Ducks Unlimited celebrates Earth Day 2022

Friday, April 22, is the 52nd annual celebration of Earth Day

Ducks Unlimited (DU) encourages you to celebrate Earth Day by getting outdoors and experiencing the natural wonders around us. Earth Day 2022 is April 22, and this year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet.”

DU has invested in our planet since its founding in 1937 because DU conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These positive impacts on our natural ecosystems also benefit people and communities through cleaner water and air, improved flood control, carbon storage, recreational opportunities and climate regulation.

“In 2021, Team DU celebrated a monumental conservation milestone by restoring or protecting more than 15 million acres of habitat in North America since its founding,” said DU Chief Conservation Officer Karen Waldrop. “Thanks to the commitment of DU’s volunteers, members, partners and staff, we invest in our planet every day.”

Here is some information on just a few of the places across North America where Ducks Unlimited is investing in our planet.

Guard Your Yard with Skeeter Hawk

As the weather gets warmer, families will be spending more and more time outside. While that means fun and playing outdoors, it also means having to contend with various pests, including mosquitoes.

What is needed is a line of defense against these insects, a zone of protection that will keep them away when families, kids, and pets are out and about.

Skeeter Hawk can provide homeowners with the protection needed to keep the whole family happy and bug-bite free in the great outdoors with their line of wearable mosquito repellents that utilizes all-natural essential oils rather than smelly chemicals.

For example, the Skeeter Hawk Wearable Mosquito Carabiner, a stainless-steel carabiner clip featuring a proprietary blend of essential oils naturally repels mosquitoes and other flying insects. It has a reflective logo and lettering for increased visibility while it quickly attaches to a backpack or belt loop. The carabiner comes with two replacement tabs with a life of 30 days each.

For more on-the-go protection, go with the Skeeter Hawk Wearable Mosquito Wristband, which also repels insects using all-natural essential oils. The hook-and-loop closure provides users with a custom fit, along with the reflective logo and lettering for increased visibility. The wristband also comes with two replacement 30-day repellent tabs.

NWTF Helps Increase Turkey Hunting Access in Beaver State

The NWTF Oregon State Chapter recently helped the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife increase public turkey hunting access on about 1,800 private acres in the western part of the state, near Corvallis.

One of the reasons new hunters say they give up hunting is they do not have enough places to go afield. Increasing public hunting access is therefore integral to the NWTF’s mission to conserve the wild turkey and preserve our hunting heritage.

From a national level, to a local and state chapter level, the NWTF works with agencies, nongovernmental organizations, private landowners and policy makers to increase available land for public hunting. Access projects can range from buying land, leasing land annually from private landowners, advocating for policy that increases opportunities for the sporting community or delivering needed conservation so a landscape can support hunting.

(Land recently enrolled into ODFW’s Hunt by Reservation Program. Photo Credit: ODFW)

In a state where a current petition exists to outlaw all hunting, it has become more important than ever to increase hunting access and retain hunters.

The recent access project near Corvallis is part of the ODFW’s Hunt by Reservation Program. The program incentivizes private landowners to enroll their properties into the program, which opens them up to public hunting access, through reservation. To hunt a property enrolled in the program, hunters use an online scheduling platform that reserves a date and time for them to hunt.

Tear Through Cover with Gamakatsu’s G-Power Flip & Punch Hook

With help from late and great Aaron Martens’ brilliant insight, Gamakatsu developed the G-Power Flip & Punch Hook. A step up from the G-Finesse Heavy Cover Hook, the newly designed heavy style is the ultimate in-between hook for heavy to super heavy cover.

The TGW (Tournament Grade Wire) hook, paired with its welded eye, make this hook the strongest in Gamakatsu’s G-Series lineup. When using larger baits and weights for punching through grass mats and flipping into heavy timber, anglers need a versatile hook in all types of cover and can withstand extreme conditions. “Gamakatsu nailed it with the G-Power Hook,” said Jeff Roberts, Gamakatsu sales manager.

Martens thought of everything regarding the G-Power Flip & Punch Hook. This hook has a shortened point length providing less hook exposure in heavy cover; however, it leaves an ample amount of the hook exposed to penetrate through the biggest bass mouths. Reeling in a five-pound bass is a task, but when adding two pounds of weeds to it, the odds of losing that fish increase.

Gamakatsu’s new G-Power Flip & Punch Hook comes in various sizes 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 and is complemented by the Nano Smooth Coating finish ensuring this hook maintains Gamakastu’s reputation as the sharpest hook in the boat.

Upping the Odds with Multiple Rods – Millennium Marine Rod Tree and Rod Pod

Fishing with multiple rods out from a boat shouldn’t be complicated; using the right rod holders makes it easy. Whether it’s trolling for walleye along rocky ledges and underwater weed beds or pulling lures deep for big lake trout, quality rod holders are a critical piece of equipment for success. Utilizing a fully adjustable rod holder, built using quality components and premium construction, the Millennium Marine Spyderlok Rod Pod and Millennium Marine Spyderlok Rod Tree provide anglers with a rock-solid platform that’s built to fish with no fuss.

Constructed utilizing anodized low-glare finished aluminum and stainless steel hardware, the Spyderlok Rod Pod and Rod Tree are unfazed by saltwater corrosion, rust, and UV rays. Millennium Marine’s patented Spyderlok technology ensures precise, secure locking angles for its fully adjustable rod holders. This critical feature provides anglers with the security they need to put baits where they belong confidently. Spyderlok rod holder tubes are designed to be oversized, allowing for easy rod removal when a lunker strikes. Heavy rubber boots cover metallic edges on the Spyderlok rod holders, protecting rod handles and fishing reels from damage. A specialized ridge within the rod holder tube prevents fishing rods from turning in the holder, keeping the fishing line pulling against the eyelets, a critical detail for successful trolling and hook sets. The Spyderlok Rod Tree mounts to either the Millennium Marine R-101 base plate or TS series track system easily with no tools required.

Keeping rods secure and lines tangle-free is top of mind when presenting multiple fishing rods under a variety of fishing opportunities and techniques. Millennium Marine Spyderlok Rod Tree and Spyderlok Rod Pod are just the ticket for drifting baits off the bottom for catfish or trolling for saltwater predators.

One-year warranty. MSRP for the Spyderlok Rod Tree is $229.99, and the Spyderlok Rod Pod is $106.99. More information is available at www.millenniummarine.com.

KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT THE RIGHT BEAR SPRAY TO USE IN BEAR COUNTRY

1.Why use bear spray?  According to a Bio One study, while state and national parks recommend all backcountry recreationalists carry bear spray, yet there are some that chose to enter bear country without protection.

Nance’s first rule for any type of personal safety is to always put more distance between yourself and the threat.  In the case of encountering a bear, he recommends FRONTIERSMAN Bear Spray.  “When in bear country, there’s almost nothing more important than being prepared to protect yourself.  Bears are top of the food chain in North America, can run up to 40 mph and can cover 50 feet in 1 second. So, you certainly want as much distance between yourself and a charging bear as possible.”

2. Find a bear spray that you can trust.  “When preparing for your next adventure where bears can be present, you’ll want to pack a bear spray you know you can rely on,” says Nance.  “FRONTIERSMAN Bear Spray products provide the strongest formula permitted by the EPA while offering maximum range and fastest deployment.”

The high emission system found in the 9.2 oz FRONTIERSMAN Bear Spray delivers a massive protective barrier of 1.84 oz of spray per second, up to 40% more than other brands.  FRONTIERSMAN’s maximum 35-foot (10.6 m) range provides greater protection allowing for the greatest distance between you and a bear.

FRONTIERSMAN Bear Spray, like all other SABRE pepper sprays, guarantees its maximum strength formula. According to an independent study conducted by the University of Utah, variability rates in the concentration of active ingredients in pepper sprays have been shown to be only 70% effective, meaning that all other pepper spray brands can have a 30% failure rate.   With an industry exclusive High Performance Liquid Chromatography laboratory, only SABRE guarantees its maximum strength formulation in every canister helping provide certainty and reliability when you need it most.FRONTIERSMAN Bear Spray delivers the maximum strength of capsaicinoids (2%) allowed by the EPA but still ensures its efficacy and safety for the bear.  Humane and effective, the effects are temporary and provide the opportunity to get to safety.  FRONTIERSMAN has been field tested and proven effective against charging bears by both the Elmendorf Air Force Base (Elmendorf, AK) and Brown Bear Resources (Missoula, MT).

3. Be prepared and confident using bear spray if called upon.

Work at Summit, Wagon Train affecting angler, boater access

Aquatic Habitat improvement projects are underway at Summit Lake and Wagon Train Lake in eastern Nebraska that affect angler and boater access.

Summit Lake’s water level is 8 feet below normal. Removal of sediment from the lake’s south basin is almost complete; construction will move to the west sediment basin.

The Summit project is nearly 50% complete, but boaters can expect limited access for watercraft launching this season until the water level returns to normal.

Construction at Wagon Train has concentrated on preparation of the basin where sediment will be stored after removal.

The water level currently is down 4 feet. There are plans to continue to lower the water level before construction in the lake basin and sediment dikes begins. Anglers and boaters can expect limited access this season.

Among the fishing-related topics to browse are:

Interactive maps – Click on Maps at the top of OutdoorNebraska.org to find lake depths in the lake contour map (as well as maps you can download and print), discover where boat ramps are located along the Missouri River, locate public fishing areas, and browse public access sites in the Open Fields and Waters Program.Fish identification – If you want to learn more about Nebraska’s fish species, download the Fish Key: A Guide to the Most Commonly Caught Fish in Nebraska.Fishing events – Find a list of Community Fishing Nights, fishing tournaments and any upcoming public informational meetings.Fish stocking – Each year, millions of fish are stocked in Nebraska to enhance fishing opportunities. Explore the stocking database to see the many species stocked in hundreds of waters.Beginner fishing – Read Going Fishing, a basic guide that covers everything you need to know to get started fishing. Topics include equipment, tackle, casting, knot tying, tips for targeting species you can catch from shore and much more.

Aside from the Fishing Guide, which include regulations, and the Fishing Forecast, which highlights the best places to catch the biggest and most fish of several species, Game and Parks offers even more resources through its website. Discover videos, fish sampling reports, and area-specific publications on fishing in the Omaha metro area, the Sandhills, along the Interstate 80 corridor, and Nebraska’s trout streams.

Mobile fishing permits may be purchased from and displayed on a smartphone or tablet. Like a paper permit, the angler must display the mobile permit upon request by a conservation officer. Save the image of the permit on the device by taking a screenshot.

Recovering America’s Wildlife Act: The Most Important Conservation Legislation in a Generation Advances to the Senate with Resounding Bi-Partisan Support

Johnny Morris and the Bass Pro Shops family of outdoor companies are proud to stand alongside America’s sportsmen to ensure the future of the resources upon which we all depend.

Today we rise together in celebration of the fact that the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, the most impactful piece of conservation legislation of the past 50 years, passed through the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee last week with a vote of 15-1. It builds on the conservation foundation that has served our country so admirably for the past 85 years. It will fundamentally improve management of natural resources and create a dedicated funding vehicle to sustainably empower conservation across the country for generations.

Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops and noted conservationist, co-chaired the Blue Ribbon Panel that led to the Act’s formulation. We now stand alongside hunters and anglers, the backbone of American conservation, to applaud the bi-partisan support the Act is receiving in the House and Senate.

Beyond codifying how conservation is funded in America for the next 50 years — creating a dedicated $1.4 billion annually (without imposing any new taxes) — the Act showcases the value of wild places and the sporting heritage on a truly national stage. The near-universal support for the bill also illustrates the unifying power of nature and the great outdoors. According to a recent national poll from Data for Progress, some 91 percent of Americans support conservation, and 84 percent of those polled support the bill.

This broad base of support for the future of wildlife in America crosses not only political lines but transcends race, age, gender and socio-economic backgrounds as well. As important as this legislation is for sportsmen, clean air and unpolluted water are good for every American.

Mule Deer Foundation Receives $383,358 through RESTORE Colorado Grant for Habitat Restoration Projects

The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) has received a $383,358 grant for habitat restoration projects through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s RESTORE Colorado program. The project funding was announced today during the Colorado Partners in the Outdoors conference in Vail. MDF will be working in cooperation with the Intermountain West Joint Venture (IWJV), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), and other partners to restore habitat for mule deer, sage grouse, and other wildlife in sagebrush rangelands through the work of Northwest Colorado Sagebrush Habitat Partnership Coordinator, Jamie Nogle. MDF and its partners will leverage the RESTORE grant with additional funds for a total impact of more than $775,000 for projects including: land restoration and improved management on rangelands impacted by the 139,000-acre Pine Gulch fire; invasive weed treatment; conifer removal; fencing removal and modification; improved land management practices; and mesic meadow restoration projects.

“Western Colorado supports some of the largest mule deer herds in the state and is often called Colorado’s ‘mule deer factory’,” said MDF President/CEO Joel Pedersen. “Much of the proposed project area is part of the Book Cliffs priority big game corridor/winter range which is home to 7,500 mule deer and 5,000 elk. Improving the habitat in this part of the state will provide tremendous benefits to big game, sage grouse, and countless other species that depend on the region’s sagebrush rangelands.”

The three-million-acre focal area includes important sagebrush and shrub dominated rangelands that are highly productive habitat for elk, mule deer, sage grouse, and numerous other sagebrush obligate species. Partners such as CPW and USFWS have highlighted the need for cross-agency, partner coordination and planning for cumulative and landscape-scale conservation efforts to occur. MDF’s Nogle, who is based out of the BLM Grand Junction Field Office, will be working with BLM, IWJV, CPW, and other partners to identify and prioritize habitat and range improvement projects within the focal area that will benefit habitat for both big game and sage grouse. RESTORE Colorado funding will support her efforts to implement high priority projects on public and private lands to support the state’s West Slope Mule Deer Strategy, Secretarial Order 3362 state action plan, and the Colorado Statewide Greater Sage-grouse Plan.

“This funding will be leveraged with partner dollars to increase habitat connectivity, provide forage on critical big game winter range, and improve habitat for sage grouse and other sagebrush obligates,” said Nogle.  “We have a unique opportunity through my shared position and a RESTORE Colorado grant to coordinate cross-boundary, landscape-level wildlife habitat improvements where they are needed most in Northwest Colorado.”

About MDF
The Mule Deer Foundation is the only conservation group in North America dedicated to restoring, improving and protecting mule deer and black-tailed deer and their habitat, with a focus on science and program efficiency. Remington Opens Sporting Clays Course, Hosts Inaugural Spring League

Remington Ammunition is excited to announce the opening of the Remington Gun Club to the public. Complete with a brand-new 13 station sporting clays course, the inaugural spring sporting clays league is now underway.

Only steps away from Remington’s historic ammunition factory in Lonoke, Arkansas, Big Green has recently expanded the Gun Club with a new 13-station sporting clays course and has begun construction on an additional 12-station north course as well.

Established in 1978, but closed by previous Remington company ownership, Big Green’s new owners have re-opened the gates of the club to again welcome both novice and competitive shooters from across the country. A longtime destination for trap and skeet shooters, the club has added the state’s only sporting clays course open to the public. The new addition was made possible with the support of the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation and the MidwayUSA Foundation.

In addition to the re-opening of the Gun Club, Remington is hosting their first spring Sporting Clays League. With two divisions- 17 and younger and 18 and older- the league opened on April 6th and will continue through May 22nd. This six week, 300 target league has weekly ammo winners, and added cash prizes.

“Everyone at Remington is really excited to see some action on this course and put some Remington lead down range,” said Joel Hodgdon, Remington’s Director of Marketing. “This is a remarkable facility. We have a ton of exciting events and tournaments planned for Remington fans and pros to get out here and break some clays.”

Speer Ammunition Adds New 30 Super Carry to Its Gold Dot Product Line

Speer Ammunition announces the addition of the new 30 Super Carry cartridge to its Gold Dot Personal Protection product family. Hailed as one of the biggest handgun cartridge introductions in decades, the new Gold Dot 30 Super Carry from Speer continues to bolster the ammunition options for this new platform. Check with your local ammo store for availability.

The Gold Dot 30 Super Carry has the power of a 9mm Luger with more magazine capacity. The combination of performance and smaller-diameter sized .313-inch diameter projectile allow the Federal Ammunition engineered cartridge to deliver 9mm Luger muzzle velocity, with terminal performance that far exceeds that of 380 Auto.

“We are excited to add this new cartridge to the line of the No. 1 bullet choice of law enforcement,” said Jesse Whiteside, Federal’s Senior Director of Product Management. “The new 30 Super Carry option packs all of the functional features that law enforcement and concealed carry users have trusted in a personal protection round. The Uni-Cor bonded Gold Dot Bullet is designed for better weight retention, deep penetration, and exceptional expansion. It’s clear to see why the line of Gold Dot ammunition continues to be so popular.”

With the continued growth and popularity of concealed carry firearms, the 30 Super Carry comes into the market as an ideal choice for everyday carry. The cartridge greatly outperforms the 380 Auto while offering the same muzzle energy as the 9mm Luger, but with more magazine capacity. With this newly designed cartridge, users don’t have to choose a smaller firearm with reduced bullet performance or a larger firearm with more magazine capacity. The 30 Super Carry combines the best of performance and size.

“What I think shooters will like about the Gold Dot 30 Super Carry is that they get more performance from their everyday firearm without having to step up to a larger platform,” continued Whiteside. “With the 30 Super Carry, a magazine the size of a standard 10-round 9mm Luger will be able to carry 12 to 13 rounds of 30 Super Carry. Additional rounds can make a big difference in a real-world self-defense scenario.”
