Catch the First Tigress-Tagged Dolphin in the West Marine CCA Florida STAR Competition and Win $10,000!

The West Marine Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida STAR Competition presented by Yamaha offers a unique combination of conservation, data collection and education, with more than enough prizes and scholarships to make it the can’t-miss fishing competition of the year. And the fortunate angler that catches the first Tigress-tagged dolphin in this year’s competition will win $10,000 cash!

Kick off for STAR begins May 28, and runs through to September 6, for over 100 days of exciting fun filled fishing action. No other fishing tournament in Florida can engage anglers of all ages and experience levels and even includes non-anglers who can participate and win simply by collecting trash and debris. This year’s family-friendly fishing experience offers nearly $500,000 in prizes with 17 divisions, including tagged, non-tagged, inshore and offshore species.

Tigress Outriggers & Gear is proud to be a sponsor of STAR, the largest fishing competition in Florida. The catch, photograph, and release format of the competition encourage anglers to protect and conserve fishery resources for future viability and availability for all recreational anglers. STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement for anglers to harvest or capture and transport fish and promotes the proper handling of all species in the competition.

Entry fees for the 2022 West Marine CCA Florida STAR competition are only $75 for adults and include a one-year membership in CCA, youth anglers can enter for free after becoming a CCA member for just $10. Most divisions have six winning places and are determined by a random drawing of all photo entries of fish on the Official STAR measuring device. Because it is not the biggest fish that wins, the unique format encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries for future generations. Whatever their age or skill level, competing anglers have their shot at prizes, including new boat, motor and trailer packages, cash, marine electronics, Yamaha motors, tackle, scholarships and much more.

STAR’s offshore signature division is the Tigress Outrigger & Gear Tagged Dolphin Division. The first angler to catch a 2022 confirmed tagged dolphin will win a $10,000 cash prize. Anglers must have a CCA membership AND be registered in STAR before hooking and landing a tagged dolphin to be eligible. The time and date of the catch must be submitted. A photo of tagged fish on an Official STAR measuring device, verification of tagged dolphin and results of a polygraph will determine the prize winner in the Tagged Dolphin Division. Only the first Tigress STAR Tagged dolphin recaptured by a registered STAR angler who is a CCA member during 2022 competition dates and certified by the STAR Committee will be eligible for the prize.

John Olin Inducted into Arkansas Waterfowler Hall of Fame

John Olin was recognized for his incredible lifetime of accomplishments through his recent induction into the Arkansas Waterfowler Hall of Fame. In a ceremony on Thursday, May 19, in Little Rock, Arkansas, members of Winchester accepted this posthumous award on his behalf.

John Merrill Olin (born 1892) was an engineer and successful industrialist throughout the early and mid-1900s who held more than 20 patents and built an ammunition and manufacturing empire including Winchester-Western Ammunition, Olin Brass, Olin Corporation, and much more. Olin personally improved many early ammunition manufacturing processes and developed progressive burning powders and harder shot for increased velocity, pattern density, and improved lethality on game animals, dramatically outperforming available ammunition at the time.

“We are very honored to accept this award that recognizes John Olin for his forward-thinking and significant contributions to the hunting and shooting sports industry,” said Matt Campbell, vice president of sales and marketing for Winchester Ammunition. “John Olin created a culture of innovation that still lives today through the Winchester brand.”

About John Olin

Olin not only produced guns and ammunition, but he also loved to use them in the field- hunting ducks in Stuttgart, Arkansas or near St. Louis, Missouri, and quail at his plantation in Georgia. A true visionary of his time, Olin recognized in the 1930s that in order for future generations to enjoy hunting as he did, something had to be done. With the help of his vast influence and personal wealth, he focused his attention on the problem of dwindling wildlife populations and degraded habitats and became one of America’s greatest unsung conservation heroes.

As Chairman of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) Committee on Restoration and Protection of Game, Olin hired an aspiring young ecologist named Aldo Leopold to complete a game survey of the North Central States. This monumental study was the first of its kind and led to a book titled Game Management and propelled Leopold, now recognized as “The Father of Wildlife Ecology”, into active work in the field of game management. Olin also formed the Winchester Conservation department, which was tasked with researching early conservation concepts and promoting them to newly formed state game agencies and conservation groups through published manuals and videos. Thanks in part to John Olin’s endorsement and financial support, a young conservation group named The Game Conservation Society grew in influence and eventually became Ducks Unlimited.

How To Prepare Your ATV for Hunting Season

As hunting season quickly approaches, it’s important to make sure your ATV is ready for the task. Whether you’re hitting the trails or trekking through the woods, there are a few things you can do to get your machine in prime condition. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to prepare your ATV for hunting season, so read on for tips and tricks!

ATV Maintenance

ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles, are a great way to explore the outdoors. However, like any vehicle, they require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. Here are some basic tips for ATV maintenance:

Thoroughly Clean Your ATV

Although having a dirty ATV seems normal for a hunter, giving your vehicle a thorough clean before your first trip is a great way to keep it running all season long. If you haven’t given your ATV a thorough clean before it may seem like a daunting task, but with a little know-how it can be easily accomplished.

The first step is to gather together the necessary supplies. These include soap, water, a hose, a sponge, and a soft brush. Once you have everything you need, you can begin the cleaning process. Start by rinsing off the ATV with clean water to remove any loose dirt and debris. Next, apply a generous amount of soap and use the sponge to scrub the vehicle from top to bottom. Be sure to pay special attention to areas that are prone to mud and grime build-up, such as the undercarriage and wheels.

Once you have thoroughly washed the ATV, rinse it off again with the hose. Finally, use the soft brush to remove any remaining dirt and give the vehicle a final once-over. With these simple steps, you can easily keep your ATV clean and in good condition.

Z-Man’s® Enduring Commitment to Conservation

Progressive tackle company hosts first-of-its-kind ‘Partner with a Payer’ event

Crafting high-grade fishing tackle remains a worthy endeavor only insomuch as the fish and their environs flourish. It’s a simple, self-evident idea that’s quietly inhabited the hearts and minds of the people behind Z-Man Fishing Products since day one. It’s also the motivation behind Z-Man’s support of the scientists who keep our fisheries brimming with aquatic life.

Upholding its continuing commitment to aquatic conservation, Z-Man Fishing Products recently played a principal role in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) efforts to bridge the gap between tackle manufacturers and fisheries management. In April, Z-Man hosted the first Partner with a Payer event within the recreational fishing industry, bringing together industry leaders from USFWS, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).

Kicking off the event, the team at Z-Man led fishery scientists and managers on a tour of its state-of-the-art Charleston, South Carolina based tackle manufacturing facility. The visit showcased Z-Man’s ongoing commitment to sustainable, conservation-oriented business practices, such as a newly installed solar array and the domestic manufacture of its non-toxic ElaZtech® softbaits. The event also included a field and fish hatchery tour guided by the SCDNR, demonstrating the success of the Wildlife & Sport Fish Restoration program in South Carolina.

Bridging the gap between related sportfishing groups, Partner with a Payer provides a platform for discussing impactful fisheries issues and opening a dialogue regarding fishing tackle excise taxes and how the dollars help fund conservation. According to the USFWS, America’s fishing equipment manufacturers have shared a partnership with state and federal biologists through the Dingell-Johnson Act since 1950.

Sanghera Claims Junior Air Pistol Match at 2022 Camp Perry Open

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Suman Sanghera, 16, of Great Falls, Virginia, was the leading junior air pistol athlete at the 2022 Camp Perry Open – held over the weekend of May 13-15. It was only her second time attending the annual event, but through her strategy of treating every match like a practice, she was able to stay focused solely on her process and remain, ultimately, ahead of her peers.

“Going into this one, I had just gotten out of finals week, so I wasn’t training as much every day,” she said of her time leading up to the Camp Perry Open. “I just had the expectation that I was going to go, shoot and I was going to learn something.”

The Camp Perry Open features three-position precision/sporter air rifle and smallbore matches as well as 60 shot air rifle and air pistol competition, split into Open and Junior categories. The event is hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) at the indoor Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center and the outdoor Petrarca Range – both located on the grounds of Camp Perry. Each event includes qualifying rounds, followed by an elimination final that determines overall winners.

Leading Junior Pistol athletes were (left to right) Remington Smith, Suman Sanghera and Bhavjeet Sanghera.

Suman was the front-runner of the pack after the qualification rounds but fell slightly after the start of the final. She surprised her fellow competitors by again rising to the top of the leaderboard – executing a series of excellent shots that kept her in the lead through the last shot of the match.

“I looked at my scoring monitor and saw I needed a sight adjustment, so once I made that and started shooting a couple of tens, I just knew what I was doing. I was in some sort of rhythm,” she said. “I just kept going with that.”

Proper Digestion is Important for Gun Dogs

By Eukanuba Staff

Strenuous exercise can challenge the digestive systems of hardworking sporting dogs. Their bodies endure mechanical stress from the vibrations caused by exercise, as well as physical stress associated with increased levels of cortisol. As a result, dogs can experience GI upset.

Fortunately, feeding your dog a diet that includes certain key nutrients can have a positive impact on their GI health. According to Russ Kelley at the Eukanuba™ Pet Health & Nutrition Center, “Nutrition that supports the GI system includes insoluble fibers, psyllium, prebiotics, and beet pulp. These ingredients help ensure that nutrients are absorbed by the dog’s body and can be used to help replace cells lost during activity.”

Fermentable fiber in the form of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and beet pulp plays a prebiotic role by stimulating the production of short-chain fatty acids which nourish the intestinal cells. And FOS also provide a prebiotic effect by stimulating beneficial bacteria. The addition of psyllium aids in the passage of stool.

Some diets contain solid ingredients that are precision-ground to make digestion easier. Finely-ground carbohydrates from corn meal, barley, and grain sorghum (a cereal) can be more efficiently absorbed by the digestive system. Foods that are easily digested help dogs optimize nutrient absorption.

Kibble size is another aspect that plays a larger role in digestion than most owners and handlers realize. Kibble that is small and perfectly round is easy for dogs to swallow without chewing. Without being chewed, the kibble isn’t ground by the teeth. Small kibble that is swallowed without being chewed allows many nutrients to pass through the small intestine without being absorbed.
