National R3 Symposium Returns, Registration Now Open

Washington, D.C. – The Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports (Council) announces the return of the National R3 Symposium, opening registration for the bedrock recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) event in Broken Arrow, OK.

Scheduled for May 2-5, professionals from agencies, non-governmental organizations and industries across the country will converge at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center for in-depth discussions dedicated to ensuring the funding and future of conservation through participation in hunting, target shooting, angling, boating and other outdoor recreation.

Sessions will address hunting participation and land access, shooting participation and range access, policy and regulations, technological solutions, social media and marketing, storytelling and mentorship, diversifying and enhancing hunting and the shooting sports and Dr. Novotny Lawrence, Associate Professor at Iowa State University, will spotlight the stereotypes and misguided portrayal of African Americans and guns in the media.

“The national R3 movement has made great strides in increasing participation in hunting, shooting sports, angling and outdoor recreation, but the work must continue,” said Executive Director Dr. Steven Leath. “Anyone with a vested interest in securing the future of wildlife conservation and the shooting sports should attend.”

There have been so many significant R3 initiatives implemented across the country in the past few years and the demand to hear about them is enormous. In response, the Council has added something new. R3minutes will be a rapid fire session, open for R3 professionals to share their best projects, success stories, and lessons learned while engaging in a little lighthearted competition. Abstracts are due by April 15 for consideration. Visit the symposium page and click on the R3minutes tab to learn more.

Abraham, Kramp Lead First Pistol Events at 2022 Western CMP Games and HP Matches

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) returned to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, March 11-20, to host its annual Western CMP Games & CMP HP Matches. The 2022 event was the first time Western Games has been held since it was unexpectedly cut short back in March 2020 – welcoming 200 competitors back to the desert ranges.

Western Games is a combination of specially designed vintage and modern rifle events, created by the CMP as a recreational getaway for marksmanship enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. The event also features across-the-course HP (highpower) competitions that include a 4-Man Team Match, three days of 80 Shot Aggregate matches and Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) Service Rifle matches, fired at the 200, 300 and 600 yard lines. Additionally, concluding 2400 Aggregate awards are determined from scores throughout the HP event.

CW03 Jordan Kramp was the overall winner of the Pistol 2700 Aggregate as well as the EIC Service Pistol and .22 Rimfire Pistol events.

New for 2022 and now joining the likes of other CMP Games events, Western Games has introduced a series of pistol matches, involving aggregate and individual events blended within the schedule to complement the long list of rifle opportunities.

Earning the first Overall Individual Pistol Aggregate honor at Western Games was Greg Abraham, 69, of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, with an accumulated score of 1283-30X. Abraham led both the Military & Police Service Pistol (379-7X) and 1911 As-Issued Pistol (372-10X) competitions during the event that helped lead him to the aggregate win.

Western Games is a mix of vintage and modern rifle events and now, as of 2022, pistol matches.

Overtaking both the EIC Service Pistol and the .22 Rimfire Pistol EIC matches was CW03 Jordan Kramp, 41, of Yuma, Arizona. Kramp earned a score of 286-11X in the .22 Match and 283-9X in the Service Pistol event. Remarkably, Kramp also led all the 900 Aggregate matches: 864-28X in Center Fire, 869-22X in .45, and 872-35X in .22. By no surprise, his cumulative score of 2605-85X from the matches allowed him to claim the overall win in the Match Pistol 2700 Aggregate.

Adept Armor Introduces the First Future-Proofed Armor Plate: the Colossus™

After years of R&D in ceramic armor materials and systems, Adept Armor proudly announces an armor plate strong enough to counter today’s AP threats, as well as the AP threats of tomorrow, with the new Colossus™ Armor Plate.

Adept Armor, an armor system engineering firm, announces the latest evolution in ceramic armor with the Colossus™ Armor Plate offering protective capabilities beyond Level IV or RF3 plates. The Colossus was designed from the ground up using the most advanced materials available to produce the strongest plate in its category, yet weighing significantly less than the average Level IV or RF3 plate at just over six pounds.

The Colossus was built and tested to VPAM 12 with a ballistic rating for 7.62x51mm Swiss P AP (tungsten core) at 810 m/s. VPAM is the European standard for testing and measurement of ballistic materials and products. Additionally, the Colossus is also rated for:

VPAM 11 – 7.62x51mm M993 (tungsten core) at 940 m/sLevel IV (RF3) – .30-06 AP M2 at 880 m/sSpecial threats7..62x54mmR Bf32 API at 860 m/s5.56x45mm M995 at 1000 m/s5.45x39mm AP at 880 m/sSimilar and lesser threats

The US Army X Threat Small Arms Protective insert plate (XSAPI) designed to VPAM 11 was developed to protect the wearer from an “X-Threat,” most likely the M993 7.62 NATO armor-piercing round. Adept Armor’s new Colossus Armor Plate exceeds the protection offered by the XSAPI plates. The Colossus was specifically designed to thwart tungsten-cored small arms threats.

The multi-curve Colossus is made from advanced SiC-TiB2 ceramic; Vectran®, a hi-tech liquid crystal polymer fiber known for its high-strength, high heat resistance, and low stretch capabilities; and UHMWPE composite in a thermoplastic wrap. The premium-grade thermoplastic foam on the strike-face offers drop protection, and on the body-side, it serves as an integrated trauma pad. Weighing just 6.5 lbs. in the Shooter’s Cut, the Colossus is only 1.13” in thickness.

Adept Armor’s next-gen, future-proofed, edge-to-edge protection ceramic armor plate, the Colossus is available now in a variety of configurations, and ready to meet todays and tomorrow’s threats. MSRP starts at $640.00 for a 10” x 12” unit.

CMP’s Renay Woodruff Finds Unexpected Passion Through Her Work

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is an organization that prides itself on providing a venue for everyday citizens to learn and explore the world of marksmanship. The company has been successful at fulfilling that mission over the years, and sometimes they’re even lucky enough to inspire those who never intended to get involved with the pastime.

“My background in marksmanship was absolutely non-existent,” said Renay Woodruff, the South Competition Center supervisor at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) South Office in Anniston, Alabama.

She’s been with the CMP for over a decade, working various positions. She initially signed up with the company only looking for a good job to help support her children, and her time at the organization has provided that and more through her new, unexpected passion.

As South Competition Supervisory, Renay can often be found hanging medals at CMP air gun events.

Renay became captivated by the sport of marksmanship, specifically air pistol, simply from exposure. Through motivation and enthusiastic support from her employer, Renay went from practically zero knowledge on the subject to competing in several air pistol events throughout the year – elevating her position within the CMP along the way.

From national-level events like the USA Shooting Winter Airgun match held at the South Competition Center in December to more local competitions like CMP’s Monthly Matches, Renay has sprouted from a humble bystander to a dedicated athlete.

As Region 6 Director, Phillips managed ocean fisheries policy issues, worked to improve public access to fisheries and helped implement state laws and federal regulations relating to fisheries. Delta Waterfowl Releases Thrilling Short Film:“The Duck Connection”

Stunning cinematography and expert insight from The Duck Hunters Organization reveal why quality hunting in the South is massively dependent upon good duck production in the North.

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — Delta Waterfowl proudly introduces Part One of its film series, “The Duck Connection,” illustrating why quality hunting in the South is massively dependent upon good duck production in the North.

In the two-part film produced in association with Arterra Media, Delta’s chief scientist, Dr. Frank Rohwer, guides a tour of North America’s duck mega-producer — the prairie pothole region — and explores why its wetlands help produce 70 percent of North America’s ducks. Then, you’ll follow the migration south, where Rohwer and Delta volunteer, Bryan Glass, celebrate the fruits of Delta’s efforts: Ducks over decoys.

“The prairie pothole region is a huge area, much bigger than the size of Texas, and yet relative to where the total range of where ducks nest, it’s a tiny fraction,” Rohwer said. “But it produces the vast majority of our ducks. It’s where it makes sense for Delta to work.”

If you love ducks and want more of them over your decoys, then don’t miss a second of “The Duck Connection.” It’s a collection of stunning footage portraying Delta’s membership-driven efforts for waterfowlers in the South, North and continent-wide.

Granbury, Nation Ford Teams Again Lead 2022 JROTC National Air Rifle Championship

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Granbury High School Marine Corps JROTC from Texas and Nation Ford High School Marine Corps JROTC from South Carolina know how to win. At the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center in Ohio, Granbury marked its fourth consecutive national precision title at the 2022 JROTC National Three-Position Air Rifle Championship, held March 17-19. Nation Ford MCJROTC claimed the sporter team division title for the third consecutive year. The South Carolina High School has earned the sporter championship title four times overall.

It was the first time since 2019 that athletes were again able to compete in-person for the event. The two-day, three-position competition features both precision and sporter class high school athletes from all JROTC service branches (Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force). The 2022 Championship included a training day along with two days of qualifying scores and a concluding finals match for the top eight leading athletes in each discipline.

Breaking from the traditional 10-shot final, this year’s final followed a three-position elimination format. Participating athletes accumulated scores at three different positions: three, five-shot series at kneeling and prone and two, five-shot series in standing. Once the last standing series was completed, the lowest two places were eliminated, followed by single shots for single eliminations of the remaining athletes – ultimately determining the overall winners.

The 2022 JROTC National Championship was held at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center, located at Camp Perry (Port Clinton), Ohio.

Five of the eight athletes on the line during the precision final represented Granbury High School, including members of the four-person winning team, Sunnee Schumann, Sarah Folsom, Ashton Arlington and eventual overall individual winner, Parker Haydin.

“I was not taking second place for an answer,” said Haydin, 18, a senior. “This is my last year, and it’s been my goal since I was a freshman. I told myself when I become a senior, I’m going to win this. First place – not taking second.”

The Pinhoti Project Now Part of Benelli Social Ambassador Program

Turkey season is almost upon us, and Benelli celebrates the annual gobblers-and-guns action by adding to its Social Ambassador program Dave Owens and The Pinhoti Project.

Named for a derivative of the Creek language meaning “turkey home,” The Pinhoti Project presents an immersive approach to the art of turkey hunting. Exploits, documented through minimalist videography, take viewers on real-world turkey hunts that illustrate the challenges and frustrations of pursuing crafty gobblers. Those early mornings and “knees-and-elbows” stalks, along with frustrating lows and the thrilling highs, showcase turkey hunting’s most unpredictable and exciting times.

“There are many reasons turkey hunters are so dedicated to their craft. The pursuit of longbeards brings a mix of adrenaline peaks, physical exertion, extreme patience, fast action, shifting strategies, and exhilaration that can occur several times in a single morning,” comments Benelli’s Tim Joseph. “The Pinhoti Project brings all of this to the forefront, and Dave does an excellent job of presenting this most thrilling game to beginner and experienced turkey hunters alike. We are excited to welcome The Pinhoti Project to our Social Ambassador program and look forward to many adventures this coming turkey season.”

Sea Falcon® Z-Slow Jig

Instead of pitching a fit because you’re not catching fish, try pitching a Sea Falcon® Z-Slow jig. The Z-Slow jig is the standard Sea Falcon slow-pitch jig shape, and is the most versatile jig in the Sea Falcon lineup. If an angler doesn’t know which shape to throw, the Z-Slow jig is a good place to start.

Z-Slow jigs are specifically designed for slow pitch jigging, a specialized form of jigging designed to target predatory reef and wreck species. Z-Slow pitch jigs are center-weighted to produce an enticing action on the swim-up and an irresistible flutter on the fall and are extremely responsive with even the slightest turn of the handle.

Z-Slow jigs are available in a wide variety of enticing colors and are also enhanced with aluminum or holographic applications. Hook eyes are all part of the same one-piece wireframe to ensure superior strength and lure integrity. The rugged hand-painted finish will stand up to repeated attacks from the toothiest predators. Z-Slow jigs are also available in a wide range of sizes from 45 – 400 grams.

To ensure you can fine-tune your presentation to get the best performance from your jigs, Sea Falcon has developed a specification chart for each jig indicating the correct fall speed, weight balance, pause time, current, pulling resistance and slide width, and maps them out on an easy to understand chart on their website.

Every Sea Falcon lure is based on a hand-carved original created by CEO and Chief Designer Tetsuya Itou, one of Japan’s foremost lure designers. Based in Hamamatsu, Japan, they operate under the ‘Total Package’ concept, combining all processes from planning and development to manufacturing all under one roof. Sea Falcon ensures supreme quality and continues to provide innovative products to the fishing world.
