South Dakota’s Second Century Habitat Fund Launches “Winter Storm Initiative”

Sioux Falls, SD —- South Dakota’s Second Century Habitat Fund (SCHF) in partnership with South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks (GFP) have partnered together to raise awareness and financial needs, for the devastating effects the winter of 2022/23 has done to South Dakota’s Wildlife across the state.

South Dakota was stricken with heavy snowfall and record-setting temperatures during the winter of 2022/23. These heavy snow falls in excess of two feet and, temperatures reaching in excess of negative 50 degrees are the harshest conditions put on South Dakota’s wildlife. As resilient as wildlife is, conditions such as these are nearly impossible to survive without the proper cover and accessible food sources. Due to the deep snow cover, much of South Dakota’s quality habitat has become unusable, and food sources have been covered up for months making it extremely difficult for the wildlife that was able to make it through the initial storms to survive the remaining winter months.

“Quality habitat is the key ingredient for abundant wildlife populations, especially during severe winters,” said Kevin Robling, GFP Secretary. “The availability of woody habitat, food plots, and other thermal cover are essential for wildlife in harsh winters and greatly influence overwinters survival.”

“This winter has been brutal across the state and if we want thousands of South Dakotans and non-residents alike to enjoy pheasant hunting in the fall, we’ve got to make sure we take care of these birds during tough winters. Proper cover and accessible food sources, especially in the late winter months are paramount for wildlife survival” said SCHF President Adam Bender.

Second Century Habitat Fund Inc. estimates providing up to $300,000 in project cost for the campaign. SCHF will be putting forward $100,000 to start the initiative, and them match up to $100,000 of private donor contributions in 2023. If you would like to support this initiative and are looking to make a significant impact on South Dakota’s wildlife you can make contributions at Second Century Habitat Fund Winter Initiative Donations over $50 will receive a Limited-Edition Second Century Habitat Fund hat.

Ducks Unlimited celebrates 2023 World Wetlands Day

Wetlands are being lost three times faster than forests

On Thursday, Feb. 2, Ducks Unlimited (DU) and conservationists worldwide will celebrate World Wetlands Day (WWD) to recognize the importance of wetland ecosystems for humans and wildlife. This year’s theme is “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration.”

Part of DU’s mission is to raise public awareness about the benefits wetlands provide as waterfowl habitats and as critical natural water filters. Wetlands provide many services to our communities, including flood storage, groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, enhanced fish habitat and much more.

WWD focuses on conservation solutions for these beautiful and critical landscape features that some describe as nature’s kidneys due to their ability to filter and clean water.

WWD commemorates the Feb. 2, 1971 signing of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran. Each year since the first celebration in 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, corporations and citizens representing all segments of society have taken advantage of the anniversary to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Convention in Ramsar in particular.

3 Reasons Seasoned Anglers Choose the FishAngler App

Finding the best tools for your next fishing trip out is about more than the bait you choose and the rod you pick. It’s about having the resources to make you a better angler—and fishing is a lot more fun when you’re good at it.

There’s no better resource out there than the pros. After all, it’s not about what you know, but who you know. If you want to find the pros, you’ve got to go where the pros are, and that’s on the fishing app FishAngler. Here’s three reasons why.

1. Open Access to a Community of Fishing Pros

Whether your favorite fishing trips are solo or partnered, you never have to go without the experience of all your favorite anglers in your back pocket—literally. One of the ultimate features that marks Fishangler as the best fishing app on the market today is its unlimited access to a community of anglers around the world. From favorite fishing spots, top-performing bait, and even favorite times of day to fish, anglers in the community upload photos of their catches along with everything they used to reel them in. Not to mention any tricks of the trade they leave in their captions exclusively for their fellow fishing followers.

FishAngler isn’t the only app to have such a rich pool of social sharing capabilities. Fishbrain is a popular app that sport similar social feature; the difference is that FishAngler doesn’t hide theirs behind a pay wall. FishAngler is known to be the best fishing app for anglers, by anglers, which makes it the ultimate tool for not only building your skills, but your community as well.

2. Data-Packed Features for Fish-Packed Coolers

It’s not just the pros with the deep wells of knowledge, though. In the same way Fishbrain keeps its community behind locked doors, so it keeps its most useful data-mining tools as well. FishAngler unlocks the best-kept secrets of the most skilled anglers out there by compiling the data and trends of anglers everywhere and delivering them directly to your smartphone. With data trends for best catches in your favorite body of water, there’s no pond, lake, or river that you can’t master.

Bucks County, Pa. (January 2023) – Cold Case Initiative (CCI), a nonprofit assisting agencies with funding to offset the cost of techniques used to solve cold cases, violent crimes, missing persons, and unidentified decedents, is pleased to partner with Innovative Forensic Investigations (IFI), an investigative genetic genealogy firm providing services to law enforcement and government agencies nationwide. IFI will provide CCI access to its full suite of investigative genetic genealogy services. CCI will fund any legitimate investigative step needed in a cold case in addition to investigative genetic genealogy.

“I am extremely excited about this partnership because I know it will lead to violent crimes getting solved and unidentified victims having their names restored,” commented retired Pennsylvania State Trooper Cpl. Tom McAndrew, a special advisor to CCI’s non-profit board and director of law enforcement relations at IFI. He continued, “CCI was started by seasoned detectives whose only motivation was to help law enforcement agencies solve cold cases and fight for victims, which is the same like-minded mission as IFI. CCI and IFI recognize that law enforcement agencies are called upon to do many things every day, and this often allows little budgeted funding for cold cases. CCI hopes to help defray those costs and eliminate this hurdle. We are proud of this partnership and look forward to many good things to come.”

“At IFI, we believe in the power of collaboration while upholding the standards of our judicial system and are excited to partner with such professionals whose mission aligns so well with what we do and believe in,” Jennifer Moore, CEO and founder of Innovative Forensics Investigations, commented. “CCI is doing such positive work and providing much-needed funding for deserving law enforcement agencies. We are happy to partner with CCI and provide our investigative genetic genealogy services to help solve more cases and provide resolution for victims and their families.”

Bowhunters Will be Thrilled with APEX’s new Single-Caliper Kingpin

Verdict Single Jaw BOA Release

When it comes to releases, bowhunters and target archers want options, and true to form, APEX Gear has delivered once again. The index-finger release crowd demands quality, functionality, durability, comfort, and consistency, and for 2023 APEX gives this crowd the Verdict Single Jaw BOA Release.

Many shooters favor a single jaw release due to its simplicity. Depress the trigger, the top jaw opens, and the bottom jaw, part of the release head, remains stationary. Many archers love the idea of fewer working parts, and the compact head design on the Verdict helps boost the ease of D-loop attachment, and the black-polished head boosts D-loop longevity. The forward trigger position allows the shooter to get into the trigger easier, and when shooters can find the trigger quickly and get comfortable with the trigger, target-panic is less likely. Sweetening the pot is the sear-less firing mechanism, which promises simplicity and remarkable shot-to-shot consistency. Each shot is crisp and ultra-clean.

Comfort is found in the padded wrist strap, and the BOA Fit System — no buckles or Velcro, means an effortless, consistent strap-to-wrist fit. Velcro is loud and leather buckle holes wear over time, making exact wrist-to-strap fluidity impossible. With the BOA Fit System, the fit and feel around the wrist is precise every time, making repeatable anchor point positions possible. The release head pivots out of the way when not in use, keeping the head and post out of the way when you’re pushing through heavy brush or walking to and from the treestand. Customization is boosted through the adjustable head design, which can be lengthened or shortened along a threaded post to ensure maximum customization.

The Terminus Single Jaw BOA Release is available through shooting sports retailers

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Site Selection and Land Prep for Spring Planting

Alachua, FL (January 26, 2023) – For those who plan their spring planting early, Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers a vast array of tools and knowledge hunters need to enrich their land and ensure that the plants thrive for many years. Mast orchards are a very effective and popular way to attract and hold more wildlife. Savvy hunters should remember the 5 Ps: Proper Planting Prevents Poor Performance.

Planning is essential to maximize a property’s potential to hold and feed whitetails. First, select the optimal site for each specific variety of trees and shrubs. Pick a location with good soil drainage. Most mast-producing trees and shrubs prefer well-drained, sandy-loam soils but will grow on other soil types with good drainage. Avoid areas with soil that stays wet for long periods, such as creek bottoms or low spots that stay saturated during snowmelt in spring.

Plants are conditioned to withstand winter cold, but too much cold at the wrong time can harm growth and fruit production. Avoid frost pockets where cold air or late frosts settle at the bottoms of valleys, where unseasonable frosts may damage blossoms and fruits. Instead, seek areas with good air circulation, such as on the top or side of a hill.

Plants need the right combination of three things to grow: moisture, soil nutrients, and sunlight. Pick a location with good sunlight. In general, that means open areas. Old, abandoned fields make great places to establish mast orchards. If you have food plots, plant trees along the edges rather than in the middle, as deer will be more inclined to feed along the edges in daylight. You can even plant in the forest, provided you pick tree-fall gaps or canopy openings where the mast trees will have sufficient sunlight above.

Don’t be afraid to think backward. In addition to seeking the optimal site for each specific variety of mast-producing trees and shrubs, consider figuring out which species will do best in the chosen areas. Also, consider the position of each mast plot and try to position them, so they work in concert with each other and other features on the landscape.

Southeastern Alaska Backcountry Lands to Be Permanently Conserved

Roadless areas in the Tongass National Forest offer irreplaceable big game habitat, host valuable salmon fisheries

WASHINGTON – Unique backcountry fish and wildlife habitat in America’s largest national forest, the Tongass in Alaska, will once again be conserved under a rule finalized today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This afternoon’s announcement by the USDA is the latest decision affecting the long-term management of the 9.3 million acres of roadless backcountry lands in the Tongass.
