The simple pleasure of casting into the water and connecting with a fish attracts millions of anglers to the thrill of the sport. It’s easy to take the sport and hobby we love for granted until a traumatic injury takes that opportunity away.

Such is the case with many wounded warriors and first responders harmed in the line of duty. Spinal cord or head injuries can leave them with limited or no use of their hands, arms, and legs.

Before their injuries, these wounded heroes may or may not have been avid anglers; however, veteran assistance groups, such as River Deep Foundation, recognize the restorative power of being outdoors and having a renewed empowerment to cast and retrieve a lure to catch a fish.

Through a collaborative effort with their non-profit alliance member organizations, River Deep Foundation works with vets with debilitating spinal cord and other traumatic injuries to offer outdoor family events, such as fishing, to assist in re-engaging in sport and adventure.

This is where Colorado University Graduate Engineering student, Connor Borshard, and the team of six other fellow engineering graduate students stepped in to help. A non-profit group called Quality of Life Plus issued a call for university STEM programs to create innovative technology solutions that improve the quality of life for injured veterans and first responders. Borshard’s team was drawn to a project aiding in the casting, catching, and reeling of fish for individuals who have little to no dexterity in their hands or upper limbs. Borshard and his team proposed and engineered a brilliant solution they’ve dubbed, the Adaptive Fishing Device.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Mojave National Preserve Boundary Adjustment Act (S. 4132), new legislation introduced today in the U.S. Senate by Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), would once again allow hunting on lands managed by the National Park Service (NPS) currently within the Castle Mountains National Monument.  

“In our steadfast commitment to public access and firm belief that hunters serve as critical partners in wildlife and habitat conservation efforts, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has long sought to restore hunting activities on the lands within the Castle Mountains National Monument in southern California,” said Patrick Berry, BHA president and CEO. “We extend our appreciation to Sen. Padilla for his leadership introducing the Mojave National Preserve Boundary Adjustment Act, which would transfer the more than 20,000 acres of this national monument to the adjacent Mojave National Preserve and thereby restore public hunting access while maintaining the conservation of habitat for species such as desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and quail.”  

Hunting is prohibited on public lands managed by the NPS except when authorized by Congress. When the Castle Mountains National Monument was designated, those lands previously managed by the Bureau of Land Management were transferred to the jurisdiction of the NPS and hunting opportunity was incidentally lost. This legislation would continue NPS management of these lands, but incorporate them into the adjacent Mojave National Preserve, where Congress explicitly authorized hunting with its establishment under the California Desert Protection Act of 1994. Historic efforts have sought to include these lands within the Mojave National Preserve and this legislation would achieve that intent. Doing so would also improve management by consolidating contiguous units of public land that are managed under the same authority.

“The California Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has long been committed to the iconic, austere landscape of the Mojave Desert through habitat stewardship projects and the annual youth quail hunt,” said Eric Hanson, chair of the California Chapter of BHA. “Despite the loss of hunting access to the Castle Mountains, the chapter has continued to work with the National Park Service and partner organizations to restore critical habitat infrastructure for desert bighorn sheep within the national monument. We thank Sen. Padilla for his leadership on the Mojave National Preserve Boundary Adjustment Act and we look forward to restoring our access and connection to this cherished area.”

President Trump first addressed the NRA in Nashville in 2015. Since then, he has been a steadfast advocate for the NRA, the Second Amendment, and self-defense rights—including his promise in 2016 to never let NRA members down.

As President, Trump made good on that promise by appointing a record-setting number of judges who respect the Second Amendment, including three Supreme Court justices who played a pivotal role in landmark Second Amendment rulings such as NRA-funded NYSRPA v. Bruen, cementing his legacy as a gun rights champion.

Legislation contains key measures to conserve critical waterfowl habitat and to provide public access to hunting grounds

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — The legislative process toward delivering a new U.S. Farm Bill has taken important first steps this week.

Delta Waterfowl appreciates the work of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, chair of the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee and Rep. Glenn “G.T.” Thompson, R-Pennsylvania, chair of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture, to advance their respective initial overviews of the Farm Bill.

“This step is important progress to ensure America’s producers have the safety net needed while also investing in the voluntary, incentive-based conservation programs that are so crucial for the future of ducks and duck hunters,” said John Devney, chief policy officer for Delta Waterfowl.

In addition to being the central policy supporting agricultural production, the Farm Bill includes important habitat conservation measures such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and Conservation Reserve Program. Both EQIP and CRP conserve critical breeding duck habitat for mallards, pintails, teal, and many other species of waterfowl.

Check The Serial Numbers

One of the most important things you will need to do is check the serial numbers all match up. The receiver, the bolt, and the bolt carrier should all have the same serial number if it is a new rifle. If one of the serial numbers is different because if they do not, there is a high chance that one of the pieces has been assembled from used parts.

Safety Operation And The Trigger

You need to check that the trigger and the safety operations of the AK-47 work correctly. Your rifle needs to have a trigger that breaks cleanly when it is disengaging from the sear and returns to the forward position after being released. If it doesn’t, the trigger spring is broken.

Before making a purchase, you should also check if the safety works. Ensure that when the safety is on, it stops the trigger from being pulled; otherwise, it’s extremely dangerous.

Tolerance Of The Magazine Well

The magazine needs to be able to fit comfortably in the magazine well. The magazine well’s tolerance should be high enough to allow for magazines to be easily inserted and removed without having to use a large amount of force to do so. There tends to be a massive variation in magazine well tolerance depending on where the rifle was manufactured, so it’s important to check this when you are making a purchase, or else you could find yourself struggling to get the magazine in and out of the rifle.

Cheng has issued a challenge to the gun community to raise $100K for Walk the Talk America from May 1 – 8, 2024 in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.

In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Walk The Talk America (WTTA), a non-profit organization bridging the gap between mental health and responsible firearm ownership, proudly announces a special fundraiser by Top Shot Season 4 Champion Chris Cheng to raise $100,000. The challenge lasts from May 1 – 8, 2024. Cheng is kicking things off by personally donating $5,000, which will be used to match smaller donations of $500 or less. “Many of us gun owners believe that a key approach to reducing gun violence in our country is to focus on mental health.
