LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters from around the country will take to the fields this Saturday for Nebraska’s pheasant, quail and partridge season opener.

According to surveys, the Southwest and Panhandle regions should offer the best pheasant hunting opportunities again this fall. Pheasant counts during this year’s July Rural Mail Carrier Survey were down compared to 2020, but field reports suggest dry conditions likely inhibited roadside observations in some areas.

“This is always an exciting time of year and we hope that many hunters get a chance to experience our state’s diverse upland bird hunting opportunities this season,” said John Laux, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission upland program manager.

Nebraska’s quail populations were affected negatively by severe weather this past winter and counts were down slightly according to this year’s Spring Whistle Count Survey. Nesting and brood-rearing conditions were favorable throughout much of south-central and southeastern Nebraska, which makes up the state’s core bobwhite range. Quail numbers are expected to be similar to last year across southern Nebraska and relatively lower elsewhere in the state.

Veterans participate in Maine Moose hunt

four Skills4Life heroes were invited to hunt moose in Maine. Maine issued nearly 20 tag permits to out-of-state veterans. Military Warriors Support Foundation Skills4Life program was able to procure four tags for our Heroes. The goal of this hunt was to conserve the population and cull moose, which are contributing to the loss of broccoli crops.

The Maine Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunt provides tags, guides and equipment for the hunters. Each guide is specially trained for conservation, and all Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunts were held on properties being farmed by Smith Farms.

Our Skills4Life veterans were able to tag one bull and three bulls. The largest bull measured 50 ¾”! Some of the guides and local game wardens appeared on the tv show Northwood’s Law which made for some exciting evening stories. Each Hero was sent home with up to 100 lbs. of meat in their luggage to share with their friends and families. MWSF is grateful to Maine and all those involved for making this a highly successful hunt for our veterans.

Hero of Kumaon is a brand new biography by author Duff Hart-Davis, that takes readers on a journey through the fascinating life and adventures of one of Rigby’s most famous customers – legendary man-eating tiger hunter and conservationist, Jim Corbett.

Signed by the author and in its first edition, the book threads together the life of this very private, unassuming Indian railway employee. Often using Jim’s own thrilling narrative, Duff sets out the highlights of Jim’s adventures in sequence and in context, thus throwing light on an extraordinary character. The book makes mention of Rigby’s acquirement of Jim Corbett’s famous .275 and the subsequent tour of Kumaon, managing director Marc Newton took the rifle on. 

In researching this book, biographer and journalist Hart-Davis travelled to Uttarakhand on several occasions, visiting the Corbett Tiger Reserve and many of the places Jim Corbett, his boyhood hero, would have known.

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) alongside neighboring state and federal agencies are conducting an intensive invasive carp removal effort in Pool 8 of the Mississippi River near La Crosse Oct. 25-29.

The Wisconsin DNR is working with the Minnesota DNR, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) using the innovative Modified Unified Method (MUM). This is the second time MUM has been used in Wisconsin or Minnesota waters. Thirty-four silver carp were captured in Pool 8 (La Crosse and Vernon Co.) during the first interagency carp removal operation in April.

There will be no impacts to commercial or recreational boat traffic on the main channel of the Mississippi River.

Developed by the USGS, the MUM method uses block nets to create compartments or “cells.” The USGS then uses electrofishing boats and boats outfitted with underwater speakers to herd carp from each cell. When a cell is cleared, another net is used to close the cell and prevent the fish from returning.

This process is repeated one cell at a time, gradually reducing the area available to the carp and concentrating the fish into a harvest removal area. A large commercial seine net will then be used to draw out the congregated fish. Native fish do not seem to respond in the same way as the invasive carp, preferring to hide, rather than run, from the sound stimulus.

Under Peterson’s Nearly 15 years of leadership, boating and fishing industries reached high-water marks through extensive recruitment, retention and reactivation efforts

The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) President and CEO Frank Peterson announced he will step down as President and CEO on December 31, 2021, and will retire on February 28, 2022. Peterson’s retirement comes as RBFF continues its mission to increase participation in recreational boating and fishing, thereby helping to conserve and restore aquatic natural resources throughout the U.S.

Since joining RBFF as President and CEO in 2007, Peterson has been instrumental in leading the fishing and boating industries toward record engagement levels through innovative recruitment campaigns along with retention and reactivation efforts at the national- and state levels  

In 2020, an impressive 55 million Americans fished at least once, the highest number recorded since participation tracking began in 2007. Likewise, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)—which represents the North American recreational boat, engine and marine accessory manufacturers—reported more than 310,000 new powerboats were sold in 2020, meeting levels the recreational boating industry had not achieved since before the Great Recession in 2008. Both industries have continued to report strong engagement levels throughout 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain obstacles.

“Outdoor activities like fishing and boating enhance the quality of life for tens of millions of Americans like few things can, and that’s why RBFF is so deeply committed to increasing participation in the activities which help conserve our most beloved waterways for future generations to enjoy,” Peterson said. “Working alongside the RBFF team to help guide the record growth of fishing and boating the past 15 years has been the highlight of my career, both as a professional and outdoorsman.”  

New bill would expand authorities for federal agencies to slow the spread of aquatic invasive species

Yesterday, Reps. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) and Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) introduced H.R. 5692, the “Stop the Spread of Invasive Mussels Act,” which would help address the growing spread of aquatic invasive species that negatively impact fisheries resources and recreational fishing opportunities.

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) supports the introduction of the bipartisan bill, commending the inclusion of provisions ensuring best management practices for inspection stations across federal agencies.

The bill would ensure that federal land management agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, have the legal authority to conduct boat inspections and decontaminations on federal land. In addition, it would establish a new U.S. Bureau of Reclamation grant program for inspection stations at federally managed reservoirs.

Invasive mussels, such as zebra and quagga mussels, threaten freshwater ecosystems and the fish that inhabit them, competing with native species for resources and contributing to harmful algal blooms. Invasive mussels further strain water and reservoir infrastructure, clogging pipelines, impairing canals and constraining hydropower production.

Keith Combs Talks Tackle and Tactics for Fall Crankbait Success
