Vortex Optics selected by U.S. Army to produce Next Generation Squad Weapons – Fire Control

BARNEVELD, Wis. – American, family-owned Vortex Optics was selected by the U.S. Army to produce and deliver up to 250,000 Next Generation Squad Weapons – Fire Control (NGSW-FC) systems over a 10-year production period, beginning in 2022.

The Vortex Optics NGSW-FC, dubbed the XM157, was designed and built with the needs of the current and future warfighter in mind. The XM157 – invented, designed and engineered entirely in-house at Vortex® Headquarters – is a Low Powered Variable Optic (LPVO) with a display overlay, Laser Rangefinder (LRF), ballistic solver, environmental sensors, aiming lasers, digital compass, and wireless communication to provide for seamless connectivity on the battlefield.

The XM157 is built around a 1-8×30 LPVO featuring a glass-etched reticle on lenses made entirely in the U.S. The XM157 weighs less than many traditional LPVOs with current weapon mounted LRFs and associated mounts and enables America’s servicemen and women to engage threats quickly and effectively.

With an integrated picatinny base that houses the Vortex® Active Reticle® system, the XM157 injects a digitally displayed image into the first focal plane of the optic and allows for intuitive displays to support ballistic drops, reticle shapes and sizes, and additional modes to display way points, identified threats, and fields of fire.

To account for a rapidly evolving battlefield and a broad range of climates and weather conditions, the optic withstood rigorous drop-testing, extreme hot and cold environments, immersion testing, and tens of thousands of rounds of live-fire testing.

EASTON’S 100-YEAR HISTORY SHOWS IN NEW TRAD ARROW

Traditional shooters will want to check out the Easton Carbon Legacy.  The new Legacy builds on Easton’s 100-year tradition of making the world’s finest archery tackle.  When Doug Easton first began his archery company in 1922, he started out making handcrafted wood arrows and longbows one at a time in his small workshop. The Legacy combines the traditional look of wood-grained carbon with high-visibility white-dipped and hand-feather-fletched craftsmanship to offer the finest vintage aesthetic. “We really wanted to make the Carbon Legacy something special,” stated Gary Cornum, Easton Marketing Director. “We went back into our archives and found some of Doug’s 1920’s arrows and borrowed ideas from his original wood shafts to inspire the look we were going for.”

Loaded with features the traditional enthusiast will value, the Legacy comes fletched with three 4” left wing helical feathers including a barred index feather with combinations of solid red, white, and bright yellow hen feathers. Retired NFL defensive end Joe Tafoya harvests his first Florida hog on the USA’s Brotherhood Outdoors.

“I’d never hunted a wild hog before,” he said, “much less hunted one behind a highly trained hound wearing a radio collar and a Kevlar vest.”

It has taken more than 20 years, but some states are learning that the so-called war on chronic wasting disease is not going to be won via knee-jerk reactions. And at least one state is changing its tune on how they deal with reports of sick deer. For years, states have been wasting precious resources […]

CMP’s Educational Junior Rifle Camps Return for Summer 2022

Each year, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) hosts a series of hands-on, highly informative camps for junior rifle athletes. Running from May to August, the CMP Junior Rifle Camps present opportunities for high-school age students to receive valuable lessons on intermediate and advanced marksmanship skills through various exercises and demonstrations.

The Junior Rifle Camps are designed to train young athletes on air rifle fundamentals and techniques, through group discussions and personal guidance from collegiate mentors on the firing line, and also include an arrangement of instructional smallbore camps – set to be held in Ohio and Massachusetts in July.

Participants at the Junior Camps are trained by current NCAA athletes on the range.

The camps are excellent tools in further developing each athlete’s strengths within the physical and mental aspects of the sport while also refining trouble areas that may need more attention. Students are able to apply the constructive lessons learned in camp to their own budding marksmanship careers, with many even moving on to college programs and beyond.

Don’t miss out on this fun and enlightening opportunity! Registration for the 2022 Summer Camps opens Monday, January 31. Classes fill quickly, so sign up early!

DU celebrates 85 years of conservation

Established in 1937, DU has conserved more than 15 million acres and counting

Saturday, Jan. 29, marks Ducks Unlimited’s (DU’s), the world’s largest wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization, 85th anniversary. In 2022, DU and more than a million of its supporters are celebrating the conservation of over 15 million acres and the people who make it possible.

In 1937, a small group of visionaries and community leaders set out to save North America’s waterfowl populations while celebrating the continent’s strong waterfowling heritage. Stressing the important role wetlands play across North America, DU committed to this mission at the height of the Great Depression and one of the worst droughts in history.

Fast forward eight and a half decades later, and DU has become the premiere organization promoting wetlands conservation. Its work has led to the conservation of more than 15 million acres, thanks to tireless support from generations of DU members, volunteers and partners who are part of the organization’s mission to conserve and restore wetlands and other vital habitats for North America’s waterfowl.

“Eighty-five years of wetlands and waterfowl conservation is something we are truly proud of,” said DU President Doug Schoenrock. “Our success story is a true Team DU effort. While 15 million acres conserved is a historic milestone, we will not stop working toward our vision of skies filled with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.”

PRIMARY ARMS® OPTICS OPENS PRE-ORDERS FOR NEW SLx® 3x MICRO MAGNIFIER WITH ACSS® PEGASUS™ RANGING RETICLE

HOUSTON, TEXAS – Primary Arms Optics has opened pre-orders for their new SLx 3x Micro Magnifier as well as the new Flip-to-Side magnifier mount. The standard SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is expected to ship in late January, while the ACSS Pegasus variant and SLx Flip-to-Side Mount are both expected in mid-February.

The SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is an exciting approach at optical magnifiers, combining high clarity 3x magnification with a miniaturized body and a built-in ranging reticle. This new optic is part of Primary Arms’ SLx line. SLx optics built Primary Arms Optics’ reputation for innovation, reliability, and value. All SLx optics undergo rigorous field-testing during development to best serve users in any environment.

Weighing only 5.3 oz, the SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is a miniaturized, lightweight magnifier that extends the effective range of a red dot sight or 1x prism scope. The SLx 3x Micro Magnifier features an innovative ‘micro-sized’ design that reduces its footprint compared to traditional magnifiers. This makes it ideal for close-quarters carbines, where agility, ergonomics, and handling speed are paramount.

The SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is also the first magnifier with an option for ACSS Pegasus, a specialized ranging tool designed specifically for optic magnifiers. While most magnifiers simply magnify the primary optic’s reticle, the ACSS Pegasus adds an auto ranging ladder to the system, allowing marksmen to range and engage their targets more effectively. The low-profile offset design integrates seamlessly with your optic’s existing reticle, and the intuitive layout makes it easy to derive precise range estimates in seconds.

“The SLx 3x Micro Magnifier is an evolution of the traditional optic magnifier, combining new compact optics technology with a built-in ACSS Pegasus ranging system,” says Stephen Morgan, Director of Product Marketing at Primary Arms Optics. “Combined, the SLx 3x Micro Magnifier and ACSS Pegasus offer unprecedented precision to supplement high-speed, close-quarters optics.”

Attracting some of the best professional and amateur tactical athletes nationwide, the Tactical Games have become a proving ground for the latest in cutting edge tactical gear. The games intense physical nature, including fitness challenges, obstacle courses and marksmanship tests, require efficient gear setups which prioritize firearm security, retention and accessibility, as well as comfort and light weight. All of which are pillars at the center of Blackhawk’s product designs.

“Blackhawk has been a trusted name within the military and law enforcement community for decades,” said Nick Thayer, Director of Marketing for Tactical Games. “Through their sponsorship of the Tactical Games, Blackhawk will now be able to showcase those same proven products and designs to a new audience of athletes who will see why the brand is a first choice for those seeking the very best, regardless of their profession.”

Blackhawk T-Series holsters with leg straps allow competitors to maintain proper holster position and security as they navigate unconventional obstacles. SCI Concludes its 50th Annual Convention

Safari Club International hosted its annual convention last week, celebrating 50 years of protecting the freedom to hunt. This record-breaking event, held at the Mandalay Convention Center in Las Vegas, was nothing short of tremendous success with more paid attendees than the past two shows combined!

More than 700 vendors from around the world gathered in the convention hall to provide attendees with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to book hunts in exotic locations, as well as areas close to home. The best companies from the outdoor industry brought their newest products, ranging from firearms and accessories to optics, ammunition, archery, gear, and other equipment. The convention-goers that were perhaps more interested in fur, jewelry, furnishings, and fine clothing enjoyed equally outstanding options to choose from.

Those drawn to educational, informative seminars were able to attend presentations that covered the full gauntlet of hunting, fishing, shooting, and outdoor adventure. Seminars on everything from How to Catch Giant Amazon Peacock Bass to Mentoring Youth in the Outdoors took place each day of the convention.

The day spent on the convention floor was followed by an evening banquet with live auctions, which raised over $15 million for SCI/F advocacy and conservation efforts! Attendees heard from top pro-hunting voices Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump Jr., and Edward Byers, and were entertained by Larry the Cable Guy, J. Alain Smith, and Craig Morgan—some of the hunting industry’s greatest champions. Attendees also witnessed the presentation of a variety of prestigious awards and heard from distinguished international guests such as the Honorable Tadeous Chifamba, Zimbabwean Ambassador to the EU, who received the International Legislator of the Year Award on behalf of Zimbabwe Minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu.

A special congratulations to all our award recipients. Especially our 2020 and 2021 Federal Legislators of the Year Senator Roger Marshall, and Representative Bruce Westerman and our Courage Under Fire Award recipient, Governor Kristi Noem.

Fathom Seafood Review

Quality seafood in Nebraska just does not exist unless you are willing to have it flown in. Thankfully, Fathom Seafood offers this opportunity to get quality Dungeness crab no matter where you live in the country. We were happy to receive a gift certificate to try out this great seafood this month, and I jumped at the chance.

Fathom only offers live Dungeness crab and Pacific Northwest live geoduck. Nothing else and nothing more. They make it convenient to order through their website and you will receive your order within 24 hours. No one else offers just these two great live products on the scale of Fathom Seafood. Last year they shipped 1.5 million pounds of Dungeness crab throughout North America. This is ocean-to-table at its finest. They sell to the best restaurants in the nation, but more importantly they can ship directly to your home.

Fathom’s mission is to provide access and education about live seafood in the United States. They have worked hard to create direct relationships with fishermen and docks along the West Coast to provide the best quality live seafood possible.

So we chose a date, we ordered our pair of Dungeness crab, and we waited. The next morning, Federal Express showed up with a package in a brown box, and we opened it up. The Styrofoam cooler is inside the box and it included a letter, a card and 2 live Dungeness crab along with a freezer pack or two. That night, we steamed them in a pot with some Old Bay Seasoning and just attacked those crabs. I love Old Bay with blue crabs, but it was perfect with the Dungeness crabs along with melted and drawn butter. A perfect meal for a date night without having to leave home.

Live crab in Nebraska in January is a tremendous treat and it can be a treat in whatever state you live at a surprisingly reasonable cost that doesn’t have to break the bank. It’s not going to be something that you eat weekly but a couple of times a year, it’s an outstanding gift to yourself. Fathom Seafood provides live seafood in 24 hours all across the continental United States, and it is fantastic.

How to set up a half-mile Deer hunt by J. Wayne Fear

10/26/10 – How much land does a deer hunter need to hunt deer? Western hunters require much-more land than eastern hunters, because often the deer are spread out, the land’s more open, and the habitat isn’t as thick in the West. But in the forests east of the Mississippi River and in many sections of the Midwest and the Northwest, hunters may not need more than a half-mile to hunt and will be much-more effective in those areas, if they learn how to set-up and hunt a specific half-mile.

Shrink the Amount of Woods and Water – A woodlot with 30,000 acres is too large a region to hunt. To decrease the size of your hunting area, determine where the deer will be, because of their normal seasonal and migratory patterns. Before hunting season, deer have a normal routine they follow to and from feeding and bedding areas. Prior to the season, search for deer in places that provide one of these two needs for the whitetail. During the rut, buck deer often will make scrapes and be in places where they can breed does. When heavy hunting pressure is present, deer generally will go to thick cover to avoid hunting pressure. Deer have preferred foods at certain times of the year that only are in season then. Depending on the time of year, you can assume where the deer should be and begin to narrow-down the sections of land where you look for deer by also studying the terrain. One terrain break that drastically shrinks the woods you have to hunt is a clear cut. My book, “How to Hunt Clear Cuts,” available at www.jwaynefearsbrand.com, will give you many-more ideas on shrinking the area you hunt.Use Pressure Points – The places with the most hunters often will have the fewest deer, while the areas with the least number of hunters will home the most deer. Understanding hunting pressure will help you decrease the amount of woods you have to search to try to find deer.Scout for the Magic Half-Mile – The magic half-mile is a place in the woods where big bucks should appear. But locating that half-mile is not an easy task. No shortcuts exist to learning what the magic half-mile is where you can take deer. You diligently must search for it.Have a Half-Mile to Hunt – If you’ve done a careful and efficient job of scouting, you should be able to see and take a deer within a half-mile. Set-up as many as four tree stands in that half-mile. Then no matter which way the wind’s blowing, you can go into that region and hunt. If you’ve scouted properly, you can hunt more confidently. If you thoroughly understand what the deer do in that one-half mile, and there’s a buck in that area, then your chances of success are 100-times greater than someone who stumbles around in the woods hoping a deer will appear. Know What the Magic Half-Mile Looks Like – Although the magic half-mile will look differently in various parts of the country and can be found in several types of terrain, magic half-miles have some similar characteristics. These five types of magic half-miles can be hunted during an entire season and often even for several years.A magic thicket – I once hunted a thicket in the middle of a river-bottom hardwood swamp that often flooded during hunting season for several years. This thicket was productive, because it was protected from hunters by water. The woods that flooded during the rainy season contained water oaks, white oaks, willow oaks and red oaks. The thicket was on high ground, which meant that even when the river rose, the deer had sanctuary. Inside the thicket were plentiful blackberries and greenbrier. The neck of a funnel – In a funnel, the woods narrow-down to a small neck – usually with woodlots on either end of the neck and some type of habitat break surrounding the woodlot. Discovering an area like this – if you don’t know what to look for – often can be difficult. Many times deer meander through a funnel without establishing well-used trails. However, sometimes deer on both ends of a funnel will move back and forth through a region to get from one part of the woods to the other. Generally a funnel area consistently will be productive for a long time, unless the terrain changes.A magic half-mile of food – Deer in many parts of the country have a preferred food they eat at different times of the year. Deer will come from many parts of the woods to feed on one of their favorite foods, when this food is in high demand and short supply.A magic saddle – A saddle is a low place in a mountain range that deer use to cross the mountains. Oftentimes if you can pinpoint a saddle in a mountain, it can become a magic 1/2-mile hunting spot and home deer throughout hunting seasons for many years to come.A honeymoon suite – In many sections of the country, deer often will make scrapes and meet does at the same places every year. If you discover one of these honeymoon half-miles where bucks historically have scraped, you may find a spot to harvest a buck every season for several years.

The magic half-mile is the very-best place in the woods where deer will concentrate or move through during hunting season and consistently will produce more deer each year than any other place in the woods. To learn more about deer and their habits, go to www.jwaynefearsbrand.com, and see my “Deer Hunter’s Pocket Reference” book.

ISOtunes Sport DEFY Slim Hearing Protection Review

The ISOtunes Sport DEFY Slim Hearing Protection offers electronic hearing protection with Bluetooth connectivity while still being able to have environmental awareness in all situations. ISOtunes has been in the hearing protection business since 2016, and the ISOtunes Sport line has been growing exponentially over the last couple of years. We gave these a hard test at Industry Day at the Range which is a part of the annual NSSF SHOT Show experience for vetted media and industry buyers.

Anytime you are on the range you want to be able to hear the conversations as well as all of the range instructions around you. This is especially important for me at an event like SHOT range day. I learn nothing about new products if I cannot hear the details about the guns which I am shooting. The wide variety of guns at this event is simply breathtaking. As well, we have calibers shooting from .22 to .50 caliber and from one shot to fully automatic depending on the range bay we are standing in. This kind of environment gives us the perfect opportunity to truly test the ISOtunes Sport DEFY Slim model.

I dropped these on my head coming out of the bus before my feet even hit the ground, and they never left my ears for the 8 hours we were shooting this year. Some years I have left this event a few hours early because I become worn out from the sound of shooting before I am worn out from the actual shooting. However, this year the use of the Defy Slim actually kept me on the range longer. I enjoyed full conversations with individuals all day long and never once felt like I needed to lift my hearing protection to have a conversation. This is exactly what I want in such a situation. The headset was comfortable and held on my ears, and they were easy to adjust to my head.

This unit has Bluetooth connectivity, offering the ability to add in a direct connection to your phone. You can take calls or listen to music while you are out on the range. At range day, I did not have this feature connected only because I prefer to turn my phone on airplane mode at this event in order to focus. I am not there to listen to music. I do however like this feature and I can see using this in a hunting situation. I also like that there is one control dial to turn on the unit and control the amount of ambient noise that is picked up in your headset and one to control the level of sound from your Bluetooth. This allows you to listen to music softly in the background while also listening to range instructions or listening out for deer coming in to your stand location. Brilliant thinking there. I also sometimes have issues with very high wind noise in some stands so having the ability to turn that down would be a welcome change in the stand.
