AMU’s Roe, Sherry Lead 2021 National Matches Smallbore Events

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – SPC Ivan Roe, 25, of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) was the leading scorer of the Three-Position Aggregate Smallbore competition, held during the annual National Matches at Camp Perry. The event was facilitated by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which began its smallbore match series back in 2018.

Though a recent addition to the CMP National Matches schedule, smallbore has been a staple at Camp Perry for decades – welcoming thousands of competitors over the years. For Roe, 2021 marked his very first experience competing in smallbore on the historical National Guard base.

Bremen Butler led the Junior Three-Position Aggregate at the National Matches.

“I really had no expectations,” he said of his first trip to Camp Perry. “Every day I got down, it was, ‘What’s going to happen today?’ It’s been a learning experience the entire time.”

Known for its inconsistent (to put it gently) conditions, Camp Perry challenged Roe in ways he didn’t anticipate.

In 2021, the Smallbore Small Arms Firing School appeared at Camp Perry for the second time and was led by SSF Gray (pictured) and other members of the AMU.

“I was told to prepare for it to be unbelievably windy,” he explained. “The first day was nuts – I’ve never been blown around in prone before. That was something completely new. They told me it was going to be windy but I wasn’t ready for how windy, exactly – but, I made it work.”

How to Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes

Did you know that there are over 3000 different kinds of mosquitoes in the world today?

The mosquito is one of the deadliest creatures in the world.  The mosquito itself is not a killer, but they are a vector or carrier for a number of deadly diseases for humans.  Mosquito-borne diseases cause over a million deaths worldwide each year, with a vast majority of those diseases effecting the elderly and our youth.

The majority of mosquito-borne diseases that cause the most deaths worldwide are transferred from three individual species of mosquitoes.  The Anopheles mosquitoes are the only mosquito that carries malaria, and they are also known to carry filariasis (elephantiasis) and encephalitis.  The Culex mosquitoes carry encephalitis, filariasis, and the West Nile virus.  The Aedes mosquitoes, including the Asian Tiger mosquito, carry yellow fever, dengue fever and encephalitis.  These mosquitoes carry disease through parasites attached to their body or through virus coming into the mosquito and then being transferred back to a new host through the saliva of the mosquito.

We know that mosquitoes as a vector are a tremendous killer of humans through carrying and transferring these diseases.  There are trillions of these flying insects worldwide.  What most people don’t understand is that mosquitoes are a major source of food and a strategic part of the ecosystem.  Bats, birds, fish, animals, dragonflies, frogs and more eat mosquitoes and the bodies of mosquitoes in the dirt and waters of our world create nutrients for many species.  Looking at current numbers, scientists are telling us that mosquitoes are increasing with higher global temperatures.

Mosquitoes have a life cycle of eggs, larva, pupa and adult.  The eggs are laid on the water surface and then descend into the water, feeding on algae and organic material.  They then rise as a pupa and then into adult flying insects.  It is the females that bite the skin and feed on the blood of animals and humans.  Horses, cattle and wildlife are the primary sources of blood for mosquitoes, although some hunters would swear they are the primary target of these biting insects.  The female mosquito transfers saliva into the host during the bite which causes a rash and transmits pathogens to these new hosts.

Summer Muskies Love Bucktails

Dr. Jason Halfen

Summer is the perfect time to churn the water with bucktails. Water temperatures are approaching their annual peaks, and muskies are on the chew, ready to chase down fast-moving presentations. Your hunt for summer muskies will begin with weeds, and it’s likely that you won’t need to look further than your lake’s dense beds of cabbage and coontail to garner all of the summer musky action you’ll ever need. Let’s examine the connection between weeds, in-line spinners, and summer muskies, so you can put more of these apex predators in the boat this season.

Of all the possible weed types found in musky waters, cabbage weeds and coontail will attract and hold the most fish. Cabbage grows with stout vertical stems, interrupted regularly by long, broad leaves. Coontail is somewhat less robust but grows in beds that are more dense than cabbage, and the overall cylindrical shape of a coontail stalk provides many of the same musky-attracting characteristics as cabbage. Indeed, both weeds cast shade within the water column, reducing local water temperature and providing respite from the bright midday sun. Dense stands of cabbage and coontail provide ample cover for baitfish and small panfish, guaranteeing that resident musky and pike have an abundant food supply.

Well-honed sonar interpretation skills will help an angler to identify the best weeds for summer musky fishing. Indeed, cabbage and coontail reveal themselves in excellent detail in Humminbird’s MEGA Side Imaging: cabbage weeds frequently have bright returns in Side Imaging, as their large, waxy leaves are excellent reflectors of sonar energy. Moreover, mature cabbage and coontail can both be quite tall, and as a result, cast characteristic, long sonar shadows in Side Imaging. So, if you’ve found a dense stand of weeds with bright Side Imaging sonar returns as well as long, dark sonar shadows, chances are that you’ve located a bed of cabbage or coontail that may hold summer muskies.

If you haven’t yet added Side Imaging to your bag of fish-finding tricks, consider using an underwater camera to confirm weed identifications and focus your musky fishing. The Aqua-Vu Micro Revolution Pro 5.0 camera is a compact underwater camera system that fits into any musky angler’s boat – and budget. The camera’s optics provide a crisp underwater video feed in clear to moderately clear waters and do an excellent job of identifying both structure and fish. The Aqua-Vu Micro Revolution features a long-lasting lithium Ion battery system to power many musky hunting trips and includes an integrated cable management system that makes deploying and stowing the optics quick and easy. For an ultra-clear, HD-quality video feed, consider the larger Aqua-Vu HD10i Pro Gen 2camera system, which will also function better in deep water and in those musky haunts with more noticeable stain – places like Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods, or tannin-stained waters of Wisconsin’s famous Chippewa Flowage.

Planning to Go on a Hunting Trip? Here’s How to Prepare

A hunting trip is an activity that takes a lot of careful planning. The better prepared you are, the more bountiful the trip is going to be. Whether you’re an experienced hunter or a newcomer to the hobby, you might want to read on and check what you should bring on your next hunting trip.

Ready Your Permits

In most states, hunters are required to get permits before they can begin hunting. It’s very important that you have your permits ready. Hunting without the proper documents is punishable by law. Coordinate with your local government agency with regards to the guidelines for legal hunting.

Study The Hunting Area And The Weather

Not studying the hunting area before the day of the hunt is a bad idea. Aside from getting into all sorts of trouble, you also risk yourself of encountering creatures you can’t handle. Ideally, you’d want to study the lay of the land as well as which animals inhabit the area too.

It’s also very important that you try to see what the weather will be like on the day of the trip. This really matters as it will help you wear the right clothing for the trip. Being properly dressed does wonders for any hunting trip as it allows you to hunt as comfortably as possible.

While you’re at it, determine what type of creatures you can hunt as well. Keep in mind that you’re not allowed to hunt any creature you see in a hunting ground. Rare and endangered species should definitely not be within your crosshairs.

All Natural Aubrey D.™ Specialty Condiments & Hot Sauces Are Just What The Younger Generation Craves

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people live – and eat forever. According to Jonna Parker of IRI’s Fresh Center for Excellence (www.iriwordlwide.com), since the start of the pandemic, 83 percent of all meals in the United States are being prepared in the home. A year ago, younger consumers were more likely to go out to eat; now, as restaurants have limited capacity and limited staff, even the youngest shoppers are buying food to prepare at home – many for the first time. And Aubrey D. Specialty Condiments & Hot Sauces from Gourmet Chips and Sauces are just what the younger generation is looking for.

According to the New York-based Specialty Food Association (SFA) (www.specialtyfood.com/), specialty condiments — which include international, innovative, and unique new flavors — account for about 20 percent of all condiment sales. The category grew by 16 percent since 2013 and is expected to grow another 19 percent by 2022. Cooking sauces, mayo (including a variety of bold new flavors) and hot sauce contribute most to sales, according to SFA. “They attract consumers seeking kitchen shortcuts,” said Denise Purcell, director at SFA. “Condiments in general tend to be a gateway category for specialty food newbies.” In addition, Purcell noted, “Younger consumers, especially Millennials, have an affinity for condiments to dress up entrées or prepared foods or takeout. Even younger consumers, the iGeneration, which is 18-23 years old right now, are most likely to say they use specialty foods for snacking, which bodes well for subcategories like salsa.”

Shelley Balanko, senior vice president of the Bellevue, Wash.-based Hartman Group (www.hartman-group.com), confirms what Purcell said. “Younger generations consistently index higher on searching for foods that are organic, free from additives and chemicals, sustainably produced, locally made and ethically sourced,” she said. Her research showed that 71 percent of Millennial and Gen Z shoppers look for foods with healthful benefits whether that be foods that help with eating in moderation (70 precent), are high quality (66 percent), have specific benefits for the body (63 percent) or are holistic (61 percent).

Gourmet Chips and Sauces – long recognized as among the best specialty food companies in the specialty food marketplace — offers a full line of Aubrey D. Rebel Hot Sauces, the only full line of hot sauces in the world where each sauce is designed around the unique flavors and heat of each individual pepper, and much more. The specialty company creates and manufactures its own brand of Aubrey D. and Aubrey D. Rebel Hot Sauces, Hot Condiments and Hot Snacks. Today the company offers a full line of all-natural kosher hot sauces from mildly hot to obscene, as well as an amazing line of all natural spicy condiments including Jalapeno Ketchup, Jalapeno Mustard, Jalapeno Honey Mustard, Chipotle Spicy Mustard, Relish, Horseradish Mustard, Chipotle Mayo; fiery Snack Dips; and the hottest potato chips available. All the company’s products are proudly made in the USA in order to be closest to the farms that grow the fruits, vegetables and hot peppers for its sauces, helping ensure the highest quality, best tasting and the hottest sauces on the market. All its potato chip snacks are made in the USA, kettle-cooked in sunflower oil with no trans-fat, are kosher and gluten free with no preservatives or additives and have a one-year shelf life.

Full Line Overview from Firminator: Best Food Plot Implement on Earth!

Ranew’s Outdoor Equipment offers a full line of implements for all your food plot needs. The Firminator G3 is by far the most versatile piece of equipment in the industry. It allows you to do all the necessary work of planting a food plot from start to finish with one implement.

A wide range of angle and pitch adjustments allows the Firminator’s heavy, 18-inch, notched 9-gauge steel disks to work the soil in a variety of situations. From the first cut into heavy sod, to lightly opening thatch and soil for over-seeding without disturbing existing forages, the Firminator is your best option.

The Accu-Seed System handles seeds of all sizes, from the tiniest clovers up to beans, peas and sunflowers. The system is ground-driven so seed is metered out relative to your speed. The seed will stop falling when the Firminator stops rolling to eliminate seed waste. An optional seed hopper agitator is also available for keeping seed blends thoroughly mixed and preventing small seeds from sifting through too quickly.

Disk blades can be adjusted up and out of the way, allowing the cultipacker to roll on the soil with additional frame weight being transferred to enhance the seed-to-soil contact that is critical for good germination rates.

For those who use a larger implement for ground tillage, but still want the precision of the Accu-seed system combined with a cast iron cultipacker, there’s the 4′, 5′, 6′ or 8′ Firmiseeder. This is also upgradeable to a Firminator with the purchase of the harrow parts.

Pope and Young, America’s leading bowhunting organization, held their 32nd Biennial Convention, where they celebrated 60 years of bowhunting heritage with an incredible attendance, great auctions, amazing seminars, and capped it off with the reveal of their updated logo, and expanded mission statement.

The bowhunting community clearly embraced the return to in person meetings, with the total attendance being just shy of 1,000 archers.  With their great corporate partners and outfitters, the Pope & Young live auction had over sixty hunts and products available for bidding.  Alongside the live auction, there were over 125 items in the silent auction, that included some truly one-of-a-kind items.

Michael Waddell delivered Friday Night’s keynote speech, one which was both entertaining and engaging for those in attendance.  A special thanks to Michael for hosting an impromptu meet and greet for over 100 people, who got to enjoy some time with himself, Remi Warren, Andrew McKean, and others, all over some hot pizza and cold beer.

With over 120 breath taking animals on display, and ten new world records, the Pope & Young Convention offers a big game display that can’t be seen anywhere else!

The convention offered a great opportunity to celebrate the first 60 years, but more importantly it was a time to look forward to the next 60 years for Pope and Young.  The Organization took this opportunity to unveil a new look and logo, but more importantly, a new redefined and expanded mission.  A mission that aims to

Chestnut Hill Outdoors Early and Late Drop Persimmons

Few fruits are more attractive to deer and other wildlife than ripe persimmons, and thanks to the folks at Chestnut Hill Outdoors, you can widen their window of attraction by planting early, mid and late varieties.

The attractive power of ripe persimmons to deer is nothing short of a natural phenomenon. As soon as these luscious, plump fruits hit the ground, the ground deer will be there to gobble them up and will keep coming as long as they keep falling. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several different persimmon varieties to increase that time period, each specially selected for its abundant fruit production.

The action kicks in when early drop Deer Candy Persimmons begin falling, from late August through October – about the time archery seasons kick in around the Country. Deer Candy Persimmons are all grafted female trees, which means they are vigorous and grow very rapidly, bearing 1-1/4′-1-½” diameter fruit in just 2-3 years, depending on care and climate.

Chestnut Hill Outdoors selected grafted American Persimmon varieties that are cold-hardy to address cooler climates so they will thrive over a much wider geographic area – Plant Hardiness Zones 5-9. In addition, their fruit drops over several months in late summer and early fall, offering a wide window of attractiveness and opportunity.

When their productivity starts to wane, late drop Deer Magnet Persimmons keep the momentum going and the deer coming through October and November in Zones 6-9. They, too, are grafted and should bear fruit in 2-3 years.

Made in America, Bond Arms’ Ultra-Compact Pistols Pack a Powerful One-Two Punch

It’s a dangerous world. For everyday protection, Americans want a compact, concealable handgun chambered in powerful threat-stopping cartridges. So for its discerning customers, Bond Arms builds the smallest, most powerful pistols in the industry – feature-filled modern derringers designed for defending patriots and their Second Amendment rights. The best part is that all Bond Arms handmakes all its guns in Texas, and each comes with a limited warranty!

Bond Arms pioneered the modern double barrel handgun adding safety features like a trigger guard, retracting firing pins and cross-bolt safety. Bond’s patented rebounding and locking hammer add an extra level of safety missing in early derringer-style guns. When the gun fires and the hammer hits the firing pin, it automatically jumps back into a half-cocked position and locks. The only way to fire the gun is by fully cocking the hammer and then squeezing the trigger. All Bond handguns feature one-handed operation, the key to a fast, reliable personal protection handgun.

Competition shooters love Bond Arms handguns, too. Bond Arms derringers are no stranger to the winners’ circle of the coveted SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) World Championships! With accolades from both competition and conceal carry users, Bond Arms handguns have earned the reputation as an effective sidearm.

Interchangeable barrels are another feature that sets Bond Arms apart, and swapping barrels is quick and easy! Derringer owners can change barrels to one of over 37 combinations in a matter of seconds, including barrels from 2.5- to 6-inches long, polished or matte finishes, and many popular handgun chamberings. All barrels fit all models of Bond Arms’ derringers. 100% barrel compatibility provides customized options for better concealability, a different look or different cartridge configurations. Bond Arms’ barrels perform with the style and reliability you expect from the Texas gunmaker who pioneered the modern double barrel handgun.

There is a misconception that small handguns lack stopping power. While this may be true for some small cartridges, Bond Arms chambers its guns in powerful, proven defensive rounds like 9mm, 45ACP, 40S&W, 45LC/.410, 357Mag, 10mm and more! All of these are more than capable of neutralizing any threat. These pint-sized pistols pack a potent punch.
