NEW Innovative Delta BIG 8™ Target

Delta-McKenzie announces the innovative new Big 8 target, the latest development from Delta’s Premium Backyard Series broadhead-compatible durable targets.

Big 8 features an innovative asymmetric hexagon shape, providing eight shooting faces. The asymmetric target design greatly increases usable life with any type of bow or crossbow.  Big 8’s design provides a larger shooting area versus conventional square targets, giving shooters confidence to stretch the distance without fear of missing the target.

Delta’s Big 8 also utilizes a new premium competition-grade “self-healing” foam, developed in conjunction with the ASA Pro 3D tournament circuit.  This new foam withstands even heavy tournament use, lasting up to 8-times longer, while maintaining a lower pull force for easier arrow or bolt extraction.

The Big 8 target is both field point and broadhead compatible, and is speed rated for all high-performance bows and crossbows.

Available in a highly portable 16” size, or the long-distance-effective 20” model.  Both models are self-supporting with no need for a target stand—just drop and shoot.

Taurus, manufacturer of premium handguns for defense, hunting, and sport shooting, wishes to congratulate the Taurus Shooting Team for an excellent performance at the recent 2022 USPSA Federal Ammunition Area 6 Championship. Wrap Your Arrow with the Bow Spider Arrow Wrap

Give your arrows a new look with Bow Spider’s custom design arrow wraps. The unique spider design on each wrap is available in either red or black and will draw attention and visibility to your arrows.

The Bow Spider wraps, made by State Wraps, are made in the USA and are 6 inches in length. They are carefully crafted from premium 2 mil cast vinyl, unlike conventional wraps that use a 4 mil “bumper sticker” material. The Mil references the thickness equal to 1/1000th of an inch. The Bow Spider wrap by State Wraps is half the thickness of conventional wraps and half the weight. Additionally, because the Bow Spider wrap uses a premium cast vinyl, the adhesive back allows air bubbles to escape as the wrap is applied. This results in better adhesion and performance than conventional wraps. These wraps are quality all the way around.

Whether you are looking for a flashier look to your arrows, increased visibility, easier fletching or all of the above, the Bow Spider Arrow Wraps are your answer. They are available exclusively online at  www.bowspider.com. A dozen have a suggested retail price of $14.95.

NRA Appeals District Court’s Erroneous National Wildlife Refuge Decision

Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association on April 15 joined with Safari Club International, Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to appeal an erroneous decision of the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana denying the pro-hunting organizations’ efforts to intervene in and defend the expansion of hunting opportunities on federal lands.

In Center for Biological Diversity v. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the plaintiff challenged a 2020 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulation, that expanded hunting and fishing opportunities on almost 100 National Wildlife Refuges around the country.  The plaintiff wrongly asserts that this expanded hunting and fishing threatens Endangered Species Act-listed species and challenges the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle on National Wildlife Refuges.  The pro-hunting organizations seek to defend the 2020 regulation, which is consistent with the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act’s directive to prioritize hunting and fishing on refuges.

In the appeal, the hunting organizations will demonstrate that the district court erred in ruling that hunter advocacy organizations do not have a legal interest in maintaining a rule that expanded hunting access. NRA, along with the adjoining groups, are leading hunter advocacy organizations and submitted multiple declarations of members who want to take advantage of expanded hunting and fishing opportunities provided in the 2020 rule.

“The NRA has always fought to ensure America’s sportsmen and women have ample access to this country’s great outdoors, and the district court’s ruling deprives them of the opportunity to be heard in this case,” said Amy Hunter, NRA spokeswoman. “On behalf of our five million members, we urge the appellate court to reverse this ruling.”

Welter Claims Two Rifle Wins at April Camp Perry GSMM Event

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – On April 3, 2022, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) hosted its first Camp Perry rifle match of the season. The match was well attended, with over 30 individuals competing in the featured As-Issued Garand, Springfield, Vintage and Modern Military rifle competitions (known as the GSMM). The event was held on Camp Perry’s Petrarca Range, which houses a line of CMP outdoor electronic targets.

Leading both the Vintage and Modern Military matches in April was Andy Welter, 58, of Westerville, Ohio. The match was his third GSMM at Camp Perry after firing two in 2021. He had previously held the high score in the Springfield group and ranked within the top four highest participants in each of his other fired GSMM categories – finally reaching wins in 2022.

The GSMM Matches at Petrarca are enjoyed by seasoned competitors as well as those new to the sport.

Long-time Camp Perry competitor and past leader Craig Downing, 57, of Strongsville, Ohio, overtook the Garand event, as Michael Washington, 48, of Canton, Ohio, was the high scoring participant of the Springfield Match.

Competitors of all skill levels are welcome to attend the recreational GSMM events. The encouraging environment of these matches allows new marksmen to grasp fundamental match procedures while also challenging seasoned athletes through friendly competition. Knowledgeable CMP staff members are on hand at all events to ensure safety on the firing as well as to answer questions.

The early spring temps of Ohio were frigid, but it didn’t scare away the competitors on the line.

Towering Reclaimed Rifle Statues Now On Display at CMP Facilities

As part of its federal charter, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is provided surplus U.S. Army rifles from past conflicts, like the World War II M1 Garand, that are sold to qualified purchasers from around the country. The rifles are assembled from a stock of parts that are sorted and quality inspected, with the excess left sitting without purpose within CMP’s warehouse – until now.

In 2015, the CMP was searching for something productive and meaningful to do with all the company’s housed non-reclaimable M1 Garand parts. After some thought, the CMP Board approved the construction of a competitor statue composed of these scrap materials, which were welded by the Army for drill rifle use prior to CMP receiving them.

“The idea was to place a statue outside of the CMP South Competition Center in Alabama, to give the kids something to take a picture in front of after competition,” said CMP’s Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM), Mark Johnson. “The parts have significant historical value, and the statues will honor that history while representing the competitor.”

The 11-foot figures feature hundreds of authentic M1 Garand parts.

The project expanded to not only include the CMP’s South Competition Center in Anniston but also its 500-acre outdoor Talladega Marksmanship Park, also in Alabama, and the CMP Headquarters located at the Camp Perry National Guard Facility in northern Ohio.

The search for the individual who would construct the statues was simple – Jerry Antolik. An artist for over 50 years, Antolik has created several paintings that are currently on display at CMP’s offices and ranges, including the famous mural wall within Camp Perry’s Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center air gun range.

Inanimate objects may also possess MANA.

“We honored the Polynesian worldview of MANA, by launching the second part of this Warrior Life designer collection,” said Simon Khiabani, owner and founder of SK Customs. “To have MANA implies influence, authority and efficacy and an ability to perform in a given situation. A Colt 1911 embodies this spirit, even as an inanimate object.”

Perfect Blackened Fish Begins with Smith’s

High-Precision Knives Yield Delectable Results

Harvesting fresh fish for the table remains a central part of the angling experience. The classic Friday fish fry – with walleye as the featured guest – remains a time-honored tradition in the upper Midwest. The striped bass is premium table fare along the Atlantic coast, often competing with steamed blue crabs for dinner table supremacy. From Oregon’s rocky coast to Alaska’s fjord’s, fresh-from-the-sea salmon is a staple that traces its roots to the earliest North American inhabitants. Transcending these regional options is a single unifying theme – a preparation technique – that applies to nearly every fish imaginable and yields superlative responses from those who sample it. Indeed, if you haven’t tried blackened fish, you’re missing out.

“I can blacken just about any fish you might imagine,” asserts Meyer. “I lean toward the fish we have in abundance in northern Wisconsin, like walleye, pike and panfish – but we’ve enjoyed some great meals of blacked redfish from Louisiana, halibut and salmon from Alaska, and steelhead from the Great Lakes. I will blacken the entire fillet as one piece with smaller fish, like a nice eater-sized walleye or crappie. If I’m working with a larger fish, like a full-sized salmon fillet, I will prepare individual portions between four and six inches long. The thickness of the portion determines how long I will blacken each side. For example, for relatively thin crappies, I will blacken that fish for 90 seconds on each side, while walleye fillets might need three minutes before I flip them. A thick fillet from an Alaskan salmon or halibut likely reaches closer to four minutes per side; remember that with a salmon or trout, you can also watch the fillet’s color change to help you gauge if it is fully cooked.”

Meyer dredges the fillets with olive or grapeseed oil, and then liberally applies his favorite blackening spices – a custom blend from KFRED Kajun Seasoning but any robust, flavorful blackening mixture is also a good choice. Meyer then cranks up the heat, using the base of an LP-fueled turkey cooker to provide the fire needed to transform fresh fillets into a delectable blackened meal. An open fire crackling along the rocky shores of your favorite lake is an equally suitable heat source. He pre-heats the pan – either a seasoned cast iron pan or a premium carbon-steel farmhouse skillet – and then adds the fish, seasoned-side down. Once the fillets are in place and the aroma of blacked fish begins to fill the air, Meyer seasons the top sides of each fillet, flipping each after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed. “I monitor the time that I blacken each side carefully using the timer on my phone,” cautions Meyer. “While the blackened outsides of the fillets will be seared and have a firm texture, I want to avoid overcooking and drying out the interior. You can always put the fillets back on for another 30 or 60-seconds if they’re not done enough in the middle, but you can’t rescue fish that is dry as shoe leather throughout.”

Gobbler Report 2022: Latest Info From the Field Before Hunting Season Opens April 16

This Saturday, April 16, will be opening day for the regular spring turkey hunting  season in all of Oklahoma. The season will close May 16. A new bag limit is in effect this spring, allowing each hunter to harvest one tom only.

Turkey populations have declined the past several years in western Oklahoma, and biologists have cited unfavorable weather conditions as part of the reason. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has begun a multi-million-dollar research project to examine what might be causing declines in turkey populations.

By delaying the opening of turkey season for the bulk of the state, wildlife biologists are hoping that less disturbance in the woods in early April will allow better nesting conditions and hopefully increase nesting success.

Finally, hunters who normally plan to hunt in the western and southwestern parts of the state might wish to consider going to other regions where turkey numbers have declined less.

Turkey season will occur as usual on private lands, ODWC-owned and -managed areas, and Oklahoma Land Access Program lands. However, hunters need to make themselves aware of any public land restrictions listed under the Special Area Regulations section in the Oklahoma Fishing and Hunting Regulations. By region, here are some current insights for turkey hunters this spring.

Cameron, Walrath Lead 2022 CMP Regional Air Rifle Championship

The results are in for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Three-Position Regional Air Rifle Championship! The event was held at CMP’s own air gun competition centers in Ohio and Alabama, March 31-April 2, as well as in Utah using CMP’s mobile electronic range, assembled April 7-9.

The annual, national-level competition series is designed for junior air rifle marksmen involved in 4-H, Scouts, American Legion, club or JROTC sporter and precision air rifle programs. Athletes begin with a postal match, followed by regional and national events. During the match, athletes fire from three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. Qualification scores are recorded each day, with the eight highest scoring marksmen from each discipline participating in a final on the firing line.

Maya Cameron led the sporter class out of all sporter athletes from each location.

The top three teams and top eight individuals were recognized with awards at each location. Third place individuals received $300 from the CMP, while second and first earned $400 and $500, respectively. Teams placing at each location were also recognized and presented with monetary awards: $800 for third, $1,200 for second and $1,500 for third.

Leading over all locations combined in the sporter class was last year’s Junior Olympic national champion Maya Cameron, 18, of Nation Ford High School, South Carolina, with an aggregate score of 1125-45X. Following Cameron was Charles Bratton, 17, of Clover High School, South Carolina, with a score of 1117-40X, as Nanchaya Bailey, 16, of Daniel Boone High School, Tennessee, took third with a score of 1105-32X.

Emme Walrath led overall in the precision competition and fired a new national record score.

Emme Walrath, 16, of the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club in Michigan, cleaned both the prone and kneeling stages to gather an overall score of 1195-101X and claim the top spot in the precision class. During her performance, Walrath fired a new Age Group II individual national record for her score of 599-51X. Griffin Lake, 16, of the Ontelaunee Junior Rifle Team of Pennsylvania, trailed closely behind Walrath in second with a score of 1191-97X, while the 2022 JROTC National Three-Position air rifle precision champion, Parker Haydin, 18, of Granbury High School, Texas, earned the overall third place position with a score of 1190-101X.

3L Element Proof Rain Gear Overdelivers on Comfort & Performance

Waterproof, breathable, quiet and built to last a lifetime. The Pnuma Outdoors 3L Element Proof Rain Jacket and Pants deliver superior performance for hunters who find themselves pursuing game in the harshest environments.

The 3L Element Proof Rain Pants and Jacket have been carefully designed and built by hunters, for hunters. Designed to be the quietest outer shell available in a rain suit, Pnuma built the 3-layer (3L) technology from the ground up, or in this case, the high performance, 4-way stretch, waterproof/breathable membrane. The fabric has a 100% polyester interlock that keeps water at bay, then a 3M C4 DWR coating is added to take the waterproofing a step further. The result is a waterproof rating of 20,000mm and a MVP breathability rating of 15,000 g/m2/24h, which means hunters will stay dry, while not overheating.

The innovation didn’t end with the 3L Element Proof fabric however. The quiet, comfortable, breathable 4-way stretch jacket and pants have been equipped with full Aquaguard zippers, offering a lifetime of water protection, while the high-friction areas are protected by Pnuma’s Pnumaguard anti-abrasion overlays.

Pnuma’s 3L Element Proof Rain Jacket features a 3-piece hood, with an integrated visor to keep the rain out and cover a brimmed hat. Pit zips are easily accessible when the need arises to dump heat after a long hike to your tree stand or backcountry hunting spot. The 3L Element Proof Rain Pants are equipped with three-quarter length Aquaguard zippers on each leg, making them easy to don when caught in an unexpected rainstorm while out in the field. Lightweight and packable, the 3L Element Proof Rain Pants and Jacket weigh in at 17.6 oz and 20.8 oz respectively (based on size large garments).

CAZA Camo Tech– The proprietary Pnuma CAZA Camo pattern was designed to incorporate macro shape disruption that utilizes large regions of light and dark patterns to break up and distort the human shape at long distances. Once you’ve closed the distance, or your target buck finally comes close to your stand, the CAZA micro texture disruption becomes integral to hiding the human shape. Utilizing small- to medium-sized elements helps hunters blend into the environment in which they are hunting. Lastly, depth and focal confusion is achieved by the CAZA pattern’s ability to break up the human outline, while creating a sense of depth, effectively fooling the depth perception and distorting the peripheral vision of wildlife.

Team Winchester’s Dania Vizzi and Jake Wallace Capture Gold at World Cup in Peru

The World Cup tournaments of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) are a qualification path to participation in the Olympic shooting events.  And the most recent World Cup in Lima, Peru (March 27-April 7), saw the U.S. topping the medal count, with Team Winchester bringing home its share of the gold.

With the support of legendary AA® shotshells, two of Team Winchester’s best, Dania Vizzi and Casey “Jake” Wallace, ascended to the center of the podiums for their matches.

Dania Vizzi put in a stellar performance medaling in gold twice.  First, she won women’s skeet over a fellow American shooter, by a single target.  Then she and her women’s team skeet squad went on to defeat the Italian team decisively in the final. Vizzi notched two of Team USA’s four recorded gold medals in Lima, Peru. Men’s team trap sent Wallace and his squad into a shootout with always-formidable Spain, where they won the gold by a single target.

“We at Winchester are extremely proud of Dania and Jake for their victories in Lima, and the performance of Team Winchester this World Cup season,” said Matt Campbell, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Winchester Ammunition.  “It is extremely impressive to watch Team Winchester members compete against the world’s best sport shooters and come out on top.”
