Campfire Skillet Breakfast

The Campfire Skillet Breakfast is a hearty and satisfying meal that's perfect for starting a day of outdoor adventure. This one-pan meal is easy to prepare over a campfire and is highly customizable based on your preferences and dietary needs. Here's a basic recipe to get you started:

  • Eggs: 4-6, depending on the number of servings needed.
  • Bacon or Sausage: 4-6 strips of bacon or sausage links.
  • Potatoes: 2-3 medium-sized, diced into small cubes.
  • Onions: 1 medium-sized, chopped.
  • Bell Peppers: 1-2, diced (you can use any color).
  • Cheese: Shredded cheddar or any cheese of your choice.
  • Salt and Pepper: To taste.
  • Optional Add-ins: Mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, or any other preferred vegetables.
  • Oil or Butter: For cooking.
  • Cast iron skillet or heavy-duty pan.
  • Spatula.
  • Campfire with a grill grate (or a portable camping stove).
  1. Prep the Campfire: Get your campfire going and stable enough to cook on. A grill grate over the fire is ideal for placing your skillet.
  2. Cook the Meat: Place the skillet over the campfire. Once hot, add the bacon or sausage. Cook until crispy or fully cooked, then remove and set aside. If using bacon, you might want to leave the bacon grease in the pan for extra flavor.
  3. Cook Potatoes: In the same skillet, add a bit more oil or butter if needed. Add the diced potatoes. Cook until they start to get soft and golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add Vegetables: Add the chopped onions and bell peppers (and any other vegetables you're using) to the skillet. Cook until they soften.
  5. Eggs and Cheese: Once the vegetables are cooked, make small wells in the skillet and crack the eggs into them. You can scramble them in a separate bowl beforehand or directly in the skillet. Alternatively, you can let the eggs cook sunny-side up.
  6. Add Cooked Meat: Chop the cooked bacon or sausage and add it back into the skillet.
  7. Season: Season everything with salt and pepper. Add any other desired spices.
  8. Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top and let it melt.
  9. Serve: Once the eggs are cooked to your liking and the cheese is melted, it's ready to serve.
  • Prep Ahead: To save time, you can pre-cut the vegetables and store them in a cooler.
  • Control the Heat: If the skillet gets too hot, move it to a cooler part of the grill or raise the grate, if possible.
  • Serving: This dish is best enjoyed hot, right from the skillet.
  • Variations: Feel free to modify ingredients according to taste and dietary preferences. This dish is very versatile.

Enjoy your Campfire Skillet Breakfast surrounded by nature – it's a fantastic way to start a day of camping!
