Commodity and Conservation Organizations Join Forces to Co-Host Learning Center Session at the 2022 Commodity Classic

Learn about matching profitability with ecological performance on March 11

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are partnering with the United Sorghum Checkoff Program and  Cotton Incorporated to host a learning center session at the 2022 Commodity Classic in New Orleans at 12:30pm, March 11. A group of six speakers will discuss combining precision agriculture and conservation to build farming systems that match profitability with ecological performance.

“Conservation practices bring immense value to both farms and ecosystems through improved soil health, increased biodiversity and other key climate-positive impacts,” Rachel Bush, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s conservation programs manager said. “When targeted in the right way, these practices can also increase an operation’s overall economic profitability, making it a win-win for all sides.”

The session will open with an introduction from Dr. Mark McConnell of Mississippi State on the emerging opportunities in conservation as part of a sustainable and profitable farming operation. Following the opening comments, representatives from Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, and Cotton Incorporated will share a brief overview of their approaches to grower-focused partnerships being implemented throughout the Great Plains and the Southern States. Culminating the learning session are farmer testimonials from Kansas sorghum farmer Andy Hineman and Georgia cotton farmer Nick McMichen, discussing the key role precision ag tools play on their family farms for conservation, sustainability and profitability.

“By utilizing an acre-by-acre approach in their conservation efforts and identifying the most strategic acres for wildlife habitat or practice improvements, our partnerships are keeping working lands productive. In finding that ‘sweet spot,’ farmers are building successful cropping operations alongside healthy landscapes,” Adam York, sustainability director for the United Sorghum Checkoff Program said.

A Fishy Forecast for the Bassmaster Classic

Bass Fishing’s Biggest Prize Awaits One Versatile, Resourceful Angler
By Dena Woerner-Vick

The attention of the bass fishing universe is focused squarely on Lake Hartwell near Greenville, South Carolina this week, as 55 professional anglers – including 16 rookies – compete in the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk. As veteran Elite Series pros Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson and David Mullins rig rods, tie knots, and devise plans to reach the pivotal final day of competition, they each opened their playbooks to provide us with their best guesses about how this year’s Classic will unfold.

Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson

Hailing from the rocky shorelines of Ontario’s expansive Lake of the Woods, Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson is on a quest to become the first Canadian champion at the Bassmaster Classic. No stranger to hoisting the heavy hardware, Gussy scored his first Bassmaster Elite Series victory on the Tennessee River in 2020 and is now preparing to compete in his third Classic. “I feel lucky and grateful to be back at the Bassmaster Classic,” reflects Gustafson, who is only Elite Series angler to have a “Loonie” – Canada’s one-dollar coin  – permanently embedded within his boat’s carpeted deck. “It reminds me of home and all the people who helped me get where I am today – and there’s no doubt that it brings me good luck!”

“I’ve fished Hartwell a couple of times before,” notes Gustafson, “so I know what to expect. The water is cold, so this should be a pre-spawn event. In fact, I want it to stay cold – I’d be fine if my Lund Pro-V Bass boat was frozen to the trailer every morning. Cold weather and cold water will set up a strong offshore bite – and that’s my biggest strength. There has been some rain near the lake recently, and it’s forecast to rain some more. That influx of water will warm up the backwaters and muddy them up, so I’m sure some competitors will be fishing shallow, dirty water – and no doubt, there will be some big fish caught that way. But I’m looking for consistency offshore; that’s the game I’m going to play.”

Military Warriors Support Foundation and the Dunn Ranch Host a Hunt for Veterans

Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Skills4Life program and the Dunn Ranch hosted an unforgettable bonding experience for Combat-Wounded Veterans. The purpose of this event was to provide Heroes with a much-needed opportunity to get out and enjoy nature and various outdoor activities.

Heroes had an excellent start to the week with superb weather for hunting with highs around 50-60 degrees. However, the animal’s cooperation was another story. Fully embracing these challenges in the field, our veterans kept on hunting the entire time with a firm resolve. As a result of their hard work, the group tagged two deer and a hog.

Despite the hardship during the hunt, these Warriors enjoyed great fellowship and camaraderie throughout their time together, making this event fulfilling for everyone involved. Moreover, the participants were pleased to meet the great author Mark Greathouse, a cousin of John Dunn. Mark gifted each Hero with a signed copy of Nueces Blood, his newest book and the fourth of the Tumbleweed Sagas.

During this event, the participants learned how to load, shoot and reload old flintlock rifles. They utilized this knowledge at the range, and each of them fired five shots. Everyone expressed a tremendous appreciation for the Heroes who came before them who had to use these weapons on the battlefield.

Military Warriors Support Foundation wants to thank the Dunn Ranch for hosting this hunt and to each of our Heroes for their sacrifice, and for making this weekend immensely successful. It was a truly unforgettable Skills4Life event for all involved.

Fish Like A Pro: Choose the Perfect Bait for Fishing

A popular question from new fishermen is how to pick a fishing bait. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the variety of bait choices available while starting fishing. There are many enticements to pick from, but you must limit your choices to just a handful for each fishing session.

Although no bait is guaranteed to catch fish, the more you understand about each, the more and more fish you’ll hook. Let’s get you started on the right track by going over some recommendations for common fishing bait options that work.

How to Choose the Right Bait

Deciding what to place at the tip of the fishing line may make a big difference in the effectiveness of your expedition. Mealworms are often the best option as feeders for fishing. They’re one of the most popular and easiest-to-care-for fish feeder bugs.

When it comes to bait selection, there seems to be a wide range of options to consider. Despite their diversity, they all seem to have one goal: to entice the fish to get stuck!

As a fisherman, you should experiment with different alternatives seeing what goes and what doesn’t. That is probably one of the key reasons why fishing is so enjoyable.

Henry Donates 55 Rifles for 4-Year-Old Girl’s Kidney Cancer Treatments

RICE LAKE, WI, Feb. 24, 2022

Leading lever action firearm manufacturer, Henry Repeating Arms, is donating a custom series of 55 “Miss Milah’s Miracle” edition rifles to raise funds for four-year-old Milah Schevenius of Decatur, Indiana. Milah was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms’ tumor at just 3-year-old, a rare occurrence affecting less than 10% of all children’s kidney cancer cases. All proceeds of the fundraising campaign will be presented to the Schevenius family to assist with the associated healthcare costs of Milah’s treatments.

In 2021, Milah underwent surgery to remove the affected kidneys, leaving her with less than half of her right kidney and no left kidney. A follow-up surgery was performed in December 2021, after a legion was found on her remaining partial kidney. Additionally, Milah is going through 42 weeks of chemo with radiation treatments at a children’s hospital in Indiana. She loves to color, play with her dolls, have tea parties, and spend time with her sisters. Milah wants to be a doctor when she grows up so that she can help kids going through what she is experiencing.

“Never judge a book by its cover, because this little girl is tough,” says Ryan Knapp, Milah’s grandfather. He continues, “She has been through more than anyone should in less than 4 years of life but does it with a smile and she does not quit.”

Anthony Imperato, CEO and Founder of Henry Repeating Arms says, “To go through what Milah and her family are going through in the middle of a worldwide pandemic is almost incomprehensible.” Imperato continues, “Milah’s courage is nothing short of inspirational, and I hope these rifles or the money raised gives her a reason to gift her family with a smile and a big hug.” Last year, Henry Repeating Arms raised over $75,000 for the families of two sick children with all rifles selling out within hours.

7 Tips For Catching More Fish

Have your last fishing trips ended with an empty bucket? Well, it’s common to go empty-handed when you go fishing. It also happens even with the most experienced enthusiasts every once in a while. But you should never let it stop you from going out and trying again.

Although there are some facets of catching fish that you can’t control, there are also certain techniques and strategies that can dramatically increase your chances of catching more fish.

Choose A Good Fishing Location

The number one tip is to know the best spots for fishing. To catch more fish, you need to know where they live and eat. In this case, research becomes crucial as it will help you find the best fishing locations around the local area.

It’s not that hard to find these places, though, because other fishing enthusiasts may have found the best fishing areas. Like-minded people often share locations on online forums and fishing websites.

Ideally, you should look for areas of water where there is food, cover, and where fish can easily blend in. Some of the proven locations where you can usually catch more fish include bridges, inlets, docks, points, and river banks. However, each fishing spot is unique. So, you will need to do your research first before heading out so you won’t go home with zero catch again.

Bowhunting Turkeys? Why Bow Spider is an Invaluable Accessory

Bowhunters who pursue spring gobblers need stuff, and lots of it. A ground blind. A blind chair. Decoys. Your bow. And all that other stuff. How do you haul it quickly, easily, and safely from your truck to the field in one trip? And what if you’re a run & gun hunter, needing to move often during the day? You almost need to be an octopus to haul it all – unless you incorporate the Bow Spider bow packing system.

Bow Spider is the quickest and easiest hands-free bow retrieval system on the market. Here’s how it works. An aluminum arm attaches to the bow’s riser, and slides into a slot on the lightweight, injection-molded receiver, which can be worn on the included belt or attached via long bolts to other objects, including your backpack. You can choose either to temporarily or permanently mount Bow Spider to your pack. By using the straps provided it can be mounted temporarily. For a permanent or semi-permanent mount you can use the provided bolts. The bow is held securely in place via a gravity-locking system, yet slides out with minimal effort. It’s versatility also allows it to be mounted to the back of your car seat, tree trunks, a waist belt, binocular harness — any flat surface. The bow can be quickly and effortlessly removed with one hand when it’s time to swing back into action.

Now chasing gobblers is simple. Your calls, pruning tools, and other small accessories are in your turkey vest. Binocular and rangefinder on your chest in its harness. The blind on your back, backpack style. The chair in one hand, decoys in a decoy bag either slung over the blind or in the other hand. Your bow securely held in the Bow Spider on your belt. Boom! You’re off to the races with everything you need. Of course, all this can be modified to your individual needs – and the versatility of Bow Spider makes it the perfect accessory to do just that – keeping your hands free of carrying the bow.

The complete Bow Spider bow packing system comes in either green, tan, or black, and has a MSRP of $89.95. To see how easy, it is to use the Bow Spider, check out these video clips:  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bow+spider+packing+system.
