Waterfowl hunters: Do your part to prevent spread of invasive plants

Phragmites, a non-native, invasive, noxious plant, is spreading rapidly along rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands throughout the state. Officials at Nebraska Game and Parks are asking waterfowl hunters to help keep from making the problem worse.

The plant, which grows up to 15 feet tall, often is used as camouflage for hunting blinds. But moving the plant and its feathery heads containing up to 2,000 seeds from one location to the other can spread those seeds and establish a new population of the troublesome plant.

That is what biologists think occurred at Goose Lake Wildlife Management Area in Rock County. In 2010, they discovered two stands of the common reed in locations that led them to believe it found its way to the lake as camouflage on a hunter’s duck boat. Repeated applications of herbicides have nearly eradicated those stands, but it continues to persist.

A contractor hired by Nebraska Game and Parks uses a helicopter to apply herbicide to phragmites, an invasive, noxious weed, at Niobrara Confluence Wildlife Management Area on the Missouri River near the village of Niobrara. Eric Fowler, NEBRASKAland Magazine/Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

Josh Kounovsky, a Game and Parks wildlife biologist in northeastern Nebraska, says he has seen phragmites leaving the Missouri River and Lewis and Clark Lake on duck boats. That could have contributed to the spread of the plant along roadways throughout the region.

“It’s not the only mode, but it is a mode of transmission,” Kounovsky said.

Union Volunteers Heed the Call For Help at Refuge, Celebrate with Family Birdhouse Build

Laurel, Md.—U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials at the Patuxent Research Refuge in central Maryland reached out to the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) and its members for help to repair dilapidated and hazardous structures that provide access to fishing and wildlife watching. They didn’t need to ask twice.

Through the USA’s Work Boots on the Ground program, eight union volunteers from the Baltimore DC Metro Building Trades, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 51, and the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters used their skills to renovate and overhaul the decking and railings on the Chan S. Robbins Outdoor Education Pavilion in August.

“This education pavilion was completely shut down and nonusable,” said USA Conservation Programs Manager Sam Phipps. “Now it’s open to the public and wheelchair accessible all because of USA and the trades.”

Union volunteers donated 264 hours to renovate the decking and railings on the Chan S. Robbins Outdoor Education Pavilion to make it safe for refuge visitors.

In all, union volunteers donated 264 hours of labor, valued at nearly $14,000, to complete the project.

The Patuxent Research Refuge is unique among wildlife refuges. It’s the largest block of unfragmented forest between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, and it’s a haven for songbirds like the scarlet tanager and wood thrush. It’s also the only refuge established to support conservation research and habitat management.

St. Croix Announces Exclusive Partnership with MITO Material Solutions

75-year-old American fishing rod manufacturer offers expanded performance and increased angler benefits via the world’s only functionalized graphene technology

Graphene is a single-atom-thick honeycomb layer of carbon that is harder than diamond yet more elastic than rubber, tougher than steel yet lighter than aluminum. Graphene is currently the strongest and stiffest material known to man. It’s 200 times stronger than steel, stronger than diamond, and 30 times stronger than Kevlar.

Graphene has been around since 2003, when it was discovered by scientists at the University of Manchester in the UK. It’s been extremely well researched in the 20 years since and is being used in commercial applications ranging from tennis rackets, snow skis, and golf-club shafts to racing cars. It’s also used in electronics, super conductors, textiles, desalination equipment, and even paint.

Until now, “graphene” fly rods available on the market contained a small percentage of graphene nano material contained within the resin of carbon-fiber prepreg. It’s this prepreg material that’s rolled onto a mandrel and cured to create a fly-rod blank. Prepreg with graphene-infused resin is available from a handful of suppliers and has allowed some manufacturers to build fly rods that are reportedly lighter and stronger.

St. Croix Rod, however, has found a better way to use graphene in fishing rods and owns the exclusive rights to do so via a strategic partnership with the progressive Indianapolis-based company, MITO® Material Solutions.

NEBO Presents the New IllumaTrace Blood Tracker

With so much time and effort invested into a big game hunting trek, it comes with little certainty of success. There can be no more frustrating scenario than taking a shot and being unable to harvest the trophy due to receding light and a dwindling blood trail.

NEBO’s latest offering, the IllumaTrace Blood Tracker Flashlight, is a game changer. The IllumaTrace employs revolutionary technology to illuminate blood through an alternating strobe effect that vivifies and dulls blood for easy identification on various backgrounds and terrains.

The IllumaTrace Blood Tracker features dual light modes to allow the user to transition between white light to illuminate the path or choose three blood-tracking strobe rate modes to work in several environments or ambient conditions. The Blood Tracker mode provides an alternating “vivifying” and “fulling” mode to cast a light that enhances or dulls red items based on the LEDs used.

With a range of up to 292 feet, the IllumaTrace Blood Tracker provides the visibility needed in open or dense wood terrain to track blood trails successfully. It is impact-resistant, lightweight, and USB-C rechargeable. With a run time of up to 2 hours and 30 minutes in white light mode, and 3 hours in strobe mode, it provides hours of illumination and tracking capability on a single charge.

Made from anodized aircraft-grade aluminum, the IllumaTrace Blood Tracker has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and the finish is scratch and corrosion-resistant, making it extremely durable and strong while still being lightweight, weighing less than a pound. It is waterproof in up to one meter of fresh water for 30 minutes, so it can be called upon even when an unexpected rainstorm rolls in.
