“The BruTrekker Bottle is a terrific addition to our line of drinkware for the outdoors,” said Jess Nepstad, CEO of Planetary Design, LLC, the company that owns BruTrek. “Its rugged construction will stand up to bumping around, its double-wall insulation will keep hot beverages hot and cold beverages cold, and with three sizes there’s sure to be one that fits your taste and your adventures, from your morning coffee on the way to the trail to water for the hike, an afternoon iced tea or a growler of beer to share with friends in camp. MidwayUSA Foundation Opens Coach Training and Range Development Grant Cycles

Columbia, MO – MidwayUSA Foundation continues to find more ways to change the future of youth shooting sports by funding additional opportunities like coach training and range development.  Cumulatively, there is $1 million available through these two grant programs.  The Coach Training Grant Program will accept applications through March 1, and Range Development applicants have until April 1 to apply.  Both of these programs are competitive cash grants and applicants must hold an endowment with MidwayUSA Foundation to be eligible.

MidwayUSA Foundation Executive Director, G. Scott Reynolds, talked about the importance of these programs.  “After a very successful inaugural year in 2021, it is exciting to again offer even more funds to train shooting coaches and improve shooting ranges and facilities across the country.  Each of these programs are meant to fulfill specific needs of the youth shooting sports industry.”

Applications will be accepted through March 1 for the Coach Training Grant Program.  The maximum grant payout is $5,000 and the funds will be paid in May.  The program has been expanded in 2022  to provide coaches with basic or advanced-level certifications. This can include skills training, shooting clinics, train-the-trainer, or other coach training. Teams or individuals interested in MidwayUSA Foundation’s Coach Training Grant Program should reach out to eligible organizations at their state, regional, or national level.  These organizations must hold an Agency or Donor Designated endowment with MidwayUSA Foundation.

Range Development grants are available to help existing shooting ranges make improvements or expansions to allow for more youth-oriented shooting activities.  This grant cycle runs February 1 to April 1, and cash grants will be awarded in June. Range Development grants will not exceed $75,000 or 50% of the proposed project budget. Requesting facilities must be a range utilized by a MidwayUSA Foundation endowment holder.  Team and agency endowment holders are encouraged to work with their respective shooting range(s) to identify needs and complete grant application requirements. For both programs, applicants must apply through MidwayUSA Foundation’s online application process.

G. Scott Reynolds continued, “These programs help put the infrastructure in place to provide qualified coaches and regulation ranges. We want all kids that desire to participate in youth shooting sports to have that opportunity, and we are thrilled that these grant programs will help ensure that happens!” Additional requirements can be found on MidwayUSA Foundation’s website.

Ontario Goes Online: Delta Waterfowl Led a Pushfor Web-based Hunter Education

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA — Ontario recently began offering online hunter education courses to the province’s prospective sportsmen and women.

“This is a massive change and I’m extremely grateful to the efforts of the Ontario provincial government,” said Jim Fisher, vice president of Canadian policy for Delta Waterfowl. “Years ago, we presented a summary of the country’s key barriers to hunting to Canadian wildlife directors. There are many barriers, yet Ontario’s hunter education requirements stood out as far and away the most onerous. Following the directors’ meeting, we brought this issue up directly with key government officials and stakeholder groups as a priority.”

Now, rather than traveling to a two-to-three-day, in-person course, students can participate at their leisure in an online version available through the Ontario Hunter Education Program website. At $60, the online course fee is also a savings of at least half off of the price of the traditional course.

“Think of potential waterfowlers with some level of interest in just giving hunting a try,” Fisher said. “Then they learn they need to spend $150 and two to three days of their lives away at a course? Who knows how many potential hunters balked at that?”

Removing barriers to entry for Canadian waterfowl hunters is critical, Fisher said, given a long-term decline in participation. Duck hunter numbers have dropped sharply since the 1970s throughout the country. Other key items Delta is promoting include eliminating Sunday hunting restrictions in eastern Canada, lowering the minimum hunting age to 10, and providing hunter apprentice licensing in all provinces, as is the case in British Columbia and Quebec.

Federal Ammunition Expands Its HammerDown Lineup: The Only Hunting Ammo Truly Optimized for Lever-Action Rifles

Federal Ammunition is proud to announce three new loads in the industry’s only ammunition product line truly designed for optimal cycling and overall performance from the time-tested, lever-action rifle platform. Federal successfully launched Its HammerDown line in 2020, and now the company is expanding that product line’s options to include the 45 Colt, 35 Remington and 444 Marlin cartridges.

“Our goal for HammerDown was to deliver enhanced performance in any lever-action rifle. HammerDown provides the velocity and terminal performance required to be an effective and ethical hunting round for big game,” said Federal Ammunition Centerfire Rifle Product Manager Eric Miller. “With the addition of the 45 Colt, 35 Remington and 444 Marlin options to our lineup, that performance is now available to a broader audience of hunters and shooters.”

The velocities of all-new HammerDown offerings are customized to produce superior ballistics and terminal performance through lever-action barrel lengths. The construction of the molecularly bonded soft point bullets has also been adjusted for the best accuracy and expansion at those velocities. The geometry of each round’s case, bullet and cartridge ensures flawless cycling through tubular magazine and typical lever-action feeding systems. HammerDown is now offered in .45 Colt, 35 Remington and 444 Marlin in addition to the original loadings of 30-30 Win., 357 Magnum, 327 Federal and 44 Rem. Magnum.

“One of the enhanced design features found in all HammerDown ammo is that we chamfered the front face of the case rim on all the nickel-plated cases. This removes any sharp edges to increase reliability of feeding,” continued Miller. “This feature essentially improves cycling in all lever-action feeding systems, such as side-gate loading and tubular magazines.”

Federal ammunition can be found at dealers nationwide or purchased online direct from Federal. For more information on all products from Federal or to shop online, visit www.federalpremium.com.

Senate ‘Good Samaritan’ Bill Would Facilitate Cleanup of Abandoned Mines

Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act was long requested by hunters and anglers invested in restoring important lands and waters

WASHINGTON – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers applauded legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate today that would facilitate the cleanup of abandoned hardrock mines.

Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Jim Risch (R-ID) introduced the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act, which would enable interested entities to propose cleanup projects of mining sites that impact public lands, waters and fish and wildlife resources without assuming liabilities. Original cosponsors of the bill include Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT), Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and John Barrasso (R-WY).

This legislation would authorize a pilot program that allows for a total of 15 permits to carry out Good Samaritan remediation projects on abandoned hardrock mine sites over the next seven years. Currently, only the EPA has the authority to treat discharged mine water from abandoned mine sites. Without these proposed permits, Good Samaritan entities wishing to clean up mining sites are permanently liable for the site and any remaining pollution. Granting these entities the opportunity to restore abandoned sites will help address remediation of many of the thousands of smaller abandoned mine sites that are not a priority for the EPA.

BHA President and CEO Land Tawney thanked the Senate members who led introduction of the bill, stressing that the legislation has broad support within the hunting and angling community:
