Your alarm goes off, you step outside onto the frosty ground, feel the cool morning breeze on your face, and gaze up at the stars in the sky. The smell of fall is in the air, and you are gearing up to head out to your favorite deer stand. You start your trek into the woods, adrenaline pumping, surrounded by darkness and the sounds of animals in the distance. You tiptoe your way through the crunchy leaves, hoping not to bump anything, and FINALLY, you arrive at your stand. You climb the tree, get situated, knock an arrow, and sit in the peaceful silence of the woods, waiting for the sun to rise. You have been waiting for this moment all summer, and it’s finally here.  

Every fall, millions of people head out into the woods to chase whitetails. You sit around telling stories, laughing and joking about the one that got away. A lot of work is involved in hunting, and having the right tools for hanging deer stands, clearing trails, and processing your harvest will make things a little less stressful. Here are some tools that I have found helpful and recommend everyone have.

Folding Limb Saw

Trying to trim brush and clear shooting lanes with a dull, cheap saw is very frustrating and usually ends with me swearing and throwing it. However, I prefer to work smarter, not harder, so I recommend the Smith’s Folding Limb Saw. It has an aggressive tooth pattern and comes with a built-in tooth sharpener. Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument conserves valuable fish and wildlife habitat, historic military site

EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. – Valuable wildlife habitat in central Colorado will be permanently conserved following today’s designation of Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument by President Joe Biden. Encompassing more than 10,000 acres of critical winter range for elk as well as mule deer habitat, migration corridors and headwaters fisheries, the area also is home to a historic military site, Camp Hale, a World War II-era training ground.

A broad coalition of hunting and fishing groups, including Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, has long advocated for the area’s long-term conservation. BHA staff were present today in Colorado where the president announced his decision and commended the administration’s decision.

“Hunters and anglers in Colorado have been working with local communities for more than a decade to permanently conserve these public lands and waters and important fish and wildlife habitat,” said BHA Conservation Director John Gale, who was on hand for the president’s announcement. “We’re pleased with the administration’s decision to heed the call of millions of citizens and undertake foresighted action in support of these irreplaceable landscapes.

“The Antiquities Act is a crucial tool to conserve large landscapes, secure important fish and wildlife habitat and uphold hunting and angling opportunities,” Gale continued. “Since it was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, it’s been used by 17 presidents, both Republicans and Democrats, to ensure the long-term conservation of places important to hunters and anglers.”

Quail Forever is proud to announce the hiring of Ayden Carey to serve as regional field representative in southern Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. In his new role, he will provide support for volunteers in all three states, featuring 35 local chapters and more than 4,600 members. Carey will collaborate with volunteer chapters to improve public and private lands conservation efforts for quail and other wildlife.

“Ayden brings five years of dependable customer service and support to The Habitat Organization, and he’s eager to start helping chapters accomplish mission across his region,” said Jerry McDonald, Quail Forever’s field services manager. “As an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman, he’s eager to begin connecting with chapter leaders who share similar passions.”  

Quail Forever empowers county and local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent – the only national conservation organization that operates through this grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers can see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy. Carey will be responsible for helping chapters achieve these local conservation results, while also connecting them to Quail Forever on a national scale. Additionally, he’ll be charged with helping carry out Quail Forever’s Call of the Uplands national campaign, which will close its final chapter at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. in February 2023.

Carey grew up in St. Clair, Mo., and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in science economics in 2017. Before taking his new position, Carey was a sales operations lead at American Metals Supply. He’s an avid waterfowl and turkey hunter, as well as a crappie fisherman, and spends the fall months chasing birds with his black lab, Blue. 

“Starting out, the thing I’m looking forward to most is meeting all of the great chapter volunteers in my region,” Carey said. “I want them to know that I’m available and ready to help whenever they need it, and that our conservation successes will be built together.”

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking hunters to help slow the spread of invasive species while out in the field this hunting season.

Hunters are encouraged to check for unwanted hitchhikers on clothing and equipment. Seeds from invasive plants like garlic mustard, tansy and spotted knapweed can travel far distances in the mud on vehicles, trailers, ATVs, shoes and clothing.

Once introduced, these invasives establish quickly, outcompeting native plants and damaging valuable wildlife habitat.

Hunters can play an important part in slowing the spread of invasive plants by cleaning equipment before and after heading out to their favorite hunting spot this fall. Here are some ways to help:

Seneca-Cayuga Nation Artist Designed a Custom Strap to Complement New Limited Edition Binocular Colors

Nocs Provisions, maker of adventure-ready binoculars and accessories, has teamed up with Amelia Winger-Bearskin to create a limited edition binocular bundle with a strap design, inspired by the traditional patterns and beadwork of the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma, of which Amelia is an Enrolled Member. This Honor Native Land bundle is available exclusively at REI Co-op, in all stores nationwide and on REI.com.

This collaboration is part of the US Department of Arts and Culture: Honor Native Land nonprofit where Winger-Bearskin holds an instrumental role. Honor Native Land, the subject and theme of the collaboration, is an effort to bring awareness to the practice of observing and honoring Native land through acknowledgment and efforts to correct the stories and practices that erase Indigenous peoples’ history and culture.
