Keeping Our Dog Safe with Ranger Ready Repellents

Our hunting dog is an important part of our family. We want to make sure that they are safe, just like we would want any family member taken care of. This is especially true when out in the field on a hunt. We want to make sure our dog is just as protected in the outdoors as we are from ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes and other biting insects.

It is important to know when tick, mosquito and chigger season is in effect where you live or where you are hunting. It is also important to understand the landscape where you are hunting.  Dry, arid land does not hold mosquitoes, but river bottoms are filled with them. Ticks like shrubs and grasses which allow them to leap onto passing animals easily.  Ticks are the superman of the bug species because they can jump over 400 times their height. If humans were that strong, they could easily jump over the Empire State Building.

Of course, as a dog owner you should check your dog each day you are out. Make sure to check their ears, the folds of their skin, armpits, feet and any soft spots to make sure they are tick and bite free.

In 2019, we discovered Ranger Ready Repellents, right around the same time we got a puppy.  On our very first trip out to hunt she came back and jumped into the car, and she was covered in ticks. We got the ticks off her once we got home, but later jumped in the truck to run an errand and saw five more ticks where she had been in the truck. We asked ourselves that if Permethrin works by killing ticks on our hunting gear and clothing, couldn’t we spray Permethrin on the cloth seats and carpets of the truck to protect ourselves and dog from any biting insects that get brought in?

Since then we’ve been regularly using the Ranger Ready’s Scent Zero P2Pak, which features their Scent Zero body-worn Picaridin and clothing-worn Permethrin repellents. Before any hunt we spray any exposed skin with their Picaridin 20% repellent, for 12 hours of protection from ticks and mosquitoes. Monthly we treat our hunting gear, clothing, cloth car seats,

House Passes Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Research and Management Act, Innovative Bill Led by CSC Members to Combat CWD

Minutes ago, the U.S. House of Representatives delivered a significant victory for America’s sportsmen and women with the successful passage of H.R. 5608, the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act – one of the top wildlife conservation priorities for the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF). The passage of H.R. 5608 under suspension, less than two months after the bill was introduced, demonstrates the significant level of strong bipartisan support for this critical legislation.

For years, CSF has been working to develop a coordinated and comprehensive piece of legislation to combat Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) with leading representatives from hunting conservation groups, wildlife science professionals, and vested stakeholders. After numerous strategy discussions, these efforts lead to a coordinated approach with the offices of Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) Members Reps. Kind and Thompson who are championing H.R. 5608.

Specifically, the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act will help address CWD by authorizing $70 million annually from Fiscal Year 2022 to Fiscal Year 2028 to be split evenly between CWD research and management efforts. Of this, $35 million will be dedicated annually for CWD research to develop testing methods, enhance detection efforts, better understand genetic resistance, among others. The remaining $35 million will be used for the management of CWD by prioritizing funding for state and tribal wildlife agencies that have the highest incidence of CWD, are demonstrating the most significant commitments to combatting CWD, are facing the greatest risk of new CWD cases, and more.

CWD represents one of the most pressing challenges facing wildlife managers, largely due to the general lack of information related to the disease. For example, even though research suggests that CWD is transmitted directly from one animal to another through bodily fluids and issues, the exact transmission pathways remain unclear. Furthermore, the progression of the disease is extremely slow and may not result in animals becoming symptomatic for several years after infection occurs.

“CSF applauds the House for moving quickly to pass the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act – a thoughtful, bipartisan, and meaningful piece of legislation to combat one of the most pressing wildlife conservation challenges, CWD,” said CSF President and CEO Jeff Crane. “Thanks to the leadership of Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus Members Reps. Kind and Thompson, the House passage of this bill marks the most significant progress a comprehensive piece of legislation to address this issue has made, and we encourage the Senate to quickly follow suit.”

Snap or No Snap?

Many anglers like the efficiency of using a snap to affix their chosen lure to their fishing line. It makes swaps quick and easy and can even enhance the lure’s action by allowing it to affect a wider gait. Others, however, shudder at the idea of even the smallest piece of additional hardware. They want their lures to be natural and free-flowing.

Who’s right?

Well, they both are.

It’s all about efficiency, performance and confidence. When choosing whether to use a snap, try to figure out how you can best achieve a combination of those three factors, and you’re well on your way to maximizing your fish-catching success.

Fortunately, for anglers who prefer or otherwise need a snap, SPRO offers a complete selection of tools that won’t break the bank, inhibit your lures or fail unnecessarily. They start with the easy-to-operate Duo Locks in sizes from 0 to 06, rated up to an impressive 240 lbs. of strength. Whether you’re fishing in freshwater or saltwater, using a jig, a crankbait or a topwater, this tool will allow rocket-fast bait swaps while allowing you to remain confident in the integrity of your offerings.

Growing Conservation Partnership Adds Veteran’s Hunt to Mission Success

The NWTF is proud to be working on various conservation projects with the Michigan Army National Guard on the 147,000-acre Camp Grayling Military Base. Conservation projects range from tree plantings to creating wildlife openings that benefit both wildlife and US Military operations. However, the NWTF Beaver Creek Chapter and Michigan State Chapter are proud to add a disabled veteran’s hunt to all the great conservation work the NWTF is accomplishing with Camp Grayling and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on the US’s largest National Guard base.

The inaugural disabled veterans hunt was led by NWTF’s Beaver Creek Chapter volunteers, NWTF R3 Coordinator Steve Sharp,  NWTF District Biologist Ryan Boyer and Camp Grayling and MDNR staff. Like most NWTF mentored deer hunts, the event began with a thorough overview of how to hunt white-tailed deer, including where to place an ethical shot, safety protocol, how to track a deer and more.

“This event was much more than a mentored hunt,” Boyer said. “It was an outlet for these veterans to share their experiences in the military and join in camaraderie through the outdoors. This was an enriching experience for mentors and mentees alike.”

After the learning seminar, the veterans went hunting that evening and the following morning, harvesting multiple does and bucks.

“One veteran shot two deer and donated one of his to another veteran that wasn’t able to harvest one,” Boyer said. “The fellowship was resonant with this group. Our local chapter volunteers helped provide the meals, cooking a great dinner for everyone on the first night, and they ordered pizza the second, spending time and sharing stories over great meals long after both hunts had ended.”

Gamakatsu’s Newest Case is Built for Utility

Gamakatsu® has developed a new case that allows anglers to carry large bulky items that are difficult to store. The new G-Box 3700D2 Deep Utility Case delivers more storage in a familiar footprint, adding utility to their existing tackle storage systems.

The G-Box 3700D2 Deep Utility Case features an open box layout with no dividers so anglers can easily stash bulky items like pliers, de-hooking tools, or bulk soft plastics. The hard shell keeps items protected, while the single-hand, easy-open lid clasp allows for easy access. In addition, the lid’s tight tolerances ensure even small items can’t work their way out when the boat encounters some chop or the road turns rough.

The standard 14 x 9 x 3.2-inch size of the G-Box 3700D2 means it will stash easily in existing systems so anglers can expand the usefulness of tackle bags or their boat’s storage cubbies. Use the 3700D2 to organize that heap of soft plastics, or get all of those rigging tools in one place to make them easier to find.

They can go from the garage to the boat with ease, so anglers never have to leave a valuable item behind.

Pick up Gamakatsu’s new G-Box 3700D2 Deep Utility Case and organize items that are challenging to store all in one place, with the protection and utility of a standard-sized tackle box.

On the Hunt: 5 Technologies Changing the Hunting Game

Today’s hunter has much better odds than those who hunted mammoths, and the prey is much easier to carry, too. It’s not just skills that have improved, however. The modern hunter has more tools and technologies available to them than ever before.

You can elevate your hunting game with these revolutionary technologies, from smart maps to scent-controlled apparel. Tech tools and methods make hunting easier and more fun than you could imagine. Add one, two, or even all of these upgrades to your hunting gear and come back from your next hunting trip more successful than ever before.

EMF-blocking apparel

EMF-blocking apparel is an excellent way to mask the natural electromagnetic waves that your body emits when you move or contract muscles. Animals use these invisible energy cues to alert them of predators and hunters in the area, so being able to block these emissions will give you a better shot at maintaining the element of surprise. To learn more about this and other technologies, visit providers like HECS® Hunting.

Smart maps

Smart maps are an incredible way to take advantage of all the advancements of GPS technology. Now, you can find apps that provide smart maps of hunting areas. Some even include overlays on top of satellite images so you can understand the area you’re hunting in from a wider perspective while you trek through tree coverage.

Thermal vision

Thermal imaging technology was once limited to government and military use, but it is becoming more available to civilians and gaining popularity among hunters. Products like a pocket-sized thermal binocular can help hunters like you see in total darkness or despite poor weather conditions.

Brownells Joins Firearms Policy Coalition Constitution Alliance

Brownells is proud to announce it has become a Benefactor Member of the Firearms Policy Coalition Constitution Alliance.

Brownells joins other well-known firearms industry companies such as Daniel Defense and Silencer Shop to stand with the Firearms Policy Coalition in defense and support of constitutionally-guaranteed Second Amendment rights for all Americans.

Founded in 2015, the FPC’s main mission is to protect and defend constitutional rights—especially the right to keep and bear arms— often by filing lawsuits against egregious anti-gun-rights laws and regulations.

Recently, FPC filed a lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional New Jersey restrictions and local practices that prevent its residents from exercising their right to carry loaded handguns in public for self-defense. Additionally, FPC has recently filed lawsuits in Nevada, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Illinois, and Tennessee.

“FPC has stood in the Breach to defend our 2A rights for years. They have stacked up an impressive list of legal wins that keeps the individual right to bear arms alive in America,” said Brownells Chairman Pete Brownell.  “Now is the time to double down in supporting our Second Amendment Rights by supporting FPC.”

Boone and Crockett Club, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation Establish Formal Partnership to Further Conservation Priorities

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF), the leading advocate for sportsmen and women in the political arena, and the Boone and Crockett Club (B&C), America’s pioneers of conservation, announced a formal partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Boone and Crockett Club’s 134th Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Defining and establishing a recognized partnership between CSF and B&C – at the state, regional and national levels – will benefit each organization by leveraging the unique expertise and resources of the other through collaboration.

Both CSF and B&C are positioned to advance conservation goals that benefit America’s sportsmen and women. The establishment of a coordinated working relationship provides an opportunity to combine the power of CSF’s sportsmen’s caucus infrastructure and expertise with B&C’s influential network of conservation professionals and regular members across the country.

Through the partnership, CSF will work closely with B&C to identify and track legislation that affects the conservation of our nation’s natural resources. Working together, both organizations will leverage their reach, resources, and expertise to facilitate a strategic path forward on federal, state, and regional policy issues to advance shared goals.

The adoption of the B&C-CSF MOU represents the evolution of a decades-long working relationship between the two organizations that has produced numerous wins for sportsmen and women. Most recently, the two organizations worked successfully in advancing a number of legislative wins including the enactment of the Great American Outdoors Act, establishment of a HuntFish30x30 coalition, passage of an anti-poaching bill in Oregon and the enactment of HB 647 which restructures the costs of Montana non-resident hunting licenses.

“CSF and the Boone and Crockett Club are no strangers to one another having been in the trenches, working together for many years, as we both recognize the immense contributions of America’s hunters and anglers to conservation,” said CSF president and CEO Jeff Crane. “We are excited to establish a formal partnership to foster and further conservation interests of this nation’s great outdoor traditions.”
