Field Dressed Venison to Become Available

NDA and WDNR Provide Community Support through Venison Donations

The Coulee Country Branch of the National Deer Association is excited to announce its latest donation plan which brings field dressed venison to those in the Wisconsin area. Through much of the Coulee Region the deer herd is in over abundance. To help trim the deer herd to healthy levels, many of the members of the Coulee Country Branch will be harvesting and donating venison.

“This is a great way for hunters to give back to the community,” said Kim Zuhlke of the local Coulee Country Branch of the NDA. “The field dressed venison that comes out of this operation is a sustainability grown and high-quality source of protein, so we’re happy to be providing this to the community on top of helping to counteract over abundance.”

For those looking to receive a field dressed deer, the Coulee Country Branch is now collecting names. To be eligible, send contact information to [email protected]. The deer lymph nodes will be submitted for free CWD testing and the recipient will be responsible for the processing of the deer.

In a complimentary program hunters will also be donating deer through the WNDR deer donation program which helps facilitate the dispersal of ground venison to the area’s food pantries. Both programs will have venison available as the fall hunting season progresses.

SEVR Introduces Ti 1.75 Broadhead for Blended Penetration and Cut Diameter

The NEW SEVR Ti 1.75 has been developed and optimized for both penetration and cut diameter.  A perfect blend that hits the sweet spot of overall broadhead performance. Suitable for both vertical bows and crossbows with no speed limit, the Titanium 1.75 benefits from a swept-back blade angle and a true 1.75” cut diameter.

The Titanium 1.75 is a premium rear-deploy broadhead designed to penetrate deeply while providing a lethal 1.75” wound channel for optimized penetration and blood trails. It is assembled with a machined one-piece TITANIUM ferrule and precision-ground tip.

SEVR’s patented Lock-and-Pivot non-barbed blades lock open on impact. The blades then pivot as needed to keep arrows driving straight through game, even on steep quartering shots and bone impacts. This increases penetration versus regular rear-deploy non-pivoting broadheads.

SEVR’s Stretch Cut blade effect stretches the hide while cutting for a larger-than-blade wound diameter, resulting in bigger blood trails and easier recovery.

For hunting practice, SEVR’s exclusive patented Practice Lock keeps the blades locked and contained. Practice with actual broadheads to verify true point-of-impact without dulling blades.

The Guardian Firearm Retention Program Fixes the Mistake Most Gun Owners Make

Carrying a firearm is a right and a responsibility. Unfortunately, most firearm training focuses on drawing and firing weapons at various distances. Most people forget, or completely ignore, that the decision to use a firearm for self-defense usually happens after a verbal altercation has escalated out of control. When this happens, the threat is either in personal space or physically attacking and eliminates the opportunity to draw and aim a weapon effectively. Now, there is a higher probability that an attacker can obtain the firearm.

Knowing how to draw and fire a weapon safely is not enough. Anyone carrying a firearm must be able to maintain complete control over their weapon at all times. The Self Defense Company has introduced the solution to complete weapon retention through their Guardian Firearms Retention Program.

The Guardian Firearms Retention program provides an efficient and easy-to-digest set of lessons that are simple enough to implement immediately and effectively. The curriculum covers handgun and long gun retention for any possible scenario, either standing or on the ground. There is a strong emphasis on non-lethal defensive tactics to prevent a firearm from being taken and preventing the overall use of a firearm in a conflict.

There is no substitute for proper training. The Self Defense Company understands that the first step to avoiding a potentially deadly interaction is altogether avoiding the situation. However, they also know that it is not always a possibility. The Guardian Firearm Retention program allows carriers to keep their firearms on them at all times, making even the most dangerous situation much less deadly. Usually $199, the Guardian Firearm Retention program is available for only $67, with lifetime access and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Make the Wind an Ally with the Scent Thief® Wafer

Experience the future of scent control with the Scent Thief® Wafer, the best companion to Scent Thief Field Spray. This innovation revolutionizes hunting with No Smell Technology and allows hunters to use the wind to their advantage.

The Scent Thief Wafer is designed for field usage, using natural forces to give hunters the predator advantage. Simply hang the wafer downwind on a tree branch above a climbing stand or in a bush next to a blind. Let the wind carry its scent-blocking power far and wide to create an impenetrable “No Smell Area,” concealing your presence from even the keenest noses.

For maximum effectiveness, pairing the Scent Thief Wafer with the Scent Thief Field Spray is recommended. While the wafer works well in light or no-wind conditions, combining it with the spray ensures complete and continuous scent control, especially in gusty conditions. This key advantage ensures long-lasting scent elimination during extended hunting trips.

While not every scent control solution delivers, the Scent Thief Wafer remains unwavering in its effectiveness. What sets the Scent Thief Wafer apart is its oil-based formula, which evaporates at a slower rate than traditional water-based sprays. A dry wafer can be recycled by spraying down with Scent Thief field spray. However, the formula used in the original wafer is a stronger, more concentrated formula, so an original wafer will be more effective than a recycled one.

Each set of wafers, conveniently stored in a resealable pouch, will last at least two full days or four hunts. The Scent Thief Wafer is a game changer in hunting and scent control. With the Scent Thief Wafer and Field Spray, hunters can confidently step into the woods, knowing they have the edge with this killer combination.

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Apples and Crabapples

By themselves or as a supplement to food plots, mast orchards can attract and hold more wildlife on any property. One benefit of orchards is that they require less effort to maintain once established. They also add more diversity; by planting the right combination and variety of mast trees can significantly widen the window of attractiveness to any land.

Most people think of mast orchards as nut-producing trees like chestnuts and oaks. But soft mast producers, like apple and crabapple trees, add greater diversity to wildlife banquets, providing fruit and appeal to a different and broader variety of wildlife species during the seasons.

Apples

Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers an assortment of apples, each differing in chilling requirement, the degree of winter temperatures necessary to induce the tree to break dormancy and begin flowering and bearing. They list the Plant Hardiness Zones that each variety is best suited for, and they offer some older varieties that are disease-resistant, so they require less attention.

Below is a comparison of the different species of apples Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers.

Beat The October Lull With Big & J LIQUID LUCK

The October lull is one of the most dreaded times for a whitetail deer hunter. After coming out of their summer feeding patterns, bucks begin to change everything about their daily routine. During the first three weeks of October, both bucks and does seem to take a pause before the pre-rut kicks in during the last week of October and into the first week of November. The pause in buck behavior is often referred to as the October lull.

When a buck’s antlers harden and they shed their velvet, the competition to become the dominant buck begins. At the end of September and into the first few days of October, bucks start to spar with each other, and the bachelor group they have been a part of throughout the summer breaks off as they go their separate ways. Bucks begin to move at night, and the acorns begin to fall. When bucks move primarily at night and remain in the timber where their favorite food is falling from the sky, deer movement seems boring, which is why this period has been coined the October lull. If only there were a way to continue to attract deer and get within close range of bucks during the limited daylight hours, deer hunting might not seem like such a lull.

Big & J’s LIQUID LUCK may be the missing piece of the puzzle when hunters struggle during the October lull. LIQUID LUCK is an attractant spray that allows the hunter to spray the long-range aroma into the air or onto the foliage, ground, and other surfaces to attract deer from far distances.

In some states, the use of bait or feed is prohibited during the hunting season. With Big & J LIQUID LUCK, hunters can use the same long-range attracting power of Big & J but in the form of Liquid Luck, which is legal in most regions. Even though deer primarily feed on acorns during the lull, the strong aroma of Liquid Luck brings deer into close range.

The pungent aroma of LIQUID LUCK can be used for more than attracting deer to a specific area. LIQUID LUCK spray can also help hide the hunter’s scent when trying to attract deer into close range. No longer does the hunter need to spend their hard-earned money on expensive scent-controlling products; by simply spraying Liquid Luck into the air or their clothes, deer fill their nose with the irresistible smell of Big & J and not the alarming smell of humans. With the small, compact 8-ounce can, hunters can keep Liquid Luck in their pocket or backpack, ready to attract and distract deer.

Swagger Bipods QD Series, Ideal for Western Hunting

For many hunters, kicking off another big game season is spent traveling to the western United States to hunt screaming bull elk or a monster mule deer. Whether hiking up and down the majestic Rocky Mountains, trekking through the plains, or foothills farther north, the hunt will be demanding. In sharp contrast to deer hunting, hunters cannot sit in a treestand or blind and wait for the game to come into close range. Western hunting requires packing a firearm and a large backpack full of all the essential gear the hunter may need. To make it more challenging, the hunter must travel the rough terrain until they find an animal, get into close range, and find an area where they can make the shot.

When a giant bull elk or a mature mule deer is spotted, the hunter only has a limited time to set up and make the shot. Quick Adapt Technology that the QD series has allows the bipods to attach and detach in seconds. If the hunter needs to move to a different area, the QD can stay attached to the rifle or quickly detach, allowing the hunter to quickly move to a different area. The QD series provides the proper shooting position in any terrain, giving the shooter control, maneuverability, and stability, unlike conventional shooting sticks or bulky shooting rests.

When western hunting, you have to make quick decisions, and long hikes are involved. Sometimes the elk or mule deer you see can be over a mile away; having lightweight bipods or shooting sticks can make the trek easier. The QD weighs only 15 ounces and can outperform other bipods because of its 14” to 42” range. The QD is like having a bipod and shooting stick in one. The QD series attaches quickly to any firearm and allows the hunter to maintain a proper shooting position when sitting, kneeling, or prone. The QD series is ideal for carrying along or quickly packing into a bag until ready to use.

Swagger Bipods has developed the perfect bipod that meets all the western hunting big game demands. The QD series is ideal for carrying along or quickly packing into a bag until ready to use. With Swagger’s Quick Adapt Technology, the QD’s attach to a firearm within seconds to give the hunter a solid shooting rest no matter where the hunt takes them.

Shaping the Future with Missouri’s First Governor’s Mentored Deer Hunt

Over the weekend, the Missouri Department of Conservation hosted the first Governor’s Mentored Deer Hunt, marking a significant milestone in wildlife conservation and the preservation of hunting heritage in the state. The event occurred during Missouri’s new antlerless rifle season and was made possible through partnerships with prominent organizations committed to the cause.

Mentored hunts occurred across several counties, offering an invaluable opportunity for both new hunters and landowners facing challenges with increasing deer populations. Partnerships with the Conservation Federation of Missouri, NWTF, National Deer Association, Missouri Hunting Heritage Foundation, Pheasants/Quail Forever, Missouri Disabled Sportsmen, Missouri’s Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, Whitetails Unlimited, ALPS Outdoorz, Dead End Game Calls, MO Woods and Wildlife and Missouri Backcountry Hunters and Anglers played a pivotal role in bringing this event to fruition.

Deer populations have been on the rise across Missouri, particularly in areas where intensive wildlife management practices are in place or regions with a significant agricultural component. Landowners with larger properties have found it challenging to achieve the necessary doe harvest to stabilize or reduce deer populations. The Governor’s Mentored Deer Hunt seeks to address this issue by providing access to these properties during a special antlerless-only rifle season.

One notable advantage of this season’s timing, well in advance of the rut, is its ability to minimize interference with regular hunting activities on these properties, aligning seamlessly with broader efforts to effectively conserve and manage wildlife populations.

Deer hunters play a crucial role in helping state agencies achieve deer management goals by maintaining populations at desirable levels. Declining hunter numbers pose a significant concern for all involved in conservation efforts which sparked the collaborative efforts to recruit, reactivate and retain new hunters (R3 programs).

NWTF Pennsylvania Members, Sporting Community Rally to Stop Misdirected Funds

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The NWTF and the sporting community throughout Pennsylvania rallied to oppose House Bill 1300, which sought to divert $150 million from the Pennsylvania Game Commission Game Fund to other uses, thus vastly reducing the agency’s ability to manage the commonwealth’s wildlife and wildlife habitat. Through the NWTF’s advocacy actions and the Pennsylvania sporting community’s unification, the provision has officially been removed from the bill.

“It was outstanding to see sportsmen and women rally across Pennsylvania to oppose the provision that would take $150 million away from the PGC Game Fund,” said Mitchell Blake, NWTF district biologist for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Maryland. “Hunters play a critical role in not only contributing to the fund, but also safeguarding those hunter-generated dollars from outside pressures and illegitimate uses. It was a great win for Pennsylvania’s wildlife and hunting heritage and hopefully sets a precedent for any future attempts to transfer or divert portions of the Game Fund.”

The PGC and the Game Fund are funded through the sale of hunting licenses, income produced from the state game lands system such as timber sales, and by the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act, which is derived from an excise tax on firearms and ammunition. Diverting money from the PGC Game Fund is in direct violation of the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act and Pennsylvania Title 34 Game Code. Moreover, HB 1300 would have put the PGC at risk of losing eligibility to attain Pittman-Robertson funding (nearly $42 million in 2023).  The attempt to divert funding violates the nearly 100-year-old agreement between the commonwealth and its 840,000 hunters that generate critical funding to manage state wildlife and wildlife habitat.

NWTF staff work with the organization’s volunteers, partners and policymakers to identify and engage on issues that impact wildlife management, lands conservation and hunting rights.

The NWTF’s engagement at the policy and rule-making levels is vital to delivering its mission. Working alongside state- and federal-level legislators and agencies, the NWTF can encourage laws and regulations that protect and bolster our rights as hunters and ensure our ability to deliver conservation effectively and efficiently on the landscape.

The National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW), the association representing shooting sports wholesalers, manufacturers and their trade partners, is pleased to announce that Barnes Bullets & Sierra Bullets will be sponsoring an NASGW Expo Happy Hour on Wednesday, October 25th in Columbus, OH.

“The NASGW Expo provides attendees a great opportunity to connect with industry decision-makers during events like our Happy Hours on the show floor,” said Kenyon Gleason, NASGW President. “The Expo would not be possible without great partners like Barnes Bullets & Sierra Bullets sponsoring our Happy Hours. We appreciate their support and look forward to seeing all of our members in Columbus.”

The NASGW Expo will be held on October 24 – October 27 at the GCCC (Greater Columbus Convention Center) in Columbus, OH. The Expo is the premier event for shooting sports wholesalers and manufacturers to review current market conditions, forecast future sales, and plan for the upcoming year.

“Each year the NASGW Expo is a well thought out and cleanly executed event,” said Michael Painter, Barnes Bullets and Sierra Bullets Director of Sales, Marketing and Product Management. “It’s a great opportunity to meet with our valued business partners, as well as get an early pulse on the industry for the following year. Barnes and Sierra are proud to attend this event every year and are honored to participate as a sponsor in 2023.”

The NASGW Expo is one of the most productive events within the shooting sports industry. It is a closed event for NASGW Members, creating a very productive business environment for Expo attendees. Exhibitors and attendees value the smaller, meeting-focused event that provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to connect with their partners in a short period, to plan for the year ahead.
