Nomad’s Leafy ¼ Zip Pullover and Pants Deliver the Ultimate in Lightweight Concealment

As every turkey hunter knows, a successful hunt is dependent largely upon stealthy movement and realistic concealment. Nomad’s Leafy ¼ Zip Pullover and Leafy Pants deliver the best of both of those features in a lightweight package that’s designed for run-and-gun turkey hunting.

The Leafy ¼ Zip Pullover and Pants feature Nomad’s 3D leafy fabric, which now features the ultra-realistic Mossy Oak Shadow Leaf® pattern printed on both sides of the fabric for superior concealment. In turn, the leafy fabric creates a deadly effective garment that makes hunters virtually invisible in the woods.

The ¼ zip pullover utilizes 4-way stretch construction that is ideal for putting the sneak on toms while allowing for maximum range of movement. Likewise, the pullover features wicking moisture management to help push moisture away when your body temperature and activity level reach peak form. Quick-drying and lightweight, the pullover can easily be stowed away in a pack and is incredibly breathable, making it a great option for warm spring weather and fast-paced action in the turkey woods. The pullover also features an adjustable hood and zip front for custom venting and total coverage, as well as a zip dump pouch for quick access to calls and other gear.

The pants also utilizes the 3D leafy fabric with printing on both sides for the most realistic camo. The 2-way stretch fabric is perfect for comfortably crawling or sneaking without giving away your position to wary toms. An Ever-Adjust waistband and button closure makes for a comfortable fit all day long, while cargo pockets conveniently store calls, tags, or cell phones with quick and easy access. Breathable and lightweight, the Leafy pants allow for optimal concealment without causing you to overheat on warm-weather hunts or when your pace increases. The Leafy Pants also feature Mossy Oak’s Shadow Leaf camo pattern.

The Best of Both Worlds: Hard Mast and Soft Mast with Chestnut Hill Outdoors

The general objective of food plots and mast orchards is to attract deer and other wildlife by improving the land. Within that, responsible land stewards often have more specific objectives. They understand the importance of sustainability and providing year-round nutrition. The more you provide, the more wildlife your land will attract; and the more variety, the longer they’ll stay. The result is more and healthier wildlife spending more time on your ground.

Food plots are one way to enhance the landscape, but they require a lot of work and have a limited window of availability. Mast orchards offer a great alternative or supplement that can significantly widen the window of attraction and, once established, continue to do so for the enjoyment of current and future generations of land stewards and the wildlife they sustain.

Providing a variety of both hard and soft mast further expands that window of attractiveness. It’s what the folks at Chestnut Hill Outdoors call Dirt Wisdom, and they offer a range of trees and shrubs selected to do just that.

Early summer is the season of growth for both plants and wildlife. Young wildlife is abundant, growing rapidly and in need of nutritious food. Early soft mast producers like plums and mulberries help them meet these needs.

Mid to late summer is an often unrecognized period of nutritional stress. Nutritional demands increase for rapidly-growing young wildlife and the adults that support them, but herbaceous vegetation is maturing and dying. Summer fruits like blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes help wildlife bridge this nutritional gap before the next one arrives.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Highlights Climate-Smart Benefits of Grasslands and Forests

Press conference launches USDA’s $1 billion Climate-Smart Grant Program for agriculture

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has announced a new program to support America’s climate-smart farmers, ranchers and forest landowners. The Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities will provide $1 billion for pilot projects that address commodity markets with carbon capturing solutions, oversight and evaluation of those methods, and marketing of the products.

“We were thrilled to hear grasslands and forests mentioned alongside other important solutions for climate, and we know from decades of experience that they’re also imperative for wildlife habitat, water quality, and soil health,” said Ron Leathers, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s Chief Conservation Officer. “Well managed woodlands and grasslands sequester carbon at an incredible rate and create the kind of climate-smart commodity Secretary Vilsack and USDA are trying to incentivize. We look forward to engaging in this conversation while helping farmers, ranchers, and corporate partners align profitability with ecological performance. This Partnership can benefit agricultural producers, end consumers, our wildlife habitat mission, and our supporters.”

Further, Secretary Vilsack highlighted the Conservation Reserve Program – CRP – as an example of a grassland creation mechanism already delivering multiple natural resource benefits, including carbon sequestration for climate resiliency. During his comments, the Secretary emphasized that this new effort is not an addition to CRP or any Farm Bill conservation program, but an entirely new effort to expand the climate benefits of healthy grasslands and forests.

“We have a wide array of conservation programs that can be tailored and targeted to climate smart practices,” Vilsack said. “We looked at CRP and asked how we can focus it on highly erodible land. How can we take it from historic low of around 20 million aces and build it back up? One of the strategies we focused on was grasslands, and the importance of providing incentives for grasslands to participate in this initiative.”

WildEar® by CavCom Will Help You Be More Successful in The Field

All predators – humans included – rely primarily on their stereoscopic vision as their primary source of information. A close second, however, is their hearing. The sound of a distant turkey gobbling or elk bugling helps us locate game. So does the telltale crunch of a deer walking on leaves, the clack of antlers during a fight or against a tree or the sudden flush of gamebirds. Those who can hear and identify those sounds, and hundreds of others, are at a distinct advantage in the woods. And the sad truth is that millions of hunters around the world cannot hear these, and many other, important sounds because their hearing has degraded over time. That’s why using a hearing enhancement device that also offers protection from the harsh sounds of gunfire from WildEar is so important.

As we age, there are some hard truths that become difficult to admit. For many of us, it’s hard to admit that our hearing isn’t what it used to be. According to the National Institute of Health (https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/statistics/quick-statistics-hearing), about one in eight Americans over the age of 12 years has hearing loss in both ears, based on standard hearing tests. That’s nearly 30 million people! Also, age is the strongest predictor of hearing loss among adults aged 20-69.

The WildEar Hunting & Shooting Product Series is built for the shooting sportsman. Whether in the field or at the range, WildEar products provide the most advanced technology in hearing protection and enhancement on the market. They protect your ears from extreme noise and gun blasts and provide hearing enhancement for safety and communication for those with or without hearing loss. “Our products are designed and built with the latest digital technologies, with the goal of resolving known problems in competitive design,” said Katie Macke, director of marketing. “Our line of products has advantages in ease-of-use, simplified controls, field adjustment, durability under harsh field conditions, and product quality. Special attention has also been given to achieving the absolute best fit in a custom product.”

So, this year, why not do yourself a favor and both improve your success in the field and protect your hearing with a hearing enhancement and protection device from WildEar? More information is available at https://www.wildear.com/ or by calling 855-494-WILD(9453).

About WildEar: Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Walker, Minn., WildEar is a wholly-owned subsidiary of CavCom, the leader in innovative industrial hearing protection and communication systems. WildEar designs and develops innovative electronic hearing products and protection for the avid outdoorsman, the weekend warrior, the swimmer, music lovers, cell phone users and those desiring comfortable, undisturbed sleep. North American hunter, Franklin D. Cean wins inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Award

After the rigorous judging of over 100 entries into the inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Award, 78-year-old hunter, Franklin D. Cean from New York state was presented with the trophy at a small, but well-attended event on the London gunmaker, John Rigby & Co.’s booth during the Dallas Safari Club Convention (DSC) 2022.

Frank, along with his Professional Hunter (PH) Buzz Charlton, of Charlton McCallum Safaris, Zimbabwe – a qualified PH for over 25 years – were each awarded Rigby Big Game rifles in .416 and .450 Rigby, respectively. As Buzz was unable to attend the event in person, the rifle was collected by the outfitting company’s co-owner, Myles McCallum.

After many weeks of deliberation by the esteemed judging panel – made up of renowned PH Robin Hurt, Dr Kevin ‘Doctari’ Robertson, author of “The Perfect Shot” and Marc Newton, managing director of Rigby – a scoring metric based on the perceived age of the bulls and hunt difficulty was used to determine the winner.

For the avoidance of any doubt, as Dr Kevin Robertson was on this specific hunt observing, his score was not included in the metrics and Rigby’s MD Marc Newton had casting vote. Frank’s bull achieved the highest score from all entries, being awarded 4.75 out of 5 for the age of the bull, which was estimated to be late 14-years-old.

Commenting on his win, Frank Cean said: “I was amazed that I was selected as the winner out of a very large group of entries. It was a real honour to win such a fantastic and worthy award, for which I’m very proud. I was notified about the competition by a friend, who suggested that I investigate further, so I worked on my presentation for a few weeks before submitting my entry to the Rigby team and meanwhile forgot about it, until I attended the DSC Convention and Rigby presentation event. I was totally not expecting to win, consequently I was very surprised when I was announced the winner. For me hunting dagga bulls is so important because you are simply removing those which are no longer able to breed and serving no real purpose to the herd, so this doesn’t result in a reduction of herd size and in turn helps the economy, as well as providing a great meat source for the local community.”

Federal’s New Punch Personal Defense Ammo In .44 S&W Special Brings New Life To A Classic Cartridge

Federal Ammunition is proud to announce an expansion of one of the most exciting lines of defensive loads to hit the market in years: Federal’s Punch ammo. Since its launch in 2020, Federal’s Punch has won several industry awards for its effectiveness and performance. New for 2022, a .44 S&W Special load has been added to the award-winning product line.

“We saw a need for a reliable, accurate, terminally effective option for the .44 S&W Special that doesn’t have to be the top scoring product in duty ammunition test procedures,” said Federal Handgun Ammunition Product Manager Chris Laack. “So, we looked at specifications from our Hydra-Shok Deep, HST and other bullet designs, and took what made sense for Punch. We modified the thickness of the jacket, skive depth, hollow point geometry and even differences in lead cores to build the recipe for Punch in .44 S&W Special.”

Federal Ammunition has been a leading producer of law enforcement ammunition for more than thirty years. Drawing on knowledge built over three decades, the company recently set out to develop a new self-defense load that would provide excellent overall performance in the .44 S&W Special chambering. This 180-grain jacketed hollow-point bullet provides a great option for common self-defense scenarios, such as an extra-heavy clothing test using ballistic gel. Punch is engineered to function equally well in both revolvers and carbines chambered for this classic cartridge.

“Shooters need a simple answer to the ‘What ammo do I need for self-defense’, question,” said Federal Handgun Ammunition Product Manager Chris Laack. “Things to consider such as function, reliable ignition, barrier performance, terminal performance, ballistics and other considerations are a lot to digest for most people. What some consumers really need to know is it will function in their gun, every time, and that it will be effective stopping a threat as quickly as possible. Punch’s .44 S&W Special is our easy answer for them.”

Most concealed carry permit holders are less concerned with factors such as barrier penetration through steel, plywood and auto glass. They are more concerned about choosing a bullet that is engineered from the ground-up to stop an attacker and work effectively in their chosen firearm. And, as the data shows, Punch bullets perform well in the tests that matter most to the average shooter. Federal has made Punch ammunition a natural choice for concealed carry.

Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab working with LDWF has detected the first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE—The Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (LADDL) in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) detected Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer at the Mississippi/Louisiana border. CWD had not been detected in deer in Louisiana as of February 1, 2022, though it has been detected in 26 states, including three states bordering Louisiana. On February 4, LADDL reported a confirmed CWD case in a deer from Louisiana to LDWF. The specimen for testing came from a hunter-harvested adult buck taken on private land in Tensas Parish. After initial testing by LADDL, the specimen was sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, which further confirmed the diagnosis.

LADDL received a grant of more than $380,000 entitled “Increase Capacity for Testing for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)” from the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) USDA Farm Bill for 2022. The purpose of this grant from NAHLN is to increase the CWD testing capacity in Louisiana. In the event CWD is detected in Louisiana, regional sampling rates will be dramatically expanded in an effort to determine prevalence of the disease in the affected area. Statewide CWD surveillance will increase as well. The NAHLN USDA Farm Bill funding will be used to expand LADDL’s immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing capabilities through automation and additional equipment for IHC staining to accommodate future CWD testing needs of LDWF.

CWD is an infectious, degenerative disease of cervids (deer). Animals infected with CWD do not display symptoms until the end stages of the disease and can transmit disease to other deer, making surveillance and testing for the disease in the population very important. In the 2019-2020 deer season, 173,000 Louisiana deer hunters harvested an estimated 171,000 white-tailed deer. In Louisiana, white-tailed deer herd health and disease surveillance are managed by the LDWF.

Although CWD has not been shown to be contagious to humans, the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization recommend against the human consumption of deer known to be infected with CWD. Also, it is recommended that people hunting in areas known to harbor CWD-infected deer have their deer tested for the disease prior to consuming the animals. LDWF will provide testing for hunter-harvested deer free of charge. Hunters desiring to have their harvested deer tested for CWD can contact local LDWF Field Offices to have their deer tested.

The LDWF and LADDL have a joint interest in diseases that affect white-tailed deer, including CWD. Samples are collected from hunter-harvested deer and target deer, including symptomatic deer and pen escapes. The samples are then sent to LADDL for testing. This current USDA Farm Bill grant will allow LADDL to upgrade its prior system for CWD-testing so that it can more than triple CWD surveillance testing capacity and efficiency in Louisiana.
