Summer Night Calling for Hogs has Never Been Easier

For hunters, summer can be a time to sort through deer and turkey hunting gear or daydream about past hunts and those to come. But it can also be a great time to hit the woods searching for wild hogs, especially in cooler evenings when porkers are often more active during those warmer months. Convergent® offers two significant assets to help summer hunters: the Sidewinder Weapon-Mounted Game Call and the Wild Hog Pro app.

The Sidewinder Weapon Mounted Game Call mounts directly to a hunter’s firearm. The call can also secure a smartphone on its back with the integrated phone mount, leaving the hunter with both hands free to call in and take out the hogs. The compact and lightweight 9.6-ounce Sidewinder electronic call is controlled by the smartphone and produces premium sound quality directed away from the hunter and towards the game at 100+dB. Sidewinder easily mounts to a Picatinny rail and connects to a smartphone via USB-C cable.

Worried about recoil? Don’t be; Sidewinder has been tested and approved for calibers up to 6.8 SPC. The compact 3” x 3” x 4” design is sure to stay connected to your firearm in all situations, and the lithium-ion battery offers 5+ hours of run time on a single charge. You may run out of steam before the Sidewinder does.

There’s no more deadly combination for hunting wild hogs than the Sidewinder and Convergent’s Wild Hog Pro app for iOS or Android. This app contains a wide variety of fifteen natural wild hog sounds recorded in High Definition and digitally mastered to entice even the wariest and call-shy porkers. Programmable preset buttons allow you to play your favorite calls quickly, and more sounds can be gained via the in-app purchase of a package by professional hog caller Glenn Guess.

With both call and phone handily contained on your shooting iron, you can better concentrate on the imminent approach of wild hogs as you sit coolly in the star-lit night awaiting your freezer fodder. We can’t imagine a better way for a hunter to spend a summer’s eve.

Keep Deer Coming Back With Big And J Apple BB2

The white-tailed deer is an animal that browses and grazes when looking for food. Deer feed on everything from grasses, wild fruits, farmer’s crops and have even been known to feed on the bark of trees when there is nothing else to eat. On a typical day, deer often take a few bites here and a few bites there, then move on to the next spot to find nutritious food, making it rare to see deer in the same location day after day.

Three of the main goals when hunters use a supplemental feeding program are to get pictures of deer on their game cameras, provide deer with a boost of nutrition to grow bigger bucks and produce a healthier herd. Hunters game cameras will explode with action when using Apple BB2 from Big & J while providing far better nutrition than any naturally occurring food source.

For deer hunters to gain the most data from their cameras, they cannot rely on one or two pictures of a buck. Instead, they need Apple BB2 that creates an irresistible taste, keeping deer coming back. Using the powerful aroma of Apple BB2, bucks will be drawn from farther distances, giving the hunter a better inventory of what is in the area. The irresistible taste of the Apple BB2 keeps bucks in front of the camera longer and more often, providing the hunter with extra pictures to observe when creating a game plan for the upcoming fall.

The powerful aroma of Apple BB2 brings deer back time and time again while packing in superb nutrition. Apple BB2 has the perfect amount of starch, digestible fiber, and a higher protein level. It is scientifically formulated with TDN (total digestive nutrition) that exceeds corn and most premium feeds.

There is no question Apple BB2 attracts deer because it gives them what they want, including the smell of one of a deer’s favorite foods, apples. When deer are happy and stress-free, it can be the missing puzzle piece for success. The benefits from the TDN (total digestive nutrition) and a high protein level leave bucks full of needed energy that will lead them through the fall and the rut, which is where they need it most.

North Dakota Waterfowl Survey Shows Wet Conditions, Increased Number of Breeding Ducks

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — What a difference a year can make. In 2021, North Dakota was abnormally dry. The annual May wetland index conducted by the North Dakota Fish and Game Department registered the fifth-driest year in the past 75 years. This year, the North Dakota spring water index shows conditions are the second-wettest in the history of the survey — up 616 percent from 2021.

Major snow events and prolonged soaking rains in this winter and spring — April had the second-most precipitation recorded in the past 128 years — have recharged parched wetlands throughout the state. The abundance of water across North Dakota is excellent news for breeding ducks, and in turn, for duck hunters.

“The really wet conditions will help in inciting nesting and continuing that effort throughout spring,” said Mike Szymanski, migratory game bird supervisor for the NDFGD. “Ponds that are important for brood-rearing habitat have rebounded nicely. Things are looking pretty good for duck production prospects.”

The survey showed 3.4 million total ducks, a 16 percent increase from 2021. Duck numbers for North Dakota are 38 percent above the long-term average. Mallards increased 58 percent, while pintails were up 108 percent and shovelers registered 126 percent higher than last year. Most species showed increases, although blue-winged teal were down 4 percent, wigeon were 10 percent lower and gadwalls declined by 36 percent.

“Waterfowl managers from North Dakota Fish and Game, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service have all observed that a lot of wetlands are devoid of ducks this spring,” said Dr. Chris Nicolai, waterfowl scientist for Delta Waterfowl. “That suggests that we have more water available this spring than ducks to fill them, which is not surprising given the poor production in the Prairie Pothole Region last year.”

6 Things You Need To Pack For Your Next Hunting Trip

For many people, hunting is a thrilling way to connect with nature and get some exercise. If you’re new to hunting, though, it can be difficult to know what supplies you need to bring along on your trip. And while some items may be optional, there are. some essential items you need to make sure to pack. You may not think of everything, but if you forget any of the key items, your trip will be much more difficult and less successful. So, to help you ensure your next hunting trip is nothing less than  perfect, here are six essential things you need to pack:

A Good Knife

A good knife is one of the most important things you can pack for your next hunting trip. Not only does a knife come in handy for a million different tasks, but it can also be a lifesaver if something goes wrong. In short, you really can’t go on a hunting trip without a good knife. What makes a good hunting knife? There are many factors to consider, but perhaps the most important is the blade. You’ll want a knife with a sharp, durable blade that can handle whatever you throw at it. The handle is also important – you’ll want something comfortable to grip that won’t slip out of your hand in the middle of a task. And finally, consider the size of the knife. A larger knife will be more versatile, but a smaller knife will be easier to carry.

The Right Rifle

If you’re going on a hunting trip, you’ll need a riffle. But not just any rifle will do – you need one that’s well-suited for the type of hunting you’ll be doing. Different animals require different types of riffles, so it’s important to do your research before making a purchase. For instance, if you are preparing for a deer hunting trip, you’ll need a rifle that can take down a large game, like a 30-06 or a 300 Winchester Magnum. But if you’re going varmint hunting, you’ll need a smaller caliber air rifle for small game, which can shoot accurately at long range. You’ll also want to consider the weight and size of the riffle, as well as the caliber. And don’t forget about accessories! You may need a scope or other attachments to make your riffle more effective.

Ammunition

Of course, you can’t use your rifle without ammunition. And depending on the type of hunting you’re doing, you may need a lot of it. So, make sure to pack plenty of ammo – more than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have too much than not enough. You should also consider bringing along a few different types of ammo, in case you need to change tactics during your hunt. For instance, if you’re deer hunting, you may want to bring both hollow points and solid bullets. Hollow points are designed to expand when they hit their target, making them ideal for taking down large games. But they can also be expensive. Solid bullets are cheaper and will penetrate thick hide and bone, but they don’t expand as much, so they’re not as effective for taking down large animals.

New Hunting and Angling Opportunities Proposed for National Wildlife Refuges

USFWS requests public input on expanded opportunities on 19 refuges, affecting 54,000 acres

MISSOULA, Mont. – A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal would expand hunting and fishing opportunities on 19 national wildlife refuges across the United States, potentially impacting 54,000 acres of public lands and waters.

If adopted, the proposal would permit public hunting on 436 national wildlife refuge units and fishing on 378 units. As 101 million citizens – 40% of the American population – engage in outdoor wildlife-related recreation, opening more refuges to hunters, anglers and others is an important step toward ensuring that U.S. public lands remain equal-opportunity places where access to the outdoors is available to all.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers applauded the potential expansion of hunting and fishing access by the USFWS. At the same time, BHA criticized language in the proposal that would prohibit sportsmen and women from using lead ammunition, shells and tackle in the newly opened areas.

“Access, or the lack thereof, is the No. 1 reason cited by hunters for forgoing time afield,” said BHA Conservation Director John Gale. “Without sufficient access, we would be unable to chase upland birds, hunt ducks and other waterfowl, stalk big game and cast a line for fish. All of our traditions rest on our having the places and the opportunities to pursue them. We appreciate the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recognition of this one inarguable fact.

Sea Falcon’s Drain Inchiku Jig

Inchiku jigs were once a well-kept secret among Japanese commercial fishermen. The name, Inchiku  roughly translates to: “So easy, it must be cheating,” but it’s not. They’re all entirely legal and highly effective, but the secret is out. Inchiku jigs are now found all across Japan, and thanks to an exclusive arrangement with SPRO® and Gamakatsu®, Sea Falcon® Drain Inchiku jigs are now available in the USA.

The body of the Inchiku jig is meant to imitate a baitfish and will glow in the water. The jig falls with a side-to-side flutter that varies from narrow to wide and rises in sweeping arcs. The attached squid skirt adds extra action while concealing the assist hooks as it moves. Each jig comes with paired Gamakatsu assist hooks to ensure you hook more fish and keep them hooked all the way to the boat.

Inchiku jigs feature two different attachment points, one closest to the ear and the other in the middle of the back of the lure, each offering a different action. The former is the most common way of attaching an Inchiku jig and provides the standard slow-jig presentation with a fluttering action from the squid skirt. The latter provides a wider fluttering action and makes the squid skirt move around.

Drain Inchiku jigs are available in 45 and 60-gram mini-versions and full-sized 120, 150, 200, and 300-gram models to adjust to anglers’ varying depths and current conditions. These jigs are made with premium components and a hand-painted finish. It is easy to “match the hatch” to the reef and wreck being fished with 7 different colors to choose from.

Each jig is handmade and painted to produce the rich transparency and appearance of a small, lively fish while ensuring your lures will stand up to repeated attacks from the toothiest predators. Sea Falcon meticulously treats the surface of every jig by applying over 20 clear coatings, then polishing each lure twice. In addition, they enhance the appeal of each lure with aluminum or holographic applications. Hook eyes are a part of the same one-piece wireframe to ensure superior strength and lure integrity.

Elevate Your Trolling Motor Game

Innovative Electrical Accessories from Pro Controll Keep the Focus on Fishing

Electric trolling motors are essential accessories on any boat. Anglers rely on trolling motors to handle a wide range of tasks on the water, including propulsion on electric motor-only lakes, fine-tuning mobile presentations, and providing precision boat positioning – enabling the perfect cast and putting more fish in the boat. Motors must be installed and rigged perfectly – especially their power delivery system – to achieve optimum on-the-water performance. Electrical accessories from Pro Controll make quick work of the trolling motor rigging process, delivering many seasons of worry-free motor use and allowing anglers to focus their attention on landing the next trophy. Dealers, marine electronics installers, and anglers alike can now tap into Pro Controll’s expertise to rig motors the right way – the first time.

60 Amp Trolling Motor Circuit Breaker

Modern trolling motors contain circuit boards and other electronic components that must be protected from unexpectedly high electrical current, which may occur during a power surge, a short circuit, or an overload situation. Sending too many amps to the motor is one of the quickest ways to turn a fishing trip into an extended – and expensive – visit to the repair shop.

The 60 Amp Trolling Motor Circuit Breaker from Pro Controll is the fastest, most reliable way to protect your trolling motor from electrical damage caused by excessive current. This precision-engineered, in-line circuit breaker installs easily on the red/positive wire that delivers power from the battery system to the trolling motor. If more than 60 amps of current flows toward the motor – even if only momentarily – the circuit breaker opens immediately to protect the motor and its electrical components. Anglers can easily reset Pro Controll’s 60 Amp Trolling Motor Circuit Breaker and get back to fishing once the short circuit has been addressed or the overload situation ends.

The Association Commends the Service for Awarding $7.6 Million in Grants to Support Imperiled Species

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies applauds the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for awarding $7.6 million in grants to state and territory fish and wildlife agencies through their Competitive State Wildlife Grant (C-SWG) Program.  These grants will be used for the benefit of fish, wildlife and their habitats, especially species of greatest conservation need identified in State Wildlife Action Plans.

“We appreciate the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for releasing this critical funding for fish and wildlife conservation,” said Tony Wasley, Director of the Nevada Department of Wildlife and President of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. “This funding will help states and territories address critical fish and wildlife needs by supporting species and habitats listed in approved state wildlife actions plans and encouraging key partnerships for wildlife conservation.”

The complete list of 2022 State Wildlife Grants competitive projects can be found here.

The C-SWG Program, along with pending legislation such as the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, is imperative for states to implement their science-based wildlife action plans and allow state and tribal wildlife managers to proactively conserve fish and wildlife species of greatest conservation need before federal listing under the Endangered Species Act is warranted.

The C-SWG Program is part of the larger State Wildlife Grant (SWG) Program that awards grants according to a formula described in the annual appropriations act and based on a state or territory’s geographical size and population. For more information on the SWG program click here.

Millennium Treestands GB-100 Buck Blind

Ground blinds for hunting come in all styles, shapes, and sizes. Durability and reliability, especially during periods of nasty weather, are as essential to a hunter as concealment. Lightweight pop-up blinds have their place, but many hunters opt to situate a blind in a desirable location and leave it for weeks or longer. It’s frustrating when you show up to hunt only to find those lightweight blinds battered and broken, lying in a muddy ditch or twisted against a tree. It is all too easy for those blinds to be ripped from the ground during a windy storm.

Millennium Treestands’ GB-100 Buck Blind offers relief, giving added security to hunters who want their blinds to stay put. Weighing in at almost 83 pounds, it stands tough as a beefy blind. Its anchoring system is robust, using steel ground stakes that are ½-inch thick and 18 inches long. These stakes help ensure that wind gusts don’t enter at ground level and upend the blind.

The frame is constructed of heavy-duty, powder-coated steel, not lightweight fiberglass that can snap when stressed. The heavy-duty outer shell is made from water-resistant fabric. Loops added to the material make brushing out the blind a breeze. The loops can also add rope tie-downs for further strength and durability.

The GB-100 Buck Blind can be erected on the ground or on an existing platform. The multi-configuration windows and interior are black, affording ultimate concealment. Each window has an adjustable height shooting rest, making it ideal for rifle, shotgun, or crossbow hunting. It’s big enough to accommodate standing shots with a bow, at 84 inches wide, 48 inches long, and 84 inches tall in the center. With so much room, sleeping out in your blind is no issue. The GB-100 Buck Blind is built for comfortable, long-haul hunts when needed.

While the GB-100 Buck Blind is no run-and-gun lightweight, hunters looking for a durable, reliable, and portable alternative to costly fixed blinds made from wood or plastics will find it an outstanding solution.

Create Professional Hunting Videos With These Tips

Hunting, fishing, and trapping are hobbies practised by many people in the world. Some people enjoy the competition of hunting while others enjoy being out in nature. When a hunting adventure goes well, memories are created and shared with others. Whatever your motivation, it is important to have high-quality video recordings of your hunts to show off those incredible animal kills to people you know and share them with friends. Hunting videos have been a recent trend as they allow others to experience the thrill of the hunt from their computer screen! There are many ways you can create hunting footage that is professional grade. This article will provide you with valuable tips to ensure your videos are top-notch!

Tips for Creating Professional Hunting Videos:

1. What Equipment to Use:

One of the most important things when recording high-quality hunting videos is to have good equipment. There are two main things that you will need to film an awesome video: a camera and a tripod. You must have the steadiest hands possible, so a tripod is essential for filming those awesome shots of your kill. A digital SLR camera is typically the best option when choosing a camera because it allows you to zoom in on small details and record good audio. However, this may be impractical for large game hunting video recording as it introduces more potential for motion blur after zooming in on your subject. You should also always use a good video editor, as it can be beneficial when it comes to cutting and trimming the captured footage. You can trim video clips and edit transitions to make your materials look perfect!

2. Structure the video around a story

The most compelling videos are the ones that tell a story. The best way to do this is to record what is happening around you and narrate it if possible. You should have a beginning and an end (Catch Phrase) for your video. Some great ways to start the video are with personal stories or relevant quotes that have meaning behind them. This will intrigue people into watching your video and give them a reason to keep watching. You could also use footage you took during your hunt at the beginning of the video. For example, if you were hunting during the evening hours and you captured a deer, then the very start of your video could be a scene from such an event. Also, having more than one person narrate your videos is also a great idea because it will make it feel more authentic.

3. Shooting in High Quality

A difficult task that many novice hunters fail at is shooting high-quality footage. When shooting video, the total quality matters more than the actual resolution of your camera or camcorder. This is because camera sensors are getting larger and larger, so taking a picture in high quality should be the priority. The resolution of a camera or camcorder determines the quality of your video. For example, if you shoot a 720p video, each frame will take up one-eighth of an inch on average. This is why it is important to shoot with higher quality. Shooting in 4K (Ultra HD) will require a lot more storage space, but it provides the most detail and clarity.

4. Lighting and Camera Angle

Shooting outdoors, especially in the middle of the day, is a challenge because natural light is limited. If you want to capture videos with high-quality photos and videos, you must be able to adjust lighting as needed. Shooting at an angle also makes a big difference in creating professional hunting footage. Shooting from above when there are no obstructions in the frame can make a difference when it comes to quality. Shooting from a low angle can make the footage more compelling as well.
