12 Tools You Might Need When Setting Up Your First Long-term Hunting Camp

If you’re interested in establishing a permanent hunting camp, you may want to start with a temporary set up that you can try in a couple of locations before you build a permanent structure. The ideas below can increase your safety and make your hunting camp experience an enjoyable bonding event free of hazards.

Maintenance Tools

Gun Cleaning Kit

Your hunting trip may require you to carry a gun in damp, cold conditions. Keeping things clean, oiled and as dry as possible will make it much easier to hit your target. A simple gun cleaning kit that you can carry in a pack is critical.

Bow and Arrow Care

Carefully monitor the condition of the center of your bowstring at the end of each day and be ready to replace it while on the trail. Make sure you have a place to unstring and store your bow each night to avoid losing spring, and carry wax to keep wooden bows protected against damp.

Security Tools

Consider a Camper

If you plan to hunt in bear country, don’t plan to stay in a tent. Be prepared to sleep in something hard-sided. Invest in something hard-sided for your butchering and skinning site as well.

Your food, your garbage, the animals you hunt and their offal can all attract bears. Consider investing in a small utility trailer with a metal floor to use as a skinning and gutting shack that you can easily hose out after cleaning up. You can also hitch this up and move it far from your camper each night to keep down your exposure to scavengers that will be drawn by the blood after you secure the meat and skins.

“Being able to travel and meet these students and share their experiences is very rewarding,” Christians said. “And to be supported by Ducks Unlimited, the world’s leading waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization makes it even better. We share the importance of the R3 movement while growing the collegiate audience. This year’s tour begins in South Dakota for early-season Canada geese in August and continues across the country through February. I can’t wait to show these exciting hunts to our followers and supporters.”

The Elegant Simplicity of the Ned Rig

Dr. Jason Halfen

Epic days on the water are few and far between. Indeed, late summer can be a challenging time to pursue both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Quality fish that were easy to locate and catch in June and July are now perplexing. Sultry water temperatures contribute to our tribulations, driving fish either into heavy cover or down deep to find respite from the heat. Another challenge working against anglers – both in the shallow slop and the deep basin – is an abundance of forage: there is, quite simply, so much food available that bass have a LOT to choose from. It can be hard for an artificial bait to stick out as a vulnerable prey item amid Nature’s abundance.

How can we solve the late summer bass puzzle? Consider Midwest Finesse Fishing – or the Ned Rig – a presentation that has, quite simply, taken the bass fishing world by storm. A refinement of finesse techniques practiced and espoused by tournament anglers for many years, the Ned Rig was brought to the forefront of contemporary finesse techniques by Kansas-based angler and outdoor writer Ned Kehde. This unassuming presentation has been responsible for a staggering number of bass fishing success stories, especially when finesse becomes the order of the day.

The Business End of the Ned Rig

The classic bait for the Ned Rig bait looks like a stickworm that has been cut in half. Looks can be deceiving, however. The highly-refined Ned Rig presentation truly shines with a bait made from a unique, 21st-century soft plastic compound called ElaZtech, available exclusively from Z-Man

Federal sponsored shooters Vincent Hancock, Kayle Browning and Brian Burrows captured medals in their events against the world’s best on the biggest stage. Federal sponsored shooters Austen Smith and Derrick Mein also competed and turned in excellent performances but fell short of reaching their goals of an Olympic medal.

“Our company couldn’t be prouder of the performances of our sponsored team of world class shooters at the Olympic games,” stated Jason Vanderbrink, President of Federal Ammunition. “They competed at the highest level against the world’s best shotgun shooters and were simply amazing. It brings such pride to our dedicated American employees that these athletes achieved their dreams of standing on the podium with an Olympic medal having used our American made products,” stated Vanderbrink.

Vincent Hancock is now a 3-Time Olympic Champion following his gold medal performance in Tokyo. Hancock made the Men’s Skeet finals in a shoot-off and then bested the remaining five contenders hitting 59 of 60 targets, setting an Olympic record. Hancock is the first shooter to ever win three gold medals in this event, adding to the ones he won in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Kayle Browning captured a silver medal in Women’s Trap. Browning, an Arkansas native, shot her way into the finals in the sixth position and then climbed into the final pairing with some clutch shooting. The first time Olympian missed extending the match by one target but was elated winning silver for the United States of America.

In its Olympic debut, Federal-sponsored athlete Brian Burrows and teammate Madelynn Bernau claimed the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The pair qualified for the bronze match by posting a 146/150 in the qualifications. In their bronze medal match, they faced the mixed team from Slovakia which included the women’s individual gold medalist in trap. The pair of Burrows and Bernau won in a dramatic shoot-off to finish third and represent the USA on the podium.

The Association Applauds Conservation Provisions in Senate Infrastructure Package

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies commends the Senate for advancing high priority conservation provisions included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This week, the full Senate approved the bipartisan infrastructure package by a vote of 69-30, priming reauthorization for critical programs including the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund and the Abandoned Mine Land Trust Fund while creating historic funding sources for terrestrial and aquatic species passage.

“On behalf of our state agencies and the nation’s millions of hunters and anglers they serve, we thank the Senate and the bipartisan negotiators behind this package for their commitment to conservation,” said Sara Parker Pauley, Director of the Missouri Department of Conservation and President of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. “We thank the Senate Committee on Commerce for advancing reauthorization of the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund through 2026, particularly Committee Chair Cantwell and Ranking Member Wicker for their leadership.”

For over 70 years, the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund has provided funding for important aquatic conservation, access, and safety projects. This reauthorization will direct more than $650 million of user-generated fees every year to make sure this critical work can continue.

“Building even further on the successful legacy of Dingell-Johnson, the additional funding provided for aquatic organism passage is a generational victory for conservation and these provisions will set the stage for the development of ecologically and economically sustainable infrastructure for years to come,” added Parker Pauley.

“This legislation is filled with the foresight we need to meet unprecedented challenges,” said Ron Regan, Executive Director for the Association. “We are deeply grateful to Chairman Carper, Ranking Member Capito, and the Committee on Environment and Public Works for recognizing and providing for the needs of terrestrial and aquatic species within transportation funding. Habitat connectivity provisions like the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program offer the best possible return on investment for Americans, ensuring multi-benefit solutions to critical issues of public safety, infrastructure resilience, and robust species populations.”

NWTF and TriStar Renew Their Partnership

EDGEFIELD, S.C.—The National Wild Turkey Federation renewed its partnership with TriStar Arms, aiming to increase hunting participation nationwide.

Through the partnership renewal, TriStar is an official NWTF National Mentored Hunt sponsor. Hundreds of state and local NWTF chapters across the country host mentored hunts that introduce new or lapsed hunters to the outdoors.

NWTF’s mentored hunts entail a learning and safety course, the hunt itself and, often, a how-to wild gaming cooking component. NWTF state and local chapters host these events throughout the year for a variety of game animals, including wild turkeys, deer and dove, among others.

TriStar is also a sponsor for the NWTF Mentored Hunt Incentive Program, which encourages people to continue to mentor new hunters outside of NWTF mentored hunts.

“Having dedicated partners like TriStar is critical in combating the decline in hunting participation,” NWTF CEO Becky Humphries said. “We are proud to continue our partnership with TriStar and, together, leverage resources, expertise and dedication to ensure hunters continue to serve as America’s leading conservationists today and long into the future.”

How To Keep Fish Fresh While Fishing

Fishing is fun and a great way to spend time outdoors, but you don’t want to come home empty-handed—you want to bring home a few of the hard-fighting, bragging fish from your escapade.

Unfortunately, fish flesh deteriorates rapidly after the fish dies, and when you have one bad fish in your pack, chances are it will spoil all of the others, and you don’t want this.

To enjoy a fresh, scrumptious fishmeal, you should strive to keep the fish as fresh as possible.

Are you wondering how to keep fish fresh while fishing? It’s actually easier than you think, and there are plenty of ways you can go about it. Some of these ways include:

Ice the fish

It doesn’t get easier than this, and the beauty is that ice fish has excellent flavor and texture.

The McGovern Outdoor Journey

The McGovern Outdoor journey started with a road trip.  Never experiencing much outside the Midwest, our founder, Colleen McGovern, fell in love with hiking in the National Parks and cherished each trail map.

When she tried to replace her tattered trail maps with something beautiful to hang on her wall, she came up empty handed and decided to create her own. She got to work leaning on her experience while working at National Geographic, and soon found demand for her decorative trail maps from friends, family and ultimately the National Parks.

McGovern Outdoor expanded into a full line of accessories, gear and home goods. Each collection showcases high quality designs, original maps and illustrations of the places & trails we love.  Today the McGovern Outdoor brand can be found across the country in specialty retail stores such as L.L Bean, National Parks and Ski Resorts.

McGovern Outdoor is honored to be a National Park partner and a member of 1% for the Planet.
