Typical Velvet Mule Deer Topping the Charts as New World Record

On Saturday, May 14th, Pope and Young convened a Special Panel of Judges in Ogden, UT for a potential World’s Record Typical Velvet Mule Deer. Bowdy Gardner’s Typical Velvet Mule Deer scored an incredible 218 2/8” and is now the largest bow-harvested Typical Velvet Mule Deer in North America. This amazing deer was taken and entered into the records program nearly ten years ago and is now recognized as the new world’s record after the original score was upheld by a panel of measurers.

Measurers present at the Special Panel were Larry Streiff, David Nielsen, Stan Zirbel, Pope and Young’s Director of Records, Tim Rozewski, and Pope and Young’s Records Chairman, Roy Grace. With a confirmed final score of 218 2/8” Gardner’s buck is officially the new Pope and Young World Record.

“This is a tremendous mule deer that has been awaiting this moment since it was taken in Kane County, Utah in 2012. When Pope and Young changed their stance in 2021 and allowed velvet antlered animals to be eligible for world record status within their own respective categories, we were finally able to authenticate this buck,” stated Roy Grace, Pope and Young Club’s Records Chairman. “It also demonstrates how sportsmen’s dollars, coupled with oversight from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, can properly manage these incredible animals and provide opportunity for sportsmen to pursue them.”

This World Record Typical Velvet Mule Deer was originally entered into the 28th recording period which represented entries accepted into Pope and Young’s Records Program from January 1st, 2011, to December 31st, 2012. As previously stated, Pope and Young changed their policy in 2021, allowing velvet antlered species to be eligible for World’s Record status within their own velvet categories. As such, nearly ten (10) years later, this incredible buck is now crowned as the new velvet World’s Record. At the close of every biennial recording period, numerical awards and honorable mentions are awarded to the most outstanding bow-harvested animals in each species category that have been entered during this two-year recording period. New World’s Records are verified and proclaimed, and awards are presented to these outstanding animals during Pope and Young’s Biennial Convention and Awards Banquet.

Bow Spider a Proud Sponsor of the Everest Course at Hoyt Archery’s Northwest Mountain Challenge

Bow Spider — the quickest and easiest hands-free bow retrieval system on the market – is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Everest Course at the Hoyt Archery Northwest Mountain Challenge, one of the most difficult target archery competitions in the world.

There are four dates and locations for the 2022 competition – Tamarack, ID, June 3-5; Hoodoo, OR, June 17-19; Helena, MT., July 8-10; and Steven’s Pass, WA., July 22-24. Open to archers and bowhunters of all ages, there are six different courses that can be attempted, including the Dead-On Kids Course, a fun 10-target kids course for all age ranges, and the Novelty/Pop-Up 3D Shoot, where participants can come shoot a variety of pay-to-play novelty shots and a pop-up course for prizes, cash and bragging rights.

The most challenging and difficult of the competition courses is the Everest Bow Spider Course. Approximately 3-5 miles in length, this physically-demanding 15 target course will test both a person’s archery skills and their stamina. Targets will be from 10-100 yards, rangefinders are allowed, and the IBO Scoring system (11, 10, 8, 5, 0) will be utilized. Competition will be shot on Saturday.

On Sunday, competitors can shoot the approximately two-mile long and very demanding Hoyt Archery Course, which features 20 targets with shots from 20-60 yards. Rangefinders are allowed, and the OPA scoring system (14, 12, 10, 8, 5, 0) employed. Participants can also shoot the Camofire.com course, approximately 2 ½-miles in length, which features 25 targets with unique shots from 20-90-plus yards, and the Phelps course, approximately 2 miles in length, featuring 20 targets with shots from 20-60 yards, with rangefinders allowed and the IBO scoring system (11, 10, 8, 5, 0) utilized.

“Few events will test a bowhunter’s skills more than the Northwest Mountain Challenge,” said Bow Spider founder David Merrill, himself an accomplished Western bowhunter. “This is a great event for the entire family, where you’ll meet other very serious archers and bowhunters, and have a great time. We’re proud to be sponsoring the Everest course, guaranteed to push all participants to their limits.”

American Provenance

American Provenance is a personal products company that makes clean, natural personal care products for men and women. These products are all-natural deodorants, body wash, and beard balm. American Provenance products are not made with harsh chemicals and they are aluminum free deodorants. We received a small box full of these to test out and have been using them daily for the last several weeks. The scent is light on these and not over powering which is important and they all seem to work as they should.

These products are all natural so that means no aluminum (who knew they put that in some deodorants), harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances and preservatives. It’s basically all-natural oils, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, arrowroot powder and natural magnesium hydroxide. Some of the products have baking soda in them.

The majority of the products are geared towards men with the beard balm and the body wash. I liked the scented products, though I am not going to use them while hunting. I could tell that the product was there when I put it on and it faded quickly, which is fine. Most importantly, at the end of the day I didn’t smell like a gym locker room even on days of heavy stress or physical activity. The beard balm smelled the best because the oil was heavier in the product and the scent lasted a little longer. The body wash was provided a nice clean smell when in use in the shower.  It lathered okay but not as well as some body washes, but it was nice knowing that chemicals are not all over my body.

We tested the deodorants, beard oil, aftershave, and body wash. The aftershave and body wash were our favorites, and the deodorant worked well. Scent combinations are wintergreen & cedar, eucalyptus & mint, sandalwood & bergomot, lemongrass & marjoram, bourbon & vetiver, bay rum & lime, oud wood & spruce, ylang ylang & clove, patchouli (YUCK) & lavender. We liked the oud wood & spruce as well as the lemongrass & marjoram the best. If you are looking for natural products and would like to skip smelling like everyone else, these are some products worth looking into. They are clean and they work. They even have an unscented version that would work for hunting. Check them out at AmericanProvenance.com.

O-Pen by Roving Blue

The Roving Blue O-Pen is a tool to ensure that your water is safe to drink. The O-Pen allows you to treat your water with a cloud of ozone gas which is used by water treatment plants and water bottlers worldwide. Ozone happens to be one the strongest oxidizers available, and it leaves behind no toxicity or harsh tasting chemicals that could be a problem for your body.

The O-Pen uses electrolytic ozone which is far more powerful than chlorine and proven to be highly effective against multiple forms of bacteria, viruses, cysts and dangerous organisms. This is important because when you are traveling around the world, not all water is safe to drink. If you have not built up a local immunity to specific organisms your body can react in extremely harsh ways. I learned this first hand on a trip into South America, and I have not made the same mistake twice.

Ozone is a serious player in killing micro-organisms and parasites. These organisms cannot develop a resistance to the O-pen. The O-Pen contains a lithium battery built in, and it is safe and legal for all airlines in your carry on luggage. The unit is rechargeable and should be used on all water whether that is in your room, in camp, beside a stream and honestly even in water bottles if you doubt its source. There is no need to trust anyone; why not be protected and keep your body safe?

Using the Roving Blue O-Pen

The unit is extremely easy to use. Pull off the bottom cap, stick the actuator into the bottom of your glass, and press the button. It takes about a minute and you can clearly see the ozone rise out of the water with bubbles. Once it is done it shuts off and your water is safe to drink. The unit will work for about 50 uses per charge and it is easy to just plug in and charge.

I use it for all water when traveling, even for brushing my teeth. I treat the water that is going into my mouth first so that no harmful organisms come into contact with my mouth in any way.

Crosskix 2.0 APX Review

If you liked Crocs back in the day, you will love CrossKix 2.0 especially now that they have a version in Mossy Oak Camo. Crosskix gave us a pair to test out over the winter and into spring, and they have worked out pretty well. They are super casual, and I typically wear them around the house and yard, but they work great and are comfortable.

When you do wear the Crosskix 2.0 out and about, you may garner a little attention. People will walk up to you and ask you about them. The foam material is pretty soft and they build up a bit of a molded footbed that fits your feet after some use. I like this molding because it feels good on my arches, or lack thereof. As well, I will not go anywhere – even around my house – without shoes, and the Crosskix work well for this.

Even though I generally wear mine inside, the Crosskix design is really built for outdoor use. They are great as the ultimate water and camp shoe. They are light and easy to throw into luggage because of the light weight. We picked up a set of these for a nephew, and he really likes the Crosskix for excercize because he feels like he gets a better grip on the floor with his feet for pushups and planks, etc.

CrossKix APX Specs:

Meopta MeoStar S2 82 HD Spotting Scope Named ‘Best Value’ by Outdoor Life

Meopta Sport Optics is pleased to announce the MeoStar S2 82 HD spotting scope has been named ‘Best Value’ by Outdoor Life in its April 2022 spotting scope test. Outdoor Life’s Andrew McKean tested a variety of spotting scopes from premium glass to budget options to help guide readers on important aspects to consider before buying a spotting scope.  He notes that spotting scopes are “indispensable for many purposes like assessing distant animals during a hunt, determining whether you hit or missed a steel target at a mile, and whether the bird you’re glassing is a rare specimen or a common species.”

The MeoStar S2 82 HD tested was the straight-body model.  It also comes in an angled body. Eyepieces are interchangeable and available in 20-70x or 30-60x WA (wide angle). The S2 82 features extra-low-dispersion fluoride glass that eliminates chromatic aberration and delivers sharp resolution, outstanding contrast and color fidelity.

The following excerpts are from Outdoor Life’s ‘The Best Spotting Scopes of 2022’ article.

“A product-line extension following Meopta’s successful angled MeoStar S2, this 82mm spotter has the optical horsepower for just about any hunting situation, and the straight-barrel design makes it easy to slide into a backpack sleeve.

The straight-barrel design will appeal to viewers who want to make quick target acquisition, instead of the hunting-and-pecking sometimes required with angled eyepieces. In all, the Meopta compares favorably to premium spotters from Swarovski, Leica, and Zeiss at a lower price.”

Can Sporting Breed Puppies Eat Adult Dog Food?

Sponsored Content from Eukanuba™

Sporting breed puppies are bred and trained to work. As a result, they have very different nutritional needs from those of a future house dog. Puppy formulas are typically more nutrient dense when compared to most adult formulas, to meet the demands of growth. However, it is not uncommon for sporting dog owners to utilize a performance formula or an “all-life-stages” product for their sporting breed puppies. These formulas are usually more nutrient dense and, in theory, sufficient to support the growth period. However, there are other nutritional options available today specifically designed for active puppies that may offer advantages that help promote a solid nutritional foundation for future performance.

For active puppies that will develop into working and sporting dogs, selecting a performance puppy food designed with an optimal nutrient profile can help fuel their active lifestyle and help sustain healthy growth and development.

What’s the Difference Between Puppy and Adult Dog Food?

Russ Kelley, Eukanuba’s Scientific Services Nutritionist says, “Owners who compare nutrients in adult and puppy food may see a lot of similarities. That can lead them to believe that the two aren’t that different. However, there are significant differences in the amounts of specific nutrients, and sometimes adjustments in ratios of certain nutrients. For active puppies that will develop into working and sporting dogs, selecting a puppy food designed with an optimal nutrient profile can help fuel their active lifestyle and help sustain healthy growth and development.”

Sporting breed puppies tend to have increased environmental exposure as they are introduced to fields, woods, and bodies of water. A puppy diet with a tailored antioxidant complex can help provide an extra layer of immune support.

How Does Puppy Nutrition Support Growth and Activity?

“Compared to pet puppies, it is anticipated that highly active sporting breed puppies will have greater demands placed on their developing bones and joints, due to early outings and introductory training sessions,” says Kelley. “It’s important that their diets have a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio to support healthy bone growth rates. Puppy diets containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate help support healthy cartilage as well. The addition of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid, can also be beneficial to joints by supporting cartilage.”

How Does Puppy Nutrition Contribute to Healthy Brain Function and Learning?

Sporting breed puppies have a lot to learn. Puppy diets that include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) help support healthy brain function and learning. “A puppy’s brain and nervous system experience rapid growth during the formative two- to eight-month period. DHA helps supports that development,” says Kelley. “DHA is initially supplied by the dam during gestation and lactation. Post weaning, it is important for the puppy to continue to obtain optimal levels of DHA in their diet.”

A puppy’s brain and nervous system experience rapid growth during the formative two- to eight-month period. It is important for a puppy to obtain optimal levels of DHA in their diet to help support that development.

How Does Puppy Nutrition Support Digestive Health?

“The amounts and types of nutrients provided in a puppy’s diet are very important for his developing digestive system,” says Kelley. “In particular, fiber plays an important role in supporting and promoting gastrointestinal health. For our Premium Performance Puppy Pro formula, we developed a unique fiber complex including FOS, mannanoligosaccharide (MOS), dried plain beet pulp, and psyllium. Beet pulp and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) are excellent prebiotics that help promote digestive health and serve as nutrient sources for the beneficial bacteria in the gut. Psyllium is important in a puppy diet because it helps form a proper stool.”
