DNR Urges Ice Anglers To Protect Waterways From Aquatic Invasive Species

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and UW-Extension are asking anglers to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species when ice fishing this winter.

While aquatic invasive species have made their way into Wisconsin’s waterways, anglers can reduce transmission by checking for and removing any mud or plant material clinging to their gear, including sleds used to haul supplies, before leaving fishing spots.

Invasive species are non-native plants, animals and diseases that cause great ecological, environmental or economic harm. Aquatic invasive species can crowd out native plants and animals and threaten the quality of boating and fishing in Wisconsin waters.

Two common non-native aquatic plants in Wisconsin include the curly-leaf pondweed and Eurasian watermilfoil which remain hardy in winter giving them an advantage over native aquatic plants. Although the plant-like algae starry stonewort, a relative newcomer aquatic invasive species in Wisconsin, dies back for winter, its tiny, star-shaped bulbils may be present in the mud drawn up from augers. The larvae of invasive snails and mussels can also be found in the water and mud during winter.

For more information about aquatic invasive species, including where they are prohibited and restricted in Wisconsin, visit this DNR webpage.

USA CLAY TARGET LEAGUE PARTNERS WITH THE GIVING BLOCK TO ACCEPT CRYPTOCURRENCY DONATIONS

Eagan, Minnesota – The USA Clay Target League is excited to announce a partnership with cryptocurrency fundraising leader The Giving Block that will now allow youth shooting sports supporters to donate in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

“The importance of youth shooting sports participation cannot be understated.” Said John Nelson, President of the USA Clay Target League. “Our athletes are the future of hunting, the future of conservation, and the future of America’s traditional outdoor heritage. The League is proud to be the leader in introducing youth to shooting sports, and we’re excited to provide those who understand the importance and promise of the League’s high school and college shooting programs a new opportunity to contribute to their success.

With nearly 40,000 participating athletes in the 2020-2021 school year, the 501(c3) non-profit USA Clay Target League is the largest youth clay target shooting sport program in the nation. The League offers trap, skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand leagues to secondary and postsecondary schools across the country.

As Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have increased in value and visibility in the last few years, the number of donors looking for opportunities to donate with cryptocurrency has skyrocketed. The Giving Block is expected to process over $100 million in cryptocurrency donations by the end of 2021, and projects over $1 billion in donations in 2022.

“The League has had a number of inquiries from supporters that wished to donate cryptocurrency in the past year,” Nelson said. “We are very pleased to now have a platform in place for more donors to support the future of hunting and shooting sports.”

Mule Deer Foundation and Wyoming Game and Fish Department Complete Over $900,000 in Projects Under Migrations Grant

The Mule Deer Foundation and Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) recently completed projects to improve mule deer conservation in priority areas identified in the Wyoming State Action Plan associated with DOI Secretarial Order 3362. The projects were implemented using more than $900,000 in funding provided by the Bureau of Land Management in a grant administered through National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s “Improving Habitat Quality in Western Big Game Winter Range and Migration Corridor Program.”  The grant focused on the Sublette and Platte Valley mule deer herds and included 56.5 miles of fencing modifications, 20,573 acres treated for invasive plants, and removing encroaching junipers on 1,285 acres.

“The Mule Deer Foundation appreciates our partnership with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to accomplish so much together in these priority mule deer corridors and winter ranges,” commented Mule Deer Foundation President/CEO Joel Pedersen. “By modifying fencing in critical areas, deer and other wildlife will be able to move more freely across the landscape, and the habitat restoration projects will improve forage to keep them healthier through the winter.”

The majority of funding was prioritized for the Sublette mule deer herd. The WGFD treated 10,000 acres of cheatgrass through aerial application, and 280 acres in the Horse Creek wildfire and Soapholes project were treated manually with backpack sprayers targeting pepperweed and a variety of noxious thistles. In addition, 45 miles of fence improvements were made in the Half Moon and Black Butte Wildlife Habitat Management Areas, the Daniel Public Access Area (managed by WGFD) and with partners on private lands.

For the Platte Valley mule deer herd, four fencing projects converted 11.5 miles of fence to wildlife friendly designs. In addition, invasive plant treatments focused on leafy spurge management (9,173 acres) in three separate areas, and cheatgrass treatments (1,120 acres) on the Pennock Wildlife Habitat Management Area. Junipers encroaching into sagebrush rangelands were thinned on 1,285 acres using lop and scatter and mastication techniques.

“Wyoming Game and Fish Department appreciates the opportunity to work with partners to implement these important projects in mule deer migratory habitat,” said Doug Brimeyer, Wildlife Division Deputy Chief for WGFD. “Completing additional conservation work on the ground continues to be one of the success stories from Department of the Interior Secretarial Order 3362 and other similar initiatives that prioritize vital wildlife habitats.”

The Deer Hunting Guide: Tips to Your First Successful Deer Hunt

If you’re like me, then you’ve dreamed about the day that you finally get to go on your very first deer hunting trip. You might not know what equipment to bring, where to find a good spot, or how long it will take to bag your first deer. Whatever the reason for wanting to go out there and hunt some deer, you’ll learn everything you need to know about your first successful deer hunting.

Gather the Right Equipment

The absolute most crucial thing that you’ll need for a successful deer hunt is the right equipment. You don’t want to go out there and try hunting with some cheap bow or gun- you’re just going to end up being very disappointed. Instead, do your research on what type of weapon will work best for the game that you’re trying to hunt, and make sure that you get all of the necessary equipment, including the suitable hunting knives, spotting scope, call device, rangefinder, and more.

Gear Up Properly

In addition to having the right equipment, you’ll also want to make sure that you gear up properly. This means wearing clothes that will help you camouflage with your surroundings and proper boots and gloves for the weather conditions. You’ll also want to consider what type of terrain you’ll be hunting in. For example, are you working with a thick brush, or are you out on the open plains? Depending on where your hunt will take place, these conditions can make a huge difference in what type of gear that you need to bring along.

Be Prepared for Anything

The most important thing about deer hunting is being prepared for anything and everything. This means that you need to ensure that your deer hunting gear is in order. Before going out on a hunt, always check everything carefully and make adjustments where necessary.

Take the time to study deer habits before setting out for any hunting trip. You can also go through guides like B.C. hunting guide & outfitter to acquaint yourself with what’s expected of you in the hunting fields. If possible, go over maps or plans with someone who has been there already.

Big Horn Armory (BHA) to Donate $2,000 to the Wyoming Wildlife Federation (WWF) for November Pay it Forward Program

BHA’s donation will go to the WWF’s Hunters for the Hungry Program to help provide 2,300 wild game meals to food-insecure families during this holiday season.

Big Horn Armory (BHA), makers of big-bore firearms, will be donating $2,000 to the Wyoming Wildlife Federation (WWF) to help support its Hunters for the Hungry Program (H4H). This donation will go toward the costs incurred by processing and results in nearly 2,300 donated wild game meals for food-insecure families within Wyoming.

“For the second year in a row, we are happy to donate a portion of our November sales proceeds to help out our community in Wyoming during the holiday season. This guarantees that more Wyoming citizens will get a healthy wild game meal during this most wonderful time of the year,” commented Greg Buchel, president of Big Horn Armory.

WWF’s H4H Program began in the fall of 2018. It has grown from supporting two to four counties in 2020. The counties include Sheridan, Johnson, Teton, and Fremont and H4H is looking to deepen the hunter donations to those incredible partnering processors in the coming years. During the last three years, over 14,100 meals have been donated through the program to food-insecure families in these counties and the Wind River Reservation.

“We cannot thank Big Horn Armory enough for their Pay It Forward campaign going to the Wyoming Wildlife Federation this year. Big Horn Armory serves as such a great role model for local Wyoming companies giving back to the community around them. Their donation goes right back into the work that supports people in need with Hunters for the Hungry, a program that is crucial during this time of year. Thanks again to Greg and his team for their donation to the Federation,” commented Dwayne Meadows, executive director of WWF.

New CMP Air Rifle and Air Pistol Rulebook and Competition Program

By Gary Anderson, DCM Emeritus

The CMP’s selection of 2022 competition rulebooks, which it is beginning to release now, includes one new rulebook, the  1st Edition CMP Air Rifle and Air Pistol Competition Rules.  A copy of this new rulebook is already posted on the CMP website at  https://thecmp.org/wpcontent/uploads/2021/12/2022CMPAirGunRulebook.pdf.  Additional information about the CMP Air Rifle and Air Pistol Program can be found on the CMP website at  https://thecmp.org/competitions/cmp-air-rifle-and-air-pistol-program/.

The CMP has noteworthy credentials for being an organization that sanctions and conducts air rifle and air pistol matches. The CMP established the two finest 10m air gun facilities in the USA, the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry, Ohio and the CMP Competition Center at Anniston, Alabama.  Both centers regularly host major airgun championships that attract competitors from all over the country.  The CMP has a mobile 10-meter electronic target range that supports major air gun matches for organizations like USA Shooting and the NCAA in other locations around the country.  The CMP is a national leader in the Junior Three-Position Air Rifle program that has become the most popular junior rifle competition activity in the USA.  The CMP conducts monthly matches with 60-shot Air Rifle standing and Air Pistol events on its Camp Perry and Anniston ranges.  The CMP organizes annual National Matches Air Gun Events that attract up to 2,500 entries in ten different Air Rifle and Air Pistol events.  The CMP Competitions Department currently receives regular requests from shooting clubs that want the CMP to sanction their air gun matches.  The CMP is already a leader in promoting Air Rifle and Air Pistol competitions for juniors and seniors and is introducing this new rulebook as part of a planned expansion of its airgun competition program.

The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry, Ohio is recognized as one of the finest air gun ranges in the world. This facility features 80 10m electronic targets, plenty of room for spectators, classrooms, a huge staging area for team preparations and a staff that is skilled in conducting top quality competitions.

The new rulebook will govern National Matches Air Gun Championships and a full schedule of matches on CMP 10m ranges as well as any airgun matches that CMP-affiliated clubs sanction with the CMP.  The rules follow ISSF Rules as closely as possible.  Competitors in CMP airgun matches should not expect any substantial differences between ISSF, USA Shooting and the new CMP Rules.  Air Rifles, Air Pistols and other equipment that are legal under ISSF or USA Shooting Rules will be legal in CMP sanctioned airgun competitions.  Here are airgun program features that are defined in the new rulebook:

1.      Air Rifle Event.  The standard air rifle competition event is the 60-shot standing position event.  This event may be fired on electronic targets with a 15-minute preparation and sighting time and a 75-minute record fire time, or it may be fired on paper targets.  If a paper target range has target carriers, firing may be done on single or 5-bull targets with 90-minute record fire times.  Paper target events may also use 10-bull targets with competitors going downrange to post and retrieve targets.  The new rules seek to standardize this procedure by calling for two 10-bull targets to be hung at one time and by providing for three 20-shot record fire stages preceded by 10- and 3- minute preparation and sighting times.

Colt Anaconda Wins Ballistic Magazine’s Prestigious “Best Revolver” Award for 2021

The powerful Colt Anaconda .44 Magnum winds its way into the company’s popular snake gun revolver series and crushes the competition. Ballistic Magazine recently announced, “Colt has officially won our 2021 Ballistic’s Best “Best Revolver” category.” The big, bold 2021 Anaconda was entirely re-designed with an oversized Python action, creating a double-action revolver worthy of its pedigree.

Ballistic Magazine’s writers and editors evaluate dozens of different firearms each year; 60 in 2021 alone! Shooters fire thousands of rounds downrange in a grueling series of tests, assessing guns for accuracy, reliability and more. They record each in the Ballistic scoring system and tabulate the results. Outstanding performers from each category rise to the top. And the winners receive the coveted Ballistic Best Award for 2021. The list doesn’t cater to advertisers – it’s an experience-based and data-driven review of the guns Ballistic thinks readers want to own and shoot.

So, what is so special about the 2021 Colt Anaconda? And why did it win the Ballistic Best Award? Because the Anaconda is an unstoppable huntsman’s sidearm. Here is a list of its premium features. A linear leaf spring action provides a non-stacking, smooth-as-glass trigger pull. A bulked-up solid stainless steel frame adds strength and durability for the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge while recoil-absorbing Hogue grips soak up magnum recoil. The Anaconda includes adjustable, interchangeable sights for optimum shooting at the range or in the woods. Shooters wanting to mount an optic will appreciate the Anaconda’s drilled and tapped frame. The 2021 Anaconda Colt has 6- and 8-inch ventilated barrel options and a recessed target crown for muzzle protection.

The Colt revolver family just got a lot bigger with the addition of the Anaconda. Ballistic’s testing and accolades highlight why the Anaconda is a best-in-class revolver.

Colt’s Manufacturing Company LLC (www.colt.com) is one of the world’s leading designers, developers and manufacturers of firearms. Knockaround Snow Goggles for Hunting Late Season?

We picked up a pair of the Knockaround glasses this summer. We were looking for a good pair of sunglasses to wear out on the water and a pair that, if we lost them, we would not cry over a huge hit to the pocketbook. Now we just found the new Knockaround Snow Goggles. and compared with other snow goggles that are the market these are perfect for late season hunting in snow, wind and rain when it is cold.

The first time that I saw snow goggles on the hunt was while filming a buffalo hunt in 50 mph winds and negative 50 degrees about 20 miles south of the Canadian border in Montana. It was so cold the LCD screen on my camera froze and would not work. Our hunter got frostbite on his nose and could not feel the tips of his fingers. The guide looked cool as could be and told us that his goggles kept his eyes from tearing up in the brutal wind. Since then a pair of snow goggles has been a part of my kit for really cold late season hunts.

Knockaround Snow Goggles won’t break the bank, they are clear and easy to keep protected in the case that comes with them and most models have more than one lens that comes with them. All orders over $40.00 offer free shipping. These are worth getting to keep your vision clear regardless of how ugly the weather gets on your hunt. All orders over $40.00 offer free shipping.

Shop the Knockaround Snow Goggles this winter!

I was compensated for this post. This post also contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.
