HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOUR SPORTING DOG DRINK?

Most sporting dog owners and handlers know how to calculate daily amounts of food, but is there a way to determine how much water your dog should drink? According to Eukanuba’s Pet Health and Nutrition Center’s Director, Dr. Jill Cline, there is.

“In a 2005 summary of working dogs, it was stated that while dogs can recover from the loss of most of their fat and half of their muscle, a loss of more than 10% of a dog’s body water stores can result in death1,” Dr. Cline said. That statement alone should have handlers asking, “how much water does my dog require?” Dr. Cline continues with, “daily water losses for a 44 lb. dog can range from 0.5 -1.5 US gallons depending upon activity and environmental setting2.” Half a gallon to a gallon and a half is a wide range, especially considering that an English pointer running in hot, Montana fields is different from a Labrador’s work in marshes and rivers.

Cut water with dogs to help them cool down

Dr. Cline says, “there is another way to determine a dog’s recommended daily water intake. This reliable method calculates minimum water intake through food consumption. Simply multiply the number of cups of dry food offered daily by 3 cups. So, two cups of food means the dog should drink 6 cups of water, and so on. Keep in mind that this target is the minimum amount of water your dog should be drinking daily when working under adverse conditions. That amount or more will help reduce the risk of dehydration but may not prevent it.”

A dog’s fitness level plays an important role in proper hydration. “I can’t over emphasize the importance of regular, pre-season conditioning,” Cline said. “To avoid injury, exercise programs for sedentary dogs should always begin slowly and increase as the dog becomes more fit. Second, proper feeding creates healthy dogs, and healthy dogs have an easier time working in the heat. Feeding dogs a healthy diet gives them strong muscles, healthy joints, and energy to run hard. Dogs that are more fit are more resistant to dehydration and heat stroke than those that are not in shape.”

When running in hot, humid conditions, pre-hunt hydration is an option. “A strategy is to pre-hydrate your dog prior to a hunt,” Cline said. “Instead of feeding your dog dry kibble for his morning meal, add water to the food. Measure out water in a 1:1 ratio and feed immediately so the kibble doesn’t soak up the water. Pre-hydration by adding water to dry food can significantly help improve your dog’s water intake, and likely performance.

5 Guns Every Beginner Should Own

Deciding to purchase your first firearm may be daunting to individuals who don’t have as much experience as others. In a world saturated with firearm manufacturers and dozens of various models, finding the right fit for you can be difficult. Many people might ask, “What is a good gun for beginners?”

To make it easy on any budding firearm enthusiasts, here’s a list of the top five guns that would be perfect in the hands of any beginners. There’s a large variety of shotguns, rifles, pistols, and firearm accessories to choose from, and finding a blend of each of these categories is ideal for getting the best out of the firearm market.

Toros Coppola T4 12 Gauge Shotgun

The Toros Coppola T4 12 gauge shotgun is the perfect addition to a new firearm collection. The gas-operated, semi-automatic firing system allows the user to nail follow-up shots quickly and precisely without any need to rack the slide. This 12 gauge shotgun is modeled after the United States Marine Corps. The M4 shotgun was used to breach doors and in self-defense situations for decades. Capable of holding five shells in the magazine tube with one in the chamber, this shotgun allows for six rounds of twelve gauge to be shot as quickly as the shooter pulls the trigger. Perfect for shooting skeet or home defense, the Toros Coppola T4 12 gauge shotgun is the ideal first shotgun for any beginner to pick up.

22 Semi-Auto .22 LR 6 5/8 BBL

The semi-auto pistol has been created with simplicity in mind. This beautiful gun features a blued steel finish reminiscent of the firearms used over the last century. Walnut grips are this gun’s finishing touch, manufactured perfectly for target shooting. The 22 semi-auto pistol fires one of the smallest rounds readily available today, making it ideal for plinking and getting used to shooting a gun. The semi-auto pistol is everything the average beginner needs with simple mechanisms, including a button magazine release and adjustable rear sight. This firearm practically begs to be shot at some cans sitting on the fence; any beginner should have a blast doing so without any issue.

STD-15 Model 16721 Black 5.56 NATO, 16″ Barrel

The STD-15 rifle is patterned after the iconic AR-15 design. This makes it a familiar platform for anyone who has ever seen an AR-15. A flat-firing projectile makes light work of any long-range precision shooting. The STD-15 rifle features a 16-inch barrel that is neither the longest nor the shortest option. And allows the gun to be easily maneuvered while still maintaining a long enough barrel for accurately placed shots, making it among the best guns for beginners. However, a 12.5-inch, 14.5, 16.5, and 20-inch barrel is also available to meet all personal preferences.

Stay Comfortably Hidden this Season Millenniums Q200 Buck Hut Shooting House

Comfort and concealment matter while waiting for that buck of your dreams. The ability to stay put for many hours across all types of weather usually increases your odds as you stake out deer travel zones, food plots, farm fields and the like. It’s one reason many property owners and land managers erect wooden “box blinds” in all shapes and sizes in strategic locations around a hunting area.

These homemade blinds are increasingly expensive given the cost of materials today, such as pressure-treated lumber and plywood. And they’re permanent, usually left to stand until they deteriorate to the ground, long after the productivity of that specific hunting area has dwindled.

The comfort and concealment of those box blinds are now available in a more adaptable configuration with the Millennium Buck Hut Shooting House. This roomy, heavy-duty soft-shell blind attaches to the top of a hefty, powder-coated, cross-braced steel frame. The blind is 7 ft., 4 in. wide, 4 ft. deep, and 7 ft. high, enabling standing shots and providing ample room for two hunters. The interior is configured to allow up to two Millennium 360 Revolution seats and many other comfortable seating options. A removable platform pad is at your feet.

A black interior increases concealment, lessening the chances game will spot movement inside the blind. The adjustable windows are also black, configurable to your preferred style of hunting, whether rifle, crossbow, or vertical bow. They also come with rigid, adjustable height shooting rests to facilitate a quality shot at the chosen moment.

The uneven ground at the selected prime hunting location isn’t a showstopper. The tower has two adjustable legs to assist in getting the blind positioned perfectly. Once in place, secure it using the included stabilizing anchoring kit.

Be Sure to Pack Your Binocular for Summer Travel

Summer travel season is upon us, and families coast to coast are assembling their packing lists. Regardless of how you travel – by car, RV, boat, air, or even by backpack – one item you don’t want to forget is a high-quality binocular like those offered in the GPO USA ED series.

A binocular will allow you to see more than just birds and all manner of wildlife up close and personal. They’re perfect for viewing sporting events, concerts, architecture, and far-away landscapes, and after dark, a binocular will let you see the moon, the stars, and even the planets like you’ve never seen them before. Because a binocular allows the use of both eyes in a natural way, they are more comfortable than single telescopes. A binocular provides depth perception, and improves visual acuity by giving the human visual system two sets of data to process and combine. And they can be hand-held, not requiring a bulky tripod for support like a telescope does.

GPO’s 8×32, 8×42, 10×32 and 10×42 ED binoculars are perfect for the summer traveler. With their unique magnesium micro-bridge and body, all members of the ED binocular series are compact and ultra-lightweight, yet incredibly durable. They feature premium ED objective lenses, high-transmission GPObrightÔ lens coating technology, and are both fog proof and waterproof. The 8×42 and 10×42 units measure just 5.7 inches long and weigh just 26 oz., while the 8×32 and 10×32 units measure just 4.9 inches in length and weigh a mere 17.6 oz., creating the perfect balance between packability, portability, and performance. They are popular among outdoor enthusiasts and are some of the best-selling items in the GPO portfolio. Best of all, for summer GPO USA’s ED binocular line-up is available in four beautifully-rich colors – Black, Deep Green, Desert Sand, and Dark Brown Earth.

“Traveling with a binocular will enhance the entire family’s enjoyment, no matter where you go, what you do, or how you’re getting there,” said Mike Jensen, GPO USA President and CEO. “And GPO’s ED series melds the perfect combination of size and performance no matter where you’re heading.”

GPO ED binoculars are currently available and can be purchased at retailers nationwide or conveniently online at www.gpo-usa.com. They have a suggested retail price of $499.99 and $549.99, depending on model and color. All GPO products purchased in the USA include the GPO, USA Spectacular Lifetime Warranty. Full details of this warranty can be found at www.gpo-usa.com

Record Book Entries Deadline Nearing

There is still time to enter animals into Pope and Young’s 9th Edition Record Book

Pope and Young, America’s leading bowhunting conservation organization, announces the deadline for entry into the two-volume 9th edition Record Book.  The 32nd Recording Period will end on December 31, 2022.  This will be the deadline for consideration in the massive two volume Pope & Young 9th Edition Record Book.  To be considered for entry, your official entry must be post-marked by 12/31/22.

“Entering an animal in the books is something special, something that everyone with a qualifying animal should consider” says Dylan Ray, Marketing Director. “It isn’t about the hunter, it’s about honoring the animal, an animal that deserves to be in a book amongst his peers, for everyone to celebrate. We put our animals on a wall, and celebrate them in our own homes, but putting them in a record book will honor that animal forever, for everyone to celebrate.”

With over 14,000 new entries since the 8th edition was printed in 2017, this
two-book set will be the best edition yet. The Pope and Young Record Book has more entries than any other record book in North America.  This book is set to be published and available in April 2023. In it you will see 75 new Top five all time ranking trophies and 14 confirmed new world Records.  With the possibility of an additional 12 new World Records that are still currently ‘Pending’, there isn’t another record book that has ever showcased this many highly ranked animals.

“If you are a hunter, a bowhunter, or a collector of record books, this two-book set will be like no other”, stated Tim Rozewski, Director of Records. “With a limited printing, this book will be hard to get. If you are a hunter and have thought about putting your trophy in the record books, now is the time to do it!”

Virtual-Shot Offers Pistol Basics Training Course

Simulation Training Group updates the Virtual-Shot app with a five-course pistol basics training tutorial. The course is instructed by a former Special Forces Commando who teaches advanced pistol and urban combat skills.

The all-new pistol series joins the basic rifle series, taught by a member of the Virtual-Shot team, who is a former Infantry Sniper and Military Contractor.

Training videos are embedded in the Virtual-Shot app, allowing members to practice the fundamentals of pistol shooting from the comfort of their homes. The training videos help new shooters learn the basics of shooting and help experienced shooters refine their skills prior to firing live rounds.

Visiting a shooting range for the first time can often be intimidating, especially when Mr. Tacticool is at the range. Being able to practice the fundamentals of pistol shooting prior to visiting a gun range can give new shooters the confidence needed to fine-tune their skills.

Daryl Batchelor, CEO and Co-Founder of Simulation Training Group explained,  “There are a lot of great shooters out there, but it always amazes me whenever I go to a range to see so many shooters getting the fundamentals wrong and wondering why their shots are not going where they want. We believe that all shooters should have access to the knowledge and resources to improve their shooting and that is part of what we are trying to achieve with Virtual-Shot – democratizing access to shooting by enabling all shooters to refine their shooting skills, not just those that can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on ammo each week and every weekend at the range and thousands on personal coaching.”

Private Land on Demand: Expedition Outside Connects Fly Fishermen to Private Rivers in Colorado

Fly fishing enthusiasts wanting to fish private stretches of river throughout Colorado can now turn to  Expedition Outside (ExOut) for access to hundreds of miles of trout-abundant rivers.

Just like when renting through Airbnb, an angler would simply go to ExOut’s website, find a river in the area where they’d like to fish, and book a day. ExOut delivers just as its tagline states — “Private Land on Demand.”

What most anglers may not realize is that Colorado landowners who have a river running through their property actually own the riverbed too. While this can make river access very limited in some places, ExOut is working with both landowners and fly fishermen to make those private stretches of river accessible.

“We are a conservation-minded company that uses technology to help fly fishermen and women find their perfect spot,” said Christian Barnes, Expedition Outside’s founder. “Our goal is to preserve our public natural resources by pulling pressure away from those areas and giving those who seek quality fishing and solitude a day on the river they’ll never forget.”

ExOut’s business model has proven beneficial to Colorado ranchers and landowners. Hosts, as they’re referred to by the company, can generate an extra source of income when they work with ExOut to allow anglers access to their rivers.

Tampa congressional candidate to give away AR-15s as fundraiser

Republican frontrunner in Florida’s 14th Congressional District primary James Judge is giving away AR-15s as part of a fundraiser, and in defiance of House Democrat gun control measures

TAMPA, Fla. – In defiance of the Democrat-controlled U.S. House and U.S. Senate’s most recent push for further gun control measures, the frontrunner in Florida’s 14th Congressional District Republican Primary is giving away several AR-15s made by a controversial Florida gun manufacturer.

James Judge is hosting a giveaway of custom-made AR-15s from Spike’s Tactical to up to four lucky registrants who enter the drawing.

In addition to being known for making some of the best AR-15s on the planet, Spike’s Tactical has also made national and international headlines for years due to their extra-controversial products.

For example, the Spike’s Tactical Crusader rifle caused international media attention in 2015 because it featured a Bible verse on the side and was reportedly designed to not be used by Muslim terrorists.

Ranew’s Outdoor Equipment Offers a Full Line of Implements for all your Food Plot Needs

The Firminator G3 is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry, allowing the entire process of planting a food plot – plowing, planting and packing the soil – from start to finish with one implement. However, for those who already own tillage equipment but still want all the other features and advantages of a Firminator, there’s a stand-alone Firmiseeder.

Like the G3 unit, the Firmiseeder features Firminator’s Accurate Seeding System, which can handle any seed size from large corn, soybeans, peas and sunflowers to the tiniest clovers without the need to change seed hoppers. The Accurate Seeding System’s easily adjustable metering openings ensure seeds are spread in the right amount.

Because the system is ground-driven, the seed is metered out relative to the travel speed, allowing the user to control the seeding rate. The optional seed hopper agitator keeps seeds thoroughly mixed and prevents smaller seeds from sifting through too quickly. So it evenly spreads seed blends with extreme size differences in a single pass. When the unit stops, an automatic shut-off prevents wasteful spills that occur with other hopper types.

Simply spreading seeds is not enough. Post-spread packing is also essential as it ensures good seed-to-soil contact for better germination rates and protection from wind deflection. The Firmiseeder also has the Firminator’s commercial-grade culti-packer. As the Firmiseeder moves forward, seeds are dropped into a specially designed baffle that thoroughly distributes them before the culti-packer, which rolls over the seeds and compacts soil.

By distributing contact points over a larger surface area, Stella’s InfinityXross system delivers unrivaled gear durability to enhance reel performance and longevity. “From a practical standpoint, I want to use the best equipment available, and it needs to be tough,” reflects Bassmaster Elite Series professional Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson. “The build quality, tightness, rigidity and tolerances of the new Stella FK are absolutely perfect.”

How Much to Feed a Sporting Breed Puppy

By Eukanuba Staff

Puppies are a lot of things. They’re curious, they take a lot of naps, and when they wake up they’ve got a tremendous amount of energy. They’ve got powerful appetites and are always on the lookout for the next meal. But there’s more to feeding a puppy than filling up a bowl with kibble.

Puppies have powerful appetites and are always on the lookout for the next meal.

Feeding Your Puppy is a Progressive Game

Feeding sporting breed puppies is a progressive game that includes two primary goals. The first is that the volume puppies are fed helps them arrive at their ideal adult weight. The second is that their feeding routine should help puppies arrive at that target weight at the age-appropriate time.

Russ Kelley, Eukanuba’s Scientific Services Nutritionist, says puppy weight gains should be progressive and consistent. “When feeding puppies, it’s best to start with the feeding recommendations found on the manufacturer’s bag,” he said. “Then, break that total daily volume into smaller portions that you can feed on a regular basis. Most puppies follow a similar daily schedule; they wake up from a nap, they want to eat, then they want to play, and then they want to nap. Feed them on a regular schedule, between 3 and 4 times a day. Maintain that routine until the puppy is around four months old. At that point, reduce to twice-daily feedings, with one in the morning and one in the late afternoon or evening.”

Progressive growth in puppies is important so that their body systems grow in unison and at an appropriate rate.

Progressive growth during the puppy-rearing period is important so that a puppy’s body systems grow in unison and at an appropriate rate. “While you’re feeding your puppy, you’ll want to keep track of his weight in two ways,” Kelley said. “The first is on a scale and the second is based on a puppy’s body condition score. That combination provides a cross-reference between physical weight and how that weight compares to a standard.”

New Historical Articles Added to the 100-Year Celebration Federal Ammunition Website

As part of the 100-year anniversary celebration, Federal Ammunition is featuring monthly online content celebrating Federal’s rich history. The month of June highlighted Federal’s role in supplying war-time ammunition and conservation-focused advertising. These new articles can be found on the 100-year anniversary website: https://www.federalpremium.com/this-is-federal/a-century-of-authority/.

In times of war and peace, Federal Ammunition has supplied the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and allied countries with products that they can rely on. The article “Serving the Nation’s Warfighters” follows the history of Federal Ammunition first supplying 1.4 million mortar ignition cartridges to the British Purchasing Commission before the start of WWII to Vietnam and current military ammunition needs.

“One of the accomplishments we are most proud of at Federal is to be able to supply the U.S. and allied countries with reliable ammunition in times of peace and conflict,” said Jason Nash, Federal Ammunition Vice President of Marketing. “Over the years Federal has been able to tailor products to fit the scenarios of various conflicts for generations.”

In the 1930s, Federal Ammunition created a series of advertisements to tackle common misconceptions in wildlife conservation. In the article “Supporting Conservation with Advertisements” Federal Ammunition took the lead to inform and correct misinformation on a wide range of conservation issues from shooting owls and hawks to releasing feral cats, and extinguishing campfires.

“At Federal Ammunition we are outdoorsman and conservationists,” said Nash. “In the early years of our company history, Federal took the lead to correct thinking and practices that were harmful to wildlife and to help usher in a new understanding when it came to wildlife management.”

Brittany French, Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors Vice President commented, “This program is identifying barriers that youth face when becoming a hunter or angler. Our program is able to break those barriers by providing access, social support and guidance from vetted volunteer mentors. With the generosity from RMEF, we are going to be able to serve more deserving youth in the outdoors!”

“RMEF is pleased to support again this year the tremendous work being completed by Pass It On- Outdoor Mentors” said Blake Henning, RMEF Chief Conservation Officer. “This mentorship program is having tremendous success and we look forward to helping Pass It On expand its work.”

“Our Shooting Sports Outreach Program is exceeding our initial expectations. We now have 2 full-time Program Coordinators in Kansas and 1 full-time Program Coordinator in Iowa, and we expect to grow to more states in the next 18-24 months,” shared Mike Christensen, President of Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors. “None of this would be possible without the strong support we have received from RMEF since the very beginning. When organizations can partner and leverage our expertise, we can make great things happen for kids in the outdoors!”
