Federal Ammunition Supports the Boone and Crockett Club’s 31st Big Game Awards as Centennial Sponsor

Federal Ammunition has signed on as the Centennial Sponsor of the Boone and Crockett Club’s 31st Big Game Awards that will be held July 21-23, 2022, in Springfield, Missouri. The event recognizes the biggest heads, horns, and antlers from North America entered into the Boone and Crockett Club’s record book during the last three years. The 31st Big Game Awards coincides with the centennial anniversary of the National Collection of Heads and Horns as well as  Federal’s 100-year anniversary as one of the largest ammunition manufacturing companies in America.

“Federal Ammunition is proud to be the Centennial Sponsor of the 31st Big Game Awards to celebrate the synergy between our 100 years in business and the conservation of the nation’s wildlife species,” commented Federal’s Conservation Manager, Jon Zinnel. “Federal has long supported conservation efforts both through the excise taxes we pay on the sale of ammunition as part of the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration program, as well as through philanthropic support of conservation and advocacy organizations,” stated Zinnel. “We are excited to celebrate the successes of hunters having the opportunity to hunt amazing animals only because of extraordinary efforts to conserve them and the habitat on which they depend.”

When the National Collection of Heads and Horns was dedicated in May 1922, Boone and Crockett Club member and the collection’s original curator William T. Hornaday noted that “The National Collection of Heads and Horns was founded and formed as a duty owed to the American people and to the vanishing big game of the world… As wild animal extermination now is proceeding all over the world, it is saddening to think that 100 years hence many of the species now shown in our collection will have become totally extinct.” However, most of those North American species have not gone extinct and, in fact have thrived thanks largely to sustainable wildlife management and the consistent funding provided through the excise tax paid by companies like Federal Ammunition.

In response to public interest generated by the National Collection of Heads and Horns in the 1920s, and increased interest in the recovery and conservation of big game species, the Club established an official measurement and scoring system for trophy big game. The National Collection and the measurement system were initially conceived to record species of North American big game thought to be vanishing. As conservation efforts began to pay dividends and populations recovered, so did the number of mature male specimens. Wildlife managers and others in the scientific community soon recognized that the system was an effective means of tracking the success of new conservation policies and programs. Trophy entry into the Boone and Crockett Club’s records program now occurs during three-year periods, followed by a public display of the finest trophies entered in each category and the Big Game Awards banquet. Only the top trophies in each category are invited to final awards judging and only invited trophies remeasured by the Judges Panel are eligible to receive awards.

“The nation’s awakening to the conservation crisis a century ago led to the passage of legislation supported by the Boone and Crockett Club, including the excise tax paid by the shooting sports industry that has largely bankrolled our conservation successes,” commented Tony A. Schoonen, chief executive officer of the Boone and Crockett Club. “It is fitting that the centennial of Federal and the centennial of a display that helped to raise that awareness coincide. I have had the pleasure of working with Federal for over 20 years and their commitment to conservation is significant and very real. We are happy to have Federal as our Centennial Sponsor of the 31st Big Game Awards so that we can celebrate our conservation successes together.”

onX Hunt Examines New Wave of Hunters,How Hunting Has Changed During Pandemic

Missoula, Montana — onX Hunt, in partnership with Southwick Associates, has completed a deep dive look into the new wave of hunters that have entered the space in the past few years, with a focus on those who started hunting at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. In addition, onX Hunt also looked at more experienced hunters and their reactions to the new faces.

While everyone acknowledges the pandemic has sparked a resurgence in interest in the outdoors, no one really had a handle on the size of this wave until now. 2020 saw a 25% increase in hunters in the United States. This comes after decades of decline that had hunting advocates and state agencies scrambling with R3 (Retain, Recruit, Reactivate) efforts.

Not surprisingly, most of the new hunters cited COVID-related reasons for having the interest and time to take up hunting. What many may find surprising is the degree to which existing hunters are excited by this influx. Complaints of overcrowding or inexperienced hunters seemed plenty, but the data show that 65% of existing hunters support the new crop, compared to only 27% who had concerns.

Diversity is also improving, with 17% of these new hunters being non-white, and 22% of them identifying as female. This new generation is also overwhelmingly motivated by the ability to harvest their own meat, with 47% reporting that as their primary motivation to hunt. As questions about food safety increase, so has the desire to control personal food chains.

A few numbers also stood out, primarily when hunters were asked where they turned for education and guidance. The impact of the past few decades of lost hunters is readily apparent as a family member only makes up 20% of mentors for new hunters. Instead, this new generation has relied on friends who hunt (more than 40%) or a spouse/partner (20%).

A Guide for the New Hunter

Okay, so you found the Outdoor Network and binged watched the latest hunting show, giving you hunting fever! Whitetail season is just around the corner; but, now what? Where do you even start? Stepping into the hunting world for the first time can be overwhelming to say the least. Good news, you’re not the first person to “start hunting.” Many of us didn’t come from hunting families or the passion got lost somewhere between Great Grandpa and you. Luckily, the sources of information this day in age are endless. Here’s a short guide to get you from the couch to putting meat in your freezer!

Off To A Great Start…

There’s a few hills you have to climb before you can get into the woods! First step on your journey is taking your hunter’s safety course. Many states have partnered with the NRA online interactive course, making it convenient. Now, you’ll have a foundation or get a good reminder on the paramount of safety. Becoming aquatinted with your States hunting seasons and regulations will follow this step. The most popular Whitetail seasons are Archery, Muzzleloader and Rifle. Depending on where you are hunting special Shotgun zones may offer another option. So, your selected tool will weigh heavily on where and how you hunt. Now, I bet you already feel the distance between you and that whitetail growing; but, it’s closer than you think!

It’s all in the prep work!

We could get caught up all day discussing selecting the right camo pattern, comparing brands and what gear you should have. This article is here to help you with the basics. Its key when selecting your gear to pay attention to the climate you’ll be hunting in! You don’t want to get caught in early season gear when hunting the winters of the Northern states! The basic rule of thumb is you want to break up your silhouette so whether you’re wearing hand-me-down camo or top of the line gear the whitetail won’t discriminate! However, how you prep that camo is a crucial piece in hunting success. Now, if you talk to the old-timers they all have tips and tricks on how they store their hunting clothes to make it smell more like the outdoors. Nonetheless, I’m just here to say make sure you’re washing your gear in non-scented laundry detergent. You can choose from a variety at your local sporting goods section. Sense of smell is the Whitetails biggest defense! You may have heard the expression “that doe blew me.” In most instances a deer will smell you before actually seeing you. It’s a crucial course of action to keep it out of contact with other human smelling items, as much as possible. You can spend money on fancy scent-controlled storage bags; but, I’ve have used just your basic vacuum storage bags you pick up at the department store and it works just fine. The point I’m getting to here is all the nice gear that makes the outdoors comfortable and easy will come with time; but, not something to hinder you from getting into the woods and seeing that Whitetail!

Both companies have worked with local universities such as ODU, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University, William & Mary and the University of Virginia to attract and develop young talent (most often from the technology and coding disciplines) and where able, promote them to full-time associates. The hiring of Zahniser and Tillinghast is an extension of these efforts.
