Preparing For Hunting Season? Here Are Some Tools Every Pro Hunter Should Own

As the temperature starts going down, hunters around the world start getting ready for their seasonal hunting trips. There’s no doubt that these outdoor trips are one of the most exciting activities that you can do during winter. However, if you’re not careful while packing your backpack, this trip could turn into an unpleasant experience. Aside from your hunting gear, there are a few items that you should always pack with you. These tools will help you have a safer and more enjoyable trip. Here are the essential tools that every pro hunter must own.

Food and Snacks

Even if you’re planning on a hunt-to-eat trip, you should always be prepared with extra food. Hunting trips can be exhausting, you will be walking for miles and might be climbing as well to reach your destination. All that effort will consume your energy, and if your body is not getting enough nutrition, your sugar levels will decrease and it will affect your hunting skills. Packing a couple of energy bars and canned food will keep your body warm and boost your energy throughout the trip. You will not feel pressured to hunt because you’re hungry, and you’ll be able to focus on hunting.

Knives

Everyone knows that knives are considered one of the most important tools to bring along for any outdoor activity. However, while hunting, you should be mindful of the types of knives you carry. There are mainly two types of knives that are important. A hunting knife and a throwing knife. Even though a throwing knife is not a very easy tool to use if you’re going after a deer, once you learn how to use it, it can be a great weapon on your next adventure. Having one of the finest throwing knives in your backpack will assist you while hunting and can be a great self-defense weapon. On the other hand, a regular hunting knife will still be necessary for skinning, first, aid, and cutting ropes.

Rain Gear

Hunting trips usually involve harsh weather conditions, especially during winter. Even if you have checked the weather forecast several times and you’re sure that it’s not going to rain, you still need to bring rain gear and boots with you. Try to find light rain gear that can easily be folded and carried. Being prepared will allow you to continue hunting even if it starts pouring, allowing you to focus on your prey without being distracted.

Navigation Tools

Smartphones already have navigation and GPS that can show your location, but how reliable are they for an outdoor activity? When you’re out there in the woods, your phone battery could die along with your power bank, or the signal can be weak,  leaving you without any backup. To avoid this situation, you should pack a regular compass and a map. A compass will never fail to show you the direction and it will save you in case you get lost.

Nevada Judge Announces After Hearing That He Will Strike Down Major Portions of New Nevada Gun Law on Constitutional Due Process Grounds in Major Victory for Polymer80, Inc.

On November 23, 2021, in a huge victory for both Polymer80 and the Second Amendment in Nevada, the Hon. Judge John P. Schlegelmilch of the Lyon County, Nevada District Court stated he would be issuing summary judgment in favor of Polymer80, Inc., in their lawsuit against Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, George Togliatti, Director of the Nevada Department of Public Safety, and Mindy McKay, Administrator of the Records, Communications, and Compliance Division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety. The judgment would invalidate and bar enforcement of major portions of Nevada Assembly Bill 286, on due process grounds under the Nevada state constitution.

Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui (D-Las Vegas) sponsored AB286 which passed on straight-party line votes in both the Nevada Assembly and Senate. Gov. Sisolak, a democrat signed AB286 into law in early June 2021. AB286 generally prohibits a person from possessing, purchasing, transporting or receiving any unfinished frame or receiver of a firearm, or assembling any firearm not imprinted with a serial number. Initial violations carry a criminal misdemeanor penalty; repeat violations can be punished by a felony charge.

In deciding to issue summary judgment, Judge Schlegelmilch held that a trial was not needed, and that Polymer80 was immediately entitled to both a Declaratory Judgment that AB286 was unduly and unconstitutionally void for vagueness, and a Permanent Injunction forever banning enforcement of key provisions in the new enactment for that reason. Judge Schlegelmilch, who upon Polymer80’s motion had preliminarily prevented enforcement of those provisions in July 2021, specifically found that Sections 3 and 3.5 of AB286 were unconstitutionally ambiguous in their language criminalizing, among other things, the possession, sale, transfer, transport, and manufacture of “unfinished frames or receivers.” Polymer80 had argued that this said criminalization would threaten its very existence. In that respect, the Court further found that the definition of an “unfinished frame or receiver” incorporated in those two Sections was exceedingly and unconstitutionally vague in its use and reliance upon various terms including, among others, “blank,” “casting,” and “machined body” that were undefined in the statute and did not have accepted common meanings.

In addition, the Court determined that the additional required component of the definition of “unfinished frame or receiver” mandating that a blank, casting, or machined body have reached such a stage of formation that “most of the major machining operations” needed to turn those items into a firearm had been completed was fatally vague and ambiguous. The Court ruled that those terms, alone and together, were so unclear and uncertain that they did not provide fair notice to a Nevadan of ordinary intelligence as to what specific conduct AB286 prohibited, rendering the bill unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Nevada Constitution. The Court also ruled that those vague terms encouraged and effectively authorized arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement against all Nevadans, in that AB286 left the interpretation and application of those nebulous terms entirely to the discretion of governmental authorities, which Nevada Supreme Court decisions have precluded. Finally, Judge Schlegelmilch indicated that he would be issuing a formal written Order in December 2021, encapsulating and memorializing his oral rulings, declaring the cited provisions of AB286 unconstitutionally vague, and barring their enforcement permanently.

“This is a significant victory for Polymer80, Nevadans, and our customers nationwide,” Polymer80 CEO Loran Kelley said. “AB286 is vague and unlawful legislation that targets our company specifically for conducting a lawful business. We will continue to challenge lawless attempts to curtail our rights and the rights of our customers. Polymer80 would like to thank our loyal customers, whose continued support allows us to keep fighting for Second Amendment rights across the country and our attorneys at Greenspoon Marder, LLP who worked tirelessly and never gave up this fight. Polymer80 strongly believes that the Second Amendment is a foundational principal in America that can never be violated. Continuing to fight those who strive to take it away is a core belief of our company. It’s one more example of our company motto, ‘Engage Your Freedom.’”

Collection Software Offers Discount, Donation to CMP on Purchases

NM Collector Software, a digital program for keeping track of a collector’s inventory information, is currently offering a 10 percent discount, matched by a 10 percent donation to the CMP, for anyone making a purchase through its website using the “ODCMP” code.

The software, available for desktop formats, is handy for those looking for a way to keep all of the important details of their collection items, including identification, description, purchase, sale, maintenance, events and more, all in one organized, secure location. The info is stored on the hard drive of a user’s operating system, meaning it can only be accessed if the device itself is accessed – safeguarding confidentiality for the consumer.

“I want to promote civilian marksmanship and the ownership of firearms, so it seems only natural to contribute to the CMP,” said the product’s creator, Clay Pryor.

Clay Pryor is a long-time collector of firearms.

Back in 2000, Pryor started nmCollector.net LLC, where he sold NM Gun Collector Software online. Over the years, he has developed additional software that is compatible with multiple computer operating systems and collection types, like the NM Collector Software Java Edition (JE) and the coinciding NM Collector app for Android in 2011.

Now, Pryor has developed a new product called NM Collector Software Cross Platform, simply known as CP, that provides a unified interface and easy data sharing across several popular platforms like Windows, Mac and Linux, with development for iOS and Android in the works. The latest version is equipped with the most enhanced security to date in order to ensure privacy protection of all data within the program.

Team Federal Shines at the 2021 Fort Benning Multigun Challenge

Team Federal sponsored shooters finished strong at the recent 2021 Fort Benning Multigun Challenge in Fort Benning Georgia. Every fall, the U.S. Army hosts this event at the fort’s recreational shooting complex. Federal supported this year’s match as a Gold Sponsor. Team Federal shooters Tucker Schmidt, Alysia Burrows and Todd Jarrett all performed well among the 234 shooters on hand. Schmidt earning a second-place finish for the match shooting in the Open division, Burrows with second place in the Tac Ops division for the Ladies’ category, and Jarrett finishing in eighth place for the Tac Ops division also earning “Top Senior” for the match.

“Congratulations to all our shooters at this match. The Army Marksmanship Unit are famous for running fun, innovative matches. From all I’ve heard, this one was no exception,” said Federal Ammunition Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “Our Team Federal shooters always do a great job representing our brand and I’m proud of their achievements this weekend.”

“It was a close and heated competition. It came down to the very last stage and it didn’t go my way. I’ll be working hard to come back next year and get the win,” said Schmidt. “My go-to ammo is The Federal Gold Medal line of shotgun and precision rifle ammo, as well as the American Eagle 55-grain for the go-fast rifle portions.”

“In a stiff competition environment like Benning, there really isn’t any margin for error. That’s why knowing your guns and knowing your ammo is a big part of preparation for an event like this,” said Burrows. “Feeding high performance guns with questionable ammo isn’t an option. I’ve always used Federal, even before I was on the team. I know each round is going to perform the same as the last.”

“Todd Jarrett’s Top Senior trophy and top-ten finish certainly was a highlight of the event for Team Federal,” continued Spradling. “Todd is a seasoned competitor and is well respected in the community. We’re excited to have him on board representing our brand with solid performances like this one.”

The U.S. Concealed Carry Association Hosts Online Discussion with Congresswoman Claudia Tenney on Recent U.S. Supreme Court Hearing, Preserving the Right to Self-Defense

West Bend, WI – U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) President and Founder Tim Schmidt hosted an online broadcast with U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney (NY-22) around the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen case that was recently heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.  This case is challenging an antiquated and unconstitutional New York state law that requires residents to demonstrate “proper cause” in order to receive concealed carry licenses.

Earlier this year, the USCCA along with several other leading Second Amendment organizations filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in this case arguing that the right to carry outside one’s home goes to the heart of the right to “keep and bear arms” protected by the Second Amendment.

Today, at least seven other states have similar laws to the one being challenged in New York which prevent responsible Americans from protecting themselves.  As a result “there are millions of Americans right now who would love to be able to exercise their right to bear arms in self-defense but can’t because the state they live in refuses to recognize that right at all,” said Schmidt.

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney also led an amicus brief with more than 175 of her U.S. House colleagues defending the right to concealed carry under the Second Amendment. “We have rights at stake right now… The second most important right we have obviously is the right to bear arms.”  The Congresswoman goes on to say that “the fact that we even have a law that would put such restrictions on lawful carry especially outside the home is unbelievable. But thankfully the Supreme Court seems to be moving in a direction to give us all our rights back…”

According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, support for stricter gun laws is at its lowest level since 2005 and the number of voters who support stricter gun laws is down almost 10 points since a poll conducted in April.  Depending on the Supreme Court’s decision, the language used in the final opinion could have long-standing effects on the constitutionality of other state laws.  “The Supreme Court finding this New York law unconstitutional will also help lay the groundwork for our elected officials at the federal level in Washington to see that the antiquated patchwork of concealed carry laws in the US needs to change and that we need solutions like National Concealed Carry Reciprocity,” stated Schmidt.

Bow Spider Film Makes It into Western Hunter Magazine Film Festival Finals

David Merrill owner of Bow Spider, the quickest and easiest bow retrieval system on the market, is pleased to announce that his first film, “A Day in the Brooks” has made it into Western Hunter Magazine’s film festival finals. This 44-minute film chronicles he and his 65-year old father’s Alaskan Dall sheep adventure. It is one of five films in the Professional Long category. The other three categories in the film festival include Professional Short, Amateur Long and Amateur Short.

“We are very honored to have been selected for the festival,” said Merrill. “This film is near and dear to my heart as it will be one of the final adventures in the Brooks Range with my dad. I hope everyone enjoys watching it as much as we enjoyed capturing and creating it. Never miss the moment. Grab your bow and go!”

A panel of industry judges was carefully selected to determine the category finalists. With the finalists determined voting has now gone to the public. Anyone is eligible to vote for their favorite film in each category. To view the films and to register to vote visit:  https://filmfest.westernhunter.net/.

“We started the Western Hunter Film Festival to give talented amateur and professional film makers a platform to present their work.,” said Chris Denham, marketing director and co-owner of Western Hunter Magazine. “ I was especially excited to see the shows submitted in the professional long category, knowing there would be some incredible stories. “A Day in the Brooks” along with the other four finalists is everything I hoped to see!”
