As a hunter, it is in my makeup to want to do everything I can to protect my eyes and my ears. Today we are going to talk about eye protection and we are not talking about shooting eye protection but every day working eye protection. I spend a vast amount of my time behind a computer screen so having eye protection from harmful blue light on my computer is incredibly important. USA Shooting athletes brought home a total of seven medals and a U.S. Paralympic quota from the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, Nov. 17-21.

A Team USA podium sweep secured our first three medals of the games. YanXiao Gong, Marco De La Rosa, and Mike Tagliapietra earned gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, in Mixed P3 25m Sport Pistol SH1.

“I am especially grateful that I am surround by the teammates I have,” said Gong, 2023 World Champion “Nothing beats having the stars and stripes on all three flag poles.”

De La Rosa earned USA’s fourth medal when he claimed the title of Parapan Champion in P3 Men’s Air Pistol SH1. De La Rosa also earned the U.S. a Paralympic quota for the Paris 2024 Games in the event. Gong joined him on the podium, taking bronze.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” said De La Rosa, a Marine Corps veteran. “I wasn’t focusing on trying to get first place. I was just doing my process.”

McLean, Va.—More than 130 union tradeswomen from 19 states as well as Canada and Denmark came together on December 1 for the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) All-Women’s Hike at Great Falls Park in McLean, Virginia, to kick off the 13th Annual Tradeswomen Build Nations Conference (TWBN)—the largest gathering of tradeswomen in the world.

Located 15 miles from Capitol Hill, Great Falls Park features breathtaking views of rushing falls and cascades where the Potomac River travels through the Mather Gorge. Participants loaded on buses, sponsored by the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Mason’s International Association (OPCMIA), in DC at 8 a.m. and headed to the park for a short hike on the River Trail before returning for the start of the conference.

“This is such an amazing opportunity, such a blessing,” said Victoria Sutherland, a member of Ironworkers Local 482 from Austin, Texas, as she stood atop a boulder overlooking the river. “Always go off the beaten path—that’s what we do. This is a great chance to get with my other sisters from across the nation and Canada.”

The women who participated in the hike represented 13 different unions—cement masons, electrical workers, insulators, ironworkers, painters, carpenters, laborers, plumbers and pipefitters, bricklayers, machinists, elevator constructors, operating engineers, and sheet metal workers.

These women are breaking barriers and paving the way for other women in the trades,” said USA Communications Manager Kate Nation. “They are just the type of women we need to inspire the next generation, especially young girls, to pursue outdoor sports like hiking, fishing, hunting, and camping and put their skills and knowledge to work for conservation.”

Kiersten Black of Sidney certainly isn’t the only Nebraska teenager to hunt big game this fall. She has, however, harvested an animal in the state that none of the others can claim — a bighorn sheep.

Black, 15, shot the world-class trophy-caliber ram Saturday, Dec. 2, on private land in the Pine Ridge escarpments southwest of Chadron. She won the permit when her name was the only one drawn from a pool of 3,524 applicants in a lottery for Nebraska residents, which requires just a $29 application fee.

Black took to the field Saturday morning with father Trevor, younger brother Reed and family friend Tate Pieper.

They caught sight of the big ram with a group of ewes first thing that morning, but the sheep slipped into the trees and wasn’t spotted again until after about seven hours of searching the area and its steep canyons.

With her father’s coaching, Kiersten made a successful stalk and shot on the huge ram at sundown with just 25 minutes of legal shooting light to spare.

Gage Smith, a 13-year-old boy from Tennessee, recently experienced a dream-come-true deer hunt, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Illinois NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen, United Special Sportsmen Alliance and other local organizations/businesses. The inclusive youth deer hunt was hosted at Southern Illinois University’s Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center.

The NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen events offer outdoor opportunities to individuals with injuries, mobility impairments or those requiring additional assistance. Similarly, the United Special Sportsmen Alliance, a non-profit wish-granting charity, specializes in providing critically ill and disabled youth with the chance to embark on outdoor adventure of their dreams.

“This year was our first year of hosting the NWTF + USSA partnership hunt,” said Lindsay Meverden, Assistant Director of Inclusive Recreation at Touch of Nature. “USSA provided us with the hunters and paid for their tags and NWTF Illinois Wheelin’ Sportsmen and their volunteers took care of the rest! They set all of the blinds, assisted with transportation to and from blinds, and provided each child with an experienced guide.”

Gage first became interested in the outdoors through small game hunts and fishing with his family. However, he had not had the opportunity to hunt any big game before the archery hunt in Illinois. Gage, accompanied by his parents, arrived excited for what the weekend had in store for him.

Every Spring break we take off on a road trip. We have been as far as Arizona and as quick as Iowa and each year it is a new adventure. On our longer trip last year, it would have been nice to have been able to make our own meals along the route and maybe have the opportunity to camp in some remote locations. With that idea in mind, we jumped on the opportunity to test out the Camp Chef Versatop 14 griddle and the Grill box that comes along with it. This week before the snow and the extreme cold really starts to hit home we decided to test out this grill and get familiar with how it works and learn a little bit about how to cook with this system.

We started off with the griddle and I chose to heat it up and let it run for about 20 minutes to get the grill nice and hot and burn off any oil and residue as well as make some breakfast. I whipped up some french toast and threw it on the griddle. French Toast is a staple in our house and just a little eggs and some milk, cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. It was so quick and easy to throw it on the griddle and cook that meal outside. Clean up was a matter of seconds and just a quick wipe down with a paper towel. I was able to enjoy my meal and I let the griddle cool down outside and all I had to clean up was a bowl, a plate and my fork.

We then decided to do a stir fry on the griddle. I cut up some onions, a little chopped garlic, some sliced mushrooms, broccoli and steak on the flat top griddle. A little bit of teriyaki and some fresh rice and it was a perfect meal for our Friday night date night. The griddle was so easy to utilize and the cleanup was complete in a matter of minutes. It makes it nice and easy to clean up and with the carry bag. With the griddle it has a nice and small grease or liquid trap that is easy to clean and held all the liquid from our meal. Clean up was super easy with a little water and a sponge and we were ready to pack up the unit.

One tip is that with this unit and the grill box, buy the cloth bags that you can get to transport these units. This allows you to quickly and easily slide these units in and out of the pick up truck or the car so you can have it ready for a quick meal or a tailgate lunch. This unit is also great to have on hunts because you can fry up some deer heart while butchering your deer or prepare warm breakfasts after a cold morning sit.

Tonight, we popped on the camp chef grill box and grilled up some Teriyaki skewers of chicken. We used chicken tenders soaked in lime and teriyaki and grilled them on the grill box with just a couple of turns. Stetson Bardfield earns gold in R5 Mixed Air Rifle Prone SH2 at the 2023 Parapan America Games in Santiago, Chile, Nov. 20, defending his title from the 2019 Games.

“I am feeling amazing,” said Bardfield, a Tokyo Paralympian. “I was definitely a little anxious at the beginning. I have a lot of worthy competitors, but I stuck to my shot plan, and it ended up carrying me through.”

Bardfield shot a final score of 253.4, breaking the Parapan American Games record he formerly set in 2019. The 2020 Paralympian triumphed over Alexandre Galgani, of Brazil, who took second. When Bardfield and Galgani were the last two competitors in the final, there were just two single shots left to take. Bardfield only had a .1 lead before the finals two shots.

“I was just trying to hold on,” said Bardfield. “At any time a shot can go wrong, and any person can take [the lead] from you in an instant. It was a very intense experience.”

Bardfield mentioned that he could feel his heart beating fast but that his mindset was to just do as best as he can and see where it goes from there. His mindset paid off, as he has now earned back-to-back Parapan American Games titles. He earned his first title at the 2019 Lima Parapan American Games.

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the preliminary deer harvest and license sale totals for the opening weekend of the 2023 gun deer season.

Preliminary figures indicate the number of deer hunters in Wisconsin slightly decreased compared to 2022.

As of midnight Sunday, Nov. 19, sales for gun, bow, crossbow, sports and conservation patron licenses reached 774,369. Of that total, 421,525 were for gun privileges only. The year-to-date sales for all deer licenses are down 0.61% from the same time last year.

The number of conservation patron licenses sold to date in 2023 is 1.5% higher than conservation patron licenses sold in 2022.
