Olympians, National Athletes Top Events at CMP’s September Monthly Air Gun Matches

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) resumed its Monthly Matches Sept. 18, 2021, at both of its static locations in Anniston, Alabama, and Camp Perry, Ohio – the first fired since May. The indoor air gun event, offered several times throughout the year, features a lineup of air rifle and air pistol competitions for all ages and skill levels.

Over 200 entries were seen between the two venues in September that showcased some of the most talented athletes in the country today, including 2021 Tokyo Olympians like rifle/pistol athlete SGT Nick Mowrer (who made history this year), pistol competitor SSG Sandra Uptagrafft and even rifle silver medalist Lucas Kozeniesky.

SPC Tim Sherry topped the International air rifle category by just one-tenth of a point in Anniston.

Mowrer, 33, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the International Pistol Monthly Match at Camp Perry, with Uptagrafft, 50, of Phenix City, Alabama, finishing a close second. Kozeniesky, 26, of  Colorado Springs, earned second in the International Rifle Match at the location, as junior Emme Walrath, 15, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, bested his score by only tenths for the overall win.

Coming off of notable performances at the 2021 National Three-Position Air Rifle and National Smallbore Matches fired this summer, Walrath also claimed third in the 3×20 Precision Rifle Match at the Camp Perry Monthly Match, trailing National Junior Team members Bremen Butler, 16, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Katrina Demerle, 16, of Hamilton, Ohio, who respectively earned second and first.

SSG Sandra Uptagrafft earned second in air pistol at Camp Perry and represented Team USA in Tokyo this year.

Other national-level competitors like SPC Tim Sherry, 27, of Fort Benning, Georgia, were frontrunners of events – overtaking the International Rifle category in Anniston. Sherry, a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit, was the 2021 National Smallbore Prone 6400 Aggregate and Iron Sight Champion during Camp Perry National Matches in July.

Professional Angler Luke Clausen Details G. Loomis Spin Jig Rods

Versatile Powers and Actions Bring Oversized Bass to Hand

Washington native Luke Clausen is a member of an exclusive club, as one of only a handful of anglers to own Championship trophies from both the Forrest L. Wood Cup and the Bassmaster Classic. Clausen collected those two milestone wins within a two-year period, winning the FLW Cup title in 2004 and the Bassmaster Classic in 2006. That remarkable kick-start has evolved into one of the most successful tournament fishing careers to date: Clausen has racked up 32 Top 10 finishes and over $2.5 million in winnings. His story continues today on the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour.

Clausen relies on G. Loomis rods to put bass in the boat and trophies on the mantle. Backed by 40 years of innovation in the design and manufacture of premium fishing tools, G. Loomis rods enhance the natural abilities of every angler. Clausen values the versatile actions lengths, powers and actions of Spin Jig Rods (SJR), found within the G. Loomis ConquestNRX+GLXIMX-PRO, and GCX series of bass rods.

“G. Loomis Spin Jig Rods are the most versatile rods in each series, performing well with a wide range of techniques,” notes Clausen. “Spin Jig Rods really shine when using presentations that anglers fish through the middle of the water column. Under these circumstances, I reach for G. Loomis Spin Jig Rods because they have more traditional actions; Spin Jig Rods aren’t as fast as some of the other options in each G. Loomis rod series. They are exceptionally forgiving, with a slower, more parabolic response that allows me to load up on a fish and keep hooks buried tight.”

“Spin Jig Rods in the new G. Loomis NRX+ series are incredible fishing tools,” asserts Clausen. “One of my favorites is the NRX+ 782S SJR, which is a 6’6” rod with Medium power and Fast action. This is my go-to rod when fishing small swimbaits for smallmouth bass, which is an excellent way to cover water and get big bites anytime from the post-spawn period through the fall. I rig my swimbaits on ⅛ to ¼ ounce jigs and fish them across flats in 8 to 20 feet of water – especially if those flats have patches of grass or rock. When rigged this way, I spool a 2500-series Shimano Vanford with 20-pound-test braided line, which has a thin diameter that allows the bait to swim in the middle of the water column. I add a leader of 8-pound-test fluorocarbon to maintain a stealthy presentation at the lure and provide a measure of abrasion resistance around all of those smallmouth-attracting rocks.”

Byron South’s Top Tips for Managing Predators with Convergent

Anyone who acts as a steward of the land (be it public or private) bears the responsibility of managing the land and the animals which live there, with an end goal of striking a healthy balance between predator & prey species. This sort of balance is beneficial to both the predators and the prey, and hunters who may partake of nature’s bounty – and even rural & suburban homeowners.

Professional predator and hog hunter Byron South says hunting predator species such as coyotes have long-term benefits for them as well as the prey – with no risk of forever wiping them out.

“Any good conservation plan includes managing predator numbers,” says Byron. “When not managed, predators and prey species often go through a boom/bust cycle which is not healthy for either. Mother Nature can be brutal.

“For instance, when prey is abundant, the predators abound and reproduce more offspring. If left unchecked, this offspring can create an issue when they too begin reproducing. When this predator boom happens, it will often create a bust cycle for the prey species due to over-predation.

“When the prey species become depleted by an out-of-balance predator population, a bust cycle begins for the predator population. During this bust cycle, you will also see a rise in conflicts between predators and farm animals & family pets in rural neighborhoods and even in suburban home developments.”

All About Chestnuts

At some point, we’ve all wondered walk it would be like to go back in time and see the world as it once was before vast forests were hewn and the land carved up into roads and house lots and covered on concrete and steel. It would look quite different, but more so than you might think. The boundless forests of eastern North America hardly resembled even the most pristine remnants that persist in our national forests and parks.

Hiking along what would one day become the Appalachian Trail might seem quite strange and foreign. Mighty oaks that now dominate the landscape would be fewer and farther between. Scarcer still would be lone white pines, towering straight and tall, many stories high, waiting to perhaps to one day be felled and carried to the coast and carved into a ship’s mast. The dominant tree in the eastern hardwood forest was the American chestnut.

Before European settlers arrived and for a long time after, chestnuts were an important source of hard mast for deer, bear, turkeys and a host of other wildlife. After settlement, they became economically important, particularly to people of the southern Appalachians. Their mast was gathered by the bushel. Some was brought home, and the rest sold, all for human consumption. Their wood – lightweight, soft, easy to split, resistant to decay and warping or shrinking – was ideal for posts, poles, pilings, railroad ties and split-rail fences. Its straight grain also made it desirable for building log cabins, furniture and caskets. The leather industry used even the tannin extracted from its bark for tanning. Yet in the geologic blink of an eye, they would all be gone … almost all.

In the early 1900s, a blight was introduced into the United States, most likely from Asian chestnut trees imported as nursery stock. Over the next 30 years, it spread from Maine to Georgia, decimating an estimated 30 million acres of trees. By the Great Depression, the most common hardwood tree in eastern North America had been all but wiped out.

Like a germinating nut, hope springs eternal, and a few dedicated botanists held out hope that one day chestnuts might return to the eastern forest. One such individual was Dr. Robert T. Dunstan, a well-known plant breeder in Greensboro, N.C. A friend of Dunstan’s – James Carpentar, discovered a large living American chestnut in a grove of dead and dying trees in Ohio. Carpentar sent Dunstan some budwood, which he then grafted onto chestnut rootstock and cross-pollinated with specially selected Asian varieties. As the new stock gradually grew and bore fruit, Dunstan selected individuals with the best hybrid characteristics, crossing them back to both the American and Chinese parent trees until he developed a superior variety – the Dunstan Chestnut.

The Escort DF12 Modern Sporting Shotgun

A bold design loaded with smart features, the Escort DF12 stands out in an ever-growing world of modern shotguns. This auto-loader is a sporting enthusiast’s dream and is ideal for close-range hunting applications. Using the modern sporting rifle design and capitalizing on adaptable features, the DF12 reaches beyond its potential as a mere shotgun. Its 5-piece multi-choke system accommodates heavy slugs as well as it does light bird shot, making it a great all-around option for a wide variety of game.

With an overall weight of 8.9 lbs., this shotgun is manufactured from tough aircraft grade alloy. The upper and lower receivers are overbuilt with a robust construction that is meant to take a beating. The semi-automatic DF12 runs on a gas-powered system, similar to those found in traditional autoloading shotguns, but without the added bulk of a tube below the barrel.

This 12-gauge magazine fed shotgun is chambered in 3″ magnum and will cycle both 3″ and 2 ¾” loads without hesitation. The DF12 comes outfitted with an Escort standard oxidation-proof, chrome plated, drilled steel barrel. To ensure the utmost strength, each barrel is proof tested at the factory. A muzzle cover protects the barrel and locks the forend into place, adding to the robustness and modularity of this shotgun platform.

The DF12 makes field-stripping and cleaning a breeze. The upper and lower receivers are detachable, much like their modern sporting rifle brethren, allowing enthusiasts to feel at home with this shotgun.

Escort helps usher shotguns into the 21 st Century with amenities that make the DF12 a joy to shoot. A reversible bolt-cocking handle enables ambidextrous operation and ease of use for all shooters. Picatinny rails have been meticulously crafted into upper receiver forend, providing real estate for shooting accessories. An elevation adjustable cheek rest allows optimal sight alignment with both open sights and mounted optics.

Gamakatsu® DuraScent Baits Bring Durability and Extreme Scent to Saltwater Soft Plastics

Gamakatsu®, the longtime leader in hooks for everything from bluegills to blue marlin, has brought the company’s unique talents for innovation into the saltwater soft bait market with the introduction of DuraScent baits. Whatever saltwater species anglers are chasing, there’s a DuraScent offering tailor made for that purpose, with built-in features that outfish and outlast the competition.

All DuraScent baits are made in Japan to strict market standards which are reflected in both their hyper realism and their durability. DuraScent baits are extremely durable, lasting longer than traditional soft plastics which allows them to stand up to the toothiest fish in the ocean. Super-soft elastomer provides extreme flexibility, allowing DuraScent baits to be stretched out to six times their original length. That means more time fishing, and less time re-rigging. DuraScent baits also float, which allows for a myriad of effective rigging options, taking advantage of natural currents to tempt anglers’ prey.

DuraScent plastics are infused with an all-natural blend of fish-attracting scents including shrimp, crab, fish oil and squid. After extended use, the extreme scent in DuraScent baits can be “refreshed” with a good stretch or two. Made with a non-toxic formula that is free of plastisol and phthalates making them environmentally friendly.

No matter which saltwater species is targeted for the day, there’s a DuraScent plastic that’ll catch them better than anything else. When other soft plastics get overlooked, these get chewed. The offerings include:

U.S. LAWSHIELD® PRAISES CONNECTICUT CITIZENS DEFENSE LEAGUE ON IMPROVING PISTOL PERMIT DELAYS

Federal Lawsuit Success

U.S. LawShield®, industry leader and America’s largest provider of Legal Defense for Self Defense®  coverage and proud supporter of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL), praises the organization for its role in facilitating a timelier application process for Connecticut citizens to obtain firearm permits in the City of Bridgeport.

“U.S. LawShield stood in firm support of the CCDL when they took the City of Bridgeport to federal court for violating the Second Amendment rights of its citizens,” said P.J. Hermosa, CEO of U.S. LawShield. “When bureaucrats attempt to infringe on people’s right to self-defense, it is time for action. We proudly offer our assistance to organizations like the CCDL when it comes to preserving the constitutional rights of people burdened with barriers such as those happening in Connecticut.”

In August, the CCDL filed a federal civil lawsuit against the City of Bridgeport (and others) for illegally delaying city residents’ applications for municipal firearm permits. That application is only the first step in the lengthy process of obtaining a state-issued pistol permit. Since the legal action occurred, the City of Bridgeport has reformed its practices to allow applicants a much faster process.

According to CCDL President Holly Sullivan, “Imagine the stress of waiting numerous months or even years to apply for your firearm permit. Law-abiding citizens should not have to suffer or forgo their right to bear arms because of unwarranted delays. Rest assured, the CCDL will keep an eye on how long the City of Bridgeport takes to process those applications and will act again if required,” she added.

NWTF Bringing Your Stories to 50th Anniversary Book

EDGEFIELD, S.C.—The National Wild Turkey Federation has partnered with Publishing Concepts, Inc. to bring our 50th anniversary alive with your stories.

A story is defined as being an account of past events in someone’s life or in the evolution of something. There are great stories out there ? some of unbelievable triumph in the face of adversity, others of unthinkable heartbreak and still some that motivate us to be better humans.

The story of the NWTF is like no other, and as our 50th anniversary draws closer, we want to share it with others. Founded in 1973, the NWTF was by all standards, a small start-up conservation organization. In just under 50 years, look where we are today: One of the most well-respected and effective conservation organizations in the United States. Our mission, to conserve the wild turkey and to preserve our hunting heritage, has been the guiding light all these years.

In our past, there have been great leaders, visionary researchers and dedicated partners. But there has also been one part of the organization that has truly led our efforts: you, our members.

Each of us has a story and we are excited to hear yours. We are looking for stories of conservation work, mentoring the next generation of hunters, how/when you first became a hunter, what drew you to the NWTF, hunting traditions you and your hunting family share, stories of friendships made through the NWTF and any other story you would like to share with us. Finding those snapshots in time that depict who you are and the work you have done over the past five decades is important to our history.

N8 Tactical Announces Xecutive IWB Holster

SPRINGFIELD, MO – N8 Tactical, an innovative holster company with a mission to provide quality products with superior comfort for all day, everyday carry, is pleased to announce availability of the all-new  Xecutive IWB holster.

The N8 Tactical design team developed the Xecutive holster to meet the increasingly sophisticated demands of serious EDC practitioners and the firearm configurations they deploy for personal defense. Given the increased use of micro red dot sighting systems with co-witness or suppressor-height open sights as well as the need for multiple options depending on changing apparel needs and carry scenarios, user-customization and maximum compatibility were key design goals of the Xecutive holster.

Built around a firearm-specific, single-piece Kydex molded pocket, the Xecutive holster features an optic-compatible cut and generously proportioned sight channel along the spine to accommodate most red dot optics and elevated front open sights to ensure smooth drawing and reholstering. The Xecutive can also be used for handguns without optics and those sporting standard-height open sights, making the holster “scalable” for custom firearm configurations.

Continuing the user-customizable theme are tension adjustment and clip style and location options. While the holster pocket is precisely molded for positive firearm retention, dual Chicago screws and rubber pillars allow the user to easily increase or decrease holster tension on the handgun to achieve the optimal balance of security and draw effort.

The Xecutive holster is configured for independent adjustment of cant and height. Simply remove the clip attaching hardware and the clip can be pivoted fore, aft, or level to achieve the desired cant, or the clip can be raised or lowered to achieve a “high ride” or a “deep concealment” position inside the waistband. The Xecutive accommodates both appendix and strong side carry.

SPYPOINT APP NOW INCLUDES MAP AND WEATHER FUNCTIONS

SPYPOINT, the cellular trail camera leader, announces today the integrations of maps and weather to its mobile app.

“The addition of maps and weather puts your entire hunt in the palm of your hand. We already had the best multi-camera management app for hunters. An easy-to-use interface to manage all their cameras and photos. What we have given them now is a complete hunting and scouting tool,” was the comment from Justin Lanclos, Chief Product Owner at SPYPOINT.

He continued, “maps and weather are the next evolution of all that SPYPOINT can do, and we’re excited to see how our customers put those features to use in the field.”

With the mapping function, GPS-enabled SPYPOINT cameras are automatically dropped into the user’s map. SPYPOINT users are also able to manually drop a SPYPOINT camera pin and select a camera from their camera list. When the camera marker is tapped on the map, information from the cameras tab is visible without navigating away from the maps tab. That means the status, photos, plans, and settings for that camera are also available without leaving the maps tab.

Camera markers for non-SPYPOINT camera are an option as well, but will not have the same level of information sharing that a SPYPOINT camera would.

Grant Kunkel finished fifth overall and second in the PCC division. Tim Herron won first place the Single Stack division. Cory Klemashevich finished sixth in the PCC division. All of these shooters use 9mm Syntech Action Pistol (AE9SJAP1).

Real Avid Introduces the Master Gun Vise™

Real Avid, the leader in DIY for Guns®, launches the new foundation for Gun DIY®. The first real bench vise made exclusively for guns and gun tools. Whether you’re building and customizing, repairing and cleaning or mounting scopes and accessories, this vise improves every part of the GUN DIY® experience. Quickly reposition your gun to any orientation without ever removing it from the vise. Insert the Torq-Lok pin for applying heavy force. Use the removable and reversible Gun-Fit jaw sleeves for a specific gun grip or turn the leveling knob for simple scope mounting and leveling. Build. Customize. Repair. Mount. Clean.

Work the way you want to work! The base of the vise features an articulating ball and socket joint with the adjustable Speed-Cam Lever that applies pressure to the joint allowing the vise and gun to be positioned and repositioned in any orientation the user desires. Although the amount of adjustable compression applied with the Speed-Cam to the ball and socket joint is substantial, an additional element has been added to the vise called the Torq-Lok pin for heavy toque applications. This removable pin intersects the ball and socket joint locking it into the base. The locking pin can be inserted every 90 degrees with the vise in either the vertical or horizontal position and stored in the base when not in use.

“We did a soft launch on this product a couple weeks ago and were amazed at the vast number of military, gun manufacturers and law enforcement agencies that were jumping to get this new vise. These are people who work on and build guns for a living and the benefits were apparent to them immediately. That really confirmed for us we had created something revolutionary,” commented Chris Witte, Director of Marketing.

As Tom McHale writes in the upcoming Nov/Dec edition of American Handgunner, “I use this setup more than anything as an extra pair of hands…the Real Avid Master Gun Vise is, bar none, the handiest tool on my bench. It’s great for cleaning, repairing, tinkering, installing, inspecting, assembling and disassembling. Heck, you can even use it to mount optics with the precision leveling knob.”

Another truly unique feature built into this vise is the Accu-Level leveling knob. This allows the vise to be tilted 3 degrees to either side for making micro adjustments when leveling guns for optics mounting without ever having to remove or reposition the firearm.
