Nomad Outdoors Killin’ Time Turkey Vests Are a Necessary Addition for All Turkey Hunters This Season

Nomad’s Killin’ Time Turkey Vest is blazing the trail with innovative and purposeful features that provide turkey hunters with a convenient and result-driven system to maximize their chance at success throughout the season.

The Killin’ Time Turkey Vest will undoubtedly be on every turkey-hunting fanatic’s wish list this spring. Offering twenty-eight general and specialized pockets, the Killin’ Time Turkey Vest provides an unlimited amount of close-kept, quiet, and secure storage for a hunt. The keen eyesight of turkeys requires stealth to be successful in the turkey woods, and a lot of gear needs to stay close for easy access and less movement.  The storage pocket design offers tactical placement to provide hunters with effortless access to their gear. There are specialized pockets for a Thermacell® to help ward off warm weather insects, a specific external vertical long box call storage pocket with a chalk pouch and locator sleeve, and mesh storage pockets for four mouth calls. Additional storage in the rear of the vest supplies an adjustable game pouch and space for decoys and accessories, including a specific spot for decoy stakes.

The Killin’ Time Turkey Vest prepares hunters for any scenario the turkey woods have to offer. Some turkey hunts require a run-and-gun style setup to chase after the sounds of a Tom firing off a loud gobble back to a call at first light. On other days a hunter can tuck in on the edge of the field under a tree while the long beard comes in on a string. No matter the situation, the Killin’ Time Turkey Vest provides a convenient setup. The removable stadium seat with magnet attachments allows hunters to quickly remove or reattach their seat cushions when moving about on a hunt. In addition to the convenience, the seat is composed of high-density foam to give hunters comfort and support while they wait. The dual water bottle pockets enhance a hunter’s comfort in the woods, as their hydration won’t suffer during the chase. But that’s not all. Picking morel mushrooms is a favorite addition to many turkey hunts, and this vest provides a stow-away mesh sack just for the occasion.

The Nomad Killin’ Time Turkey Vest is an all-encompassing and versatile hunting tool available in two Mossy Oak® patterns — Bottomland® or Shadow Leaf®.  Both camo patterns have been proven effective and resulted in successful turkey hunts throughout the nation.

23rd Annual Arkansas JAKES Day Sees Record Turnout

The NWTF Arkansas State Chapter and its local chapters have a rich history of delivering the NWTF’s mission in the Natural State, and the 2023 Cleveland County JAKES Day was no exception.

With over 207 kids and an action-packed day of hands-on learning, the NWTF Cutter and Stutters Chapter considers the event one of the best it has ever had in the annual event’s 23 years.

NWTF JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) Days engage youth in outdoor pursuits and instill lifelong traditions. The Cleveland County JAKES Day event included numerous learning stations where kids spoke with experts and engaged with the activities at each station, including hunter and shooting safety, shotgun shooting, taxidermy, animal identification, trapping, off-road vehicle education and more. NWTF volunteers are the driving force that brings together the different experts from the community to make such events successful.

“Our younger volunteers are bringing new, much-needed energy to our events that is infectious,” said Terry Thompson, former NWTF Arkansas State Chapter president and NWTF volunteer for 37 years. “This JAKES Day got not just the kids fired up, but the entire community; that is what it is all about.”

Jimmy Edmond and John Varnell, NWTF Arkansas volunteers and Cleveland County JAKES Day coordinators, raised over $5,000 in donations prior to the event, allowing for meals at the free event and hosting a variety of giveaways for the kids, including 21 firearms.

Ohio Local Marks 50th Straight National Matches Appearance

Since 1907, the National Rifle & Pistol Matches have been a staple event on the historic grounds of Camp Perry in Ohio. Attracting visitors from across the nation (and even across the world), the event has become a revered marksmanship tradition – so much so that many have made it an annual excursion that has spanned across their lifetimes.

Such is the case with Pat Smith, 69, of Tiffin, Ohio, who competed in his 50th National Trophy Individual (NTI) Rifle Match during the 2022 National Matches.

“It’s just something we do, so we keep doing it,” Pat said of the event.

The NTI is one of the most celebrated competitions of the National Matches. The overall competitor is awarded the Daniel Boone Trophy – a historic honor that dates back to 1904. With a course of fire of 200, 300 and 600 yards, the NTI joins some of the best marksmen and women in the country on the range with those who aspire to be, along with others who enter simply for the experience.

Pat began competing at Camp Perry in 1972 and has never stopped (seen here in the early 1980s).

Pat lives less than an hour from Camp Perry, headquarters of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which directs and hosts the National Matches. He first arrived in 1972 with members of the local Tiffin Gun Club who decided to fire in the NTI event.

Henry Repeating Arms Issues Recall Notice for Certain Lever Action .45-70 Rifles

Henry Repeating Arms recently discovered a safety issue affecting certain lever action .45-70 Gov’t rifles manufactured between December 14, 2022, and January 11, 2023. Henry is voluntarily initiating a recall to protect the safety of its customers because, under certain conditions, it is possible that some of these rifles may unintentionally discharge without the trigger being pulled if the hammer is released or dropped from the cocked position. To prevent the possibility of death or serious personal injury, owners of a Henry Repeating Arms lever action .45-70 should discontinue all use until it is determined whether or not the rifle is subject to recall.

Any Henry Repeating Arms firearm obtained before December 2022 is not subject to this recall, and no action is needed.

To determine if a Henry .45-70 lever action rifle is affected, owners should look up the serial number of their firearm at henryusa.com/recall, email [email protected], or call toll-free 1-866-200-2354 (M-F, 9 am ET-5 pm ET).

The safety issue leading to this voluntary recall was discovered internally during test firing and is related to firing pins that may not meet specifications. Henry Repeating Arms is ready to replace the firing pins free of charge in the order by which the firearms are received. Information on the current turnaround time for rifles returned under this recall will be provided at henryusa.com/recall. Henry Repeating Arms will make every effort to minimize the turnaround time. Additionally, as a sign of appreciation to its customers, Henry Repeating Arms will send any customer with a rifle affected by this recall a $50 gift card for HenryPride.com upon completion of service.

How To Practice For Hunting Western States

Tracy Breen

If you are a Midwest or Eastern bowhunter heading West this fall, one of the most important things you can do is make sure you can keep your arrows in a pie plate size group at forty yards and beyond. For most Whitetail bowhunters (including me), the average shot taken in the field is inside thirty yards.

As a result, we often practice at thirty yards. John Schaffer from Schaffer Performance Archery of Minnesota has hunted all over the West and believes if bowhunters are heading west, they need to practice at long ranges.

“When bowhunting out west, a forty-yard shot is often the norm. Fifty- yard shots and beyond are common place,” Schaffer said. Schaffer regularly shoots his bow at distances of sixty yards and beyond. “Any flaw in a person’s shooting form is going to be more exaggerated at longer ranges. By practicing at longer ranges, archers quickly learn what they need to fix to keep a small arrow group.”

When shooting at great distances, any flaw in your bow setup will also be magnified. At thirty yards, almost any arrow setup will fly well. At seventy-five yards, if your arrows don’t weigh the same, if one or two of your arrows has a flaw or if your broadhead planes, you will quickly notice your group isn’t very tight.

When I pull a dozen arrows out of a box and fletch them up, often I have a few that don’t perform at longer distances. These arrows get thrown into a box and aren’t used for hunting. To make sure my arrows fly well and to make sure they all weigh about the same, I weigh each arrow on a grain scale.

March 2023 News & Events

Hello everyone, and welcome to the second installment of the RV and camping news and events for March 2023. Here we’re following up with Starlink after pricing changes earlier this month and now that they’ve introduced new pricing and service for RVers and campers. Then we head to Austin, Texas where 2023 South by Southwest has been the launching pad for two new innovative RVs, including the premier of the first all-electric RV. Plus, we take a look at Yosemite National Park as a bellwether after recent storms in California have caused massive flooding and record snowfall.

Starlink Roam

Starlink RV has now been rebranded as Starlink Roam, and it will offer two different pricing and service plans. Subscribers can pay $150 each month for regional roaming services, or they can choose global roaming and pay $200 monthly to be able to receive internet service traveling to other continents. Both will require the base Starlink Kit, which runs $599, or the high-performance antenna at $2500. This change comes less than a month after a price change to the Starlink RV plan.

All-Electric RV Premiers at SXSW

Courtesy of Lightship

Lightship L1 made its debut at this month’s 2023 South by Southwest festival as the only all-electric RV of its kind, featuring a classic pop-up design and flattening to only six feet 9 inches when being towed for superior aerodynamics. The RV also comes equipped with an electrically powered powertrain, which assists the tow vehicle to optimize either gas mileage or EV range.

Once parked, the RV’s battery system is designed to offer about a week’s worth of off-grid power, which won’t go unnoticed by frequent boondockers. The L1 starts at $125,000 but can be available for $118.400 after a tax credit is applied.

National Deer Association’s Annual Deer Report

The National Deer Association’s annual Deer Report is out and it contains interesting information on bowhunting trends.

Per usual, the report relies primarily on data from two years prior, as that’s the most recent comprehensive info available from state agencies when NDA compiles their report. Still, it’s very enlightening.

Deer Harvest Trends

Nationwide, bowhunters took 25% of the total deer harvest in 2021. Regionally, the Northeast took top honors accounting for 33%, followed by the Midwest at 28%, the West at 25%, the Southeast at 16% and Canada at 11%. New Jersey led not only the Northeast but the nation with bowhunting accounting for 64% of the total harvest, followed by Connecticut at 51% and Massachusetts at 48%. Next highest were Ohio at 48% and Kansas close behind at 47%. Clearly, bowhunting continues to play a strong role in controlling deer populations more developed states.

Hunter Trends

It’s probably not surprising that Illinois leads the nation in terms of percentage of bowhunters, at 74%. The First State – Delaware – is second at 67%, followed by Connecticut (66%), Massachusetts (66%) and Ohio (61%). It’s worth noting that the Northeast also had the highest proportion of hunters participating in both archery and muzzleloading seasons, and the highest number of deer hunters per square mile (8).

Crossbows

Crossbow use continues to grow though the growth rate has slowed considerably as they gain more widespread acceptance. Crossbows are now legal in 46 states compared to 21 in 2012.

RV Lot Ownership: What You Need to Know

We’ve all seen the real estate signs along the highway that proclaim, “If you lived here, you’d be home by now.” Many parks make good on the promise of the ideally located home. When parks offer RV lots for sale, travelers can find the comfort and security of ownership in some of the most beautiful parts of North America.

It hasn’t always been this way. A few decades ago, only a handful of parks offered RV lots for sale. RV travelers who purchased this property in those early stages were thought by some to be crazy. Well, it turned out that these early purchasers were quite level-headed. The concept took off and the values climbed, rewarding many of the early buyers with nice profits when they sold their lots.

Pueblo El Mirage RV Resort, El Mirage, Arizona

Today, throughout North America, you can find RV lots for sale in several RV resorts. Similar to the housing market, RV lot real estate has a wide range in selling prices. You can find some sites in the $40,000 range and others that push the one-million-dollar mark. This price variation is driven by factors similar to the home sale market, with a special focus on location, location, location.

Lots come in all shapes and sizes. Some include amenities like carriage houses, multilevel decking, outdoor kitchens and even private swimming pools, all dramatically influencing price. Quite frankly, there are some jaw-dropping parks in North America that house some of the most palatial RV sites that one could imagine.

Boats moored on a placid harbor.
A pond reflecting a lush, tropical resort.
A Porsche parked next to a luxury motorhome.
Leisure seekers float on a river on inner tubes.
A red, wooden deck overlooks a placid pond.
A modernistic swimming pool shimmers at the feet of palm trees.

How To: A Luxury Vacation in an RV

Carmen and her family were able to spend some time having a luxury vacation in beautiful Hilton Head, South Carolina, their experience proved to them that they can get everything they want in a luxury trip while renting an RV. Watch the family’s adventure below.

 What defines a luxury vacation?

Let’s face it, free time is a luxury. That’s exactly why we should indulge when we can. A luxury vacation is an investment of time in ourselves and our loved ones, and it shows we value experiences spent together. More than physical things, those experiences extend beyond the trip, which is why you should strive to experience more on all your vacations.

Few people know this more than Carmen Sognonvi of Top Flight Family. These days, she and her jet-setting family frequently travel the globe in luxury style. Their Top Flight lifestyle began with that first fateful trip.

“We had some credit card points saved up and booked a vacation to Cabo,” Carmen said. After three straight years of growing their business without a day off, this was their first-ever trip as a family of four.

“It was such an amazing experience. Not only were we able to unplug from the business and unwind, but we reconnected with each other in a way that wasn’t possible when we were wrapped up in our hectic daily routines.”

Fitness on the Road

If you’re anything like me, you have a tricky relationship with fitness.

I tend to either set my goals way too high (like signing up for a half marathon in a month even though I’ve never ran more than a few miles) and then become discouraged when I can’t maintain them, or I don’t set any at all and therefore have no plan — becoming aimless.

However, in this past year I took tremendous strides in my health. And it was certaily no thanks to my travel schedule, considering I was away from home almost as much as I was there. But even with interrupted schedules, changing rhythms, or limited equipment at campgrounds and hotels, I feel healthier than ever.
