Proper Digestion is Important for Gun Dogs

By Eukanuba Staff

Strenuous exercise can challenge the digestive systems of hardworking sporting dogs. Their bodies endure mechanical stress from the vibrations caused by exercise, as well as physical stress associated with increased levels of cortisol. As a result, dogs can experience GI upset.

Fortunately, feeding your dog a diet that includes certain key nutrients can have a positive impact on their GI health. According to Russ Kelley at the Eukanuba™ Pet Health & Nutrition Center, “Nutrition that supports the GI system includes insoluble fibers, psyllium, prebiotics, and beet pulp. These ingredients help ensure that nutrients are absorbed by the dog’s body and can be used to help replace cells lost during activity.”

Fermentable fiber in the form of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and beet pulp plays a prebiotic role by stimulating the production of short-chain fatty acids which nourish the intestinal cells. And FOS also provide a prebiotic effect by stimulating beneficial bacteria. The addition of psyllium aids in the passage of stool.

Some diets contain solid ingredients that are precision-ground to make digestion easier. Finely-ground carbohydrates from corn meal, barley, and grain sorghum (a cereal) can be more efficiently absorbed by the digestive system. Foods that are easily digested help dogs optimize nutrient absorption.

Kibble size is another aspect that plays a larger role in digestion than most owners and handlers realize. Kibble that is small and perfectly round is easy for dogs to swallow without chewing. Without being chewed, the kibble isn’t ground by the teeth. Small kibble that is swallowed without being chewed allows many nutrients to pass through the small intestine without being absorbed. So, slightly larger kibble size formed in irregular shapes encourages chewing and aids digestion. That chewing also helps reduce tartar and plaque build-up on the teeth.

Conservation Boosted on Imperiled Habitat

The NWTF recently secured $358,000 in funding, thanks to a generous grant provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources via the agency’s Wildlife Habitat Grant Program.

The newly acquired funding allows the NWTF and partners in Michigan to restore and enhance imperiled oak ecosystems and other high-priority habitats, delivering conservation work on over 1,050 acres and totaling more than $550,000 in project costs over two years.

Once one of the most abundant ecosystems in the Midwest, oak savannas have dwindled drastically since European settlement and are now one of the rarest plant communities on the planet.

It is estimated that less than one percent of the oak savanna habitat that existed before European settlement exists on the landscape today.

But what does this have to do with wild turkeys?

Gear Up for Early Summer Tarpon

Prepare for Battle with the Silver King

Angling enthusiasts in the Southeast begin planning their vacation days as the cool weather and winds of spring transition to stable summertime conditions. Captain Ed Zyak, a light tackle and fly fishing specialist and a veteran inshore tournament angler, has logged two decades of guiding experience along Florida’s east coast chasing trophy-caliber snook, speckled trout, permit, redfish, and more. Zyak loves this time of year because, for him and his guests, it’s tarpon time.

“When it’s windy In the spring, we spend a lot of time hunting snook,” notes Zyak. “We also get into some enormous jacks – I mean absolutely huge fish in that 40 to 50-inch class – as well as some bonus kingfish. I do a lot of live bait fishing at this time of year, but I also enjoy throwing Current Sniper Splash Walk  topwaters. It’s very exciting to watch fish chase those lures down and blow up on them! When the wind backs off, fishing will start to get really good, and we’ll transition to chasing tarpon.”

Photo Provided by Shimano North America Fishing

“Unless they’re fly fishing, every client on my boat will be chasing tarpon with a Shimano Teramar XX SE rod. I’ve had a chance to handle a lot of nice rods over my career, but when I was first handed a Teramar XX SE, I thought to myself, ‘this is a REALLY nice rod!’ It’s light, casts beautifully, and has instant power on the hookset. So I did some homework to see what these rods were all about — what technologies made them feel and fish so well?

Shimano’s exclusive Spiral X and Hi-Power X technologies make Teramar XX SE tougher and lighter while enhancing their overall performance. Spiral X construction consists of three layers: a blank made of vertical fibers and two layers of carbon tape that tightly wind the blank diagonally in opposite directions. By using carbon tape rather than a conventional horizontal fiber sheet, Spiral X technology enhances torsional rigidity without increasing weight. In Hi-Power X construction, Shimano rod engineers wrap the blank’s outermost layer with carbon tape to form an array of “X” shapes, with the tape’s width and winding angle customized according to the target fish species. This construction flexibility allows Shimano to adjust the carbon wraps for precise actions, enhanced overall strength and added twist resistance. In short, Spiral X and Hi-Power X construction deliver sharp and crisp rod control and enhance every angler’s catching power.

The Importance of Carbohydrates in a Sporting Dog’s Diet

By Eukanuba Sporting Dog

Sporting dog handlers and trainers know that to perform at their best their strings require a lot of energy. Those dogs derive energy from three nutrient classes: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. A lot of attention in recent years has been devoted to protein and fat, so much so that carbohydrates have taken a backseat. Let’s take a moment and explore what makes carbohydrates so interesting.

Carbohydrates are molecules that contain hydrogen, oxygen and carbon in specific amounts. Those three elements can be used by a dog’s body with the nutrients to support all bodily functions, including energy. Grains like wheat, sorghum, rice and corn all contain carbohydrates (saccharides) in the form of starch, sugar, and fiber. When ingested, carbohydrates can be digested into glucose and used for energy. If the meal results in more glucose than the dog needs immediately, the excess glucose is converted to glycogen or fat and stored as an energy reserve. The glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles which can be rapidly mobilized to provide energy during work.

Carbs power gun dogs for short bursts of intense activity

The important point for sporting dog handlers is that they should want to feed what I call the ‘whole dog.’ What that means is that it’s important to account for all bodily functions and not just the task-specific ones. Let’s take the break away as an example. When a handler releases a dog to run, the dog is utilizing carbohydrates as the main energy source. The longer the dog works, the more dependent they become on lipids for energy, but it is never a complete transition. Keep in mind that glucose is the primary fuel for the nervous system, as neurons do not use fat for energy. Thus, while muscle contraction can transition over to utilizing fat for energy, the nerves that drive the contraction and the brain still need a continuous source of energy. Remember, we are trying to feed the whole dog. While there may be many reasons why dogs lose focus, one contributing factor could be that it’s not eating enough carbohydrates or the correct blend.

Another positive reason for including carbohydrates in your dog’s diet is that they help promote a healthy digestive system. They contain not only starches and sugars that can be used for energy, but fiber as well. Just like humans, dietary fiber is important for digestive health in the dog. Fiber is not digested by the dog directly but can be used by the microbiota (bacteria) that reside in their GI tracts. These bacteria use the fiber to produce nutrients that are used by the cells that line the dog’s intestinal tract which contributes to a true symbiotic relationship.

Contrary to many advertisements, neither carbohydrates nor the grains that provide them are bad. In fact, carbohydrates are an important part of your dog’s energy platform regardless if your dog is a pointer, setter, shorthair, or Lab. There is always the temptation to classify the importance of one nutrient class over another, but in truth, for optimal performance a dog’s diet must contain optimal levels of all nutrients to support the whole body, not just a single system.

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Soft Mast Overview

The key components of wildlife habitat are food, cover and water. Planting soft mast trees and shrubs from Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers a great way to improve the quantity and quality of the first two and in so doing, attract and hold more and healthier wildlife on the land.

By planting soft mast producers, a landowner can widen the window of time when their land provides for the creatures that live upon it, filling gaps in the nutritional calendar not covered adequately by hard mast or food plots. Furthermore, several soft mast species offer important cover so wildlife won’t have to travel far for safety between feedings.

Mulberries and Plums

These two varieties start off the mast calendar in late spring and early summer, a period of rapid growth for both plants and wildlife. Black, white and native red varieties of Everbearing Mulberry (Morus rubra) and Black Mulberry (Morus nigra) from Chestnut Hill Outdoors are the very first soft mast shrubs to bear fruit in the spring. They begin to bear fruit as early as April and May in the deep south and early June farther north. This is a critical time; it’s when growing fawns are putting added nutritional stress on their mothers, antler growth rates in bucks are skyrocketing and young game birds are foraging voraciously. Barely have the berries been gleaned when American (Prunus americana) and Chickasaw plums (Prunus angustifolia) start dropping ripe fruit in June and July. In addition to abundant fruit, these species also grow into brushy thickets that provide nesting, brooding, bedding and security cover.

Brambles and Grapes

A silver oval is also inlayed into the stock to add the client’s initials or crest.

MSU-led effort spawns creation of new migratory freshwater fish database

Scientists cataloged the migratory life histories of 1,250 North American migratory fish species to help natural resources managers make more-informed conservation decisions

EAST LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan State University-led team of scientists has assembled the North American Freshwater Migratory Fish Database, which brings together life history information on 1,250 species to inform conservation practices.

A paper chronicling the effort was published in the Journal of Biogeography.

The development of the database was led by Emily Dean, a doctoral student in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife who works in the lab of professor Dana Infante.

“Freshwater fish migrations support natural and human communities across the globe,” Dean said. “However, migratory populations are declining in response to barriers such as dams, culverts and road crossings, which reduce access to critical habitat in streams.”
