EDGEFIELD, S.C.— As part of its 2023 investment in wild turkey research, the NWTF is helping fund a new project led by Kansas State University; the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks; and the U.S. Geological Survey, Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

The nutrition research is a component of a more extensive overall demographic study across the state that seeks to update critical wild turkey data, including survival, nest success, hunter influence and more. 

The poult and hen forage ecology aspect of the study will occur in three different study sites in Kansas – including Trego, Lincoln and Osage counties – and will encompass areas inhabited by both Eastern and Rio Grande wild turkeys. 

Both subspecies of wild turkeys were accounted for in the state’s past brood surveys, which measure poults per hen, a ratio that wildlife managers use to measure the stability of a population. In 2021, the statewide poults-per-hen ratio in Kansas was 1.2, and in 2022, the ratio was 1.4. 

Anything below two poults per hen indicates a declining wild turkey population. 

Siblings Thomas and Kacie McGowan outperformed 50 other two-man teams to earn the first-place spot at the National Trophy Junior Team Match during the 2023 National Matches. Their names will be added to the prestigious Freedom’s Fire Trophy at Camp Perry.

Thomas, an experienced marksman who recently earned a spot on the U.S. National Rifle Team, provided an extra level of comfort for Kacie, who is an exceptional but less experienced competitor.

“It was a really great experience because Thomas is a really great shooter but also my brother, so it was less stressful for me. He has a calming personality,” Kacie said.

Adding their names to the Freedom’s Fire Trophy was an honor for both.

“Who doesn’t want their name on a national championship trophy?” Thomas said. “It reflects the hard work we put into it.”

As a guide and outfitter back in the day, we always suggested to customers to bring a deck of cards to play, while they were in camp. Rain, sleet and snow would slow down the hunting on some days or series of days and a good game would get you through white out conditions so you could get right back in the hunt with a positive mindset. I saw several clients bring in chess sets and I always enjoyed jumping into a game or two with them. Back in the day running an elk camp we used to have a tent for guides, a tent for eating and cooking and 2 tents for clients. We hunted from September through late November in a very wide variety of conditions. It was often, wet and cold and sometimes very snowy. Clients would come in to camp and we had all of the tents set up and we often had hooks or horizontal lines set up in the tent to hang gear from so that each person in camp could quickly and easily hang up wet gear to dry inside of a warm tent. Honestly, it was a complete mess but we did what we could.

The UTTy would have solved much of our stress if we could have had two of these for every person in camp hanging above or beside their cot. This is a handy little tool, it’s a strap with hooks on it and you can hang it anywhere. Gear goes on the hooks vertically and each person can have 4/6 hooks on each set to hang coats, gloves, pants, belt, hats, etc. Gear can now be off the ground, out of dirt and organized.

Currently day to day, I am using it to hang all of my hats in my closet and I may get one just to hang shoes off for the other side. I am also thinking of getting 2 more to hang hunting gear off of in my storage cabinet and an additional one to be in my suitcase for quick trips. The UTTy is so lightweight and portable, I can think of a ton of ways in which to utilize it. The idea came from a hockey family that had wet gear to hang up after every practice and game and looking across the sporting world, I can’t think of a sport in which it wouldn’t come in handy. September is filled with adventure, and I am here for it. From opening day of dove season, early season teal, archery openers across the country for elk, mule deer and pronghorn and small game seasons everywhere you look. It is also filled with outstanding opportunities for fishing, and we are looking forward to a busy fall on the boat and on the ground.

As an angler without a boat, I am usually relegated to fishing from shore, fishing on a friend’s boat, or hiring a guide. I remember the first time I got the chance to jump on someone’s big, new boat and fish the Chesapeake. I was about 14 years old, and I was excited to get out for a day on the water to catch bluefish. We took off out of Point Lookout, and by the time we got out to the target ship my shoes had left skid marks all over the deck of my friend’s father’s boat. I felt terrible. Of course, I helped scrub the deck free from all of those marks when we got back in to the dock that night. My friend’s father gave me a pretty good ribbing and said, “Son, if you ever want to be invited to come back on someone’s boat, you better find some good deck shoes.” For many years, I wore canvas deck shoes. and they just okay. They did not leave scuff marks, but they were just okay because once they get wet, they were uncomfortable to wear.

The National Wild Turkey Federation has been following reports that suggests overly broad language in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 has resulted in an interpretation that could impact federal funding for schools with hunter education, archery and shooting programs.

The language in question was intended by Congress to address arming educators and other school staff, but the U.S. Department of Education’s current interpretation could affect schools with these programs because they include training with a “deadly weapon.”

Senator John Cornyn and Senator Thom Tillis, two Republican senate leaders who sat on the committee that negotiated the language of the bipartisan bill, said the bill was a direct response to tragic mass shootings of children in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York, and the Department of Education’s interpretation is incorrect.

On July 10, the two senators penned a letter to Education Secretary Miquel Cardona stating that the Department’s interpretation of the language is not in line with Congress’ intent when they passed the law. The pair requests the Department follow the intent of the law and reinstate federal payments to the schools that have been impacted.

School-based hunter education and archery programs are vital to the outreach efforts of the hunter recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) efforts of state agencies and the NWTF.

Mesa Tactical’s telescoping stock adapter kits replace the factory buttstock with an adapter that accepts AR style collapsible stocks and pistol grips. LEO® Gen II stock adapters have a stock height that allows use of open or bead sights; High-tube® stock adapters feature an optional optics rail and are designed for AR height optic systems. Complete telescoping stock kits include a stock adapter, M4 carbine buttstock, Mesatac® Trego pistol grip and a push-button sling swivel. Hydraulic recoil starter kits include the stock adapter and a hydraulic recoil buffer, plus installation hardware (no stock or grip). No gunsmithing is required for installation. These hydraulic recoil buffers are exclusive to Mesa Tactical and will arrive to customers with or without the AR stock adapter.
