How to Save Money for Outdoor Adventures (Or Your Hunting Adventures)

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the spending of hunters in the U.S. generates over $185 million per day for the economy. With expenses for things like licenses, firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, decoys, optics, travel, and lodging, hunting adventures can cost a lot of money.

Indeed, various kinds of outdoor adventures, from fishing and rock climbing to camping and horseback riding, can be costly, especially if you venture into the Great Outdoors regularly. The good news is, there are various ways in which you can save money for your hunting or outdoor adventures.

Track Your Spending to Identify Ways of Making Savings

To save money, you first need to know how much you spend. Therefore, you should track every penny you spend and analyze the data. You can then look at ways of cutting your spending.

For instance, if you buy just one cup of coffee each day, you could end up paying around a hundred dollars a month on just coffee, when you could switch to making your own and carrying a flask. Or, if you identify that you spend a lot on dining out each month, you could cut down on going to restaurants.

Everyone’s spending habits are different, but almost everyone can save money when they identify the things they pay for each month and select costs to cut back on.

Tribes Need Congress To Pass Wildlife Bill Now

Tribal Fish & Wildlife Leaders Visit DC to Urge Congress to Invest in Tribal Conservation through Passage of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act

Leaders in Tribal fish and wildlife management visited the Capitol last week to meet with Congress about the importance of Recovering America’s Wildlife Act for Tribal Nations. If passed, the bipartisan bill will provide $97.5 million to Tribes and $1.3 billion to states and territories each year for on the ground conservation.

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA) was developed in response to findings that 12,000 species in the United States are considered “at greatest conservation need.” Through allocating funding to on the ground conservation projects, this historic bill aims to proactively prevent species from becoming endangered. RAWA is monumental legislation for another reason as well, it would provide the first dedicated annual funding to support Tribal fish and wildlife conservation.

“We were never included,” said Gloria Tom, Director of the Navajo Nation Fish & Wildlife Department, “Until now.”

Tribes have fought for decades to be included in mainstream conservation funding but have been left out of programs such as the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration and Sport Fish Restoration Acts. This Tribal delegation continues to advocate for funding equity by asking Congress to prioritize passing RAWA this year.

Hornady’s Heavyweight, Lock-N-Load® Iron Press® Delivers

Hornady engineered the Lock-N-Load® Iron Press® to be the heaviest, most rigid press in its class. This single-stage unit, powered with a spring-assisted 1-1/8-inch solid steel ram, is perfect for anyone demanding precision and repeatability from their reloading press.

This 28-pound workhorse press is manufactured with exceptionally tight tolerances and a smooth operating system designed to deliver consistent precision year after year. The Iron Press features Hornady’s patented Lock-N-Load® Bushing System, which ensures dies and bushings are securely locked in place with a simple twist that engages six locking lugs.

Swapping out is straightforward when reloaders need to change to another cartridge size. Simply twist the die counterclockwise, remove it and insert your next preset Lock-N-Load® die and bushing. Dies locked in their Lock-N-Load® bushings remain as they are set, in perfect alignment and ready for their turn in the press.

The unit also features a patented shell holder platform that lets the operator de-prime a case, remove the case to chamfer or deburr, and then quickly replace and prime. The Iron Press’s accessory deck enables quick access to trays for bullets or cases and storage for chamfer and deburr tools, case neck brushes, primer pocket cleaners, and more.

The gravity-fed Automatic Priming System, sold separately or as part of the kit, blurs the lines between progressive and single-stage reloading by allowing more processes to happen simultaneously. The machine upgrade includes the automatic priming system, large and small primer tubes, large and small primer pick-up tubes, primer housing tubes, primer catch trays and a small parts bag.

CMP Instructors Oversee Youth Civil Air Patrol Event in Ohio

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) facilitated a youth Civil Air Patrol (CAP) outing at the Cardinal Shooting Facility – located just north of Columbus in Marengo, Ohio. The instructors for the event were CMP’s Dan Arnold and Dean Bates.

The training session at Cardinal Shooting Center began at 9 a.m., with a short briefing that included general firearms safety, range procedures and marksmanship fundamentals. A group of 48 cadets with varying firearm experience were in attendance as well as around 15 CAP senior members and a CAP Medical Officer.

Helping to lead on the range was CMP’s Dan Arnold.

During the day, cadets fired shots with .22 caliber rifles from the prone supported position at a distance of 50 yards on the range. After firing five shots, each cadet’s shot groups were evaluated. Instructors on the line helped the cadets make sight adjustments before an additional five sighting shots were taken.

Once the second groupings were evaluated and adjustments made, participants went on to fire 40 shots for record. Arnold and Bates carefully monitored the record firing, helping the cadets with additional sight adjustments, if needed. Most of the four targets used for record at each firing point showed improvement in shot groupings as the day went on.

Cadets fired from a prone, fixed position during the day.

The cadets firing in the event were vying for the accompanying NRA Pro-Marksman Badge by reaching a qualification score of 200 out of a possible 400 points (50 percent). Of those in attendance, 42 cadets achieved the minimum score and were awarded badges, with overall scores ranging from 180 to the mid-300’s.

ESCORT® Shotgun’s Hard-Hitting SDX

The ESCORT® SDX is part of Hatsan’s Versatile Tactical Shotgun (VTS) series. This modern sporting style shotgun is available in either 12 ga or .410 cal in black or FDE Cerakote. The synthetic polymer lower receiver features an alloy magazine well that ensures a smooth, durable product designed to last. Hatsan’s patented ThermoDefend forend absorbs and dissipates heat from the barrel while offering a comfortable, controlled grip on the weapon.

An active buffer tube absorbs recoil and sports a removable buttstock with elevation-adjustable cheek rest. The soft rubber ergonomic pistol grip is also removable and can be replaced with a wide variety of already available aftermarket options. The charging bolt is reversible to suit a wide variety of shooter preferences. A carry-handle rear sight and fixed front sight come equipped on each gun, but the included flip-up sights can be installed for use with mounted optics. The forend also features 4 picatinny rail locations to accommodate multiple accessory mounting options.

The 12-gauge models feature an 18″ barrel with removable chokes, including an extended cylinder bore choke brake that helps tame recoil with heavy shot or slugs. Standard Full and Improved Cylinder chokes are also included, with other options from HatsanUSA. Each gun ships with two 5-round magazines and a 2-round magazine that can be stored in the buttstock. The gun is chambered to accept 2 ¾” and 3″ shells and will cycle them interchangeably with no external adjustments required by the shooter.

The .410 models feature a 20″ barrel with an integrated choke suitable for both shot and slugs. This model offers the same recoil-absorbing characteristics as the larger caliber models, such as the soft rubber buttpad; this shotgun is extremely smooth. Also shipping with two 5-round magazines, this gun features a spare 3-round magazine stored in the buttstock. The gas piston operates in the same manner, cycling both standard and magnum loads reliably.

As with all ESCORT shotguns, the barrels are proof-tested at the factory to ensure quality and durability. Both models in the SDX series are oxidation-resistant with chrome-plated steel barrels. The hard chrome and Cerakote coatings look great and are built to withstand the harshest conditions. HatsanUSA offers a 5-year limited warranty with all ESCORT firearms.

Realtree, Santa Claus Ink Pro Staff Deal, Realtree Becomes Official Camo of Christmas

Columbus, Ga. –Today, Realtree formally announced a pro staff deal with Santa Claus, including terms to become the Official Camo of Christmas. Santa will be wearing a variety of suits this holiday season including ones in Realtree Edge, Timber, and the all-new MAX-7 pattern. As the holiday season approaches, Santa and his staff will be fielding requests from boys and girls across the globe, and demand for Realtree camo is expected to be at an all-time high. The exclusive partnership between Realtree and Santa lends itself to making this Christmas season a special one for the outdoor enthusiast.

Realtree Founder and CEO Bill Jordan noted, “We’ve been trying to think of a way to officially get Santa in our camp for some time now. Our group really enjoys this time of year, and seeing little ones light up around the Christmas season is hard to beat,” Jordan continued. “Santa and Realtree came to terms quickly, and the reality for our brand and his is that concealment is key. We believe this match make sense, will be fun, and keeps us both at the top of our game.”

In addition to wearing Realtree, Santa will have direct access to hundreds of Realtree licensed brands that are certain to meet demand this holiday season. Spartan trail cameras, Crocs, ArcticShield parkas and bibs, Ridge Wallets, and Groove Life rings and belts are just a few of the holiday items on many wish lists this Christmas season. Early design concepts are in development for an exclusive Realtree wrap on Santa’s sleigh in addition to camo-accented accessories for the reindeer. Santa is expected to be seen in an assortment of Realtree’s holiday ad campaigns this year. Additionally, Santa will be on site at Realtree’s headquarters in Columbus, Georgia, December 9, 2022, when Realtree will be serving lunch to every Muscogee County first responder.

When asked for comment, Santa said, “Look, what Bill Jordan may not realize is I’ve been a Realtree guy since Day 1. NORAD started tracking my movement back in 1955, and so it’s critical that I stay hidden. Back in 1986, the game changed for me when I started wearing Realtree, and I’m excited to have my official suit now carry the Realtree pattern.”

Claus continued, “The photorealistic nature of each pattern is best-in-class; I love their Timber2Table recipes, and having access to world-class brands with the Realtree camo makes being on the ‘good list’ that much better this year for boys and girls everywhere.”

Wild Turkey Conservation Aids in Delisting of Endangered Tortoise

From increasing opportunities to go afield to making forests safe against catastrophic wildfires, the NWTF’s conservation work has far-reaching impacts that benefit overall ecological value. The delisting of the gopher tortoise in much of its historic range is a recent demonstration.

Just as wild turkeys benefit from active forest management, so does the Southeast’s celebrated burrowing turtle, Gopherus polyphemus.

The keystone species was listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1987 as a threatened species in the western portion of its range, namely from Alabama to Louisiana. Since its initial listing over three decades ago, the species has undergone various levels of listing, which eventually encompassed the entire Southeast.

However, through the efforts of private landowners, state and federal agencies and conservation partners, the species has been delisted as threatened in the eastern half of its range, including in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and most of Alabama. The turtle will retain its status as threatened in western Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The announcement was made in October by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The NWTF’s role in helping the gopher tortoise is a result of the organization’s longleaf pine conservation efforts.

CMP Announces Retirement of Three Prominent Board Members

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) would like to announce the retirement of three long-time Board members: Judith Legerski (Chairman), Jon Bengtson (Treasurer) and Harry Sieben (Secretary). Each played a significant role in the foundation of the CMP as a renowned organization while also serving their country through charity work and public positions. The CMP would like to thank each for their years of vital contributions to marksmanship and wish them the best in their retirements.

Judith Legerski:

Judith Legerski was appointed to the original CMP Board of Directors by the Secretary of the Army in 1996 when the company was privatized by Congress. Holding several positions during her tenure, she was voted Chairman in October 2011 and served in this role until her retirement in September 2022. Outside of the CMP, Legerski held several important offices, including serving as a member of the Department of Defense Advisory Committee for Women in the Services and in support of the Secretary of the Army as a Civilian Aide for 28 years – now holding the title of Civilian Aide Emeritus. In addition to all this, Legerski remained active in a number of community and state efforts.

Legerski shepherded the company from its inception, providing leadership during a period of sustained and dramatic growth. In additional to establishing many of today’s existing programs, she has always been a strong advocate for youth marksmanship and can be credited with CMP’s Junior Air Rifle Camps success and prestige. Judy has a true love for marksmanship and has been known to target shoot in Wyoming alongside her husband of 56 years, Don. The couple share three children and six grandchildren.

In Spring 2023, the South CMP Competition Center in Alabama will be formally dedicated as the Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center to memorialize her contributions to youth marksmanship.

Gamakatsu hits all the points on what goes into a practical, purpose-driven set of fillet knives for the novice or professional.

Anglers have the option to choose from four-different knives based on their needs. The GMKT6F has a 6-inch long blade and is ideal for small to medium sized fish. The film provides a glimpse into the lives of the young men and women from the SST Ravens during their state tournament competition. More importantly, it captures the positive messages of the shooting sports. It’s time spent with friends and family, and it’s an exciting competitive environment with highly talented athletes.

“The shooting sports have taught me how to trust my instincts and focus on what I can control, like my breathing and the current target,” remarked Kamea Herrera, member of the SST Ravens. “Everyone on our team helps and encourages each other, including our parents and coaches. It’s cool to go to the shooting range with my dad and brother. I have been fortunate to meet so many people who share their love for the shooting sports while also improving my skills.”
