Home Security with the Defender Sentinel 4K NVR Security System

We chose the Sentinel 4K NVR Security System for our home security needs and after looking at all of the options, I knew we made the right choice. The options for home security systems seem to be endless, find out why I am happy we chose this system for our home. The clarity and options offered by the Defender Sentinel 4K Ultra Wired NVR Security System are more than enough for our home security and our needs.

When choosing a wired security system, I spent a lot of time on research to find the best system for our needs. This led me down some interesting roads. It has also prevented me from buying items that just don’t fit for our needs. Regarding a home security system, my research led me right to the Defender 4K Sentinel NVR Security System.

I knew that I wanted a wired home security system with at least four 4K Home Surveillance Cameras. I could have had more cameras, but it would have been overkill for our home. Defender sells this same Sentinel system with 8 cameras if you feel that you need more security camera coverage. Our home is just over 80 years old, so choosing the system upfront with a plan was important because we would have to install cameras on the brick. I wanted the wires hidden and secured so it could not be taken down.

DVR vs NVR vs Wireless Security

When looking at a security system you have basically three options out there on the market. Wireless, battery-operated cameras seem to be getting all the buzz these days. You install them and every other month you need to pull them down to charge them. The problem with these cameras is that extreme cold and extreme heat will deplete the batteries more quickly. As well, you have to use a ladder to get them down and reinstall them and while they are charging, they are not working.  What happens if you need your cameras while they are charging?

Researchers Spearhead New Study to Better Understand Diseases in Wild Turkeys

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The NWTF is helping fund a new wild turkey research project that will utilize state-of-the-art technologies to study diseases at a cellular level, informing the overall understanding of disease ecology and helping guide future wild turkey management.

Lymphoproliferative disease virus, or LPDV for short, is well-known amongst researchers and wildlife managers, as it is not uncommon for wild turkeys and various other land-dwelling birds to be infected. LPDV was first documented in a wild turkey in Arkansas in 2009 and has since been detected in wild turkeys in at least 29 states.

Some infected birds form tumors in their internal organs and skin and may exhibit many other side effects, like weakness and lethargy, while some infected birds display no noticeable clinical signs but experience more insidious effects, such as decreased immune system health. Though the disease can be detrimental to individual birds, less is known about its effect on a population level.

“Our primary objective is to determine where and to what extent LPDV is distributed throughout the body of infected wild turkeys, including comparison among turkeys that have no evident disease, those that have mild disease and those that have severe, fatal disease, such as those with multi-organ lymphoid tumors,” said Nicole Nemeth, D.V.M, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Georgia. “This will be accomplished through the adaptation of an existing, advanced diagnostic tool for LPDV and for a similar, tumor-causing virus that also circulates in wild turkeys, reticuloendotheliosis [REV] virus.”

The team will examine LPDV and other diseases within cells and tissues of wild turkeys and assess patterns of how the diseases spread and how they manifest in a variety of circumstances.

Meadow Restoration in South Dakota’s Black Hills

EDGEFIELD, S.C.—A new 636-acre habitat enhancement project in the Black Hills of South Dakota is currently in progress, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the NWTF, the USDA Forest Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Partners are working to bolster the area’s value for wildlife by removing encroaching trees, mainly small ponderosa pines and rocky mountain juniper. The end results will provide many benefits, including returning the area back to its historic vegetative structure, reducing the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire and making the landscape more productive for the critters that call it home.

The Black Hills National Forest encompasses 1.25 million acres in western South Dakota and extends into Wyoming. The area, considered sacred by Native American tribes, was named after the Lakota Sioux words “Paha Sapa,” meaning “hills that are black.”

The national forest is characterized by its predominate ponderosa pines, needle-like mountains and lowlands consisting of grasslands, where the NWTF and partners are working to enhance the native meadow habitats, important bugging areas for wild turkey poults.

Ponderosa pines nine inches in diameter or less and all sizes of Rocky Mountain Juniper are the primary targets for removal. Once the 636-acre parcel is selectively cleared, managers will conduct controlled burns to further reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and revitalize the meadow habitat.

The Best Five Rifles for Deer Hunting

There are countless reasons why you may want to go deer hunting this season. You may want to spend quality time with friends or family, enjoy a weekend in the outdoors by yourself, or hunt enough game to fill up your freezer with meat.

Regardless of your reasons for going on a hunt, you must ensure that you are using the proper equipment to achieve the results you desire. While you may have a great rifle safe at home, you also need to have quality guns and ammunition in that safe to take out when you are going hunting.

Regardless of your skill level and experience as a sharpshooter, you will have an extremely hard time aiming and firing at deer in the wild without the proper weapon. Below is a guide that outlines the best five rifles for deer hunting in 2022.

1. Remington 7600

A classic, the Remington 7600 is an outstanding choice if you are going hunting in the near future. The gun is very similar in its functionality to a shotgun, with the first shot extremely fast. It also carries extremely well in the hand, while it is not too heavy when you are lugging it around on a hunting trip.

These pump action guns are an excellent option if you are only going out to shoot deer. While you should not be aiming from a significant distance, even if you are hiding in the bushes waiting for a deer to emerge, there should be no accuracy issues with this gun.

MidwayUSA Foundation Joins With the First Hunt Foundation In Helping Save Our Hunting Heritage

All hunters want to think hunting will be around and available forever. However, the facts show that as early as ten years from now, many Fish and Game agencies which depend on license sales may find themselves short on funds.  The First Hunt Foundation which has one of the largest dedicated cadre of volunteer mentors and hunting coaches in the nation is working hard to insure our hunting heritage is alive and well decades into the Future.  Rick Brazell, President and Founder of the Foundation  says, “ We currently have over 800 volunteers scattered across 38 states willing to help any new hunter regardless of age learn the skills necessary to become a hunter and our goal is to have 1,000’s more mentors in the future.”

The NRA Hunters’ Leadership Forum has watched the First Hunt Foundation grow and wanted to help recommending the establishment of the “Hunting Heritage” endowment.  They awarded a challenge grant to the FHF and Vista Outdoor immediately stepped up with another $15,000 to help establish the first $50,000 for the endowment.

“The NRA Hunters’ Leadership Forum is happy to support the First Hunt Foundation,” said Peter Churchbourne, Director of the NRA Hunter’s Leadership Forum.  “Our missions align, and it is only natural that we partner to provide opportunities for new hunters to experience the empowerment and personal fulfilment of hunting. I want to thank the generous Hunters’ Leadership Forum donors for providing the funds that made this grant possible.”

“Having the funds to start the endowment was great,” says Brazell “but we also needed to figure the best course to manage and grow the funds  in perpetuity.  FHF can use 5 percent of the funds, each year so we needed to find the right institution to help it grow and become sustainable for the long run.  We approached several banks and national investment companies when I remembered we had a small endowment already housed with the MidwayUSA Foundation.”

Brazell reached out to Ashley Petersen and John Linquist of the MidwayUSA Foundation and they both were excited to help FHF restructure its current endowment and formally establish the national “Hunting Heritage Endowment.”  Everyone knows you have to learn to shoot before you go hunting and teaching that skill is one the mentors/coaches of First Hunt Foundation see as a basic duty.

Federal Ammunition Shooters Proudly Represented the U.S.A. at the IPRF World Championship

Federal Ammunition professional shooters Buck Holly and Greg Bell represented the United States as part of Team USA at the International Precision Rifle Federation (IPRF) World Championship. The event was held on August 6-12, 2022 in Bitche, France. There were 250 shooters from 26 countries who participated in the shoot.

The IPRF was established to create an internationally recognized precision rifle competition. Throughout the 6-day shoot, Team USA participated in a variety of precision shooting events taking first place in every division and category other than the Factory Division.

“I’ve always said that precision rifle competitions here in the United States feature the best all-around rifle shooters in the world. It’s great to see an opportunity for American shooters to prove themselves against the world,” said Jason Spradling, Federal’s Manager of Shooting Sports Promotions/Field Training. “It’s a huge honor to have two of our Team Federal shooters invited to represent Team USA.”

Along with Team USA’s overall success, Federal Shooters Holly and Bell placed high in their respective events individually. Immortalize the Hunt with the .338 Cartridge Space Pen

Early fall has a special appeal to hunters as they’ve been reevaluating their gear over the summer to be ready for that opening day of hunting season. Whether handheld bow and arrow, muzzleloaders, handguns, rifles, crossbows, or falconry, it’s always about having the right gear. Lists need to be made, and tags need to be filled out. Do it right from the start.

What seems like a typical box of cartridges is the packaging for the Fisher® .338 Cartridge Space Pen. The cap on this model is an actual .338 H mag shell like the type used with a .338 Lapua Magnum that serves as the housing, which holds a raw, brass bullet Space Pen. The 85% Copper and 15% Zinc raw brass composition makes this pen a copper alloy with antimicrobial properties, which the EPA registered in 2008. Each pen will have its original patina after use, making it more personalized, and each is packaged in a moonscape gift box.

Cartridge Space Pens are the perfect size to carry in your wallet, pocket, purse, car glove box, or organizer when in a closed position. At just over 4 inches in overall length, the cap slides on and off and contains Fisher’s patented PRF ink cartridge, allowing the writer to use the pen at any angle. It becomes a full-sized writing instrument once fully deployed; great for filling out a tag, even if a bit of dirt, mud, or blood soiled it. Like all Fisher Space Pens, this one also writes in freezing early morning temperatures, which many hunts start on, and is more reliable than regular pens out in the elements.

Open this hunting season with confidence, knowing you are prepared. Take a spare, or better yet, give one to a young up-and-comer. The .338 Cartridge Pen is the perfect gift for the outdoors and hunter enthusiasts!

Grilling the Perfect Burger Takes Technique – And the Right Spices

“I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today,” J. Willington Wimpy, a.k.a. Wimpy, famously told Popeye many times over, beginning in 1931. And why not? The hamburger has been America’s go-to summer grilling staple literally for more than a century. And nothing sends an average hamburger over the top faster and easier than adding one of six Gourmet Burger Seasonings from Hi Mountain Seasonings to kick it up a notch.

The Hi Mountain Seasonings’ Gourmet Burger Seasonings collection includes:

Hi Mountain Chipotle Burger Seasoning: The red Jalapeño chili pepper is transformed when smoked, creating the chipotle chili. The deep rich flavor of Hi Mountain Chipotle Burger Seasoning makes an ordinary burger burst with robust Western flavor.Hi Mountain Buffalo Wing Seasoning: Mixing this special blend into your burger creates an amazing flavor combination that will make you wonder where this seasoning has been all your life. Add Hi Mountain Bleu Cheese or Ranch Dressing for the full buffalo wing taste sensation in a burger!Fiesta Salsa Burger Seasoning: All the bright flavors of salsa united in a burger. Hi Mountain’s Fiesta Salsa Burger Seasoning is a fiesta of flavors for your taste buds!Hi Mountain Garlic Pepper Burger Seasoning: This gold standard is the perfect pairing of flavors. The simple, yet robust blend is the secret to succulent burgers that everyone craves.Hickory Burger Seasoning: Hickory is the most popular smoking wood today. Hi Mountain Hickory Burger Seasoning gives your burger that rich, full distinctive flavor without the smoke.Hi Mountain Zesty Western Burger Seasoning is hearty and bold-the way a burger should be. Add authentic Western flavor to your next cook-out with Zesty Western Burger Seasoning.

The All-American hamburger may be easy to grill but taking it to the next level requires some basic tips and techniques. According to legendary chef Bobby Flay, it’s best to use lean hamburger meat (or, if you really want to go to the next level, ground venison), with a ratio of 80 percent meat/20 percent fat. This mixture will both hold the meat together and keep it from drying out when grilling, as is the case when using leaner meat. Keep the meat refrigerated until it’s time to pat it into 6-8 oz. patties, then sprinkle your Hi Mountain Seasonings Gourmet Burger Seasoning of choice over the meat, gently folding it in, then pat it into patties that are one-inch larger in diameter than the bun, to account for shrinkage when grilling. When grilling, don’t press the burgers down! Doing so will drain all the juicy flavor right out. Add your cheese about a minute before the burgers are done, then let them rest a minute after they come off the grill. This allows time for the juices to redistribute throughout the burger, giving you a more flavorful experience.

Hi Mountain Seasonings is America’s leading provider of meat and fish seasonings; jerky, sausage, and Snackin’ Stick kits; dressings & dips; and much more. The company is in its 31st year of business, a testimony to both the high quality of its products, and its customer service. All Hi Mountain Seasonings’ Gourmet Burger Seasonings come in generous 6.7 oz. bottles, with a MSRP of $8.49. They also offer three Western Style Seasonings for burgers: Original Burger, Mesquite and Hickory Burger. They are available in  2.5 – 3.0 oz bottles for a suggested retail price of $4.99.  For more information on the entire line, plus free mouth-watering recipes and more, visit https://himtnjerky.com/

American Wildlife Conservation Partners Honor Johnny Morris; Issue Mid-Term Update During Summer Meeting

The American Wildlife Conservation Partners (AWCP), a consortium of 50 of the top hunting-conservation organizations and wildlife professional societies in the country, outlined policy priorities and recognized Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris during their summer meeting. The annual event was hosted last week at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri, and the partners honored Morris for his 50-year commitment to conservation through Bass Pro. In addition, the partners released a mid-term review of progress made on the recommendations from Wildlife for the 21st Century: Volume 6 (W21) with specific priorities that still need to be accomplished.

“We were happy that the American Wildlife Conservation Partners were able to recognize Johnny Morris for his invaluable support of conservation over the 50 years since he founded Bass Pro Shops,” said Tony A. Schoonen, chief executive officer of the Boone and Crockett Club and the current chair of AWCP. “Through John’s generosity, all of our organizations have been able to accomplish our conservation missions and help sustain our hunting heritage.”

Photo Left to Right: Johnny Morris, Jeanie Morris, Bob Ziehmer (Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Senior Director of Conservation), Tony Schoonen (Boone and Crockett Club CEO), Missouri Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe, and Sara Parker Pauley (Director, Missouri Department of Conservation).

The plaque presented to Morris and his wife, Jeanie, thanked “Johnny Morris, the Morris Family and Bass Pro Shops for their unwavering support of conservation for the past five decades, not only in North America but across the globe, along with their leadership on critical issues that impact American sportsmen and women and outdoor enthusiasts across our nation.”

“I proudly and humbly accept this honor on behalf of our entire team of passionate outfitters and our fellow sportsmen and women we are blessed to serve. Conservation lies at the heart of Bass Pro Shops. Over the past 50 years it has been a tremendous honor to stand alongside hunters and anglers across North America to support the work of our conservation partners—many of whom make up the AWCP,” said Johnny Morris. “Our shared honor lies in having the opportunity to stand alongside sportsmen and women to make the future brighter for the wild animals and wild places that give us all so much. Together we are making a positive difference for conservation and for the future of our sporting heritage.”

During the AWCP meeting, the partners also released a mid-term report outlining what has been accomplished from the priorities identified within the 2020 W21 report and highlighting what still needs to be accomplished. The document celebrates the conservation victories including passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the America’s Conservation Enhancement Act, and other legislation or administrative actions that have implemented key recommendations that were offered by the sportsmen’s community prior to the presidential election. It also outlines other priorities, including the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, finalizing a fix for the Cottonwood court decision that is hindering proactive forest management projects, the need to finalize legislation to improve research and management for chronic wasting disease, and more. This is the first time the groups have issued a mid-term report to provide direction for the second half of a presidential term.

Ol’ Man® Assassin Hang On Treestand and Speed Rail Ladder

There is no better time to take a mature buck than a first sit at a fresh stand location. Deer quickly avoid areas regularly contaminated with human scent. A dream deer may have been spotted from another stand location or patterned it with trail cameras and other tools. Now, the conditions are right, and it’s time to move in to set up the ambush.

Lightweight, compact and durable, the Ol’ Man® Assassin Hang On Treestand is the ideal platform to get this job done and securing the advantage when the hunting is up close. Bowhunters will love the Millennium-style ComfortMax seat, designed with a footrest for prolonged sitting while patiently waiting for an opportunity. The seat is easily and quietly folded up to allow extra room on the platform for standing or tricky angle shots.

The stand is designed for easy packing; it folds flat and sports integrated, adjustable backpack straps with a chain and footrest. With powder-coated, rugged steel construction, the Ol’ Man Assassin Hang-On is built to last through welded steel construction but still weighs in at a manageable 19 pounds.

The Assassin Speed Rail Ladder is hard to beat when pairing with any stand. Designed to work on the most difficult-shaped trees, the Speed Rail consists of three independent sections of the ladder, each of which can be strapped to a tree. There’s no metal-to-metal contact, so hunters can quietly move into their hunting spot without alerting game. Each ladder section has a total of 4 horizontal rungs between two vertical ladder rails, making it easy to set up, and it is made of tough powder-coated steel for long-lasting durability.

Like every Ol’ Man stand, the Assassin Hang On includes a 5-Point Full Body Safety Harness and instructional DVD. Hunt hard, hunt smart. Gain the advantage with the Ol’ Man Assassin Hang On Treestand, and make it even more dangerous by including the Assassin Speed Rail Ladder.

The Hunter Series From Swagger Bipods – Versatility For Every Type Of Hunter

–Every once in a while, a product redefines technology, making the customer look towards the future and forget about the past. The Swagger Bipods Hunter Series is one of those products. It has quickly gained the attention of hunters accustomed to traditional bipods that had to remain stationary to their guns. Typically, when using shooting sticks, the hunter would carry them separately. However, with The Hunter Series, it is the best of both worlds. It is a bipod in its function and does the job of shooting sticks in one design.

The Hunter Series from Swagger Bipods was designed with the hunter in mind. The Hunter Series provides extensive range and maneuverability whether the hunter is kneeling, sitting or lying in the prone position when shooting. Swagger’s Quick Adapt Technology allows the shooter to adapt to hunting challenges.

The Quick Adapt Technology allows the hunter to use the Situational Mode, which uses flexible spring-loaded legs to obtain a steady shot in any terrain, whether on the side of a slope, looking up a hillside, or adjusting from side to side while getting into a shooting position. Hunters can even bend the flexible bipods back into their side or legs to have a solid rest when needed.

The Hunter Series attaches directly to any firearm by attaching to a sling swivel or by Swagger’s other adapters such as a one-piece pic rail adapter, MLOK adapter, KEYMOD adapter, or the standard rifle adapter. With many different options, hunters have accessibility to a solid rest without carrying shooting sticks or a less functional bipod.

The Hunter Series provides stability for a variety of scenarios. The Hunters Series is the answer for the deer hunter, from freeing up hands for rattling antlers to the need for steadiness from shooting sticks when a buck crashes into the shooting range.
