize public lands and waters (including legislation introduced – and then quickly withdrawn – by then-Congressman Jason Chaffetz); ensuring the long-term conservation of the Boundary Waters Wilderness; and, most recently, defending public access via corner crossing in Wyoming.

Chêne Launches Youth Collection, Wader Exchange Program

Chêne Gear, maker of performance waterfowl hunting apparel, is launching a new youth apparel collection and a one-of-a-kind program that allows children to trade in their waders as they grow. This program will help provide children a better experience in the woods and help parents with the costs of kids outgrowing their gear.

Chêne’s founders started the company to create high-quality, durable hunting gear they always dreamed of owning but was never available on the market, and that goal also inspired the new youth collection, which includes youth-sized versions of the brand’s flagship waders, the Over-and-Under Jacket, Hydro-Lok Shell, and Sherpa Fleece Wader Pants.

“It’s ironic that we inevitably stick the kids with the hand-me-downs and lower quality gear, when they’re the ones who actually need the higher functioning, better performing gear. They’re the ones who we want to have the absolute best possible experience so that they’ll come back again and again, bring their friends, and talk about it at school,” said Field Norris, co-founder of Chêne Gear and father of young hunters. “We saw this as a challenge from day one and set out to fix it.”

Under the youth wader exchange program, the initial pair of waders can be purchased for $800. As children grow, their waders can be exchanged for a larger, like-new pair for $125. Waders must be in good condition and approved by Chên in order to be exchanged. If a child outgrows the youth sizes, they can make one additional exchange for an adult size. Children graduate the program when they turn 15.

“We’re introducing a new model for mentors taking kids out into the woods and helping parents with the costs of outfitting children with quality hunting gear,” Norris said. “Children are so impressionable. They want to be whoever you are, and they want to wear what dad is wearing and what grandpa is wearing. That’s what this program is all about.”

“This is a critical partnership and a demonstration of the common values of responsibility, accountability, and skill at arms,” said Craig Kozeniesky, USA Shooting Chief Executive Officer. “This collaboration strengthens the common goal that both USA Shooting’s youth and development programs and USCCA have on the importance of firearms safety.”

One of the critical focuses of this joint effort is to emphasize safe firearm storage and handling for families with children. Together, they will work to raise awareness of the resources available to parents, including the USCCA’s recently launched Children’s Firearm and Safety Fundamentals curriculum.

USA Shooting Athletes on their Path to Paris 2024

With only about a year to go until the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, USA Shooting athletes are hard at work training with the dream of representing America on one of the most important podiums around the world.

The opening ceremony for the Olympics Games takes place July 26, 2024, and the Paralympic Games kick off their ceremony August 28, 2024. Our pistol, rifle, shotgun, and Paralympic athletes are focused on securing quotas and winning medals in the crucial competitions leading up to the Games during their Path to Paris.

The road to Paris has been a unique one. Normally athletes have a full quad, or four years, in between the Games. This quad has been cut to three years due to the Tokyo Games being pushed back to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the challenges of training and competing during a global pandemic, USA Shooting athletes earned an impressive total of six Olympic medals in Tokyo. Vincent Hancock and Amber English earned gold in Men’s and Women’s Skeet. Will Shaner earned gold in Men’s 10m Air Rifle. Kayle Browning earned silver in Women’s Trap. Lucas Kozeniesky and Mary Tucker won silver in Mixed Team 10m Air Rifle and Brian Burrows and Madelyn Bernau earned bronze in Mixed Skeet Team.

The medals earned in Tokyo brought USA Shooting’s Olympic and Paralympic medal count to a whopping total of 121 with 58 gold, 32 silver, and 31 bronze. USA Shooting also currently holds the most shooting sports Olympic gold medals of any country.
