Beat Nature at its Own Game with Skeeter Hawk

There have been a number of “solutions” over the years that have been dreamt up to deal with mosquitoes and other pesky insects–many of those ideas centered on smelly, sometimes dangerous chemicals that had limited results.

There’s nothing worse than spending hard-earned dollars in an attempt to rid pests only to end up with a chemical smell and little to no effect on bothersome critters.

This begs the question, what can homeowners do to defeat these annoying, biting bugs in the battle for the backyard?

Skeeter Hawk has the answer – beat nature at its own game

Skeeter Hawk products employ a blend of natural essential oils to repel insects effectively. They are the only wearable repellent wristbands and carabiners utilizing all-essential oils that aren’t dominated by citronella. Their ingredients – geraniol, lemongrass oil, and citronella oil – have proven to be more effective than citronella alone at repelling mosquitoes, and won’t leave the wearer reeking of chemicals.

The Stinger and Stinger RS – Bond Arms’ Newest Derringers are Lighter, Slimmer and Deliver a Double-Shot of Venom

Bond Arms is well-known for its compact, yet powerful, personal protection pistols. After years of research and development, the Bond Arms team released the Stinger – its lightest, smallest derringer ever. It has the familiar fit, feel, function, and reliability of other Bond double-barrelled pistols in an ultra-concealable and super-comfortable size and weight configuration. The Stinger is currently chambered for either 9mm or .380 auto. It’s made from advanced modern materials and engineered for durability.

The Stinger uses a slim, aluminum frame that is precision milled from a billet of 7075 aluminum, known industry-wide for toughness. A black hard-coat anodized finish further shields the frame in use. A generously sized, integral trigger guard protects the trigger, yet allows easy access. Slim, high-impact, Zytel, composite grips pair with the wasp-waisted pistol’s narrow profile, making it perfect for concealability. The Stinger also includes standard-sized, rubber grip panels for those who prefer a larger grip.

A stainless steel firing pin block inset into the aluminum frame strengthens the receiver and allows for the firing of +P rounds. The release lever, cross-bolt safety, hammer, and trigger are also stainless steel; adding steel parts in these critical areas enhances the Stinger’s durability. The Stinger’s 3-inch barrels match the frame’s narrow 0.55-inch profile and is available in 9mm and .380 auto, with a .22 long rifle model on the horizon.

At the recent 2022 NRA Meetings & Exhibits, Bond Arms debuted a stainless steel version of the Stinger: the Stinger RS. This slim and sleek rendition of the Stinger comes with all the original functionality, a reliable frame, and a friendly price point. This new edition is available from Bond Arms starting June 20th.

Bond Arms created the Stinger for customers wanting a lightweight, slim pistol chambered for powerful, defense rounds. Like all of Bond’s complete pistol lines, the Stinger is safe, durable, and reliable – perfect for self-defense.

Gold Tip and Bee Stinger™ Archers Top Podium at ASA Metropolis

Gold Tip, an industry leader in carbon arrows and bolts, is celebrating several wins at the ASA Mathew’s Archery “Superman” Pro/Am, which took place June 23-26 in Metropolis, Illinois. The tournament is the last stop before the ASA Classic Championship in late July.

Last year’s Classic champion Jeff Raney took the top spot in the highly competitive Known Pro class. “I knew Jeff was going to win big events shortly after I met him,” said Tim Gillingham, staff manager for Team Gold Tip and Bee Stinger™. “He just has the intensity that it takes.” Meanwhile, teammate Kyle Douglas finished third.

In the Open Pro class, Levi Morgan took home the second-place spot. In the Senior Pro class, Tim Gillingham took first place in a shoot off that was won on the final arrow. In both the Senior Pro and Known Pro classes, all archers were within two points of each other going into the shootdown, illustrating how tough the competition really is at these events.

“I wasn’t sure I was even going to make the shoot-off and then hit two of the last three 12s and was pleasantly surprised that I was only two points out of the lead,” said Gillingham.  “I knew my Bowtech/Gold Tip Triple X combo was shooting very well and all I needed was to judge good yardage in the shoot-off to win the event.”

Gillingham’s latest victory adds to an already impressive archery season that has seen him take second and first place respectively at the first and second legs of the IBO Triple Crown.

NWTF opposes bill that would dismantle U.S. conservation funding system

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The National Wild Turkey Federation is strenuously opposed to HR 8167, a bill introduced in the House of Representatives that removes the self-imposed excise tax on firearms, ammunition and archery equipment that funds the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, also known as the Pittman-Robertson Act.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) introduced the RETURN (Repealing Excise Tax on Unalienable Rights Now) Our Constitutional Rights Act of 2022 that would undo what is considered the most successful conservation funding model in the world.

“This year, the Pittman-Robertson Act celebrated its 85th anniversary and eclipsed $15 billion in contributions funneled to state fish and wildlife agencies across the country for wildlife and habitat conservation efforts,” said NWTF Co-CEO Becky Humphries. “We are very concerned that this bill would undermine the American System of Conservation Funding, which is looked to by nations around the world as the most successful model in the history of wildlife conservation.”

The 1937 Pittman-Robertson Act provides for a “user pays-public benefits” system of funding and directs an excise tax on the sale of firearms, ammunition and archery equipment. It is a primary funding source for state fish and wildlife agencies, who use the funds to undertake wildlife conservation, provide for hunter and recreational shooter recruitment, public shooting range construction and other activities. Last year alone, these excise taxes generated more than $1 billion in funding to assist state wildlife agencies in fulfilling their missions.

These user-supported excise taxes, combined with millions in funding generated annually through the purchase of hunting licenses and stamps, demonstrates the long-standing commitment of members of the sporting-conservation community to personally invest in science-based conservation and wildlife management. Additionally, funding the Pittman- Robertson Act through alternative sources would negatively impact the sporting-conservation community’s relationship with state fish and wildlife agencies. Without the financial contributions of sportsmen and women and sporting manufacturers, we may lose our seat at the decision-making table.

THE NEW EL RANGE with TRACKING ASSISTANT

Now Available in Orange from SWAROVSKI OPTIK

Cranston, Rhode Island – SWAROVSKI OPTIK NORTH AMERICA, a subsidiary of the Austrian based company, is pleased to announce the new EL Range with Tracking Assistant binocular is now available in the popular orange armoring. These redesigned range finding binoculars allow you to transfer your own ballistics data to make an accurate assessment of every hunting situation. The new innovative tracking assistant helps narrow down the area where your last shot hit the target. The previous EL O-Range was beneficial for quickly locating binoculars placed down in the field and is back in the new EL Range with Tracking Assistant.

The new EL Range with Tracking Assistant features SWAROVISION technology. Now with perfect edge to edge sharpness and combined with color fidelity and outstanding detail resolution. Also, with an enhanced FOV of 359 ft when compared to the original EL Range of 330 ft.

Using the built-in Bluetooth interface, three different ballistics curves can be fed in the EL Range with Tracking Assistant. While all the other settings can also be adjusted on the binocular itself, configuring the ballistics must be done via the EL Range with Tracking Assistant Configurator App. The range measurement of the EL Range with Tracking Assistant is based on a travel time measurement using a laser. The range can be measured between 10.9 yards (10 meters) and 2200 yards (2000 meters). Once the ballistic data is entered into the app, you can choose to have the EL Range with Tracking Assistant send back data letting the user know elevation corrections in the rifle scope in MOA, MRAD or clicks. Angle, Temperature and Air Pressure are automatically measured by the EL Range with Tracking Assistant in calculating the corrections.

The featured Tracking Assistant helps the hunter identify the target area by measuring back to the point where the last shot was fired. This can be done in two ways: via the EL Range with Tracking Assistant and via the app.

Union Sportsmen’s Alliance Hosts Inaugural Richard L. Trumka Memorial Get Youth Outdoors Day

Spring Hill, Tenn.—Nearly 75 youth experienced the excitement of sporting clays and fishing firsthand on Saturday, June 25 during the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) Inaugural Richard L. Trumka Memorial Get Youth Outdoors Day at the Point at Pintail in Queenstown, Maryland.

The free community event followed on the heels of the USA’s Inaugural AFL-CIO Richard L. Trumka Memorial Sporting Clays Shoot, both named in honor of late USA Chairman of the Board and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, whose passion for hunting, fishing, shooting and passing on the outdoor heritage helped launch and shape the mission of the USA.

“One of Rich Trumka’s favorite things to do was to take his grandsons fishing—to pass on an outdoor tradition that his dad passed down to him,” said Kinsey Robinson, USA chairman of the board and president emeritus of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers.  “Rich believed that every family should get to experience that bond, so I know he would be proud to have a youth outdoors event named in his honor. I just wish he could have been there with us to see all the smiles on the kids’ faces as they connected with the great outdoors and made memories that will last a lifetime.”

Each participating youth at the USA’s Richard L. Trumka Memorial Get Youth Outdoors Day received a free fishing rod and reel to continue the hobby after the event.

The inaugural event was the first USA outreach event to combine shooting and fishing, and volunteers provided the kids with safety training and hands-on assistance with both. Nancy Kules attended the event with her children. “My husband is an injured Army veteran and shooting with multiple kids can be challenging without other trained adults to help. This was an excellent opportunity for our family and made it a lot easier for us to continue to expose our kids safely and confidently to shooting.”

“I think Rich Trumka would have been pleased to see so many new shooters and anglers participate in this inaugural event bearing his name,” said USA CEO and Executive Director Walt Ingram. “I know he would have been beaming with pride knowing his grandchildren got to enjoy their first Get Youth Outdoors Day with their mother and father. I can’t help but hear him say, ‘This was good. Now, go do more of it,’ and we will. Of course, we couldn’t have put on this event without the support of our volunteers, led by USA Chairman of the Board Kinsey Robinson and his wife Mona.”

New Research Initiated in Texas Hill Country

The NWTF is helping fund a new, three-year wild turkey research project conducted by researchers from multiple universities and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The project will take place in the Edwards Plateau Ecoregion, a 36,680-square-mile landscape known to many as Texas Hill Country.

Over the years, the Edwards Plateau has recorded the highest number of Rio Grande wild turkey harvests in all of Texas. Researchers and managers, however, are noticing a dip in the number of birds harvested, which also coincides with some serious habitat threats, posing many questions that need answers.

“Data suggests that Rio Grande abundance, number of hunters and number of birds harvested have dipped in recent years,” said Blake Grisham, Ph.D., director and associate professor of wildlife management at Texas Tech University. “In the Edwards Plateau Ecoregion, degradation of riparian habitats has occurred and is likely associated with many factors, including changes in the frequency and magnitude of flood pulses, ungulate browsing, unmanaged grazing, lack of prescribed fire, feral pig damage and direct damage to riparian vegetation caused by large groups of invasive axis deer.”

The terms “riparian areas,” “riparian zones” or “riparian corridors” are how wildlife biologists, managers and researchers refer to those habitat-rich areas between water and land.

For instance, the area from the edge of a lake to the beginning of the surrounding forest would be considered a riparian zone. Another example would be from the river bank to the adjacent woodland.

U.S. LAWSHIELD® WELCOMES PERMITLESS CARRY IN INDIANA

Legal Defense for Self Defense®

U.S. LawShield®, industry leader in self-defense law and America’s foremost provider of educational resources on safe firearm ownership welcomes Indiana as the 24th state to enact permitless carry, otherwise known as constitutional carry. Effective July 1, 2022, Indiana House Bill 1296, “Indiana Permitless Carry,” repeals the law that requires a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun in the state.

According to U.S. LawShield CEO P.J. Hermosa, “Folks tend to think the new permitless carry legislation in Indiana is simple, but if they don’t understand its complexities, their actions could lead to trouble. We educate people on what is required to be legally armed and how to keep themselves and their families safe. Just because a license isn’t required doesn’t mean there aren’t restrictions, and it’s important to consider that ignorance of the law is not an excuse for breaking it.”

Hermosa continued, “The experienced U.S. LawShield Independent Program Attorneys who wrote the book on Indiana gun laws spell out exactly what you need to know to stay on the right side of the law in the Indiana Permitless Carry Guide. And, we encourage responsible gun owners to educate themselves on what the legislation means for them as residents of Indiana.”

Shimano Reel Technologies Propel Anglers to Success

Advanced Features Provide Premium Angling Advantages

Shimano elevates the angling experience. Built upon a legacy of design, engineering and manufacturing excellence that spans more than a century, Shimano reels, rods and lures leverage advanced, proprietary technologies that propel anglers to success. Thanks to unparalleled metalworking and gear design expertise, Shimano reels allow anglers to cast farther, crank harder and fight tougher than ever. Innovative features permeate Shimano conventional, baitcasting and spinning reels, with premium technologies appearing first in flagship offerings and then working their way into reels throughout the entire lineup.

Gears are the heart and soul of every reel. Insightful engineering and high-tolerance manufacturing ensure that Shimano gears – and the reel bodies that encase them – lead the industry in smoothness, power and durability. Application of Shimano’s HAGANE design concept creates reels that withstand continual use and extreme abuse by seamlessly blending toughness and durability with precision engineering and enduring craftsmanship. No single reel component embodies the HAGANE concept more than Shimano’s HAGANE Gear: A cold-forged aluminum drive gear that delivers smooth feel and reliable function over many seasons. By leveraging an exclusive three-dimensional design process and eliminating cutting work on the drive gear, the HAGANE Gear offers unparalleled durability compared to reels with diecast or machined gears. Anglers will find the HAGANE Gear in a wide range of Shimano reels suitable for fresh and saltwater angling, from tournament-tested baitcasting reels like the Curado series to flagship spinning reels like Stella SW C and the new Stella FK.

HAGANE Gear

Shimano elevates gear technology to unmatched levels with MicroModule Gear II, which delivers refined, ultra-smooth reeling. MicroModule Gear II uses an entirely new gear set with an increased number of smaller teeth to provide additional contact points between the pinion and drive gears, delivering a smoother and more efficient gear train. Anglers will notice the difference that MicroModule Gear II technology delivers with smoother gear operation and reduced sound and can find this exceptional Shimano technology in a wide range of spinning and baitcasting reels. The Shimano legacy of high-precision gear development continues to evolve within the all-new InfinityXross system, which expands the drive gear tooth horizontally, dispersing load between the drive and pinion gears more efficiently. By distributing contact points over a larger surface area, the InfinityXross system delivers unrivaled gear durability, enhancing reel performance and longevity.

InfinityXross

The technologically-advanced Infinity Drive system fortifies the performance of exceptional reels that Shimano engineered to tackle the toughest predators. A unique main shaft supporting structure and special low-friction bushings and coatings in the Infinity Drive system significantly reduce sliding resistance when anglers reel against large and powerful fish. Now, every reel handle turn requires less effort to get headstrong adversaries moving toward the boat.

New Federal Duck Stamp and Junior Duck Stamp Soar Into Their Debut by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Hunters, birders, and stamp collectors celebrated as the 2022-2023 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp – commonly known as the Duck Stamp – went on sale. The new Federal Duck Stamp and its younger sibling, the Junior Duck Stamp, debuted and are now available for purchase.

The Federal Duck Stamp plays a critically important role in wildlife conservation. Since 1934, sales of this stamp have raised more than $1.1 billion to protect over 6 million acres of wetlands habitat in the National Wildlife Refuge System, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“I am thrilled to put my stamp on conservation with the purchase of my Federal Duck Stamps and encourage others to join me,” said Service Director Martha Williams. “This is one of the easiest ways to support migratory bird habitat conservation. Of every dollar spent on a duck stamp, 98 cents of the purchase goes directly to acquiring and protecting habitat for ducks, geese, swans and other wildlife.”

Waterfowl are not the only species that benefit from wetland habitat preservation. Thousands upon thousands of shorebirds, herons, raptors and songbirds, as well as mammals, fish, native plants, reptiles and amphibians rely on these landscapes as well. In addition, other Birds of Conservation Concern use wetland and connected upland habitat to feed, breed, migrate and rest, including species like the wood thrush, golden-winged warbler, reddish egret, and long-billed curlew.

The pair of redheads painted by artist James Hautman from Minnesota, adorns the new Federal Duck Stamp and will raise millions of dollars for habitat conservation to benefit wildlife and the American people. This is a record-breaking sixth Federal Duck Stamp Hautman has designed for the Department of the Interior.
