Federal Ammunition Will Showcase New Products at the 2023 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits

Federal Ammunition will unveil new products at the 2023 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, held at the Indiana Convention Center, on April 14-16, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Attendees are encouraged to visit booth 5355 to see all of Federal’s new products for 2023, which includes new 7mm PRC cartridges in 155-grain and 170-grain Terminal Ascent.

“The new 7mm PRC cartridge is built for long-range hunting, delivering magnum power from a standard-action rifle platform with streamlined, heavy-for-caliber bullets,” said Federal’s Centerfire Product Line Manager, Eric Miller. “Federal is maximizing the accuracy, range and terminal performance of the 7mm PRC with three new offerings.”

Features of these new cartridges include: all-new standard-action centerfire rifle cartridge; high ballistic coefficient (BC), heavy-for-caliber bullets; available in Terminal Ascent or ELD-X bullets; and loaded with Gold Medal primers, specially formulated propellant, and Premium brass.

“We looked at the 7mm PRC and it’s capabilities as a new cartridge and knew that paired with Terminal Ascent, we would have a fantastic load for the hunter and shooter,” continued Miller. “With the faster twist rates, the high BC and long ogive in Terminal Ascent is a great combination for the hunter and shooter. People will like the energy that the .284-inch caliber carries, and through our test shooting we are extremely pleased with the accuracy of these new loads.”

The 2023 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits will showcase over 14 acres of the latest guns and gear. Learn more at: www.nraam.org.

East Dakota Chapter Holds 30th Annual Banquet

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — On April 1, 2023, the East Dakota Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its 30th annual banquet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The banquet raised funds for wildlife conservation projects and preserving hunting heritage in the state.

At the banquet, 204 attendees enjoyed a meal and had the opportunity to participate in silent and live auctions and several raffles. These activities raised funds and awareness to support the NWTF’s conservation initiatives.

During the banquet, plaques were awarded to donors who have generously supported the chapter and banquet over the past 30 years. Additionally, five members of the East Dakota committee — Dean Schueler, Duane Albers, Jon Soderholm, Ron Schauer and Mark Anderson — were recognized and honored with plaques for their dedication to the chapter for 30 years.

During the banquet, South Dakota Rep. Jessica Bahmuller presented the NWTF East Dakota Chapter with the 50th Anniversary legislative commemoration, recognizing the NWTF’s pivotal role in wildlife management research, habitat conservation and preservation of outdoor traditions in the United States. Randy Gaskins, NWTF senior regional director, read the commemoration to those present at the event.

The NWTF East Dakota Chapter holds the distinction of being the longest-running chapter in South Dakota. In recognition of its exceptional contributions to conservation efforts, the NWTF awarded the East Dakota Chapter the prestigious Golden Gobbler status (50% net-to-gross profit), which only 18 chapters across the nation have achieved for over 25 years — 29 consecutive years for the East Dakota Chapter. Moreover, the chapter has raised over $1.5 million to support conservation initiatives since 1993.

TRIED AND TESTED: TROPHY GRAPH SYSTEMS RIGOROUS TESTING PROCESS FOR GRAPH MOUNTS

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR THE ULTIMATE FISHING EXPERIENCE WITH TROPHY GRAPH SYSTEMS

Rose Metal Products is a company that focuses on its customers and their needs, striving to produce the best graph mounts on the market and refusing to offer a product that hasn’t been rigorously tested and proven. Investing time and resources in product research and development guarantees that Trophy Graph Systems mounts from Rose Metal Products are the best electronics mounts available today.

All Trophy Graph Systems mounts undergo a comprehensive testing process which ensures that each mount will hold up under all conditions that anglers encounter on the water. Rose Metal Products expects its customers to be more than satisfied with the products they receive and ensures that Trophy Graph Systems mounts do the job they are supposed to do – and more.

Each Trophy Graph Systems mount is subjected to a harsh, demanding vibration test, delivering thousands of vibrations per second to the mounts and guaranteeing against the development of stress cracks. Chris Castillo from Rose Metal Products explains it to be the difference between strength of the material versus performance when subjected to extreme vibrational forces. This vibration test is designed to exceed even the worst windy, wavy conditions on a boat by delivering constant vibrational stress to the graph mount when it supports a significant weight – like today’s heaviest fishfinders. The Rose Metal Products vibrational test ensures that Trophy Graph Systems mounts – and the materials they are manufactured from – will deliver excellence and reliability under all conditions on the water.

Rose Metal Products also conducts a weight test that puts a substantial amount of weight on their mounts for up to several days to ensure the graph mount’s relative strength is maintained and that no stress cracks occur. These tests are used several times with a single product to guarantee a trouble-free ownership experience with Trophy Graph Systems mounts.

Rose Metal Products truly values each of its customers and focuses on their needs. As such, Rose Metal Products goes above and beyond to be certain that Trophy Graph Systems mounts perform as expected over many years of demanding service. And if the unexpected should occur, Rose Metal Products stands behind its products and will pull out all the stops to help each and every Trophy Graph Systems mount owner.

CZ Shadow 2 & Shadow 2 Orange – Now More Affordable Than Ever!

The CZ Shadow 2 and enhanced Shadow 2 Orange excel in practical shooting competitions and are now more affordable, starting at $1099. In matches like the Production Division of USPSA and IPSC, where competitors need both speed and accuracy to win, Shadow 2 pistols provide a competitive edge. Both pistols come from a lineage of high-performance DA/SA hammer-fired pistols, inheriting competition-winning features. The Orange model includes the match-grade features found on Shadow 2, plus several crucial upgrades—the Orange delivers custom pistol performance from a production gun with an MSRP of $1699.

Engineers purpose-built the Shadow 2 race gun with an impressive list of improvements over its predecessors. CZ started with one goal—creating the perfect sport shooting pistol. They lengthened the slide, increasing the pistol’s sight radius and making it easier to achieve accurate hits. Adding an extended dust cover on its frame increased the weight and shifted the balance slightly forward, dampening the recoil and reducing the muzzle jump. Also, the slide tapers as it approaches the muzzle, slicing weight away above the bore’s centerline, keeping the pistol flat as it cycles. The Shadow 2 utilizes the proven CZ 75 ergonomic grip angle shape providing natural aim while aggressive texturing secures the pistol in hand.

In contrast, the Shadow 2 Orange sports brightly-colored orange grips, mag bases, and mag release. CZ wanted to signal this model was unique. The beauty of the Shadow 2 Orange is more than skin deep—the pistol is more accurate too. CZ polished the barrel and fitted an externally installed, removable bushing. The new bushing assembly tightened the tolerances between the barrel and the slide, delivering smaller groups on paper.

Further accuracy enhancements to the Orange come from hand-fitting the slide at the factory. Slide rails start oversized and are slowly fit to the frame until it cycles like it’s sliding on glass. An improved trigger with a short reset comes standard on the Shadow 2 Orange. Less trigger travel shaves precious milli-seconds, which means follow-up shots are faster. The barrel and hammer are polished to help achieve a smoother shooting experience. It’s all about speed and the Shadow 2 Orange delivers.

The Shadow 2 and Shadow 2 Orange are superior competition pistols, loaded with high-performance features competitors need to win at new price points. Head to head, the Shadow 2 Orange has a clear performance advantage, but either is a solid choice for action pistol shooting sports.

Delta Waterfowl to Host 2023 World Cutdown Duck Calling Championship at Duck Hunters EXPO

An energy-filled contest sponsored by Mack’s Prairie Wings and Drake Waterfowl will crown a world champion cutdown caller on July 29

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA—The Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters EXPO will host the World Cutdown Duck Calling Championship at 12 p.m. on July 29 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Sponsored by Mack’s Prairie Wings and Drake Waterfowl, the event is produced by renowned champion callers Jim Ronquest and Heath Vanlandingham.

The cutdown call is a specially modified duck call long-favored by timber hunters in Arkansas and on the Lower Illinois River. Inspired by this history, Ronquest and Vanlandingham developed a contest that requires the use of these particular calls.

“On behalf of the World Cutdown Duck Calling Championship, LLC, we look forward to being a part of this year’s Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters Expo,” Ronquest said . “Last year’s event was a rousing success and this year’s will only be better.”

The classic Arkansas style duck call was introduced in 1904 by Philip Olt of Pekin, Illinois. In the 1950s and 1960s, duck hunters started individually modifying the call, which allowed them to customize the volume and pitch. These modified Olt calls—called “cutdowns”—were tremendously successful, and their popularity among hunters eventually led to commercial production by major duck call manufacturers.

Ranew’s Outdoor Equipment Offers a Full Line of Implements for all your Food Plot Needs

The Firminator G3 is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry, allowing the entire process of planting a food plot – plowing, planting, and packing the soil – from start to finish with one implement. However, for those who already own tillage equipment but still want all the other features and advantages of a Firminator, there’s a stand-alone Firmiseeder.

Like the G3 unit, the Firmiseeder features Firminator’s Accurate Seeding System, which can handle any seed size, from large corn, soybeans, peas, and sunflowers to the tiniest clovers without the need to change seed hoppers. The Accurate Seeding System’s easily adjustable metering openings ensure seeds are spread in the right amount.

Because the system is ground-driven, the seed is metered out relative to the travel speed, allowing the user to control the seeding rate. The optional seed hopper agitator keeps seeds thoroughly mixed, preventing smaller seeds from sifting through too quickly. So it evenly spreads seed blends with extreme size differences in a single pass. When the unit stops, an automatic shut-off prevents wasteful spills that occur with other hopper types.

Simply spreading seeds is not enough. Post-spread packing is also essential, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact for better germination rates and protection from wind deflection. The Firmiseeder also has the Firminator’s commercial-grade culti-packer. As the Firmiseeder moves forward, seeds are dropped into a specially designed baffle that thoroughly distributes them before the culti-packer, which rolls over the seeds and compacts soil.

Rigby engraver Karen Wallace winsThe Cartier Award for Excellence

Renowned London gunmaker, John Rigby & Co, is proud to announce that their talented engraver, Karen Wallace, has won the prestigious Jacques Cartier Award for Excellence, presented at the 2023 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship and Design Awards. Karen entered a Rigby bolt action rifle magazine floor plate that she had made, which was beautifully carved with scrollwork.

The Cartier Award for Excellence is a national award that recognises exceptional craftsmanship and artistry in jewellery making and other related fields. Independent jewellers and artisans from around the world are invited to submit their work for consideration. Out of all the gold medal winners, only one piece is selected as the winner of Cartier excellence. This award has been presented for 65 years, but it has only been awarded 43 times, as it is only given if there is a clear winner that meets the highest standards of excellence.

Karen Wallace’s winning entry is particularly noteworthy because it is the only time that someone has won with an item that is not made from gold nor silver. It is also the only gun engraving or anything related to gunmaking that has ever won the award. Karen’s beautiful scrollwork on the Rigby bolt action rifle magazine floor plate impressed the judges with its exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Rigby has a long and distinguished history as one of the world’s leading gunmakers. Founded in 1775, the company has been at the forefront of gunmaking technology for over two centuries. Today, they continue to produce some of the finest sporting rifles and shotguns available, using the latest manufacturing techniques and the highest quality materials.

Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We are proud to have Karen Wallace as part of their team of skilled artisans. Her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft are a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence. The Cartier Award for Excellence is a well-deserved recognition of Karen’s exceptional talent and the outstanding quality of her work. The team congratulates her on the achievement and look forward to continuing to produce the finest sporting rifles and shotguns for discerning customers around the world.”

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Spring Fruit

The nutritional needs of wildlife vary throughout the year, and to better meet those changes, it’s essential to plant a variety of hard and soft mast-producing trees and shrubs. Hard mast addresses the late season, but spring and early summer are also critical nutritional periods that are best addressed by planting soft mast. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers an array of soft mast producers ideal for filling nutrition calendar gaps.

Mulberries

Mulberries are among the first shrubs to bear fruit in spring, as early as April and May in the deep south, and early June further north – peak periods for young and growing wildlife. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several varieties. Everbearing mulberry (Morus rubra), which includes black, white, and native red varieties, grows in a bush-like form, providing abundant fruit and cover – another important component of wildlife habitat. Black mulberry (Morus nigra) grows in a taller tree form and produces what many consider the highest quality mulberry fruits.

All trees are shipped bare-root.

Size shipped: 12 – 24 inches

Tim Wells Yucatan Oscillated Turkey: CONTACT!

BACK TO PART #1

The “serpant” slithered across the leaves toward me. A few of the snakes in the Yucatan are lethal so I never moved.  The forest was nearly as hot as I was so I stood still as the snake slithered past my boot.  Not sensing my motionless body he gave me a pass.  Matia slightly laughed at me then refocused on the singing tom only a hundred yards ahead.

Light was building and as with most hunts for Oscillated turkeys we searched out a slight clearing in the jungle where we could call him into our trap.  The little clear area wouldn’t be considered back home but it was all we could hope for here in the jungle.

I took cover against a large Yaaxche tree while Matia slid off into the grey light behind me.  We then waited.  The rhythmic calls of the Oscillated tom picked up pace as the sun illuminated the jungle.  At last, I heard him fly down and land on the jungle floor.  Immediately, Matia made his first call behind me.

His call sounded more like a chicken than a turkey, but the Oscillated tom answered Matia and began ‘pounding’ our way. Slowly the tom eased closer and began answering every call we offered.  My pulse quickened as I heard the Oscillated turkey’s footsteps.  He was coming my way but still behind a wall of foliage.

How to Stop a Wild Turkey

HOLD STILL!!!  If you have ever tried to hunt turkeys with an arrow, you know how precisely you must aim.  The kill zone on a big gobbler is the size of your fist and half of your target is covered with feathers.  Hitting a small target is difficult, but hitting a moving target is nearly impossible.  How can you get these crazy birds to stand still?

Hunt From a Blind

The best way to get a patient shot on a gobbler is to hunt from an enclosed blind.  The blind won’t stop the turkey but you can use a rest for a crossbow and draw and let down repeatedly without being seen.  Additionally, you can see or hear the gobbler coming so that you can be ready well in advance.  You can’t open and close windows without being seen so anticipate where birds will approach and have your shooting windows ready.

Concealing a blind is helpful but not necessary.

Use a Jake Decoy

If you want the best chance of attracting turkeys, use a Jake decoy.  Be sure to deploy it where a hunter cannot shoot the decoy and hit you.  Good news: Wild Turkeys will attack your decoy.  Bad news: They will constantly be moving.  Eventually, they will beat on the turkey decoy and get tired or give up.  You need to concentrate on the gobbler you want and where you will aim.  When it stops, shoot.

Jakes are yearling male turkeys with a short beard.

Use a Hen Decoy

Gobblers will approach a hen decoy very differently than a Jake.  They may strut up to the hen and stand motionless, exactly what you want to happen.  However, some gobblers, especially longbeards may have been shot at over a decoy and they may run at first sight.  Also, hens often don’t like a stranger in their territory and will alarm putt, taking a trailing tom with the flock.

Shown are a feeding and an alert hen.

Cluck with a Diaphragm Call

When a turkey hears an alarm call, a putt, it usually raises its head and looks for danger.  Shotgun hunters use this technique once they have called a turkey into range so that the bird will raise its head and the shot pattern won’t ruin the meat.

Tim Wells: Bowhunting Yucatan Oscillated Turkey

I have no doubt the early Mayans had called Oscillated turkeys in close then shot them with long bows or blowguns.  Being a primitive hunter,  I consider myself fortunate to have such an encounter myself.  My recent trip to the Yucatan Peninsula was by far the most rewarding turkey hunt I have yet to experience.

The Mayans were known as some of the greatest hunters to trek Mexico’s vast jungles and the Oscillated turkey played a roll in their long history of surviving in this harsh wilderness.  The Mayans are gone now and all that remains are the ruins of their great society that once ruled the Yucatan.

I’ve always considered hunting near the Mayan ruins but avoided the trip up until now.  Primarily because the Oscillated turkeys were killed by shooting them off the roost or over bait.  I have nothing against these methods but if I were to travel the distance and endure the heat I’d rather do something a bit more challenging.

By luck, I recently learned that these beautiful turkeys could be called within range.  Sergio Scarth with Balam Outfitters discovered the sounds that work well and luckily for me he invited me to try and be the first to actually call one in and arrow it on film.  So I booked a seven day hunt.

Fast forward to early April, I was now deep in a hot humid jungle.
