Winter Trail Camera Setups

With deer season coming to a close, it may be tempting to pull your cameras and store them until next season.  However, I enjoy knowing what’s going on during the entire year, including the predators that roam the location, if bucks are shedding their antlers, and the number of deer that frequent that spot.  I usually opt for the annual service on trail cameras and pay for the cell signal whether the camera is posted or not.

Learn from Your Cameras

Each of the small saplings in this picture has been rubbed by deer during the rut.  It’s part of a saddle where I have a Stealth Cam 360 Revolver to cover the entire crossing.  Once the rut ended and the firearm season opened, that hot spot became as cold as the white covering you see.  In January, only two deer crossed this saddle.  On the positive side, only one coyote was seen, indicating a low number of predators in the area.

Consider a Solar Panel

If you are considering buying new cameras, I strongly recommend paying extra for ones with a built-in solar panel.  Frigid winter temperatures heavily tax batteries; some won’t last a month in freezing weather.  Moultrie sells a small solar panel with a built-in battery.  This way, the sun charges the panel’s battery with your camera batteries as a backup.  Using an auxiliary panel, you can position the cell for maximum solar exposure without facing the camera into the sun, which will cause false triggers and poor image quality at sunrise.  For Moultrie products, click here.

The "Boondocking" Lifestyle is Growing

2 minutes reading time (300 words)

Boondocking—also known as dry camping, dispersed camping, or off-grid RVing—is becoming increasingly popular among RV enthusiasts. Instead of staying in traditional campgrounds with hookups, boondockers park in remote areas without water, electricity, or sewer connections, embracing a more independent and adventurous lifestyle.

Why Is Boondocking Becoming More Popular?Freedom & Flexibility – No reservations, no crowded campgrounds—just wide-open spaces and stunning views.Cost Savings – Many public lands, such as BLM (Bureau of Land Management) areas and National Forests, allow free camping.Technology Makes It Easier – Solar panels, lithium batteries, and portable water filtration systems help RVers stay off-grid longer.Remote Work Friendly – With Starlink and mobile hotspots, digital nomads can work from anywhere.Eco-Friendly & Minimalist Appeal – Living off-grid encourages resource conservation and a simpler lifestyle.Where Can You Boondock?BLM Land & National Forests – Many areas in the U.S. allow free or low-cost camping.Wildlife Management Areas – Some states permit camping on designated public lands.Rest Stops & Parking Lots – Some businesses (like Cracker Barrel & Cabela's) allow overnight stays for travelers.Harvest Hosts & Boondockers Welcome – Membership networks that connect RVers with private landowners offering free stays.Boondocking Essentials

✅ Solar Panels & Batteries – To keep power running off-grid
✅ Water Storage & Filtration – For extended stays
✅ Composting or Portable Toilet – No sewer hookups mean self-sufficiency is key
✅ Propane or Portable Stove – Cooking without electricity
✅ Trash & Waste Management – Leave no trace!

Wildcrete- The Ultimate in 3D Target Realism

Wildcrete targets came from an African manufacturer who sold ultra-realistic lawn ornaments made from concrete.  An entrepreneur wondered if these lifelike models could be molded in foam and become 3D targets.  In a word, “Yes,” you can now purchase a host of animals never seen on a 3D course before.  Made from foam, these targets are IFAA-approved and shipped from California. Examples are lynx, rusa deer, scarecrow, mountain lion, sambar deer, werewolf, and many others.

Unique Forms

The black sable, shown above, is one of the most majestic trophy animals on earth, and whether this is your dream hunt or you just want to spice up your practice sessions, this foam target is bound to create excitement.  Scoring rings are in traditional locations for North American animals and are ideal ways to pass a dull winter or tune up for next fall.

Morrell’s Mod Pro Target Saves Time and Money

Every archer needs a sturdy practice target, and Morrell has transformed its Mod Pro bag target into a precise tuning instrument.  All scopes and some compound sights are calibrated to adjust the point-of-impact a fixed amount, usually 1/2 or 1/4 inch at 20 yards.  Often, archers guess an arrow’s impact by estimation instead of carrying a ruler with them.  Although this can eventually work out, it usually requires adjusting back and forth to get the arrow on target.

Mod Pro 24

Since archers sight their bows multiple times a year, the folks at Morrell boosted this process significantly by placing a one-inch tuning grid on one side of their bag-style targets.  Instead of estimating how many inches an arrow impacts off the mark, the tuning grid does that measurement for you.  I want my arrows to impact 1 inch high at 20 yards on crossbow scopes so that I can quickly point and shoot.  I’m also a huge fan of single-dot red dot scopes, and this gives me a kill zone shot nearly to 30 yards with a center-shoulder aiming point.  Depending on the weight of your arrow and the speed of your bow, performance will vary greatly, yet the tuning grid helps keep the visual image of your bow’s performance clearly in mind.

The full-face tuning grid is a matrix of one-inch squares, and the larger display is divided into more than a dozen smaller grids.  During your tuning sessions, you can aim at small, larger, square, and even no bulls-eyes.  Your target will last for years if it does not become a family heirloom, not to mention a standard target face on the reverse side.  Look for this unique tuning target at local archery shops or order online at Morrelltargets.com

January 2025, Accokeek, MD – Waterfowl enthusiasts throughout the world count Franchi’s Affinity shotguns as their trusted partners in the duck blinds (next to their faithful and hard-working dogs, of course). With its refined ergonomics, dependable performance, and Inertia Driven® semi-auto action cycling everything from standard to magnum loads, the Affinity series has delivered enviable results from ag fields and marshes to flooded timber.

Now, 13 years after its introduction, Franchi presents a redesigned platform with the all-new Affinity 3.5 Waterfowl Elite and Affinity 3 Waterfowl Elite. Built for the waterfowler, the Affinity Waterfowl Elite series enters 2025 with a fresh look that holds to the manufacturer’s Italian craftsmanship heritage while advancing performance-driven refinements in operation, comfort, and handling.

A quality waterfowling piece must be smooth to mount, easy to swing, and maintain a solid grip in the hands under the toughest of conditions. The Affinity Waterfowl Elite’s upgrades meet those criteria with a thinner forend and more robust checkering, offering exceptional grip for decisive mounting and muzzle control.

To ensure fast, fumble-free loading, the Affinity Waterfowl Elite comes with a new two-piece shell latch. This innovative design, combined with a larger loading port, makes reloads quick and easy when the birds are coming in hot. Other functional upgrades include a larger, elongated bolt release button and an oversized and textured bolt handle so you never miss a beat — even when wearing gloves.

The Affinity is known for its soft-shooting yet hard-hitting manners, and the revised Affinity Waterfowl Elite continues that tradition with a new adjustable TSA recoil pad system. In addition to its up to 50% reduction in felt recoil, this pad can be adjusted for length-of-pull by adding or removing the included spacer.

Industry Day at the Range™ Action Target Safety Award Recipient is Aero Precision

LAS VEGAS, Nev. January 23, 2025 – The Industry Day at the Range Safety Award, sponsored by Action Target, honors the participating company that demonstrates the highest standard of safety throughout the event. The 2025 Action Target Safety Award was awarded to Aero Precision at the Action Target SHOT Show booth.

“Safety through innovation is foundational to our industry’s growth. Action Target is proud to sponsor this award and recognize Aero Precision’s outstanding commitment to safety at Industry Day at the Range. Their dedication mirrors our mission to advance responsible firearms training through cutting-edge range technology and equipment,” says Kevin Tomaszewski, Sr. Vice President & General Manager at Action Target. “Together, we’re setting new standards for safety excellence in the shooting sports industry.”

Safety auditors judged shooting exhibitors during Industry Day, and the score was determined by range safety criteria such as providing hearing and eye protection, control of ammunition and safe handling of firearms on the firing line. Scoring also took into consideration the posting of rules, availability of first aid kits at the shooting stations and crowd management.

“Precision, discipline, and a commitment to safety are the true marks of excellence on the range. Winning the Range Safety Award isn’t just an achievement—it’s a testament to Aero Precision’s unwavering dedication to ensuring every shot is safe and controlled.” – Ryan Donahue | President of Sales and Marketing, Aero Precision

With a steady stream of individuals, media and buyers flowed through the exhibitor lanes testing products and watching demonstrations by top manufacturers and suppliers. The 2025 Industry Day at the Range was held at the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club in Boulder City, Nevada on Monday, January 20. Mineral Site Hacks for 2025

“I have several mineral licks scattered on this mountain and get great images of deer that often aren’t seen,” said the experienced hunter.  “I find an old stump in a good hunting spot, use an electric drill to make holes in the stump, and then cover it with minerals.  Over the next year or two, deer will eat the stump and the minerals.”  This hack will provide a long-term attractant and allow deer to fulfill their mineral needs continually.  Place a camera near the lick to monitor the size of deer visiting the lick.

Lucky Buck

Providing wild deer with minerals is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to help the deer in your area. Deer minerals like Lucky Buck contain minerals that deer need but don’t often eat regularly. During the spring and summer, deer crave minerals. If you provide the minerals, the deer won’t need to travel to someone else’s property to get them.  Lucky Buck

Big Tine Nitro Block

All the great antler-building components in Big Tine’s Nitro Mineral are pressed into a convenient and ready-to-use block. When hunters want to supplement but face issues like not living near their hunting property or having the time to recharge mineral sites regularly, the Nitro Mineral Brick fills that void. Deer can consume the block and continue using the site long after the block is gone due to the nutrients leached into the soil.  I’ve used these block with great success and have deer visit them continually.  Also, bucks seem to visit them more in daylight than food products.  Big Tine
